A very useful book!
As a student, I often go to college to use computers. Most of computers are Apple computers. Because I was new to MAC OS. I have to look around to find a good book. After I found this book and there is also big discount from couponsky.com, I decide to buy it. After using the book for 6 months, I found it is very helpful. It is a user-level book. It tells me every features and application in MAC OS based computer. I recommend this book to students like me.

Pogue's in vogue but aint informed
I bought this book to help me switch from Winduhs. It's a lotta words and I later read in his New York Times column that he "types" by dictation into .. I think Dragon Naturally Speaking on a Winduhs based machine (uh hu). The book's contents could have been cut down to less than a hundred pages-- but these books are sold by the kilo anyway. He didn't really know the OS he just banged out a quick book to earn ayep a quick buck. I read his "consumer" columns in the NYtimes and find them useful but this book wasn't. Oh yeah and the switch ...... to Mac .... over rated but OK.

Great book for mac owners...

Now, this is how to write a how-to book!
I have gone over this book from front to back and find that there is nothing that I found wanting in the book.I learned things I could use in every chapter.
I'm pleased as punch!
Tom Negrino's book is all you will need to become a expert user of Keynote.Each process is broken down into easy-to-follow steps, including exactly which keystrokes are necessary.Especially useful are the many Tips and Screenshots that are included every chapter.I will be heartily recommending "Keynote for Mac OS X: Visual QuickStart Guide" to all of our Mac Users Group next week when I do a presentation on Keynote.

forget the manual
Forget the manual, get this book instead, especially if you want to learn how Themes and Master slides are constructed. I run KeynoteUser.com and I was the tech editor on this book (I read every page, cover to cover). I also wrote the first draft of the chapter on building custom themes...all that to say I STILL learned things from this book while I was reading through it. There's stuff in there you just won't find anywhere else. And no, I don't get any royalties from the sale of the book (that all goes to Tom for his hard work), I just think it's something every Keynote user should own. ... Read more

BEST INSTRUCTIONAL BOOK I'VE EVER READ!!!
This book makes learning Final Cut Express extremely easy and fun. It takes you step by step and shows you just how cool and intuitive the program is. The author explains things so clearly, it seems like she is sitting beside you, walking through every move. I have read 3 books on Final Cut Express and this book is by far the easiest way to learn it. You MUST get this book! It comes with a DVD which includes all the video files you'll need to work through all of the excercises. I plan to use all of Diana Weynand's books as I go on to learn Final Cut Pro 4 and the advanced version...and any other book she writes. Thank you Diana!!!

Good stuff - a bit dated
OK, so I'm just now getting around to reviewing this book and I'm not sure if I should. When this book first came out it was some great content. Like the other Missing Manual series, the content was terrific.

Very Useful Book
PACKED with information.Sometimes a lot to sift through to find exactly what I need, but so far, everything I've really needed has been in this book.Rolling along in middle age, I find reading complicated or lengthy material difficult on-line--so this hard copy works really well for me.

Inside .Mac Making the Most of Your .Mac Membership - Book Review Bad Teacher
I do not like the way the book is written (frankly). Maybe it's just me, but I like things explained better. I understand everything he is saying and he does give you a step by step list of how to do things, but he DOES NOT tell you the purpose of each of the features of .Mac, which to me is essential. It's almost as if he thinks we already understand what to do with each of the components of membership. He gives absolutely NO examples of what you'd use these things for and all he really would have had to do would've been include a couple paragraphs about it. As I read it's hard for me to follow along because he excludes essential information relevant to .Mac and the use thereof.

not useful anymore
While this book seemed very appealing for someone who is new to Mac OS X server and its Linux underpinnings, it is almost worthless at this point in time since it has not been updated to include the major changes that have been made in the past couple years.Save your money and visit online resources; they are much more valuable.

Not unless you're a time traveler
... This book is OLD and nigh unto useless unless you frequently travel in time to the first month after MacOS X Server was released.There's a reason why brick-and-mortar stores remove books from shelves and place them on the [bargain] rack....

Should be recalled by the Publisher
This book is (apparently) an early attempt to describe the setup, configuration and administration of Apple's OS X server. This kind of book is much needed but this one fails miserably because it is so woefully out-of-date. It does not address 10.2 Jaguar Server and, in fact, most of the screen captures and artwork are OS 9. When it does attempt to develop a subject it does so so lightly that it's almost a hoax. Avoid this book. Save your money. Look elsewhere. Print and read the Mac OS X Server Administrator's Guide that comes free on the 10.2 Server CD. It is ten times the book that this one is. ... Bad Dog!
Dull, dull, dull.Quite literally this is a bunch of documentation you can download from Apple's site bound in a book.Yes, you do learn something, but the ratio of useful information to "type in the program" is awful and it's very dry reading. Almost useless
The first few chapters are useful for learning the basics of Cocoa, but the last half of the book was written with the mistaken philosophy that people learn to code best by typing in lots of huge examples with almost no explanation. Useful, I suppose
The Interface Builder (which helps assemble the GUI for a Cocoa application) has changed a bit since this book was written. The palettes have been rearranged, and some of the interface elements are different. For example, the book directs one to click on the "electrical outlet" icon next to the class name. There is no longer such an icon in current versions of IB. Fortunately in all cases where the book no longer matches the tools it has been fairly easy to figure out what to do.Read more

Very well written
(Review written July 2004, reposting because it disappeared) This is a big book, so I was at first leery about whether I would be able to get through it without becoming depressed or lost. I did get through it, I didn't get lost, and I felt in capable hands all the way through. Furthermore, it was worth every minute of time I put into reading it.
Great, but outdated
I've really gotten a lot out of this book, and I would highly recommend it, except for the fact that it came out in 2002 and only covers 10.1 (with an appendix entry discussing the new features in the "up-coming 10.2"). Many of the methods documented here have been long since "deprecated."

