5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, clear, and effective
EXCELLENT reference book. Material is presentedly lucidly, without the superfluous details. The extra visual guides facilitate the learning process extremely well. If you are looking for a book that covers the fundamentals (including flowing text and styling sheets), I HIGHLY recommend this visual quick guide book.
5-0 out of 5 stars From a novice Quarker
Those of us who communicate in spoken English sometimes despair of technical manuals written by those who don't. This is true even for those of us who are quite literate in computer-speak. This Vistual Quickstart Guide to QuarkXPress 6 is a wonderful exception. Quark is a highly intuitive program that makes sense once one grasps the basics, and I found this an excellent reference guide to learning this powerful program. However, I found it worked best if I was at my computer exploring the areas being discussed in the text. What was most helpful to me were the screen illustrations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Have you ever read the dictionary cover to cover?
Reading this book in order to learn QuarkXpress is akin to reading the dictionary cover to cover in order to learn the English language. Can it be done? Maybe. But it is not recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars thorough, clear and structured
I am a beginner with Avid and was daunted by all the different and options available to me. Monohan's book was just what I needed. I am currently giong through the book from A to Z, which gives me an overview of all the options and work-methods the program has. Even though I allready had set up my workspace, this book gave me some interesting tips. Even though I had allready developed a workflow for my previous projects, I learned some new options by reading this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Manual
I wish I just had the manual that came with the program. Often times you find the book more so telling you what it can do rather than how to actually do it. All in all, with it's help and a little time spent with the editing system you can figure this program out. It doesn't stray too far from the other major non-linear editing systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guide to Illustrator CS
I purchased this book upon the recommendation of my professor for a college class in Computer Design. It is my first experience with the Visual QuickStart Guides and I am very impressed. It has been a valuable tool in helping me understand and use this previously unfamiliar software application. The table of contents is clear and well organized and the index is very extensive--I refer to it constantly. The book uses many illustrations with clear instructions and explanations. Commands and shortcuts and given for both Mac and Windows. I would definitely purchase another Visual QuickStart Guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
this is a good reference book if you don't need to go to deep into the program.I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS and a few of the things confused me i.e. how the text to path tool works....so I bought this book as a quick reference and it has done a great job of fulfilling that purpose.
5-0 out of 5 stars Visual QuickStart - Illustrator CS
The book has helped me learned or brush up on the application in matter of minutes. It's concise and it saves time when learning new things during crunch time. For more, in-depth, sunject matter, a more advanced book is required. This done does a job well for beginners! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My first choice for a manual replacement
The Visual Quickstart series is, in my opinion, the best replacement for a manual, or for those excuses for a manual that appear in software boxes. The Photoshop Elements book fits that need to a T. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Format, Good Writing, Good Book
I like the format of the Visual QuickStart Guides. Generally speaking, the pages are divided into two columns. The outside column has a headline explaining what the page is about and text to describe how to do it, and perhaps include a bit of explanation or a Tip. The inside column has a screen shot of what the monitor should look like as you do that particular operation. This is combined with an index that directs you to the page based on what you need to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very usefull tool to have in your mac repair kit
I have relied on this book a few times now when repairing the older clamshell style ibooks and also some of the newer G3 and G4 white ibooks. It's got a pretty helpful guide for taking them apart and putting them back together. I have also used this book as a reference tool to determine what configurations various Macs I am selling or working on had when they were first introduced. For example I sold my G4 powermac sawtooth and wanted to know exactly what specifications it had, so I looked in the book and found the 500 mhz powermac G4 (gigabit ethernet) and found it was released in 2000, it also showed the cache, number of memory slots, expansion slots, basic stuff like that for a quick reference. And it covers all models of ibooks and powermacs, imacs, but not all powerbooks unfortunately. It does not have any info on the pismos, lombards or wallstreets powerbooks or any older macs. That would be the only draw-back, I wish it had some information on the G3 powerbooks. It also has chapter tests at the end of each chapter, that are unfortunately pretty basic simple questions. Great big useful book for any mac tech or just plain apple computer users who want a little more info on their computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Apple Hardware Manual
This book is part of the AppleCare training curriculum, designed to be a training manual for people who want to get certified by Apple to be an AppleCare-certified technician. As such, each chapter in the book is a Lesson. Early lessons cover topices such as "General Troubleshooting Theory," and "Safe Working Procedures and General Maintenance."
