1-0 out of 5 stars not enough info to be usefull
the book does not contain enough information to be usefull. I would recommend other books such as "building Embedded Linux Systems"

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, Odd Story format
This book is clearly the best reference I have for embedded projects under linux; future and present inclusive. The author covers USB device integration quite well, and gives a well worded approach to mounting and setting up your own usb-devfs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Out of Date but still well worth the purchase
As of 4/2004,the book relies on a free distribution of Hard Hat linux that is no longer available on Montavista's site (as they charge $25K for a single seat, I guess they felt they were giving too much away ;-) HOWEVER:Hollanaugh has copies of them with all of his scripts on his site, so look for them there. His scripts are also now modified to point to the new locations.Though even this distribution is somewhat out of date, this book does a pretty reasonable job of getting you through it all.I found finding free (useful, current) distributions of embedded linux very hard to find but eventually did.. Check out www.denx.de and store.yahoo.com/snapgear/snemlidi.html for current multiplatform distributions. The denx distribution ELDK appears to have morphed from the original Hard Hat distibution as many of the utilities still exist, I used this and was able to "generally" follow along. It's a more recent distribution and supports more platforms (at least for the PPC).I would definately repurchase this book again..Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars You'll learn a lot about RMS, but at the same time be tired by the simple level.
FREE AS IN FREEDOM is Sam Williams' biography of legendary software developer and political thinker Richard Stallman. Founder of the GNU project, Stallman is little-known outside of a relatively small world of computing cognoscenti, but without him Linux and many other modern computing innovations would hardly be possible. In an interesting twist, the publisher O'Reilly has released this book under the GNU Free Documentation License, meaning that the book may be freely copied and sold.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I find Stallman and Linus a very interesting comparison, especially their motivations. Williams has done a good job of providing the reader insight into a leading thinker in our time. As with most leaders there are those who think he is a genius, those who think he is a fool and those who think he is evil. The choice is of course dependent upon how closely the leader agrees with the observer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the title, this is a wonderful book
Don't judge this book by its title. If you know how to program, but are a servant of the Microsoft Lord (we don't speak his name), this book is the pathway to learn Linux programming. It is very well written. If one has the discipline to work through the numerous examples, they will become proficient at Linux programming, e.g., fork new processes, implement pthreads, understand common system calls, and perhaps best of all benefit from the experience of the these Linux programmers. It is a fine book at the intermediate level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to learn debugging Linux from
The previous commentator is misleading. Although the book doesn't really give very elaborate examples, it's at least good enough to introduce the reader to the subjects and tools as a starting point to dig around himself. The materials are certainly not all for beginners.
1-0 out of 5 stars only for Linux beginner
If you knows Linux system well enough, don't buy this book. This is only for Linux beginner and doesn't have enough detail to go deep enough inside Linux. You may better off just looking at internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn how to debug Linux code at both kernel and application levels
Learn how to debug Linux code at both kernel and application levels through a hands-on tutorial which covers all kinds of performance optimization issues. From cache misses and memory management issues to network performance and dump analysis from crashes, Linux Debugging And Performance Tuning Tips And Techniques is packed with real-world examples, with screen shots and code lists helping explain debugging logic and procedures. Highly recommended for any Linux systems administrator involved in debugging processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Do you want to master the entertainment possibilities of Linux? If you do, then this book is for you! Author Kyle Rankin, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that takes the best of Linux's multimedia tools and shows you step by step how to use these tools to do cool things you would not have thought possible with images, audio, and video.
5-0 out of 5 stars Into multimedia?Into Linux? This is the book you need.
Most versions of Linux have minimal multimedia abilities without the installation of additional software.Of course there is a lot of Linux software out there that can be used to change your Linux installation into a powerful multimedia computer with amazing capabilities. And, since it is Linux, it can be done at minimal or no cost for the software.Author Kyle Rankin details how to install and configure these products in this book.To keep the information organized he breaks it up into chapters on Images, Audio, Video, Broadcast Media, and Web.Working through the hacks you soon discover everything from how to rip a CD, convert file types, and edit a sound file to how to build a MythTV system where you can record television, watch videos, listen to music, and play arcade games from one system. There's even a tip for automatically removing commercials from digitally recorded television shows. When you are trying to figure out how to get your Linux system to do something special in the area of multimedia this is the first book you will want to turn to for answers.Linux Multimedia Hacks is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both newcomers and advanced users of Linux learn how to edit images, audio and video, manage music, burn DVDs and VCDs, and more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the Forgotten World of Assembly for Beginners
Last semester, I checked this book out from our school library and absolutely fell in love with it - it's superb. The author Duntemann has a clear, fresh, and very light writing style that's not loaded down with an overabundance of superfluous "geek-speak". Before delving into new concepts, Duntemann tries to get the reader to grasp, in a real world sense, how the concepts apply to the machine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best Assembly Book
The author starts this book out very strangly, but once you get into it you find that his craziness is well deserved.Programming is very difficult, but learning the basics is even harder. It starts out helping a person understand the numbering system of computers and then moves on into the meat of Assembly Language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meets its goal
The book's goal "a detailed view of the Linux VM as implemented in 2.4.22" -- as I think the specification of the version to that level of detail indicates, it is not a theoretical exercise.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jury's still out
The jury's still out on this book. There may be all kinds of wonderful info in the text, but if I can't get some of the distros that come on the accompanying CD and DVD to install and run, which was one reason for buying the book, I just can't get all excited about recommending it to others.Sort of like buying computer hardware from eCost.com and then getting screwed out of the rebate by their convoluted rebate process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic!!!
I have just entered the world of linux and bought this book as it seemed the best available in the market at the moment andi was proved right! The book also includes 12 different linux distributions but I suggest you install the Fedora Core 4 as the book is based on this distribution. Anyone new to linux must have this book as it starts from the very begining of linux and it gets tougher as the book proceeds.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entering the world of Linux
This book is a quick way to get your hands on a dozen different Linux distributions. Some you can boot up directly (KNOPPIX and Damn Small Linux) from the CD and DVD that come with the book. Others you can install (Fedora, Debian, and others) from the same media.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Business of Linux and Open Source
Users love software that they don't have to pay for. But, some software professionals have to make a living creating and maintaining that software. Many companies today grapple with the question, "how to make money with Linux and Open Source?"Some software business leaders are worried about whether Linux and Open Source are impacting business viability of operating systems/environment business.Enterprise business and IT managers are quite happy to see the trend towards software they don't have to pay for. But, most often they do not understand what the implications are and what the fine prints way.Martin Fink has done an excellent job of compiling all the fundamental and essential information on the business aspects of Linux and Open Source software. He clarifies and removes many myths people carry in their minds.Probably this is a "one of its kind" book that brings together the various angles such as the overview of terms, understanding legal lingo, business model aspects, talent management aspects and so on.The book covers the essential technical aspects lucidly and adequately. If you are looking for a deep technical source for Linux and Open Source architectures, there are enough pointers in the book; but, this book is not meant for that purpose.I recommend this book for software engineers who have to understand the business aspects and Enterprise IT/Business Managers who are deploying/planning Linux and Open Source components in their business. The timing of the book is perfect. This book is a good candidate for bringing out update versions as the domain expands and matures.I don't know whether Martin Fink plans to upgrade the book year after year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for Enterprise customers looking at Linux/Open source
I have just finished reading the book "The Business and Economics of Linux and Open Source" and wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed it.I am currently passing the book up my chain of command at work...5-0 out of 5 stars A must read if you consider open source in your business

