5-0 out of 5 stars A good book on bash shell Scripts
This shell script book is good. It will get you up to speed and you will start writing bash shell scripts. Indeed, there are some typos but they don't really hurt the goal of the book, which is to teach you the bash shell script on Linux platform.
1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible index for a language with many symbols
Bash has very many operators/symbols, e.g. [[ ]]
1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere
I ended up going back to my old shell scripting book from 1990.It's better than this one - at least the description of quoting, pattern matching, arrays, uh just about everything is better than this book.Buying this book was a mistake that you can avoid.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Programmers with Some Experience!
"C++ GUI Programming with GT 3" Is an good book for an experienced Linux programmer. Most of the examples do compile properly on SuSe Linux 10.1. However, database connections are difficult to configure for MySql.
1-0 out of 5 stars It would be decent, but the format destroys everything
The only reason you would want to read this book is if you were interested in building a spreadsheet application from the ground up following instructions. This is NOT a reference, you can not just look up one sunject, it does nt work that way, subjects are just spread everywhere throughout the book. This was a complete waste of money.

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad my company bought the book because it's a waste
I'm glad my company bought the book and I didn't waste my own money on it.I'm back looking for a better book now.Writing style is terse.Very scant operational discussion about what is going on behind the scenes with UIC and MOC. The only reason I gave two stars is because I did use one of the examples in the book for production use, heavily modified. Otherwise the book is dry, humorless, and uninspiring.Buy it only if you are using someone else's money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Red Hat Linux Reference Book
This book is ideal for those who work with Linux and want something handy to use as reference. It is extremely comprehensive and complete. This book gives enough detail on just about every facet of RH Linux that if it doesn't come right out and answer your questions, it will certainly provide you with enough specific info to get you pointed in the right direction. I wouldn't recommend this book for someone new to Linux as there are other books out there which lend themselves to teaching the fundamentals much more effectively (slower pace step-by-step books). However for people who know Linux and are looking for a comprehensive resource manual, you couldn't find a better book. A must have for anyone working with Linux in: tech support, system administration, application development, etc. Worth every penny!

4-0 out of 5 stars little depth but very broad
If you are experienced in UNIX-like OS, this is a good review.
3-0 out of 5 stars good for a beginner
I've been a Solaris admin for a while and am recently moving towards linux. The book looked fairly complete on a quick view at the book store. After owning it for a few months I find I can't find the answer to my more advanced questions in this book.So I'd say it is a good book for beginners, but not for someone that is looking for an advanced linux reference. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative but geared towards Red Hat.
This book was very informative but there were too many references to Red Hat.A book like this, I feel, should be well rounded and give examples of other distro's as well.I used this book in a study group with very knowledgeable people and many years of experience. At times it would be mentioned that they learned some new things from the reading material which surprised me!All in all, it's a good book to get started in the Linux realm and you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for the Linux+ Exam
This book is well-written. I did not have a problem reading this book since I had some UNIX (HP-UX and Sun Solaris) background. Topics are clearly explained and easy to understand. Chapter 9 on "Boot Loaders" was a huge help for me. In chapter 9 the author covers well dual booting with windows and Linux.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite par, but it will help...
Truthfully, I found this book to be a little bit... off... It has good information in it, but many of the review questions were a bit obscure... I would buy this book for the content only. Make sure you have another prep book like the Sybex book to contrast with before you go test... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars sound advice for an oss project

4-0 out of 5 stars Open Source Software > How To Get From B to E
Producing open source software is not an easy task.Without the management and insight of a team of developers or the money that can go along with getting software out the door, designing and developing open source software can be a tough task that many managers wouldn't want the challenge of taking on.Challenges abound in the open source world, and that is why the book 'Producing Open Source Software : How to Run a Successful Free Software Project' by Karl Fogel is a welcome addition to the library of software books out on the market.

2-0 out of 5 stars Distracting Diatribe
The subtle attacks on Microsoft products throughout the book (particularly at the beginning) was distracting.
