5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I really liked this book. It was very informative. Although published by HP Press, the book talks extensively about other Unix platforms as well as NT. The book is probably one year old by now, but I still recommend it. The authors cover almost every hardware option you can think of. A must read for any IT person planning an SAP Implementation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference on SAP Infrastructure
I highly recommend this book to companies that are going to start an SAP project. The book provides the foundation to design and build a solid technical infrastructure for SAP. Moreover, it is easy to read, covers every aspect, and is plenty of examples.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for beginners or experts
I wish that I had this book when we started our SAP project. This book will help anyone who is thinking about installing or upgrading SAP.It helps explain how SAP software will use the hardware. And how all of the pieces fit together.Even though this book is by HP press it stays true to the theme. They do try and "sell" HP hardware or solutions every once in awhile, but for the most part this book is generic in vendor. You won't go wrong with reading this book or just having it for reference the next time you have to upgrade your hardware or if you are having response problems and need to know how to evaluate your hardware. We have been an SAP customer for six years and have grown up with SAP in the US (started at version 2.1 and have just completed our 4.6 upgrade!). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
I'm an electronic engineer and I view programming as a peripheral skill necesssary to get the job done. This normally involves knowing what you want the program to do and researching existing literature till you find how to make it happen. Graphical Applications with TCL/TK made the job of creating custom GUI's relatively easy. The book is well written with working code modules for generating various widgets. The later chapters tie these modules together into standalone working programs. The CD has a contributions directory with programs from different authors that was helpful. It would have been nicer to have a few more Windows based contributions but I believe that is a symptom of TCL's UNIX ancestry. I've read some other TCL/TK programming books that were a waste of time, don't bother this is the tool you need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the 2nd step
This is definitely an excellent book for the beginner or even "advanced" beginner. After reading Ousterhout this book helps to find out about various ways to use Tcl in a more practical manner. Section-1 introduces into all the basic stuff that people usually want to use Tcl for. Section-2 gives good hints on how to write more complex applications. The last chapters though are getting somewhat superficial. But that is when you already became a more sophisticated programmer and need more sophisticated books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to TCL/Tk programming
Simple and numerous examples demonstrate the many tcl/tk commands, presented for both unix and windows.Very good for reading and doing cover to cover The emphasis is on graphical layout, which I have found to usuallybe the most difficult part to quickly become proficient at.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Layout...??
This book, as well an several other Peach Pit Press books, did a great job of immediately losing my interest. The layout doesn't seem to flow from one section to the next.It seems like the author thought of a new topic at random, and dumped that information in the book with no consideration for logical order. In general, it seems that most of the Peach Pit Press books that I've read follow this "shuffling of information" approach.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
This book is not for beginners. Very confusing and poorly written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Concise
OK you're still using PS7 and want to get up to speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
One of the best books around. You'll get more than your money's worth!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK...Cool - but???
I am about done with all of the examples in this book...and...Yeah it's definitely a mixed bag on this one! Overall, this is a good book for coders wanting to move from basic AS (gotoAndPlay(etc..);) - to "real" coding (streaming MP3's with volume and balance controls). But...man is this book inconsistent! For one example the author will have you place the code for a function for a button on the first frame of the main timeline - where it should be "per Mr. Moock" - then in the next example he'll tell you to place a function directly on a button itself. Huh? And speaking of the MP3 player - why do you need to write a fully "OOP-compliant" volume control when nothing else in the book even metions OOP? I replaced 5 lines of code for that little sucker with 1 line of code.1-0 out of 5 stars I agree with the 1-star reviewers
Read their reviews. I skipped ahead and wanted to learn "Chapter 6: Managing Outside Communication", and I found details left out in the two examples that I looked at but now I'm skeptical about the rest of the book. I bought this book hoping to learn some advanced features but in the end, I'm returning it. Not surprisingly, I see a lot of other people selling their edition which tells you that something's wrong. ... Read more

