Editorial Review

You may not have paused (a pun!) to think about it, but we're living in the golden age of home movies. Forget dad's old Super-8 films and the stinky celluloid in grandma's basement: A reasonably priced digital video camera and a Macintosh computer give you the ability to not only record moving images, but modify and assemble them in order to tell stories more effectively than ever. David Pogue, Mac maven, shows you how to make movies using iMovie and iDVD, the video editing and burning software that ship with all modern iMacs. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Revealed Secrets of David Pogue's iMovie 4 & iDVD
I was fortunate to attend Macworld in July 2004 in Boston and attend the Mac User conference. Dave Pogue was the seminar leader for the iMovie 4 module.
5-0 out of 5 stars Video editing techniques for use on the Macintosh
iMovie 4 & iDVD: The Missing Manual is a solid primer and resource especially focusing on step-by-step video editing techniques for use on the Macintosh. Chapters address forming seamless transitions and effects, the ins and outs of QuickTime Pro, iDVD secreets, and much more. An absolute "must-have" for getting the most out of iMovie 4 and iDVD software, highly recommended for amateur and professional moviemakers and movie editors working on the Macintosh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Goes beyond iMovie and iDVD
I've been a fan of iMovie from the first release on Mac OS 9.It made taking home movies fun.The great thing about this book is it goes beyond just a how-to or tips and tricks.A lot of the book is devoted to the dos and don'ts of creating home movies in general.Just as with still photography, the hard work is when your taking the shot, not afterward. The better your movie is at filming, the less work you'll have to do when you get it into iMovie.

Editorial Review

This tremendous volume, penned by enterprise resource planning (ERP) consultant Stewart S. Miller, tracks nearly all the elements involved in preparing for, taking, and passing SAP's battery of available certification courses. In addition to offering content and context for the course and exams, Miller has taken the time to include information about the body that administers the tests--the SAP Partner Academy--course and exam pricing, and relevant contact information.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless Material for the Garbage
I am a certified Consultant with 5 years of experience in the field of SAP and I must say that this book is the most worthless material I have ever seen. And one word to the SAP contacts at the SAP Department, who are supposed to help you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not so sure
I really should not be rating this title because I never read it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Give up this book for SAP certification
Perhaps I paid too much expectation on this book. I thought it will give you a lot of simulated questions to simulate SAP certificate exam, but it turns out only to give you a brief explaination about SAP NOT for CERTIFICATION.I am very disappointed for this book.Besides, the answer for each question is far from the reality. That is to say, in the SAP certificate exam, NO ONE IS GOING TO WRITE 3 OR 4 LINES OF ENGLISH SENTENCES TO ANSWER EVEN A SIMPLE QUESTION. FOR WHAT? As most of people who are interested in SAP certificate exam know that SAP certificate exam have most questions in multiple choices. The SAP certificate exam is to test people's professional knowledge NOT to test the level of English writting. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars complete disappointment
It seems that the author does not understand what someone getting this book would want. To begin editing. I am not a rank amateur, but this book made me feel like one. The process of actually beginning did not start until chapter five - (page 159) and even then you don't really have a clue what's going on. Finally in Chapter 9 (page 281) you start Basic Editing. It was too complicated, but my thought was to start with Chapter 9 and then go back and put together what I might need to know. I found this book to be a disaster. Swimming through a lot of information I would only need if I were editing Star Wars X, instead of trying to organize a documentary with six hours of interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great great complete readible and easy to understand book. It's become my BIBLE along with the FCP manuals..but it's condensed all into one book where as FCP has five. This is good for the beginner as well as the advanced user.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to Final Cut Pro
I think that J. Ewing, who wrote the negative review, is on crack (metaphorically J.Ewing, not literally, chill - don't try to sue me for slander.Geez, you need to relax J. Ewing, you need to relax). This book is a definitive guide to Final Cut Pro 4 just as all of Lisa Brenneis' previous version have been for previous versions of FCP.Check out the rest of the amazing reviews for this book. Then, if you too are on crack, listen to J. Ewing. If not, buy this readable, helpful, insightful, and concise guide to FCP 4. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars My adventures with Dreamweaver
J. Tarin Tower's book, "Dreamweaver for Windows and Macintosh" is a good book, as far as it goes; but there is nothing (as far as I can find) about Timelines, which are important if you're going to create any kind of song and dance on your website. It has been helpful to me in the self-taught business of learning Dreamweaver. While it is very polished and well organized, with step by step instructions on how to implement the many features of the program, it is weak in terms of the big picture, how and why various sub-routines can be used to solve a design problem and achieve a particular effect. I'd say it's the best book in its field, mainly because there isn't anything else out there - yet, as far as I know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Top notch teaching manual
Listen Software Solutions: The book is perfect for teaching: 1. It has two to three visual screen shots for each page 2. Step by Step instruction lead the student through the concept 3. Notes and definitions to provide clarity and help tie concepts together. 3-0 out of 5 stars This book is good but it left some important steps out.
I am new to dreamweaver and this book has quickly helped me become productive BUT it has a few problems.Read more