4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Windows to Linux Migration Toolkit
Linux has grown tremendously in the server Operating System market, primarily due to the fact that it is stable and secure. But this growth has been restricted to the bigger corporates, with server farms and data centers, who have the resources to hire former Unix sysadmins and get high-priced consultants to manage migration of their existing IT infrastructure to a Linux-based one. Small and Medium Enterprises till now have generally remained Microsoft customers, because quite often, there is no specialized IT department in such organizations, and Microsoft's server products have GUI interfaces that make it easy for laypersons to set-up and administer services. Besides, Microsoft has tightly integrated services, like Active Directory and Exchange, which is a further incentive to use Microsoft server products.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental instructional guide
Windows Linux Migration Toolkit is a fundamental instructional guide to installing and operating Linux by migrating from a Windows platform to any Linux variant. Covering Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and all Linux distributors, Windows Linux Migration Toolkit covers everything systems administrators need to know to make the big operating system switch. From planning one's migration effectively to understanding Windows and Linux authentication, integrating anti-spam and anti-virus services, the basics of Linux file systems and much more, Windows Linux Migration Toolkit is a solid question-and-answer resource and a must-have for anyone preparing the transition. An accompanying CD-ROM includes special utilities and migration scripts to automate the tasks. Screenshots, diagrams, and step-by-step walkthroughts make Windows Linux Migration Toolkit easy-to-follow and useful for troubleshooting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delivers!
This book delivers on its title. I found some of the code useful immediately straight out of the book. I also have his Linux Programming book. It too is very good. I would have given it five stars; but for lack in two areas: firstly, I would have liked coverage of dynamic restart of client / server apps and logging; secondly, as there isn't a CD provided, a download site is given which reroutes you somewhere else and I couldn't find any code to download. This also occured for my other SAMS book by the same author.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fair beginner's book to socket programming
This is very readable and usable as a beginner's guide to socket programming. One particular aspect I liked is that the author took the pain to illustrate the socket structure well which many book glossed over. Also, the sample codes are short and illustrate the use of the socket calls well. The book could have been expanded to cover HTTP,SOAP,XML, etc to give it a 5 star. Also think that the publisher could have used better quality print material.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Explanations, Sad examples
The code examples and editing mistakes almost force you to have asecondary book just to validate what the author is doing.3 stars weregiven for the completenes and solid explanation of concepts.I should'vejust picked up the out of print version of Richard Stevens "UNIXNetwork Programming", classic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to LAMP servers for average computer user
The focus in this book is on one of the most common implementations of Linux; as a complete Internet solution with a Linux server, Apache web server, MySQL database, and PHP language. This combination is commonly called a LAMP installation. The authors lead the reader through how to pick an appropriate Linux distribution for your needs, install and configure the Apache web server, use MySQL to store data and use PHP to build Web applications.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good broad strokes, light on details
I'm a web developer and bought this book hoping that it would--as advertised--teach me how to setup and install a working LAMP server. I found this book to read more like a checklist than anything.Install this, uncheck that. The book provided little insight as to the reasoning behind these decisions, nor did it provide any detail on how to fine tune or configure some of the more arcane components like email or ftp.It definitely did not teach you anything about how to live and operate in the Linux environment. These I had to figure out on my own. This book reads like a free website article repackaged and bound.Stay clear of this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars a non-technical book for non-technical people
50% of its contents can be found in a general Red Hat Linux book. Most other parts can be found in the web sites of Apache, Webmin and so on. This is the worst book I bought from Amazon.com, the first book from Sitepoint. I wouldn't buy a book from Sitepoint for a long time. I feel sorry for my company which paid for the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You can stop looking for other books!
2 years ago I was promoted to a tech. management position requiring me to administer several linux machines. Yes, I was a brand new to the world of linux and searched long and hard through book after book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Best for Linux newbie or end user not admin
Was looking for a book geared for RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 system admins looking for info on configuring RAID with mdadm, lvm2, and ended up with a book more geared for a desktop user more interested in games and novelties than serious system administration. I really don't think the book is geared toward Enterprise users and the word "Enterprise" should not be in the title. For what it goes over it does a good job but I was expecting more core unix admin information and examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for people starting out in Linux
This books pretty much covers it all. From networking, mysql and dns to gaming, video/audio, office tools, programming, etc. etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chirillo Strikes Again!
