5-0 out of 5 stars Good exam preparation support!
I used this book in addition to RedHat's instructor led training, and managed to pass the test on my first try with a score of over 90%!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the RHEL 3 exam
Having been in a management position for a while I was a bit rusty and felt I didn't have the current hands on experience required to sit this exam directly.I used this book as prep for the 4 day Red Hat Boot camp leading up to the RHCE exam.It covered the topics required for the exam quite well, despite some obvious typos (Whatever you read, you should read critically anyway. IMHO)
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Exam Prep
I wish I could say I had finished the book and passed the RHCE, but I am still a month or two away. Still, I have advanced my Linux knowledge significantly and am having a blast. Of the 6 or so Linux books I own, this is the best and should have been the first. If you are thinking about taking the RHCE or are just wanting to make Linux admin easier and/or more straightforward, then this book is a must have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solaris System Admin Book
have used this book to upgrade my Solaris Admin certification to Solaris 10. I've had a few versions of Solaris certifications, and I can say it for sure that this is the best SCSA certification book I have read so far. The author does an excellent job in staying true to the exam objectives and yet presenting the material as a cohesive course in basic Solaris 10 system administration. There is a perfect logical flow. The author starts each topic from scratch and covers it to an adequate depth, while defining and explaining all terms and concepts on the way. That makes it a self contained book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not really impressed
I've taken and been a certified Sun Solaris administrator for many years.I decided to upgrade my certification to Solaris 10 and purchased this book as a reference. It's a good reference, but was not really a contributing factor in preparing for the exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars Passed Both the Exams
Passed both the exams (310-200 and 310-202) by studying just from this book. Feels great! Along the way, this book cleared many doubts and confusions that I had. I'm very pleased with my score on the exam, and with this book. Great book! It's going to stay in my shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have reference book
This book is a "must-have" resource for anyone who has an interest in testing and assessment.I am a psychometrican, and it is a widely used resource among our psychometrics staff, as well as, with our measurement consultants and assessment specialists. It provides a comprehensive background into test reliability and validity. In addition, it presents many helpful tools for constructing all types of items. The checklists are especially beneficial, as well as, the chapter on interpreting score reports.Because the book is so comprehensive, it may best be used as guidebook and/ or reference book, rather than a book that one would read from cover to cover in the hopes to digest it all.I cannot say how many times I have referred back to this book in both my educational and professional life.I believe that it is written on a level that is relatively easy to follow, and the numerous examples that he provides help to illustrate the material. It is the most comprehensive book of it's kind in the field of educational assessment. I am also a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and many students that I worked with during my doctoral study there also hold an opinion similar to mine. If the book is used in the way that it is intended to be used, it will probably be one of the most used reference books in your educational assessment library.

1-0 out of 5 stars UGH! Sorry, but one of the worst textbooks...
I really hate to write detrimental things about books I do not like, but this is a required book in some class at my University...and frankly, I don't know why. To be honest, I think part of it was the way the book wasused in the classroom, and how the professors made us jump from one topicto another without gaining a full understanding of the first one! Just incase someone thinks I am just a student who could not hack the topic, my BSand MS are in Neuroscience, and I took statistics twice before this...oncein neurostatistics and once in epidemiology. Try and read some of thejournals in Neuroscience some time...Believe me they are much worse, orshould be much worse then a social science document such as this.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Might as well buy the RHCE book by jang (4th edition)
I bought the RHCE book (jang 4th edition) and used it to study for the RHCE exam. Because the exam encompasses both the RHCT abd RHCE exam, i thought i could use the RHCT book as a way to refine skills geared strictly towards just the RHCT portion of the exam. This book really is just a subset (cut and paste) of the RHCE book from jang, with a very few changes. You are better off just getting the RHCE book by jang and using it to study for both the RHCT and RHCE. The skills you learn, although not super in depth, will force you to learn or relearn key concepts that will potentially be on the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just an Exam Cram
The rise of Red Hat has been marvelous to watch.Starting with a 'free' operating system, they have produced an integrated software system that rivals the big kid on the block. With this kind of success, comes more success. Now you see job ads for people who know Red Hat. And with this comes certifications. How do you prove that you've even typed 'ls' into your system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best among the LPIC prep books
I just passed LPIC 101 with a good score thanks to this book. It follows the LPIC objectives very closely. Since the publication of the book the objectives were updated at the end of last year, so you might have to read upon those changed ones.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Linux administration overview as well as study guide
I picked this book up to use as a study guide for taking the LPIC-1 102 exam.(I passed, by the way.)This book was good read that kept my interest and proved a good overview to Linux system administration as well as a LPIC-1 study guide. And it covered a few topics in generally better detail than some other Linux books I've read.Even after the test is passed, I expect I will refer back to this book from time to time as one of my Linux references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good review of currently available software
Title:Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent kickstart
Excellent kickstart for the budding pentester (such as myself) Covers as far as i can see most areas, and creating an apetite for more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Four stars if you don't have any other security assessment books
I am not sure why Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit (PTOST) was published. If you have no other security assessment books, you may find PTOST helpful.Otherwise, I don't believe this book offers enough value to justify purchasing it.Other books -- some published by Syngress -- cover some of the same ideas, and 5 of PTOST's chapters are published in other books anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book was quite thorough in its coverage of the material, and the practice questions were superb (although it would have been nice if there were more of them on the CD). I had no trouble setting up the examsim software on my Linux box, so they must have fixed that problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners

3-0 out of 5 stars good book to read just before the test
The purpose of these types of books (Exam Crams and Passports) are to provide a means for a quick review before taking a cert test. That said, this book accomplishes the goal. I read this book a week out before taking my Linux+ test which further provided me more example questions to go through. However, they are still not quite indicative of the questons found on the Linux+ exam. However, they better than the ones typically provided with other Linux+ study books. The cram sheet is always useful to look over just before entering the test room. Use this book in addition to other resources.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad For a Beginning
I got interested in Linux a year ago and i consider my self a beginer. This book was written for someone how workes with Linux for two or three years tips for taking the LPI exam. This book is not the best for begginers at all. In addition, many topics are out of date.
2-0 out of 5 stars Needs update badly
Like many of the O'Reilley titles, this book has become dated and is much less useful than it might be.This book needs to be updated to reflect changes in the LPI exam since it's publication.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite obsolete now
I took the exam last Friday and I just got a confirmation that I'm a RHCE now, so I hope my info is pretty recent. First of all I enjoy Kara's language. It's really friendly and it's a kind of loving mom teaching her children style. It's not so common for technical books and I really like it. I agree with other reviewers that the book has some mistakes but usually they are not very significant for your test results. Probably the right way to say is "they were not" because this book covers 6.x version of RedHat and the current exam is based on 7.2. It makes a big difference. They really included many things specific to the latest software version. Some questions from the practice test in this book are still very similar to real ones, but that multiple choice test is just one task out of 3 and it's probably the easiest one. This book doesn't help you much to get prepared for troubleshouting or installation tasks.Installation, GRUB, X Windows, network security, service management - all those things have been changed significantly. 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is full of errors.
This book is announced as a supplement to a study guide. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reading the cover of a book is a good idea

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a brush-up, kind
You're not going to get certified with this book, but the CD is pretty good at testing your Backup and Recovery knowledge. The CD also quizzes you on Recovery Manager (RMAN), parameter files, Import, Export, SQL Loader and Listener Control utility. Everyone here is accurate; that Oracle DBA II test is very difficult to pass with this book alone, but any practice test helps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
If you use only this book, you will not pass the exam. The practice exams include topics that are not covered anywhere in the book. The level of detail provided by both the exams and the content is not sufficient to pass the real exam.I scored 95% - 100% consistently on all exams in this book including the 3 bonus exams on the cdrom and still did not pass the real exam.I found that the real exam covered several topics that either were not covered at all in this book or did not provide the level of detail or understanding necessary to pass the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not meet the Exam objectives
I used this book as supplement and the oracle press book (R. Velpuri) as main reference. This book published by sybex does not account for all the objectives covered in the exam (1z0-032). The books covers some of the topics but not into details. I read the whole book twice and gained some knowledge out of it but I believe it is not a complete study guide for preparing for the exam. I also used the practice exam questions on the CD. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
This book is out dated. It is based on Red Hat version 6.2. There have been many changes since then that could frustrate the reader who is trying to follow the examples in the book. If you are still using an older version of Red Hat, this is definetly a good reference, otherwise, wait for the second edition!

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless CD
The much-vaunted CD with the electronic version of the book can be used only under Windows. The only place this is mentioned is in a README file on the CD, which can only be viewed once you have bought the book. The primary reason I got this book was for the CD and as my laptop does not run Windows, I have wasted my money. Don't make the same mistake I did!

