5-0 out of 5 stars Best book available for DBAs working with DPF
I used this book to write Exam 704 (Advance DB2 UDB DBA certification). I cleared the exam with flying colors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best DB2 book!
I just found this book, and after reading it wish I had found this years ago. This is the most comprehensive book on DB2 that I have ever seen. This book has already saved me a lot of time. The performance chapter is great and helped me improve the performance of my DB2 server by over 30% in less than a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is the book I was waiting for long on DB2UDB. This not only covers topics for certifications but also good (very good) reference material for all UDB DBAs on LUW platform. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great
Most people reviewing this book either love it or hate it. I won't go to quite that extreme, but I do have to say that the book missed the mark in a number of areas.5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Class!
This books is different than anything else on the shelf.3-0 out of 5 stars Skip first three or four chapters
Skip the first three chapters, 37 pages, you'll miss nothing except some bad info about Windows 2000. If you can use Partition Magic to prepare your disk for installation and the nic was identified during setup, skip Chapter 4 and start at page 101.If you can make up your own mind on where to use Linux or NT (the author didn't understand 2000 Dir. Svcs. yet so he only compared Linux to NT), skip Chapter 10 and stop at page 471. That leaves 370 pages of Linux info. provided by the co-authors.Browsing through these chapters, X seems to be an important feature. That matches with my limited understanding.Lots of important topics are mentioned but none covered very deeply. The comparisons with Windows technology weren't that important or were just uninformed (DNS comparisons ignored services) and most features, RPM for instance, don't benefit from a Windows perspective. Too bad they wasted 200 pages on fluff. That's why it gets a three.Don't pay retail for this book, it is already dated material and should be heavily discounted. As an MCSE Network Admin on NT & 2000, I saw 2000 and Server 2003 leave NT in the dust along with Linux. Directory Services and group policies are vital to distribution and central management. Linux has only SNMP so far. Soon Linux will be ready for [self-installing on] client desktops which may be it's future.Directory-based services and integrated business software (Exchange, CRM) will run on proprietary server OS's from IBM, Windows, and maybe Oracle OS in the future. Clients will stream XML of secure managed code from these servers and back via open protocols. JIT compilers and local code libraries will assemble client executables that use remote web services and data. Admins: read about web services and Mono on Linux. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of breed
The Shinn brothers are legendary in information security, so when I saw this book, I made sure to put it on the top of my airline reading list.
4-0 out of 5 stars firewalls are not trivial to run
Linux firewalls are attractive to many companies because of their free nature. But free does not mean easy to understand or use. It is this need to which the book is addressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for newbies
I have been looking for a beginner's book for Linux for a long time. This is the third book on Linux I have purchased. I wish I had bought this one first. This book has everything for someone who is new to Linux. It gives detailed descriptions of the utilities, the shells, how to use different text editors as well as networking. It doesn't go over the installation process; you can get instructions for your version on the web. I found this book to be very helpful for someone like myself who is new to Linux. I would recommend this nook to anyone who is new to Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forthright, clear, concise, organized . . .
Perhaps it's Mark Sobell's writing style or perhaps it's the nature of Linux. I've found so much knowledge here--written so clearly, concisely, and in such an organized manner--that I had to stop learning and write this review.4-0 out of 5 stars A first Reference for Linux
Great work from Mark Sobell... this man is really good! . Im constantly returning to this book as a reference. It's more recommended for newbies , as it goes through all unix world (concepts, basic commands,shells,etc..) but after you get experienced youll use it as good reference for some doubts. the main commands are all there with all those -xxxxxx options indeed. I also agree with one of the reviews that said that it needs some new review as it was written is 1997, but it's still a very good value book. Every admin should have one in the shelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for even the beginning Linux System Administrator
Being a fairly new Linux System Administrator, I find Jamie Camerons book a huge help. Not only does it cover evey aspect of Webmin, but also covers the essentials of Linux System Administration and how Webmin can be used to make things easier. The book follows a good sequence and builds upon previous chapters. I'm actually looking at purchasing another copy as I already have this one full of tabs and nearly worn out!