This book was given to me by my director, and so at first glance, I thought this book would put me to sleep.2-0 out of 5 stars Book for SAP Version 4.0; needs updating
Bought the book in March 2002 and much to my surprise, this book deals with R/3 Version 4.0. Given the CATT tool and workbench went through a major overhaul in versions 4.5 and 4.6 (including the addition of a new, simplified transaction), this should be recognized. 5-0 out of 5 stars "You'll be up & running in no-time" (seriously)
Very good resource for learning the ins-&-outs of Photoshop. Nothing in the book was a "serious waste of time", which I find in a lot of books. You'll pick-up a great deal, but still there's even more to learn. Displacement maps & all those other tidbits are left out, but thats why Colin Smith, Kelby, Monroe, & other gurus, come out with the books they do. 2-0 out of 5 stars NOT !! for beginners
I just got this book and have been trying to read for the last few days. It's dry as toast, and goes into very little detail on how things are done.It will start a new subject and not even gin an explanation as to what it is. Magic wand;, just tell you how to use it, not what it's used for, no examples of what an image looks like before you use it, with another one after so one can see the difference. This is the first review I wrote, but I just had to get the word out.If you're a beginner you need something else, so my quest goes on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book Level: Intermediate!
It is the first Photoshop book that I bought. It confused me a lot. There is no learning guide in this book. After I read a true beginner level book, I found it quite useful as a "How-To" book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's disappointing when a photo of a loved one is marred by "red eye" or the wrong exposure, or when a cherished picture from long ago cracks and fades. Luckily, Katrin Eismann seems to know every trick available in Photoshop for making photographs--film or digital--look just how you want them to, whether that means restoring what has been lost, fixing incorrect exposures, erasing dust and scratches, or even recreating reality. (Who wouldn't want to lose a few wrinkles?) Eismann has the artistic eye to appreciate good photography, the technical savvy to be able to offer numerous solutions to any given problem, and the writing and teaching skills to walk readers clearly through these solutions.Read more

I've been thru this book, was not able to put it down. After going throught the tutorials and reading through the chapters I feel very confident that I will be able to really bring poor pictures back to justice.Katrin really knows how to explain the subject along with showing very good examples of work done, this is a must have for anyone wanting to step their feet into photo restoration and retouching, and not just switching a monkey head for a real one.I have actually read through this book twice since I've had it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Already worth the price
I just cracked open this book five minutes ago. I'm new to the world of SAP and the aggravation the book has spared me has been well worth the price. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not for general SAP - System Administration only
In some places that the book is advertised it is misleading- touting the book as SAP for dummies when actually it is a book on SAP System Administration only.Although it may adequately cover the SystemAdministration (Basis) aspects the book is not helpful for basic SAPfunctionality - I had more luck with "Teach Yourself SAP in 24hours" for general SAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Start for a Tough subject
I didn't think it was possible to have a Dummies book for SAP, but it seems that Joey and Jim did it.As an experienced basis admin I read with skepticism, but I truly believe this is a valuable asset for any technicalresource looking to venture into the vast world of SAP.Joey providescomical yet expert commentary that would allow anyone new to this difficultlandscape to get a leg up.Thanks for the enjoyable and educational read. 1-0 out of 5 stars not for a beginner
i bought this book as a recommended text for a beginner's course on photoshop.the first time i cracked it open, i was trying to get a jump on my 2nd or 3rd class, and i was reviewing "how to draw a path using the pen tool."the instructions in the book were so thoroughly useless to me, they may as well have been written in mandarin chinese.in fact, i only figured it out after i put the book away and just went at via trial and error.you would think the authors really would have made considerable effort to explicitly cover such a central topic, but they only devote 1/2 a page of text and 1/2 a page of diagrams (which don't completely correspond to the text, i might add) to it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great value!
In 534 pages, Weinmann & Lourekas cover the basics of Photoshop CS 8.0, as well as the more intricate details. The guide is divided into 25 chapters, each of which focuses on a different topic. The authors start with a few introductory chapters for Photoshop newbies, and gradually get into the real nitty-gritty that is Photoshop CS.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reads too much like textbook but still pretty good
This book isn't the "best" book for beginners but a great supplementary book or a pretty good semi-beginners book if you had the chance to play with photoshop or have some basis of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I bought this book along with the basics version because I am new to using Flash and web design in general. I know when first learned programs with the help of books like this it sometimes feels as though they are talking about a completely different program because you can get so confused, however, with this book I am pretty sure they actually have written about a different version of the program. I definately have version MX 2004, which is definately what it says on the cover of this book, yet even when I copy their code exactly letter for letter, space for space, it will not produce the outcome they describe. For example the book repeatedly states to, "select the first frame of the root timeline, and open the actions panel," and from there it will instruct you to apply actions to a frame. Unfortunately in MX 2004 in no situation are you ever able to apply any action to a frame, actions are only usable for movie and button instances.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
If you have some programming knowledge already, this book is a good way to learn how to apply your knowledge in the Flash environment. It has a good index and hundreds of pages of useful features explained so you may get on with whatever you are trying to create. I have found it so useful for user interface prototyping that I take it back and forth to/from the office whenever I am building prototypes.