After reading through this book I found that I liked it not only for an exam guide but also as a source of quick answers to miscellaneous small questions. For example, I had a minor problem where I knew what the problem was and what had to be done, but could not remember the specific utility or specific steps needed.A quick turn to the appropriate section of the book and I had my answer. This is not a book that you would use to try to learn Linux and it does not profess to be such a book.On the other hand if you have a familiarity with Red Hat Linux and want a refresher, or a short summary of the most common administrative tasks this is an excellent book.If I were to take a good Linux book and write an outline so that I could just jump to the answers when I had questions this is the kind of book that I would end up with."Red Hat Certified Engineer Exam Notes" is a highly recommended read for anyone wanting a summary of Red Hat Linux in a well-organized format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
A great cram book. Short and to the point. Highly recommend reading it just before going to course to get an overview. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introductory Linux book
Of the books targeted at people who want to give Linux a try, I believe this is the best. It allows you to run Linux on your computer without having to install it and exposes you to many of the basics. (Note: it will not work equally well on all computers. I would say it has a high likelihood of success with a desktop PC and a low likelihood of success with a laptop. The reason is that the hardware used on laptops is more "specialized" in many respects than that used in desktop computers.)
3-0 out of 5 stars A worthy attempt at sharing GNU/Linux with Windows users
As a daily GNU/Linux user, it is easy to find fault with any CDROM-based "run-in-place" operating environment. The first thing one notices is that the speed of the operation is limited by the speed of your CDROM drive. Also, if you do not use a USB key, you have no configuration parameters or persistance of data across multiple boots.
3-0 out of 5 stars Yet another Linux walkthrough
I've read a bunch of these linux walkthroughs now and I haven't been impressed by them, this book included. The problem is that the coverage is too sweeping. There are too many screenshots and the coverage is way too broad. It's unclear to me how simply booting up a Linux distribution and playing with it for a little while isn't just as good as having this book walk you through it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide
This book is excellent as a quick study guide for the Solaris 8 SCSA exams.Whether one passes or not does not determine whether this is a good book or not.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good brief book for experienced guys....
This book is pretty helpful for those having good hands on experience. It helps to prepare in short time for them. It touches most of the test objectives. I scored 90+ in part I & II exam & used this book mostly. Here things are given very shortly. One shouldstudy this along with some good descriptive book for better result.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Prep for the Exams
This book covers both tests for the Solaris 8 Sys Admin cert.It has a practice test for each exam I & II (a good thing). It identifies the areas and the depth of proficiency needed for the exams.Take heed, Exam II coverage needs a little a more work (I felt).I blew the first exam out of the water and skimmed the surface on Exam II.Use this book as a road map to focus your study. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book, all you need to pass the exam
this is the only book I used the pass my SCNA. everything is in there but you have to read very carefully. It's a small book so you tend to read it fast but take your time and be patient.5-0 out of 5 stars Best for the job just like the other Crams.
Aimed at getting you through the exam, the best book for the job by far.Make sure you have been working with the product for a while, read a couple of good texts and then top it off with this book for the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to use, best one yet for exams...!
well, most people buying this book will not be coming into it blind. still it's the small things that trip you up.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Linux Beginners
I bought this book to get a premilinary insight into Linux and to move toward the path of certification. This book has served both as a guide to understanding basic Linux administration and as a solid reference. The material is based upon Red Hat 8, so newer Linux concepts such as Logical Volume Management are not covered.Useful for computer technicians learning the basics of Linux at a low cost.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Good" but just for a theory
I have RHCE and "yes" I bought this book but "no" it didn't help me. Why you ask? Because RedHat has changed their exam in Dec 2003. Please visit RedHat website to find out what they changed and how the exam will be given. Because of the NDA I'll be able to tell you that this exam is 100% performance based and it means that there are not going to be any multiple choise MSCE* kinds of questions. Everything will be based on your EXPERIENCE. Do yourself a favor, buy any kind of RedHat bible and brake your servers / networks so many times as humanly possible, then you'll be ready to take the exam. This book is good as any other Linux Bible books.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the RHCE Exam and good reference
My review is long overdue, But I felt this is needed since I'm now RHCE and people are asking me what I used to pass it. I just read this book plus used two old computers and viola...I passed. Just make sure you practice the sample exams at the end. Or better yet, get somebody to break your installation using the intruction from the book and you go fix it. The only reason I give it a 4 star is because it referred to RH 8 and the exam was version 9 which just came out when I took it. I'm sure the latest version would be a lot better. I still use this book from time to time as a reference. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Errors!
Here's a good example of how bad this book is because of all the errors.Chapter 8 is a review of the basics of the bash shell. It says on page 173 "Processes are covered in great detail in Chapter 6...".Chapter 6 in this book is about the vi editor, not processes, but Chapter 6 in the Exam Cram LPI 101 book is all about processes. They are just copying and pasting out of another book at this point, and they obviously aren't proof reading it. There are TONS of errors in this book. This is the worst Exam Cram book of all time!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!
This book is filled with errors.I was going to be nice and give it 2 stars, until I read this on page 122 about vi --> "Who wants to work with such an application when word processors such as Microsoft Word exist?"Are you kidding me?Has the author ever even worked with Linux before?I've read over 20 Exam Cram/Prep books before and this is easily the worst one.Go buy O'Reilly's LPI in a Nutshell. It covers both exams in one book and is much much better than this.
