5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book was quite thorough in its coverage of the material, and the practice questions were superb (although it would have been nice if there were more of them on the CD). I had no trouble setting up the examsim software on my Linux box, so they must have fixed that problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars good setup advice
Contains much useful advice about the environmental needs of a cluster. Especially power and cooling. Plus it describes ancillary equipment like racks and switches. The latter are important, because without fast communication between the nodes in the cluster, performance will rapidly degrade.
5-0 out of 5 stars Consider the Alternatives.
I'm the author.1-0 out of 5 stars Alas, a good Linux Clustering book has yet to be written
The book is divided into eleven chapters, unevenly distributed among three sections: an overview of clustering for Linux, building clusters, and maintaining clusters. Four appendices provide brief information about online clustering resources, options for RedHat's "Kickstart," options for DHCP, and information on "Condor ClassAd Machine Attributes."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Setting up a SHO Linux Network
This is an excellent book to start with if you are considering setting up a Linux network for your home or small office. The intended audience is assumed to have some basic programming skills and understands the priority of network security. If you have never written a make file or know what make is, you might want to start with a more fundamental book; you will struggle understanding the concepts of this book. If you have never used UNIX or Linux, you will be quickly LOST!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Overview and Common Practices
This is a good first book to purchase if you're getting into Linux Administration. It focuses more on common practices rather than configurations and how-to's.If you're looking to get an idea of how to build your environment (or make it better), this is a good book to start with, then purchase the specific manuals once you've decided on a course of action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Printed Professional Quality Book
This book fits into the space between the general everything there is to know about Linux books (which give limited space to each subject) and highly specialized books that cover only one application such as Apache or sendmail. It's a niche book intended for people aministering a Linux network. It contains what you need to know to set up a network and keep it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I've been waiting for.
Finally, a good book about application development with mozilla is available. Cross out the 'Rapid' from the title if you don't like it, because the book actually covers application development with mozilla in general (although it really is rapid with mozilla ;) ).
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for XUL development
If you're thinking about learning XUL, this is a must have. I haven't been able to put the book down since it arrived at my door. The best part of it yet has been the explanations about javascript. This is as valuable for XUL as it is for normal web development. I've already started and almost completed building my first mozilla application.
2-0 out of 5 stars a bit disappointed
As other readers pointed out, though this book has a lot of information it is a bit messy making it hard for completly newbies to the Moz platform. Every chapter took me one or more deep re-reading (which is not something I appreciated very much).

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
This was a very disappointing purchase. Gagne breezes through any areas where Linux is actually difficult, focussing instead on the stuff that any competent computer user will have no trouble using. I don't need to have my hand held by an expert to figure out OpenOffice. What I do need is a lot more detail about installing the OS and configuring my system.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad but there are better books
This is a good book for instalation and setup.
2-0 out of 5 stars To basic for a prior windows user.
The book went over things that work very similar to the way windows works.I was hoping for a through explination on the install which was not there. The book focuses on how to use the kde desktop (which works alot like windows).I read about half the book when I put it down and just jumped in and tried what worked in windows. Like right clicking on the desktop to custimize it and it brought up a menu with a configure desktop as an option that brought up whatI was looking for.I found the jumping in and playing option got me up and running alot quicker than reading the book and following along.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars useful tips
This second edition covers a large range of cluster topics. Firstly, in terms of why you might need a Beowulf. Then, how to assemble the hardware. And how to install linux on the nodes. The book is valuable not least because it encapsulates decades of knowledge about running clusters, not just of the Beowulf type. The chapters' authors hail from places like Argonne and Oak Ridge National Labs, where there have been research groups using many different types of clusters for years.