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything in one Book
Apple makes it very simple. If you are not certified by Apple and you do almost anything inside of an Apple computer and the warranty is void. This is the book that Apple uses in their certification classes for desktop and portable systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Format, Knowledgable Author
The Visual Quickstart Guides from Peachpit Press have an interesting format that I rather like. Each page, or couple of pages, is devoted to a single subject. One of the two columns on the page has the text describing the subject and how to do whatever it is. The other column has a screen shot showing what the screen should look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars User Friendly & Comprehensive
This was my first Apple Training Series book, and it was a very good experience. Going into this I had never learned a software package, let alone a complex one, almost completely from a book, and this experience proved it possible for me. It's no-nonsense, as comprehensive as I would want as a beginner, with very few errors, and user friendly - much more so than the tutorial that came with my software. At times it was very challenging, but that's the complexity of the s/w.Pictorials may not be as colorful as in other books, but this quickly becomes a non-issue as they are more than adequate and offset by the clarity of the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it!
After several attempts at learning FCP, it was this book that did the trick. Each lesson is clear and concise. Not to mention, the book follows a logical progression in what it teaches you.In the end, I recommend this book without any reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch book
I have spent a lot of time checking out books from the library on Final Cut, but often disliked the organization of the books. The manual for FCP certification is great, and teaches you little tips that I haven't seen anywhere else. The author gets right to the work you need to do for editing. The writing style is clear and concise, with no fluff as you'll find in a lot of the training books with the conversational tones. Although I've edited on Final Cut before, I found this book to have something new to learn in each chapter. Another excellent aspect of the book is that it builds upon the knowledge you have learnt in the previous lessons. I wish the author could have spent more time on exporting to web. Still, highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect an iMovie how to
As always, begin at the beginning. If you're looking for an iMovie manual, there are plenty of other authors to choose from. That is NOT what this book is about. Ms Sadun has written a book that borders on heresy. How to take a free program and make a movie that does the types of things only previously available for programs costing hundreds (and thousands) of dollars. What do you need? QuickTime Pro (30 bucks), and Adobe Photoshop Elements (Less than 80 bucks if you shop carefully). Almost any effect you can think of is covered by this book. It really is that good. Granted, doing the same thing with higher end (and much more expensive) video editing software is less complicated and probably takes less time, but the point of the exercize is not always the destination, but the journey (How Zen!). Let's face it, if you're a video professional, you already have the latest from Avid, or Apple, or something like that. If you're editing your son's birthday or a friends wedding, this book is a must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris Seibold MyMac.com Book Review
Say you make a fairly great movie with the worlds greatest program: iMovie. Still, you think your newly birthed video masterpiece lacks something. Perhaps it's a unique blend or a splashy title. At the moment of export you might stop and wonder: "Should I upgrade to Final Cut Pro?" I can answer that question for you, just follow the following formula: (Money you plan to earn from this movie)+(Money you plan to earn with next 10 movies)/(cost of Final Cut Pro)=Justification. If "justification" is greater than 1, I say buy the program. If not it is far wiser, fiscally speaking, to stick with iMovie.4-0 out of 5 stars Step beyond the beginner's guides
This book covers so many useful tricks that every iMovie owner should invest in it. Owning Quicktime Pro is essential for many of the tricks - as is paint program - but it's money well spent. Everything from picture-in-picture effects to professional-style cuts and edits are covered in extremely well illustrated step-by-step guides. Of course there are some very cheesy effects that no-one should use in anything other than an ironic style, but there are also essentials such as J and L edits, better titles, overlays.. This book can help postpone the time you need to step up to Final Cut Pro - so effectively you're saving yourself $ ;-) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for making those fancy DVDs
After several trips to car shows with my husband, I had lots of beautiful photos sitting in iPhoto ready to print.I thought a DVD would be more useful and enjoyable for him, and tried to make a DVD project - NOT!Having already used The Missing Manual books, I promptly went out and bought this one.Great choice, as it filled in the blanks and gave me lots of ideas also.I am a photographer, not a tech person, and am pretty clueless when it comes to creating projects on the computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to working with video on the Mac
I had recently started using a Mac at work, and suddenly I was put in a position to work with video on the Mac. Mr. Pogue's other books had been very helpful to me as I began to learn my way around the Mac, so I thought I would pick up this one to help me with my video work. I was very glad that I did. You see, iMovie HD has tools that help your movie look professional, but the iMovie HD help files are very tedious to go through. There is a great deal of referencing, cross-referencing, and nothing is smoothly laid out. This book is another story, as it is very well laid out with clear instructions and illustrations. It is very long, but since these applications are powerful, it would be expected that any clear explanation of them is going to require some space.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!