As a companion with his other title, Hack Attacks Revealed, John Chirillo gives us another great book on keeping our networks away from the prying eyes and stubby fingers of the those out there that don't need to be inside our networks, white or black hatters. The content is very well-structured, all concepts are supported by numerous examples so even if one doesn't understand the subject in it's depth he or she can find an answer to a specific real-world question. They say sequels are never better than the original. This may be somewhat true for this book. This is a VERY GOOD book. It's just that it's not as good as the first volume. It is a lot better...it is so much more geared for both sides of the IT spectrum...those of us up to our necks at the NOCs, and for the SOHO admin who needs juicy morsels for his knowledge palate... I have already started to implement Chirillo's countermeasures from this book, on top of the ones we are forced to use in a government system. Kudos to the author! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to have
I have not used shell scripting in the long time. I ordered this book and it helps me refresh a lot about Unix and shell scripting leanrt in school many years ago as undergraduate student. The book is well-written and will keep you excited. One important thing is: practice as you are reading. By the time you finish the book you should be able to grab much from the book. I downloaded the Sun Solaris 9 that I installed on x86 computer and I am playing with some flavors of shell writing small shell scripts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro Book for Real Beginners
I came from purely Windows environment and I know nothing about UNIX or Linux except a few C commands many years ago. I tried a few books like shell scripting, learning the shell and by example, but I gave up as their speed was too fast for a beginner like me. Only after a few intro pages, these books started to write complex commands which I was confused and unable to continue. The worst thing is, most of them don't explain in details what those commands do and expect readers to know. This book does not assume you know basic UNIX commands, and it covers the basics in first section. It has short chapters and each of them tries to teach you the basic concepts in one area with simple examples. This is the book that gives you confidence to move on and it does not try to feed you with too much knowledge at a time. After reading this book, you are equipped with basic idea of what shell scripting is and able to move on with advanced books.A very good step-by-step book for beginners who know very little or nothing about UNIX shell programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of the shell!
Becoming thouroghly proficent in various shells and being able to write shell scripts whether simple or of vast complexity is a fundemental requirement for becoming *NIX savvy.Whatever your flavor, Linux, OpenBSD, Solaris - you must know shell scripting to be taken seriously.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite disappointing
The Linux+ exam isn't easy ANYMORE. I took version 2 and there was NO WAY that this book could get you past the exam. There are lots of errors and some important content is not even discussed. I read a lot more than this book before I passed the exam. I even took a Linux+ 5-day 40 hour class. I suggest you download as many of the free Linux+ and LPI practice exams that you can find on the Internet before attempting the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets you a pass!
Excellent study guide. Very easy to read and straight to the point. I passed the exam Feb/2004 using this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Confusing, Error Prone, & Poorly Written
Stay away from this book! It has a million errors in it. It frequently makes reference to concepts as if you already know them, even though they are either never explained or explained at a later point in the book. Some of the sections seem to have been written by someone who can't even speak English. I was so worried I wouldn't pass the Linux+ test with this heap of trash that I went out and bought another book. This book is frustrating as heck!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora, Fourth Edition
I found this book to be very readable and a good way of getting up to speed on Linux. The book: (i) guides you how to load Fedora onto your computer, (ii) describes how Linux works, and (iii) discusses Linux applications, networking and scripts. The author also touches on the Red Hat Enterprise version of Linux throughout the text. The Linux installation section is well written with plenty of screen shots showing the various screens during installation. The other sections are also very readable. The book comes with a couple of CDs containing Fedora Core1.A reader may wish to download a more recent version (Fedora 4 is available at the time this review was written). This book is a good springboard in getting into the Linux world with Fedora; however I think that a person will want to supplement this book with a reference on Linux (such as Linux in a Nutshell) in order to get a more detailed coverage on topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for what I was looking for...