5-0 out of 5 stars readable and informative beowulf resource
I've read this book cover to cover, and then gone back to various parts throughout the course of building a large beowulf. It's the best resource I've found so far. I've recommended it other folks who have also had the same experience--it *explains* beowulfs in very clear and readable language. Excellent primer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware
My supervising professor bought this book for me to use in my senior project and I'm glad it wasn't my purchase. My major complaint is that the code examples in the PVM section are trash.I'm not sure if Al Geist (one of the co-authors of PVM) was rushed or thought that it would be good for students to find and correct errors in the code.Perhaps the best part of the book is Chapter 18 which details the experience at Argonne National Lab of setting up their (massive) cluster, Chiba City. There are many better books out there.Try Parallel Programming by Berry Wilkinson and Michael Allen, Parallel Programming with MPI by Peter Pacheco, or anything by William Gropp. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book,
This is a great book whether you've are an intermediate Linux user or a true novice. I had used Linux on and off but not really dove in to it like I had with MS Windows. After purchasing this book though I have completly migrated off of Windows and now use SUSE Linux full time. The book is great at using examples to help certain things stay in your head. I also like the way this book starts off teaching the Linux GUI (X) and then moves on to the command-line, most Linux books I've read are the complete opposite. Once you learn the GUI you move on to command-line which helps you stay focused on the book since the command line can get fustrating when first learning to use it. Great book, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginners guide
I am a computer nerd, and I've been using Suse for roughly a year now, so you would think this book would be beneath me.However, it is an entertaining read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't explain things in great detail
I tried this book and it was great until i started downloading files, I kept getting error codes. I'm thinking I did not have a file that i needed. I also read the chapter about playing dvd movies and online video not very helpful.every time you download something that some one mentions either on the web or in a not very well written book like this, there is either another file that you need or a conflict that has to be fixed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I need at this stage
I've been working with Novell Netware for many years and needed something to ease me into the linux side of things. It works well by taking all the services you know and love on the NW kernel and shows you how to get the equivalents running in linux.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
I have been a Novell dealer since the 80's.I also have extensive Unix (SCO) experience, though my Linux experience is much weaker.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is great but CD has a problem
The book is well written in clear language and the example scripts are written in a special font making it easy to understand. I just cannot get the CD containing the compiler to work and it's vital to the lessons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning the core language but not much else
This book is not bad if you are mostly interested in learning the basics of the language but without the few "bonus" chapters it has at the end the Linux content is close to zero. In the standard part of the book the only thing about Linux that is mentioned is how to compile using GCC, which isn't even strictly Linux because it can also run on Windows.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor.. Very poor
This book is full of mistakes. It also begins by teaching you to program one way, and then tells you that this is wrong. I picked up this book as a refresher, because I have not done any C++ or UNIX in 10 years, but even I could pick out the mistakes in the book. It does not explain the important aspects of C++ very well, skipping over most things with just a cursory description of what is going on. Do not get this book.. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Start somewhere else
People who write compter books often make one classic error -- in explaining a topic they refer to other commands and topics briefly, with no explanation. If you are new to the subject you are left bewildered.Ifyou have some experience you know what they are talking about.4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but a couple of typos
This is a great book. It has a couple of typos, but nothing major (although it may confuse a few novices). If you need a book that gives you all the syntax and commands for programming the korn shell then I wouldrecommend this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro book AND reference

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and superficial
This book is outdated and provides very little real information on programming in Java.As other reviewers have stated, it is primarily a list of (outdated) Java programming resources. The author also makes the mistake of assuming throughout the book that the book will be read from cover to cover. As I tried, however much in vain, to use the book as a reference, as I thinks most readers do, I constantly ran into unexplained references to "phenomena" and had to go back through the book looking for the initial explanation of said phenomena.Of course, we should always expect that a book nearly three years old would be somewhat outdated, but it would be nice, for a change, to find a publisher driven by more than mere greed who would recognize the diminishing utility of a book like this and adjust the price accordingly. After reading quite a bit of the book, in retrospect I would not even pay half of the [price] when I bought this book, but at least a 50% price-reduction would have meant a little less of my hard-earned dinero wasted and thus available to buy a truly useful book on Java Programming on Linux, if one truly exists...This book should be pulled from the eShelves and replaced with something useful.SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is waist of money
This book dose not teach you any think, everything is a reference to some other sources.2-0 out of 5 stars java programming TOOLS in linux(redhat)
I don't know if the other reviewers have read the books carefully or not because the books have been over-rated. First of all, the book is filled withreference stuff for both linux and java which do not help people to understand either of them. The useful stuffs are to help people WHERE to get java softwares, HOW to install them and how to CONFIGURE them both as SYSTEM wide and USER limited usage and HOW to RUN THESOFTWARES. In these aspects, the book did not do a very good job. The one website the book referred to is BLACKDOWN which is a good site but the java softwares there are not updated often( it still carries jdk1.2 beta ! ).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good book to read just before the test
The purpose of these types of books (Exam Crams and Passports) are to provide a means for a quick review before taking a cert test. That said, this book accomplishes the goal. I read this book a week out before taking my Linux+ test which further provided me more example questions to go through. However, they are still not quite indicative of the questons found on the Linux+ exam. However, they better than the ones typically provided with other Linux+ study books. The cram sheet is always useful to look over just before entering the test room. Use this book in addition to other resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linux for Geeks - indeed!
