Editorial Review

A virtual private network (VPN) enables computers to access remote resources--like the mail store on another office's mail server--from a geographically remote location. Rather than access the files over a private (and expensive) wide area network (WAN) link, however, a VPN makes its data transmissions across the open Internet. The magic is in making the communications secure, a critical job that requires a tunneling protocol that implements encryption. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome VPN book
If you need to know, really need to know VPN internals and how to make them work, Oleg Kolesnikov has written a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best technical Book I've read
This is one of the most excellent books i have ever read, on many levels. It its: first, the best technical book i have ever read, second, the best VPN book i have ever read and third, the best gnu/linux book i have ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Step by step instructions that WORK!
Building Linux VPNs is the first book I've bought in the last three years that has the right balance between theory and practice. The first two chapters let you know everything you need to know about VPNs and network topologies and 'gotcha's (where should the DNS server go?How should I route?) 5-0 out of 5 stars Pensacola LUG review book
The Linux Security Cookbook is a good hands-on guide to the major aspects of securing your Linux box. This book offers many quick reference guides to pieces of software for securing or testing your system and goes through many different means of fortifying your box including:5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource on Linux security
At fewer than 300 pages, the initial size of the Linux Security Cookbook may seem to be meager to cover such a broad subject. But what the book lacks in size, it makes up in content.5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for quick reference...
I read this book from cover to cover and consider it a great effort by the authors to cover many security issues related to not just Linux, but most *nix operating systems. Here's a chapter by chapter review of what I've observed in the book:Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Expert Knowledge On Hacking Techniques
John Chirillo has made a career of hacking. As a hacking consultant to Fortune 1000 companies part of his job is to break in to corporate networks to expose their holes and help his clients secure their networks. In Hack Attacks Revealed, he shares his knowledge of how hackers gain the information necessary to break into your systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reluctant law abider
I was relieved to read that this isn't considered a very useful reference on How to Hack.Certainly Ch. seems at his most enthusiastic, frothiest, even foamiest, in talking about the wonderful world of hacking.Yeah, he repeatedly trots out the line about having to know how to attack to know how to defend, time after time, but ya' gotta' wonder where his heart lies (Okay, even Milton had this problem.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for all users
There are way too many computer book authors who simply do not know how to write. Bill McCarty is not one of these. He has written an erxcellet book that eplains debian on a very basic level. This is a good book because it delivers exactly what it promises to deliver. It is an introduction to linux and it encourages new users to "have fun" and "be patient." It is outdated, though. For Linux, a good book needs to be more recent that 2000 to be relevant. This book is older than that. The effective birthday of Debian was in 1993. Highly recommended book!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good first book
For an absolute beginner this is ok. However too much reliance is given to the How-to's and internet for problem solving, a PS2 mouse works with /dev/psaux which wasn't easy to find out. The installation guide is pretty good, you will appreciate it the first time you install linux, but if you enjoy playing and try different distro's you won't need it very quickly. The introduction to sysadmin is equally useful at a basic level for a home machine. So if you haven't tried linux this is as good a start as any I have read, but you only need one beginner's book, then i believe the Rute Manual which has now been printed is the way to go.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's ok, but could have been better...
While it's nice to have a book cover the Debian specific installation procedure, too much space was wasted on repeating instructions like "with the arrow key, highlight 'Ok' and hit the Enter key".Too much space in this book is taken up with these trivial instructions, over and over again, it becomes tedius to read.If we didn't have to read about hitting the arrow and Enter keys with every little step, this book otherwise has some useful Debian specific information in it.Too bad the book couldn't have been packed with more useful info and fewer instructions on how to highlight a menu item. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Get ready for a slog
I couldn't get more than a dozen pages into this book. The writing is dense and entirely colorless, as if the author wants to punish you for daring to read it.There are serious misstatements about licensing and other subjects.I wouldn't recommend this book to someone unless I *wanted* them to fail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair Introduction to the Linux Network Codde
I found this book to be a useful introduction to the Linux TCP/IP stack but the book could be better.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but needs to be updated to cover the 2.6 kernel
I did not give this book a 5-star rating only because it does not cover the latest 2.6 kernel. There are quite a few changes in the networking subsystem, nevertheless, there are lot of useful information in this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars poor translation from German, but great code walkthrough
This book is marred by pretty bad translation from the original German edition. It takes a while to figure out that the translator is more an English major struggling with intricate computer science terminologies than a fellow programmer. For example, device "base address" is translated to device "basic address" in chapter 5, multiple times; "re-compile the entire kernel" miraculously becomes "retranslate the entire kernel" in chapter 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great topics
After reading this book, I think it is going to be the mandatory companion I hand out to new Linux administrators, along with Essential System Administration. The first 6 chapters are exceptional.I can't say enough good things about them. The coverage of PAM is better than anything I have seen. The coverage of authentication, groups, users and best practices surrounding them was very good as well. The logging chapter alone is probably worth the purchase of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Couldn't ask for more.