Editorial Review

This 867-page book is an exhaustive guide to Photoshop--one of the biggestwe've seen--and focuses on the many new features and changes in Photoshop 4.0 forWindows and Macintosh. The authors write about creating Web backgrounds andgraphics, creating animations, and integrating illustrations and 3D graphics from otherpackages. You also get in-depth instruction on creating interesting type effects, usingplug-ins, and creating composite works from various photographs. There are just a fewfull-color pages, which show final images along with explanations of the techniques. ACD includes practice files, a glossary, a resource guide, utilities, images, textures, andfonts. 5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably comprehensive and thorough
I bought this book after searching through dozens of Adobe Photoshop 4.0 titles. This particular book is an incredible compendium that really turns the novice Photoshop user into a pro. Each chapter covers a different Photoshop task, making it easy for the reader to personalize the tutorialto his/her needs. And each little mini-tutorial is incredibly thorough, with dozens of examples and lots of step-by-step exercises that make eachprocedure second-nature.After only a few days, I moved from Photoshopignoramus to website developer! 5-0 out of 5 stars I can't thank the Boutons enough
I have been using books written by Gary Bouton and his wife Barbara for awhile now. I'm looking back at this particular book as a milestone in my Photoshop education. I took this book, and for a month I slowly read,re-read, underlined and executed the lessons until I truely understood whatI was doing. By re-reading and trying the lessons I was able to overcomethe stubborn paradigms I created which normally keep me from understandingwhat is being said.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the BEST for beginners AND advanced users!
Gary David Bouton writes in the most logical, effective manner I have ever seen in this type book. This is a COMPREHENSIVE guide to Photoshop 4. It is a large book, filled with hands on tutorials (not to mention two CDs packedwith lessons and extras) that begin with the very basics, build onthem...and take you well into advanced techniques. At no time are you lefthanging... every step in each technique is not only covered, but the logicbehind it is explained. This book is written so skillfully that bothbeginners and Photoshop veterans will find Mr. Bouton's explanations andcomments fascinating and invaluable. You will pick up REAL SKILL and alasting foundation in Photoshop from this book... not to mention hundredsof cool effects to show off with! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars From knowing nothing to creating good layout
My only layout experience prior to getting inDesign was MS Publisher. This book got me up and running and quickly understanding this significantly more advanced software. I found most of the videos not very relevant, except for one or two chapters where the video covered a topic more thoroughly than the book did (example: pencil tool). Even though I would recommend this book to someone learning inDesign CS2, I have two negative comments I'd mention to them first:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning resource
My only complaint - and it's very small - is the author's assumption that a certain set of fonts is "always" installed with InDesign. Apparently, that "always" doesn't necessarily apply if you happen to purchase the educational version. While that's fine for now - I don't necessarily need huge piles of additional fonts - it makes the lessons a bit frustrating because they tend to rely on the fonts. For example, in teaching kerning and tracking, the author assumes that you've opened a file set in a particular font, which will yield very specific results on-screen - which you'll have some difficulty reproducing if you don't happen to have those fonts installed.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful tutorial and reference
If you want to quickly get up to speed with Adobe InDesign, look no further! The introductory video segues with the lessons seamlessly. The lessons themselves are thorough, and each step is clearly presented, making it simple for a new user to follow.

I'm a long time Mac user and have been using iPhoto since it came out. This book really hits every aspect of the program, and tells not only what's there, but how and why to use it. Examples are concise and relevant. This book is a good book for an advanced iPhoto user, and a must have for the beginner. Apple should include a copy of this book with every Mac.

It's arguable whether or not a picture is, indeed, worth a thousand words. It's not arguable that pictures AND a thousand words are the most effective means to communicate the features and methods of any particular software application, especially an application like Adobe's GoLive 6 which excels at filling your screen real estate with windows and palettes.5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to learn Golive 6!

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustratingly verbose
Chambers seems to cover the required material for Mac OS 10.3 OK, but he could have said it in less than half of the 692 pages if he kept his all-to-frequent attempts to be entertaining out of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best on the shelf
As a former PC owner who switched, I think I would have popped a gasket if I had not picked up this great book. It answered questions with answers I could not find in the Help file and a copy of the Mac OS X Missing Manual, and over a really wide area, taking in iMovie, connecting to PC networks, limiting the stuff my friends could do on their accounts, printing things in iPhoto, setting up my Mac to turn on and off all by itself and how to burn songs with iTunes. People tell you that Macs are easy to set up but anyone who has suffered with iDisk will argue with them; this book solved my problems and got things running!! 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
This is the best InDesign book out! Sandee knows this program inside and out! She explains it clearly, quick and concise! I recommend this to every desinger I know. I have a copy at work, and keep a copy for home use too!
5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive, comprehensive, and easy to navigate and reference,
I've only bought a few computer manuals in my life [and never ended doing much with them but setting them on a shelf] before this, so perhaps I am not the best person to review one.Furthermore, I have never used a desktop publisher program of any kind (beyond WORD) before picking this book up - so I am about as clueless going into this as I can be. But, I had to learn In Design (along with Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat) fast. A design instructor recommended this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Organized for Users
With several InDesign texts close at hand, this is the one I find myself reaching for first. Cohen has an approachable style and the material is logically organized. The linkage of virtually every section of text to one or more illustrations gives the reader "two kicks at every can." Her VQG for CS2 InDesign will be my first purchase after upgrading. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money.
Photoshop Elements 2.0 includes a 254 page manual. This visual quickstart guide is nothing more than a rewrite of the Adobe manual with the addition of scores of low contrast black and white illustrations. It is very well written and is laid out better than the Adobe manual but it offers little that is not already in the Adobe book. If you want a reference manual you don't need this quickstart guide because the Adobe manual is quite satisfactory and comes with the program. If you're looking for a tutorial this quickstart guide is useless. Good tutorials are the books by Scott Kelby, Jan Kabili, and Shane Rebenschied

