4-0 out of 5 stars Take Control of Apple Mail
Review: "Take Control of Apple Mail" by Joe Kissell
4-0 out of 5 stars Take Control of Apple Mail
This is the book that I needed when I first set up Mail. It would have saved me lots of frustration with my trial and ERROR method. I would recommend that anyone who is just starting out with Mail read this book FIRST.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extensive discussion of spam filters
Email was the first killer application of the Internet, predating the Web and its browsers by over a decade. And here, for those of you on Macs, is Apple's latest front end to email usage. Kissell goes into how to use the client side GUI. As you might expect, Apple offers a clear and attractive design. Made as intuitive as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Mac owners need their own digital photography book.
On first glance, you might wonder why there is a special book on digital photography for Macintosh owners. After all, the camera doesn't know what kind of computer you use, and the key software tools for post processing, such as Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are available for both Mac and Windows platforms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and fun guide for the beginner
Mac Digital Photography is written in a fun and friendly, yet professional manner. You will learn a variety of techniques in many short examples. I hesitate to call them tutorials, because most of these examples are essentially a short number of steps that are between 1 and a few sentences in length. There are also many bulleted lists that contain useful definitions and explainations. 5-0 out of 5 stars MAC and digital cameras come together
The very first paragraphs in MAC Digital Photography give very good advice - get close to your subject!Ah yes, what many photographers fail to do.They want everything in the picture when what you really want is to focus on your subject.Remember to use the Rule of Thirds and your photos will capture exactly what you want to see in them.Remember, too, to make your backgrounds simple and uncluttered.Don't distract the viewer with images unrelated to what you want them to see.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixture of an editor's personal experience and FCP bits
Michael Wohl has written a book. This book is an exercise of self-publicity and little else. It is a very messy conglomerate of his experience as an editor, director and Final Cut Pro user but not a rigorous or well written book about any of the themes he intends to cover. The coverage of Final Cut Pro is poor and simplistic. (There is nothing here that you cannot learn in the manuals or in a few hours exposed to the software). His comments and examples about his experience as an editor are pretty simplistic and do not inspire or entertain, and most of all don't teach a lot about the craft of editing. He also keeps refering to a movie he directed to give examples of typical situations encountered by editors but, this feels utterly incomplete without the inclusion of a sample of his movie on CD ROM or DVD. You can make comments about a movie and learn from it only if it is available to you. To summarise, this is a very dissapointing book which will not satisfy any of the areas it intends to talk about. Its only redeeming feature are the interviews with famous editors, but apart from that, this book is intended to absolte beginners with no experience whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Every FCP user should have it.
When I got this book I openned the first few pages andkept going on. It seems to me that anyone who helped create a program will certainly know how it works or that's what we think. Micheal is and editor with many years of experience and he shows you the different ways you can use FCP. Don't buy this for problem solving to FCP, buy it as a good reference bookwhen you need to learn different ways to edit. It's like a good cook book , you can always pick it off the shelf and look for something new to cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Editing with FCP for non-beginners
This book is not for someone looking to learn the basics of Final Cut Pro, the manual and other books are better at that, but this book is a MUST for anyone looking to learn about editing and are going to be doing it in FCP.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hey! The CD had nutin on it! What a Rip!
The book had a lot of fluff in it that is already covered in a bunch of other books.I was hoping that the CD would have some good templates so I didn't have to re-invent the wheel...thats the main thing that attracted me to the book. But the CD contained a single boring power point presentation on a rather mundane aspect of SAP.I feel like I got a bit ripped off, considering that the cover states that there's all this great stuff.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent SAP project handbook
I have been managing several SAP projects over the last few years and this is the first book in my opinion that really covers the unique and often intagible project issues during an R/3 implementation.Mr. Ghosh is obviously well initiated in R/3 projects and provides valuable insight in managing a R/3 project as well as insight into general issues and hurdles that accompany any ERP implementation. This book was written for project managers and implementation team members alike.I would highly recommend this book to anyone from project team members to skilled project managers.Mr. Ghosh presents the material in an easy to understand format while still providing depth and significant meat to each chapter.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Companion to iMovie3
As Erica says "iMovie can do a lot more than you might ever expect from a free product" Having spent a lifetimeediting film and then video by the traditional methods I found computer editing with iMovie both a revelation and a revolution. You can use it as an easy way to put together family and holiday videos but as this book shows it has hidden power to allow you to make high quality productions.4-0 out of 5 stars More of the same...and that's a good thing!
In iMovie 2 Solutions, Erica Sadun gave us cool tricks with low (or no) cost additions to iMovie 2. Now iMovie 3 is out and the tips from the iMovie 2 book are....still working. Some of the same tricks show up in this new book, but that is expected with a program like iMovie. As I said about iMovie 2 Solutions, if you're looking for a basic iMovie how-to book, look elsewhere. That's not what this book is for. This book is going to show you how to use iMovie 3 and a few mostly inexpensive pieces of software to do the kinds of tricks that you would spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for high end DV movie editing software packages. The high end software might do it easier and maybe faster, but the learning curve, not to mention the cost, is so much higher. The new tricks are well worth the cost of this book. Ms Sadun writes very well. Clear and consise without talking down to her intended audience. All the tricks are laid out step by step, with examples shown not only in the book, but also on the very useful companion DVD. The software included on the DVD is also a nice bonus. If you're really brave, you can make your own iMovie plugins! Many very useful plugins are included to get you started, but this will whet your appitite for the huge assortment of practical (and some not so practical, but fun) world of iMovie plugins. Hit the search engine of your choice and type in "iMovie Plugins". OK, what software will you need to do these tricks? A graphics program like Adobe Photoshop Elements for less than 80 bucks (although you could also use any decent graphics program), and Apple's very own QuickTime Pro (the free regular QuickTime will not do) for [a few] measly bucks. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to go beyond iMovie's feature set without spending a fortune. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuff I'd never have figured out on my own...
Having been a PC person all my life, I had absolutely no experience with the Macintosh until I purchased an ibook. This book was beyond helpful in teaching me what I needed to know! Not only is David Pogue full of helpful information, he's hysterical to read.I never thought I'd laugh while reading a computer manual, that's for sure. The book held my hand and walked me through setups, included software, troubleshooting, finding accessories, and ridding my hard drive of unnecessary programs to free up disk space.I'd give it an A+. ... A case oriented approach will be more effective.