Not impressed with the visual aspect
The content seems to be OK. But for a software book that is touted to be a visual presentation I was very disappointed with the lack of color in the book. The most color I saw was on the front cover. Very dull. If I had a choice to do it over I would pick a different publication and author.

A great technical referance book
This is a real go to book for troubleshooting under the hood types of Mac issues as well as looking for "how do I do this" types of information. I have been a computer technician for many years and have used a lot of technical books and I can say that this is one of the best I have used. It covers just about any issue you could come across in depth but concisely which every technician can appreciate.

MacFixit web site founder and author Ted Landau's newest book, Mac OS X Help Line, Panther Edition, has joined the ranks of David Weeks' favorite OS X books. Until now, I've recommended David Pogue's OS X The Missing Manual for beginners and intermediate Mac users. The nod for best advanced/expert level book has gone to Mac OS X Unleashed, penned by John and William Ray.
Easy to understand, a life-saver, essential for OS X users
Ted Landau is the proprietor of MacFixIt, the pre-eminent web site for late-breaking information on what's working with OS X, what's not, and how to fix it. The site has grown to enormous proportions over the years, though, and it can be hard to find a fix or troubleshooting method for a particular problem or issue.

Great but not if you upgraded from book 1 to book 2
The original book, which dealt with Keynote 1, was very helpful. I hoped this one would add or expand, since the author had a chance to improve on the original just as Apple had when they went up a version. No luck. I wasted my money. However, if you're buying this one and don't have a previous edition it should be great. Don't forget that Apple's Keynote version 3 is now out so you can expect another book soon, maybe.
Great Program!!
I am involved in doing around 100 Keynote Presentations a year! I am certified through Microsoft for PowerPoint. I find Keynote far superior to PowerPoint. Tom has done a magnificant job writing this book! If you are looking for a simple no nonesense book to learn Keynote look no further. I have used a lot of computer learning books this is the best!I recommend this one to everyone. The chapter creating custom themes is worth the price of the book.

Pretty Pictures, Piddling Information
I bought this book for full price ($24.95) at a Waldenbooks store when I was pressed for time. Not a good idea; and in this case, an expensive mistake. I do agree with the gentleman from Winnemucca, NV, who said that the book has high quality graphics and looks very good. (That's why I bought it without doing any research -- or even looking through it very carefully!)
Beginners Level Beautiful Book
The folk at Maran do beautiful books. This one is no exception. It is intended for the beginner to get started quickly. If you're an expert on previous versions of the software, this book will not do you much good. But if you just bought your first Mac and it has Tiger on it, this is a good place to start.

Back to basics, A gentle introduction
Learning Carbon is a gentle introduction to the very basics of Carbon programming.It carries the reader over the foothills of Carbon development to give them a solid grounding in the fundamental concepts of the API. This book will also be of some value to application developers who are already familiar with the classic Mac OS programming APIs but who need to know about the nuances and special flavors that the Carbon application framework adds to the Mac OS. Well written but simply too short and too simplistic
If your a beginner who wants to learn just enough about Carbon to get by this might be the right book for you, so long as you use it along with Apples excellent Inside Mac OS X documentation and Project Builder. However if you are looking for a more detailed book which covers pretty much everything you need to know but were afraid to ask I would recommend Carbon Programming by Kevin Bricknell which is about 10 times longer. Learning Carbon is not a bad book, it will give you a good grasp of the "feel" of Carbon and is an excellent guide to Apples Developer Tools but it is neither an extensive tutorial nor a particularly good reference.

I hope there is better on the way...
This book disappointed me - I read the online docs that became "Learning Cocoa", and liked them quite a bit, so I expected a similar book in "Learning Carbon".I was wrong.Read more

Another Mac Success
This is a vast improvement over previous versions.I can't wait to get six when it comes out. I volunteer at a local TV studio and we use iMovie to edit all of our productions.We are just learning Final Cut Pro, but iMovie is just as good.

IMOVIE HD and The Amature Professional
So Here I am once again everyone. Hello, this is Chris, and I first started my review project with my video camera, a JVC GDR-270 purchased at Best buy for $299and iMovie HD, The missing manual, and started to record everything I saw. Using the camera was not difficult but iMovie HD was at first. When opening the application, seemed almost intuitive. But any assisted guidance sure helps in the production process. Having said this, I used the book as I did my work following the guided pictures. I imported my video and began my personal version of a Hollywood production studio (Watch it Warner or Paramount, I think I found my niche,) and edited my movie for final output. During the process, there are tools in iMovie HD that will help make your movie look a bit more professional. What is not there is someone to help in which the book did well. Using the iMovie HD help file can be tedious, and can be very time consuming going back and forth, but with this book in one hand and a mouse in the other, I simply glided through the pages very easily. From start to finish, it was easily explained. I had no problems finding out how to utilize the video from my DV cam. I could explain the process of using iMovie HD but that is a whole other review, my review is on the book and I am glad I did. iMovie HD, the missing manual was a well organized, color photo book with easy to use guides and tips. I am glad I had the opportunity to review it because without it, I would still be importing my video 30 days later. Following the book was easy. But it is lengthy, over 400 detailed pages to follow. But with enough patience, not only will you be able to use iMovie hd on the fly, you will be on your way to utilizing more professional applications like Final Cut express an Final Cut Pro.

iMovie HD & iDVD 5 for Mac OS X
Jeff Carlson's Visual Quickstart Guides for iMovie are the best software manuals I've ever used. I've been dipping into the Visual Quickstart Guides for a number of programs for 5 years and I find them easy to read, direct, and clear as a bell.