5-0 out of 5 stars Notes on "Linux Troubleshooting Bible"
"Linux Troubleshooting Bible" is another excellent book by Christopher Negus.Although the focus is on the Fedora Core 3, it is still packed with information for the beginner as well as the experienced linux user. The book contains tons of information with excellent examples of commands, just about everything you need to know when using linux. The companion CD's include a DVD with Fedora Core 3 and CD-ROM containing the Debian 3.1 (sarge) release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
Linux iptables Pocket Reference is a great book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, handy reference for working SysAdmins
'Linux iptables Pocket Reference' is an important and sorely needed reference to iptables, the interface to the Linux packetfilter used by System Admins to create firewalls, NAT routers, transparent proxies, and other 'magical' network devices. While not a tutorial, it offers good advice for those with a grasp of basic networking concepts, and a good notion of what a firewall is and what it is used for, in a dense and concise format.Sufficiently detailed information about the protocols involved obviate the need to keep additional references at hand, and make the work relatively self-contained.This should not be the first book you read about firewalls or tcp/ip, but if you are a networking professional, a technically oriented user, or just interested in creating special purpose network devices, this book belongs in your library. Those familiar with iptables will especially appreciate the lucid description of packet flow through the tables and chains, and the supporting diagrams ... they alone are worth the price of purchase.
4-0 out of 5 stars for sysadmins
This book is written for linux/unix sysadmins, not programmers. The topic of iptables is intimately related to guarding a network against intruders. A sysadmin task. Plus, the compact, pocketbook size lends itself to a common scenario.