1-0 out of 5 stars Roundabout
Readers with basic exposure to image processing programs may benefit by first looking at books in the Visual Quickstart series for Photoshop before considering this book. The Quickstart book I have is more concise and easier to reference questions towards. While this book's descriptions ofsome features is good there are problems with getting to the point whichcan be a hassle.I did not find the C-D of use so why do I need to pay forit? This book is almost 3 times as expensive and about 3 times heavierthan the Quickstart manual. They both cover the same material so I thinkthis is not the best deal or the best written....

5-0 out of 5 stars THanks, this book is so good

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT designer friendly!
I'm a graphic design student that is delving into the complex world of motion graphics, and I thought this book was convoluted and overly detailed.I fully acknowledge that I'm a beginner and tend to be more creative than technical, but I felt that perhaps the book could have been written with readers like myself in mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book; be prepared to work at this great program
This is a wonderful book for serious users of QuarkXPress, which is the best and most broadly-used professional DTP program on the market (recent improvements to InDesign notwithstanding). If you're looking for a quickstart guide to build your church newsletter, buy one. If you're a serious professional who wants to understand how to really use Quark in the real world (and it's a worthwhile investment, believe me), buy Blatner's book. Period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blatner's Done It Again
David Blatner is an excellent writer and continues to explore the new depths of QuarkXPress 5 with his "real world" approach, incorporating a welcome mix of humor in what could otherwise be a dry subject: desktop publishing. As a college level graphic art technology instructor, I've used Real World QuarkXPress 5 as a text book. The students have learned to give QuarkXPress the respect it deserves for the position the application has earned in the industry. Real World QuarkXPress 5 has the depth necessary to cover the new features in the program. I use the book in my own business as a handy resource. I recommend this book hands down against other books currently available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too long and full of useless info

4-0 out of 5 stars Good on implementating, Introduction on system
It is a good book for the neophyte or someone who is considering implementing or in the beginning stages of an implementation. Actually, it is a terrific choice if you fall in this group.4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the post-Dotcom times!!
Although SAP is out of spotlight since lat year, everone knows there are lots of SAP projects out there, both new, upgrades etc.; without refering to any particular SAP project, this book distills a lot of practical details and wisdom from numerous SAP projects. It should be useful not only to key-users, consultants and, of-course, Project Managers but also for anyone presently evaluating ERPs vis-a-vis e-commerce, CRM projects etc. Now that the hype has gone out of ERPs, Kale's book will put ERPs in perspectives vis-a-vis other areas & dev. in IT/ IS like the latest CRM, SCM, Enterprise Portals, NetMarkets etc. Read this book to understand why ERP will continue to be the essential backbone for all businesses. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of New Ideas for the ENTERPRISE
Information as a Resource for the Enterprise!Much surprise is being expressed at the current spurt in productivity indicated by the booming US economy. Its no paradox. As per the author, this is because the latest enterprise systems like SAP enable leading companies in theeconomy to use information as a tangible resource. And, this resource isusable many times over, simultaneously; that is where the productivity iscoming from!Read more

Good one! This book guides you step by step on everything (Modeling, Layout, Rendering and many more). At first I thought that Lightwave was very complex but when I finish the book I found out that it's simple, very easy to work and you can do amazing things in no time. This book also serves as a reference resource once you're working with the software.I highly recommend this book to beginner-intermediate users. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible!
This book contains all of the otherwise unwritten techniques for producing QuickTime movies and panoramas for the web, appropriate for both Macintosh and Windows users.5-0 out of 5 stars A book by a QuickTime expert
I like a lot Mr.Gulie's writing and especially the chapter about SMIL and how it can be used to create QuickTime movies.5-0 out of 5 stars What do you need? It's in this book!
This book is excellent. Not only is it fun to read but also very informative. You can read it from front to back and you can use it as a reference manual. What graphics mode for tracks does what? You'll find it! What compression scheme do I need for what purpose? You'll find it! How do I change the movie controller? Why do I have to change it sometimes? Just look it up! Did you ever wanted to know how the people from Apple make movie trailers?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Tool!
While iChat is pretty easy to use, and eventually, the reader will hit upon most the author talks about, I did find very useful information that I had not considered. For example, to change my preferences so that I do not have to see the buddy list but can still be contacted. The author also references some web sites for some additional things that can be done with iChat-and I appreciated the pages. I am using some of the icons from one of those pages. As stated before most of the inofmation will be hit upon eventually, but why not have it all at one time? ... Read more