I haven't run a Linux box since 2002. Some time ago, realizing that I'd soon have a chance to migrate to using Linux for everyday work, I decided I should start refreshing my *NIX commands and shell scripting. Then, I saw "Hardening Linux". Rather spontaneously, I decided to start with this security-focused title instead of the perhaps more intuitive path of installing the latest distro, setting up a bunch of daemons, installing databases, etc. That proved to be an excellent decision. "Hardening Linux" is not a small book. Yet, I read the 500 pages more or less cover to cover. Even though we're talking about a book of which purpose is to help you to secure your Linux server, I felt like I learned more about Linux reading this book than I've learned during the last year at work.
4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth explanations with step-by-step techniques for securing Linux and common applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf
The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf is an excellent valued reference tool for programmers wanting to develop software in an open source web environment. Not only does it contain the full text for six of O'Reilly's best sellers on open source web development, a search engine for each book, and a master index, but also it has a number of relevant articles that have posted to the O'Reilly Network. It has a easy to read web-browser interface.5-0 out of 5 stars Linux web server CD bookshelf
Just as the Web Programmers CD bookshelf that I had the opportunity to read, the searching abilities of the cd bookshelves are excellent. Being able to search a certain topic across 6 books at once makes searching for quick answers easily accomplished. Being able to buy 6 books on a single cd also helps to save money while at the same time helps to build your own library of in depth books. The combination of books included in the Linux web server cd bookshelf has enough detailed information to help teach you the ins and outs of running an Apache web server on a Linux platform. Also the Programming PHP and the Managing & Using MySQL books should help you make full use of your Linux web server and understand the flexibility of what can be done.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good but soon to be outdated
Everything you need to know about v.1.3, but with Apache 2.0 just around the corner (currently in beta), you might want to hold off until the 2nd edition. This edition touches very briefly on 2.0, providing a general overview of what to expect, but no meat.A lot remains the same, but some critical things are different, and clear documentation of the kind that this book provides for 1.3 is scant.Hopefully something will come out before too long fill the void.3-0 out of 5 stars Good but should have been better
There is a lot of good information contained in this book just waiting to get out.Unfortunately, the poor chapter organisation and the abyssmal index makes finding the information you need (or trying to find it later) a frustrating experience. There's also a lot of padding with CGI and PHP scripts that didn't seem to serve any purpose unless you really wanted to learn how to program 'hello world'. Overall, it will teach you the gist of administrating an Apache Web Server, but I found it disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not For New System Admins
I actually got myself in quite a pickle at work introducing them to linux.Immediately they wanted it on our network starting with an email server.First of all, I am a programmer, not a system admin.Second, I use linux on a daily basis at work and home but not for servers.Desperately, I reached for this book for help.Bad idea at the beginning at least. The book's way of going through setting up postfix at the beginning was no help for me and my novice knowledge with servers.I ended up getting everything setup thanks to google and wikipedia howtos.Later I blew dust off this book and picked it up for another go.Now that I understand the basics I am at a comfort level with this book, but still have struggles here and there. This book, however, definitely helped me with setting up squirrelmail and spamassassin.Definitely recommend this book to somebody with a basic understanding of linux and some-what of an understanding of servers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like Linux
Linux is better than Windows.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best book I've read on Linux security
This book is well-written, thorough, and practical rather than academic. I particularly found the chapter on securing network services to be helpful, and was able to identify some potential security problems on the systems I support as a result of information provided in that chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value
This book is a very straightforward, clearly written and valuable introduction to Linux clustering. Geared toward system folks, it also provides numerous `on-ramps' into the basics of clustering to accommodate quick, relevant review of supporting technology for the reader. It is essentially a map for getting from start to finish in any Linux cluster project. Specific situations, conditions, and expectations differ across projects, of course, and such points are identified well in the text with pointers to additional information provided.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect companion book to Linux Enterprise Cluster (Karl Kopper)
The book describes in simple reproducable steps how to build a medium to medium big sized cluster. It also devides the clusters into the three main types,

* a little bit too chatty (e.g. on page 162 he starts lecturing you about the meaning of 'freedom' after using the book's and your minds real estate telling you on page 36 about disposing of packaging hardware, ... @@, ;-))

A good book for learning Linux. Not as basic as O'Reilly's Running Linux and not as deep as Unix Power Tools, but perfect for the "no longer a newbie, not yet a pro" crowd. Recommended.

I've noticed that there is a glut of ultra beginner linux books on the market... books that teach basic linux commands, explain what shells are, lead you through installations... this is not quite one of those books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Linux internals
I found the explanations in this book to be very clear, giving enough detail for a good head start into Linux internals. The book briefly explains the OS concepts, such as semaphores, virtual memory, etc., followed by an overview of how each is implemented in Linux, and code snippets. 3-0 out of 5 stars A liitle out-date, but still a good book for OS concepts