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
I have had limited experience with improving digitial photographs. I was looking for a book to help explain Photoshop Elements 2.I had skimmed through the manual.I saw none on Amazon that had multiple wonderful reviews so I picked up a copy of this book. It was all I had hoped for.It was clear with step by step illustrations on what to do. I am a Mac user but it has Windows instructions equally as well. I read through most of it in 2 sittings while trying some of the steps on my laptop. On the first day I was able to make images that appeared too dark come alive using the histograms which are so easy to use when clearly explained.I could use the clone tool and easily remove a pillow on the back of a chair while it looked totally natural as if the pillow was never there and the lines of the chair were totally normal.Icould remove a light over my son's head that looked as if he were wearing it as a hat and otherwise ruined a wonderful image. It taught me so much more.I have not yet gotten into layers but the explainations appear very clear. I hired someone to make a picture video for a presentation but now see how easy it would be for me to do and have anyone see a copy of it with acrobat reader. If you don't kow how to use Photoshop Elements 2, get this book. You will not be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the person needing process knowledge of FI or CO
I have ordered/read 6 books on the FI and CO modules in the last two weeks. My experience is that this book is the most detailed and beneficial of all.For someone who is looking to understand the process side of these SAP modules I would strongly recommend this book.If you are looking to learn more about the config, BUY A CONFIG book, not this one.The negative reviews seem to be related to the fact that people don't understand what this book is trying to accomplish (process understanding). If you have a medium understanding of SAP R/3 and a limited to medium knowledge base of accounting (internal and external) concepts, this book is a winner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless material
FI/CO is most popular and CO is the key module. In this book, nothing is helpful. I am very disappointed. I do not understand what purpose for the author to publish this book. Perhaps the author is very experienced, but the book is really useless in this field.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book
I found this 500-page book completely useless. The book doesn't have any (!) illustrations, it's plain text only, and it basically rephrases standard SAP OnLine Help.I found the standard SAP FI/CO Online Help morereadable than this book ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Macromedia Flash MX for Windows and Macintosh (Visual QuickStart Guide) by Katherine Ulrich
This book is very big on details and I feel I'm learning more about Flash than other books I've used.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic information, poor organization, useless index
This book is a descent resource of basic information; that is, if you can find it. That's the most frustrating thing about this book is that it suffers from poor organization and a horrible index that follows it's own inexplicable logic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still a good book for me
I agree with many of the otehr reviewers out there: there's no real cookbook for BW, and this one complicates matters by trying to cover two versions at once. But for me, it's proven to be a great book because it doesn't assume I'm an expert. As a new member of an existing BW Support team, I don't have to ask as many "stupid" questions now that I has this. And I got a great price on a used copy!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Outdated
The book is outdated and based on BW 1.2B.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent overview, but confusing and not focused
Overall this is a decent introduction to SAP Business Warehouse. However, one of the biggest flaws of the book is that trys to overview two different versions. It would be much better if it simply stuck with reviewing against one version of SAP BW (preferably the most recent). It makes some of the concepts and movement through the BW interface very confusing because of the way it switchs back and forth between the two versions. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great but not if you upgraded from book 1 to book 2
The original book, which dealt with Keynote 1, was very helpful. I hoped this one would add or expand, since the author had a chance to improve on the original just as Apple had when they went up a version. No luck. I wasted my money. However, if you're buying this one and don't have a previous edition it should be great. Don't forget that Apple's Keynote version 3 is now out so you can expect another book soon, maybe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program!!
I am involved in doing around 100 Keynote Presentations a year! I am certified through Microsoft for PowerPoint. I find Keynote far superior to PowerPoint. Tom has done a magnificant job writing this book! If you are looking for a simple no nonesense book to learn Keynote look no further. I have used a lot of computer learning books this is the best!I recommend this one to everyone. The chapter creating custom themes is worth the price of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars short task descriptions
The book follows in the footsteps of the other QuickStart books. Fireworks is a nice graphics drawing package. This functionality lends itself easily to a QuickStart approach. The inherent visual nature of Fireworks means that every page can have graphics demonstrating some aspect. (Don't try this with an algorithms book.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
Dear Amazon,1-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you already know what you're doing
If you have already been using software to produce graphics then this book is for you.It would be a very useful reference to someone who knows what they want to do, but just doesn't know how to do it in Fireworks.Read more