1-0 out of 5 stars UN UNH!
NO!Go to jail, do not pass go!
1-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next one
This book is merely a text copy of the information that ships with the training DVD you get when you buy Aperture. In other words, you already have all this information if you own the program. The only value to this book is as a companion to the DVD or if you don't own the program and want to see what it can do. I'd wait for the next title in the series if you want some real training.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book!
This slim volume is mostly white space and very large type. None of the information in this little booklet is particularly helpful nor illuminating and it should have all been included with the application anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
I'm not ready yet to publish a review but, i may tell you something. This is a Nice book. Seam to be a little outdated because Shake is now 4.0.Shake is a powerfull software and it's a bit hard to learn by ourself. This book will help you but it's not easy to learn that kind of software from a book, a video training will do a better job. Anyway, this book is a good starting point.

2-0 out of 5 stars I guess I'm spoiled...
after using the "Creating Motion Graphics" books by the Meyers for After Effects. They know how to teach! I'm preparing for a job on a big budget animation feature that will use Shake for compositing, hoping to move from the world of Motion Graphics to high-end compositing...W-e-l-l, this book didn't teach me much at all in terms of concepts or the art of compositing. I "hear" Marco is a nice guy and an accomplished compositor, which makes the book all the more disappointing. I'm not saying I didn't learn anything, but "now click here, now click there...and now add this value"...ain't that cool!?" is NOT truly teaching me anything. The new "Studio Techniques" book forcompositing in After Effects is excellent. I wish there was a comparable book for Shake. This ain't it...and unfortunately there aren't any alternatives. I strongly recommend reading Ron Brinkman's book, The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" BEFORE diving into Marco's Shake book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Worth It
This book by far is worth every penny. Why? It includes a disc with a 30 day trial for Shake! The software costs so much that many people can't afford it. What if you want to learn Shake, but not buy Shake? Buy this book then... The chapters are easy to follow. The screenshots are helpful as well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
This book is worded for those who already have some experience with quarkxpress. It has a lot of information but when you are just starting you also need practical exercises to get a full understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, cool program/software
This is a good book to learn QuarkXpress. Keyboard shortcuts are a big must and there in there. It's easy to follow; I finished it in 3-4 days. It's not as fun as Photoshop, but after reading this book QuarkXpress is a cool program once you put it to use. It cover's all the topics well, however I do feel there needs to be more information on the trapping capabilities of Quark, other than that its gold. Its helpful to have access to the software as you read, so you can practice and make that sucker sing! ;)

1-0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't recommend it for first time users
I took an online course which required this book. It was a frustrating experience. There were times when I attempted the instructions and couldn't achieve the results. Rather than buying this, I seriously recommend taking an in class course or perhaps a Quark for Dummies book. Perhaps a little more experience will make this book easier to follow. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book, but I wouldn't know
Got the book a while back from a non-amazon seller (but through the Amazon website). Communication between the seller and me was less than phenomenal, in that one day, the book just 'showed up'. Not a bad thing, but as a tracking-fiend, it was dissappointing not to have it tracked well. Book wasn't in flawless condition, it looked like someone had kindof slid it around a desk a lot (perhaps an artifact of their packing/shipping process), but was otherwise exactly as ordered. As for the content, well, I couldn't tell you - haven't had a chance to read it yet. Sorry 'bout that.

2-0 out of 5 stars Error-ridden and too little actual teaching
Not recommended, although some people like it a lot. More errors in the text than others, making you go to the web for errata pages.Relies too much on just presenting source code for the reader to type in, without adequate explanation of what the code does and why it's structured the way it is.Less of a gentle introduction than Hillegass's book "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X", less comprehensive than Anguish's book "Cocoa Programming".

2-0 out of 5 stars Try a different book first.
This book has potential, but in general I am pretty dissatisfied.Read more