The book is a valuable reference text that may help to identify and repair many problems on the desktop or server. Linux professionals responsible for the operation and maintenance of desktop computers and servers will benefit most from the wide range of solutions provided for common problems. Semi-geeky Linux users may enjoy an informative look under the hood of Linux, even if they have low expectations of making the repairs themselves. Non-geeks, who just want to use Linux, are best off with Linux for Non-Geeks by Rickford Grant, published by No Starch Press, affiliated with O'Reilly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Linux is a great operating system but like every other one it has some annoyances that may crop up from time to time. The purpose of this book is to help the reader to get Linux to work the way they want it to without getting annoyed in the process. As such the target audience is the Linux power user and system administrators.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not for true "geeks" at all.
This is another book that implies it's for power users, yet most of what's in here can be found in any garden variety book on how to run Linux.Only part of this book is aimed at "geeks".

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite obsolete now
I took the exam last Friday and I just got a confirmation that I'm a RHCE now, so I hope my info is pretty recent. First of all I enjoy Kara's language. It's really friendly and it's a kind of loving mom teaching her children style. It's not so common for technical books and I really like it. I agree with other reviewers that the book has some mistakes but usually they are not very significant for your test results. Probably the right way to say is "they were not" because this book covers 6.x version of RedHat and the current exam is based on 7.2. It makes a big difference. They really included many things specific to the latest software version. Some questions from the practice test in this book are still very similar to real ones, but that multiple choice test is just one task out of 3 and it's probably the easiest one. This book doesn't help you much to get prepared for troubleshouting or installation tasks.Installation, GRUB, X Windows, network security, service management - all those things have been changed significantly. 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is full of errors.
This book is announced as a supplement to a study guide. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reading the cover of a book is a good idea
The reader who wrote the "Utter waste" review failed to even read the cover of the book where it says "The perfect supplement to all certification study guides."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Books Out there on SAMBA
I tried to get started with SAMBA, but could never get off the ground using material printed in many Linux books. After going through this book, I realized many key concepts that I was missing, such as windows domain accounts to Unix account mappings and such.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great technical reference for advanced use of Samba
This is not an introduction to Samba but a technical reference written by those who know it best - the Samba Team.If you already know something about Samba then this is the place you will find very detailed explanations of all the internal and external capabilities of Samba-3.0.11 and higher. While it is easy enough to find information on how to set Samba up as a file and print server, how to use its other features is harder information to come by.This book details setting up Samba as a domain controller, backup domain controller, or domain member, network browsing, access controls, record locking, securing Samba, interdomain trusts, printing support, user profiles, administration, monitoring, and tuning.A voluminous tome, most people will not be inclined to read through it but would more likely read the sections relevant to their current needs and the book is organized so that it is easy to use that way.A true technical reference it has everything you are likely to ever want to know about Samba-3 and how to set it up correctly as well as how to resolve common problems. This is a reference that I will be keeping close at hand and you will want to too if you use Samba-3.The Official Samba-3 Howto and Reference Guide, Second Edition is highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointed
Anxious to set up samba at home I headed down to the local bookstore and picked up this book at full price (perhaps the only samba 3 book there). I think I read about 1/4 of the book and have now decided it will be going back tomorrow. It's easy to read if you have some Windows and some Linux/UNIX experience, but every chapter is plagued with sentences an 8th grade student failing English could have pointed to problems! Sometimes it was difficult to determine what the meaning of some statements should be. In one chapter a discussion of non-encrypted passwords repeated advantages from the discussion of encrypted passwords, advantages that clearly do not exist!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I begin to understand Linux
Microsoft's introduction of XP also introduced outrageous Microsoft user agreements I could never accept.Furthermore I was sick of Windows security issues, viruses, instability, and software conflicts. The GNU/Linux FREE as in freedom philosophy made sense to me, so I chose Linux FREEdom over Mac's wanna-be a monopoly world.A copy of Mandrake Linux sat on my shelf awaiting a Linux guru to help me install it, until late one night when Windows irrevocably crashed in the middle of a project I had to finish before bed.In a panic I installed Linux (along with a broad suite of apps) on an old hard drive I had, recovered my files from the Windows drive, and was working on my project again within 45 minutes. That was more than two years ago and I never looked back.I have a fast, stable, secure, virus free operating system with more and better apps than I could afford with Windows.3-0 out of 5 stars Is it worth the hype?
Well, I picked up second edition of the book "Linux System Administration" soon after I read excellent "introductory" type of the book, "Linux for Windows Administrators" by Mark Minasi. It was a logical next step for Unix/Linux newbie like me to pick up more advanced guide for Linux SA.Now, I can only confirm that the book is worth the Linux Journal award in 2001 as being "One of the most indispensable Linux Books". 4-0 out of 5 stars Brings the beginners to the next level...
This book is perfect for the person who has been tinkering with Linux long enought to have started outgrowing the GUI based tools that the distros are spoon feeding users with. Read more