In my quest to learn Linux, I've been working through the book Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora by Bill McCarty (O'Reilly). This is exactly what I was looking for in a learning guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf
The Linux Web Server CD Bookshelf gave me everything I needed right at my finger tips. If there was only one major reason that you should buy this Bookshelf it would be the search capabilities alone. This Bookshelf comes with the ability to search all 6 books at once for any subject you want. This was the first type of CD Bookshelf that I have ordered. If it is possible I will only buy CD Bookshelves from now on. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference
Putting aside the CD-Roms, the alpha layout of the book itself is wonderful and just what I was looking for. Very concise and and again the book itself is worth the money. It is made to be used as a resource and a reference.I wish other books were laid out this way. After spending hrs and hrs looking thru books I finally found my first choice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial/reference on many topics
Is this book out of print? I hope not, because it's a great book. I am an experienced programmer, and it fills in some details about things I knew fairly well, and it helps me learn things I don't know much about.4-0 out of 5 stars Good tutorial and reference.Nothing spectacular.
Covers many topics, anyone who works and codes on a linux/unix environment will find something useful here --3-0 out of 5 stars A good starter book, but by no means a "bible".
John Goerzen took on a very difficult task in writing this book. The Linux programming environment is extremely complex and each aspect of the environment can't be covered adequately in a single book. This book proves that. Goerzen has taken all of the majorly important topics in the Linux programming model and compressed them into 800 pages. Unfortunately, in doing so, none of the topics are covered in a manner that doesn't leave you with a million questions waiting to be answered. Most of the chapters really should have been an introductory chapter into another book that covers the material more in detail. Most the matter is rushed through. A lot of details are glossed over. And even the editing was done poorly as there were enough typographical errors that made reading it feel like a chore. On the positive side, there weren't many technical errors and Goerzen does give you enough of a taste in most of the topics that should motivate you to actually go out and actually learn some of the technology in depth. All of the material he covers is very much relevant and important to programming in Linux. I would encourage people to buy this book, but by no means regard it as "The Bible" of Linux programming, It should be looked at more as a field guide that will show you where to get started conceptually and where you need to look for more of an explanation. Goerzen made a noble effort, but this material just couldn't be covered properly in 800 pages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
My comment goes out to the first (very old now) edition, 1999. This was the first book I've read about linux security and it's very well written, well organized and cover most importat topics about system security and internet security as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Who is this book for?
I'll start off by saying that I am CISSP, CCSP and SANS GSEC certified. I have read a couple of the Maximum Security series books and I'm constantly disappointed. First off the book is about 5 times too long for a novice that is curious about the subject and under informative for a professional. It also seems to cover some "neeto" programs you can use to secure your system. For the amount of pages I thought it would at least delve into some kernel hacking, buffer overflow/underrun protection. The author seems to love to give scare tactic examples of attacks that happened years before the book was published. If someone is reading this book they most likely understand the threat. I don't need to the police to tell me about murders that have gone on in Baltimore to convince me to put locks on my doors. This kind of off subject garbage makes this book even heavier, and not from an information stand point. Published in 2001 it seem that is was out of date then as well. It covers, for the lack of better description, low level hacker tools in a majority of descriptions of tools. For example the "Sniffer" chapter mentions nothing about dsniff a very popular and powerful sniffing utility. I would not recommend this book to a beginner as there is way too much garbage taking you through the installation of basic pieces of software. Never mentioning some different options maybe you should be selecting during the install. There is no need to cut and paste the contents of the INSTALL file from Tripwire, most of the guides for installing are word for word from the programs own install and readme files. I would not recommend this to a professional as well as it does not go into great enough detail about anything unless you don't want to read man files and would rather have it in the form of a 13lbs book. My guess is this book was thrown together poorly with haste and by someone that has little to no experience in network security let alone security on ONE system. To sum this review up, there is nothing in this book that isn't already on google.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ANY LINUX USER!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Scarily Inaccurate
I don't know anything about the subject matter covered in the later chapters, but the Perl that the authors demonstrate in chapters 3 to 7 is some of the most badly written and buggy Perl that I have ever seen. Many of the example programs won't even compile as they have typos in them that would have been caught if the book had been given the most cursory glance by a technical editor. I searched the IDG (sorry, 'Hungry Minds') web site to see what errata had been made available, but there didn't seem to be any.