5-0 out of 5 stars Book Teaches Linux, Not Just Webmin
Before buying this book, I used Webmin and thought it was pretty easy to use and didn't think I needed a book about it. Was I wrong.3-0 out of 5 stars A nice book with some flaws
Webmin is a pretty neat tool for administering a server using a GUI, particularly remotely. Managing Linux Systems with Webmin, written by Webmin's author Jamie Cameron, is an extensive look at using and extending it, a good guide not without flaws.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro - very newbie friendly
I received 3 Ubuntu titles and thought it might be useful to compare them. Ubuntu is a fairly recent Linux distribution that strives to be usable out of the box, with strong support. It has deep pockets and a thriving community behind it. I admire a lot of the design choices that went into Ubuntu, such as limiting the use of the all-powerful root account, which can get people into trouble. The bare-bones server install is the cleanest Linux server I've seen - *no* open ports, minimal services. Just enough to log in at a console and then install what you want. On the other hand, if you want a LAMP server (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP - the most popular combination on the internet), that's a one button install! Brilliant!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Book
When I first started with DB2, this book was recommended to me by someone who read the v7.2 book by the same authors. This was the most confusing techie book I have ever read.Amongst all the typos, my biggest gripe is the index. You may as well rip the index out of the book because it is useless. There hasn't been one time where I wanted to look something up, referring to the index, and found what I was looking for.Its like a 900 page book with a 7 page index... useless.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT a good book
So it claims that Chapter 1-8 covers the objectives for Exam 700. It should have said - and MORE, SO MUCH MORE. Which borders on garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lo que necesitas para certificarte/What you need to get certified
Realmente estoy muy complacido con este libro, el cual me ha servido para prepararme y poder certificarme, lo recomiendo ampliamente.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Examples for Samba 3
The name says it all. This book is an excellent guide for the latest version of Samba. From small networks to enterprise level integration, Terpstra walks the user through examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Examples thgat Work
Most books either provide untested examples for how to do this sort of thing, and so can only be taken as illustrative, and/or they cover a very narrow range of tasks.Terpstra has done neither: he's provided examples that actually work, that have been tested inoperational environments, and he has provided a broad range of examples, examples that are useable regardless of the network type in place.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing like specific examples to see how to do something
Using Linux in a Windows desktop environment requires the use of Samba for file and print sharing via the Windows explorer. But Samba has grown up as a full-fledged package for communicating between Linux and Windows over the last few years.Installing Samba as a Primary Domain Controller, implementing ldap for easy directory integration, or just installing it as a file and print server are all easy to do with the help of this book. The author takes a much easier to follow approach than most other writers on this subject.Instead of trying to go through each of the features and discuss them in detail he organizes the book by the type of installation and then walks you through a correct setup for that situation. For example some of the sections are: No-frills Samba Servers, Small Office Networking, Secure Office Networking, The 500-User Office, A Distributed 2000-User Network, Migrating NT4 Domain to Samba-3, and Migrating Netware Server to Samba-3.For each one of these situations the author dissects the technical issues, discusses each one, and then walks the reader through the implementing. The author also includes sections on things like performance, reliability, LDAP, and updating Samba.Nothing is left unexplained but each time you are told to check something or do something the exact syntax for doing it is given.Even with only very little or no Linux experience you can walk through this book and install a correctly functioning Samba server.Samba-3 by Example is highly recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Monopoly
The information is helpful and appears to be complete. The empirical knowledge implied by frequent contrasts between the specifications and what happens "on the wire" is impressive.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent technical reference
I really like this book. The internals of the CIFS protocol is not a subject for the faint hearted, but Chris has really tackled it well. This is just the right book for people like me who want to understand what is going on on their network at the bits and bytes level. 5-0 out of 5 stars In-depth discussion of CIFS implementation.
If want to know CIFS/SAMBA/NetBIOS internals, this is the book to read. It goes into detail of CIFS implementation. You will find discussion on structures, functions, and architecture of CIFS. This is a very good book for programmers who are working in this area. Although the book is useful for general users of CIFS but the real audience are the programmers and people who want to go into in-depth knowledge of CIFS implementation. You should know C programming to really benefit from this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific resource!
Although I'm very proficient on the Linux distros that I use every day, I always seem to have a new Linux system enter the environment that I'm unfamiliar with and must maintain or visit a site that uses a distro that my only interaction with was to patch on my last visit (...now how did I do that again?). Trying to remember all of the patching idiosyncrasies of each distro used to be a daunting task until I found this book. Linux Patch Management has been a Godsend. It is one of just a handful of books that I keep on my desk because I always seem to need it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Patching solutions for Fedora, Debian and other distributions, covering all kinds of tools and applications
Michael Jang's Linus Patch Management: Keeping Linux Systems Up To Date provides Linux users with complete patches for all kinds of environments: a feature Linux administrators will find essential. Here are patching solutions for Fedora, Debian and other distributions, covering all kinds of tools and applications. Whether you're updating networks and configuring clients or working with apt commands, if you're a Linux administrator, you must have this patch reference on hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars DEFRAG FIRST
Very good book. The installation didn't go well at first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very different from the usual cutesy Dummies book
I was pleasant suprised, then delighted, to find that this was NOT the usual, repellently cutesy Dummies book, but a very complete, straighforward guide to SuSE Linux 10. Additionally, it's an A+ book for those who may be thinking about Linux but have been frustrated by their attempts to learn the basics and/or install one of the popular distributions unaided. Barkakati respects the reader's intelligence, but he doesn't assume too much. He starts easy and doesn't leap suddenly onto a higher level of technical complexity, as many authors of computer books do. A common complaint among those who dip a toe into Linux is that it's a technical nightmare. Barkakati does an excellent job of introducing new users to the world of the command line. As operating systems and applications have evolved, we've lost the best features of the DOS command line and text-based programs such as WordStar -- namely, power and speed. Barkakati gives the reader a gentle introduction to that "closer to the computer" world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Fedora Core 3
The book is good. It is well written and easy to follow. Using this book I was able to reclaim a partition on my laptop. I then reformatted the partition and installed fedora core 3 on my laptop with the dvd that came with the book. Every thing is working fine except my wireless card which does not seem to have a driver. But I followed the instruction in the book on how to obtain the driver and get it worked but I have not done it yet. Overall, the information in the book was very helpful and I do recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fedora Linux 3 Bible scores
I like the book as well as most of his other Linux books. Its very detailed and does not assume you are a guru.At the same time he does not talk down to the reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money for getting you started
Kudos to Mr. Negus for another great book! I have his book on RH7.2 and thought that it was a great. When I decided to move to Fedora this was the book I thought would be best. Another great guide to the OS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Linux/Windows Integration Reference
This book did not favor any one Linux OS over another (good). Most Linux configuration was via commandline (which most will advocate in a Unix environment) and direct editing of conf files. Each chapter has a great balance of common practices, breaking down the common config parameters, then implementing.Overall, a great reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars NetBIOS? I say again NetBIOS?!?