Editorial Review

Given that computers are a creation/projection of the human spirit, itis no surprise that they work against each other more often than not. Clientscompete for the attention of servers, networks drain each other's bandwidth, andfirewalls repel packet storms. But, just as system design mirrors our own greed,so too can it capture our Utopian dream that the whole is greater than the sumof the parts. Enter clusters, computer networks whose interconnectivity andcommunication protocols are interwoven so closely that the network can be usedto solve single problems.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds

This book describes a good overview of what a cluster is and how it operates, but the installation instructions were horrible, directories on CDROM were different than stated in the text, files were located in the wrong directories, kernel had to be modified to use network card, etc. Didn't anyone try to build a cluster using this text before it went to print?I'll keep looking for another book on clustering.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing learning experience
Most of the O'Reilly books I have looked at don't read as well as this one does. I am at working building a super computer now. While the author is involved in stock market work I don't find him condesending or snobby or like he doesn't have time for me. He tells the straight story of how to build a super computer with all the practical details you could want. I read it from the school library first and thought I wouldn't buy it myself but I have and now am really enjoying reading it. I am learning all kinds of things in the process. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It solved my problems about SuSE
Yes, it was usefull, its becoming dirty 'couse i use it frequently. Sometimes id like to have more info about commands in commandline, but in general it gives you more than what you could expect from.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Depth
Initially, I was pleased with this book--it is helpful in getting started. But, now the issue for me is that it lacks some key topics, like how to kill a process. Searching the index turns up nothing for the following terms: kill, restart, named. There is nothing about day-to-day admin types of functions needed for process managment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices
It is surprising to find that a book on SUSE Linux 9 with 665 pages of small print (TOO small) contains so little useful information for someone like me--a Windows user wanting to migrate to SUSE Linux for home use. Most of the book covers topics too advanced for Linux beginners. For example, there are ten chapters on implementing network services, another four chapters on "SUSE Linux in the Enterprise", and six more on using the command line.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid book, about much more than just UML
I've read several of the books in Bruce Peren's Open Source Series, and this is by far the best.I read it cover-to-cover and enjoyed the author's relaxed and informative writing style.
4-0 out of 5 stars awkward title
Dike invented the User Mode Linux, as well as being the author of this book. The latter is hence quite authoritative. It has several useful reasons for runnng "UML". Like being able to set up and test a network of such virtual machines, and to do this in an automated fashion. Whereas if you have a network of real machines, changing network configurations inevitably involves a lot of manual work.
4-0 out of 5 stars Learn User Mode Linux from its developer
UML is a great tool for all sorts of applications and projects, but the biggest attraction for me is the opportunity to learn more about the Linux kernel itself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stiff
I agree with David DelGreco. My review is mixed because a lot is covered and well explained, but the information is dispersed all over the place and sometimes plain wrong. It would be good to see sections for the *mouse way*, *visual way* and *Vi-ish way* from the start.
5-0 out of 5 stars So good I bought it twice
I loaned my original copy of this book to a co-worker who later quit, and took the book with him.I missed the book so much, I went and ordered another copy. And this was at a time in my life when I was actually clearing my book shelves of old books in an effort to simplify my life. This book is that good.Vim is arguably one of the best text editors in existence, and if you want to learn Vim I can't think of any better book than this one.Even if you're just a casual user who is going to edit a few config files on a Unix/Linx machine, this is the book for you; the first three chapters will have you well on your way to using Vim efficiently. If you're a programmer or advanced user, you'll also benefit from the later chapters. Some say that Vim's learning curve is too steep, and prefer to use simpler editors like Pico or Joe (or even Notepad, on Windows), but this book will take away your fear and will make learning Vim easy.Even if you just read the first few chapters, it's worth it.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Little detail, bad organization, Poor as a reference
If you've never used Vi before, this book will help you to get started. But after the first week, it won't be very useful.