Very informative AND entertaining! If you feel you are even the least bit interested in breaking into digital film making this book is fantastic. I have been using iMovie for several years now and have a camcorder. However, I thought this book might help me kick things up a notch. It certainly will. I have only gotten through the first fifty pages, but I've already learned enough justify this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
This is an extremely comprehensive guide to drawing in Mac OS X with Quartz.I was a little disappointed in the lack of Cocoa (with objective-C) ties. You can do anything with Quartz, but sometimes it would take much less time to use the Cocoa equivalents when programming your OS X applications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for beginning Quartz programmers
Quartz 2D is the primary graphics library in Mac OS X and is based on version 1.4 of Adobe PDF. It supercedes QuickDraw, which was used in earlier versions of the Mac OS. In Quartz 2D the coordinate space is an abstract concept defined by real values in 2 dimensions. Points in this space can be connected to form paths, such as straight lines, Bezier curves and so on. To create actual graphics on the display, the paths are rasterized as needed to generate the pixels at the display device's resolution. This permits the same graphics commands to yield the same output on any device using the best resolution available.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as Inside Mac
When I was learning to program the Macintosh in 1990, I turned to the Inside Macintosh series. At the time, you could pick up volumes I-III, read them cover to cover, and know everything you needed to get started programming the Macintosh. Today that's no longer possible for a number of reasons. Apple has discontinued the series, and just provides API references online. Plus any such multi-volume set covering everything you needed to know today would take up most of a bookshelf, rather than a few volumes. I think that's a shame since my favorite part of the books was always the discussion section -- the part that told you WHY you wanted to call various functions in a certain order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the mystery out of pre-press and color correction
Professional Photoshop 5 is out now. Where is it Amazon? If you have not worked extensively in color correction you will need to read this a couple of times to use all the techniques involed, but, you will understand itall. It helps alot if you know Photoshop well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book on CMYK corrections
Though it competes in some ways with my book (Adobe Photoshop 5 How-To, ISBN 1571691561), I think there is a healthy difference of opinion and technique in this book. Certainly a valuable tool in learning to usePhotoshop tools and image theory. One of the few I recommend.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for those workinh in RGB
I purchased this book based on the online reccomendations of others. I wasshocked to learn that the entire focus of the book is on CMYK color and notRGB! (I only work in RGB as do many others.) This was rather misleading tosay the least. I urge those of you who DO work in RGB to pass on this book.It is strictly designed for CMYK. Howard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars above and beyond
When I first picked up a copy of iMovie HD 6 & iDVD 6 by Jeff Carlson, I had specific questions I needed help with. I had used iMovie and iDVD before, having taught myself through experimentation and by referring to the help menus in the programs. When version 6 came out, I had some trouble with iDVD specifically and was unable to find the answers I needed through the help menu.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not happy with the book
I've recently bought this book "Teach Yourself ABAP/4 in 21 days".I am not at all satisfied with book esp. with the sample programs given in the book. The present version available for ABAP is 4.7 where as the author has explained a very old version.I am not able to load the sample programs into my system given in the CD ROM which is supplied with the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly conceptual !!!
This is best book I came across in terms of concepts. For every concept there is a practical example .This is best way to learn instead of reading long boring sentences. This book is meant for beginners and those who already used languages like cobol, java but learning ABAP.However this covers only basics of ABAP in reporting. It doesn't cover dialog programming which is big area. However it is best beginning for someone starting ABAP/SAP career and I highly recommend it.Please note the version is abap 3.0 which is too old (now we have 4.7).However all the examples work in 4.7 so that is not big issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
Within 10 days of following this book diligently i'm able to code in ABAP. I'm sure i'll improve as I go on with this book. This is a very practical book that takes you through the ABAP code step by step. Learning SAP frontend was easy enough but coding in ABAP really needs a good guide, this book is written that way. If your intention is coding in ABAP/4 (which will definitely help you understand SAP more clearly), this book is the best that i have seen in the market. Cheers to the Authors once again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step by step book
Some items in the book may seem very basic but necessary if you want to learn GoLive the right way. For instance when linking - it really is a point and shoot system. I guess once you get the hang of it as the way the book describes the step by step procedure - you'll find similar attributes in MSVisio. This book may seem simple but necessary in its step by step procedure. Each chapter enumerates on each part of the creation of a professional html web page. I recommend this book if you want to learn how to use GoLive the right way, which will in-turn advance you to be more creative with your ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives Up to the Series Title
This is my first venture into the CLIB series and my first venture into serious web designing tools. I needed help fast and I needed a self paced training that would keep me interested. This book comes through on both counts. What's more, it is doing it with style. The only thing missing from the classroom experience is interaction with the teacher.5-0 out of 5 stars Help's You Get Past the GoLive Learning Curve FAST
I am a BIG fan of the Adobe Classroom in a Book (CIB) series.I constantly recommend the books to folks who want to get up to speed on Adobe's software. So ... I come to this review slightly prejudiced. Just wanted to get that out of the way up front.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Approach
The In a Snap books do not presume that you are a Dummy or an Idiot. They presume that you are a smart person, not afraid of computers, but that you need to learn how to use something new, like a piece of software on your computer. Further they assume that you want to get started without having to pour through all the 1500 pages or so in the guru level book. This book takes the Office 2004 software package for the Mac computer and gives it the In a Snap approach.