Working several years as a certified Windows Administrator, I find it strange to have a complete chapter soley dedicated to the topic of NetBIOS.Who uses NetBIOS?I looked further into the book, and the all SAMBA material seems to be a rehash older and overdocumented SAMBA 2.0 docs...
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is a very good book on the topic. The author knows what he is talking about, he doesn't skip anything and explains almost everything that should be explained. Although there are some typos and small errors in the book, they are corrected in the errata. Accessible, thorough, well written, well organized, well supported. Definitely worth the money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner Book!!!
I bought this book mostly based on the reviews (...). I wanted a book that was broad, informative, and easy on the beginner and I got it. As a bonus it is also pretty entertaining, as Marcels' writing style is humorous and flavorful rather than the dry/info only style I see a lot in computer texts. It covers a lot of ground. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars, is I thought it was a little light on many topics. As you can see from browsing through right here, many topics only get a page or two. Onthe other hand, that also means it covers a great many topics and gives enough to provide a basic understanding that will aid you in knowing which direction to go when you are through. Well worth the $$$.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Understanding Linux 'behind the curtain'
I looked this book over very carefully at a local bookseller and it strikes me as one the best written books out of the many that exist, for helping linux users understanding the rather esoteric ways that linux works. It has practical hands-on quick explanations to learn the inner workings of linux that will help a linux user understand how to maintain, use, and solve problems with their linux machine. I plan on buying this book ASAP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch linux book for all!!
Marcel Gagne's Linux System Administration A User's Guide is by far the best book on linux I have read.I have gone through a number of different books regarding linux, but this one I find myself refering back to over and over again. There is something in here for seasoned linux administrators and linux newbies alike. If you are looking for a one stop shop linux book this is it!!In the past I would have to refer to a number of different books to find what I needed, but this book has it all.Easy to read and understand.Top notch job - highly recommended!Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A poorly organized reference book
This book simply can not be read cover to cover. If you are looking for a beginners guide to SUSE, don't get this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Did they get paid by the page?
I needed an in depth course on SuSE 10 and thought this would be it.Unfortunately, the authors wrote as if they got paid by the page. They would regularly rehash what they had discussed in the last section as if the "last section" wasn't still visible half-way up the page and they would constantly give instructions about neophyte computer skills such as how to pull off a ctrl-D or put a CD into a drive (shinny side down, apparently). But, when more information was definitely called for, such as when they list a shell command with half a dozen options, they would suddenly become quite sketchy.I didn't expect a complete command list for Linux that described every option, but if you rattle off a command with a sizable chunk of the alphabet as options, then maybe a brief description of what you're suggesting someone do on their computer is in order.Another annoyance is the authors' insatiable desire to give everyone a few history lessons along the way.If I need to know the back-story of Linux, the various other Novell products, Linus Torvalds, the Internet, the ISO OSI model or the personal computer, I'll look it up online.I needed an in depth course on SuSE 10.Instead, I got a bloated introduction riddled with inane redundancy, tangential trivia and dubiously helpful instructions while completely lacking in any comprehensive detail. This book was at least four times as long as was needed for their level of instruction.
1-0 out of 5 stars Suse 10.0 bible
I feel as though i have wasted money and time with this book, i installed suse 3mths ago for the first time, and did so without the book which i bought 2 months into suse use. As a genuine beginner with an iq of 144 i have found this book of no help and i payed 26 pounds for it from PC world, i have now had to order 2 other suse books in an attempt to solve the few probs i have with suse like samba printer share, some media wont stream (only some) and why firefox has flash but not konquer? also help with installing nvidia drivers newer than the ones available through yast. The dvd is virtually identicle to oss and you still have to compile decss to play videos. All in all very disapointing and i was thrilled coming home with it.
