Panther help is on the way!
This is not the first user manual, by David Pogue, that I have purchased. I rely on these publications to not only give me the basics, but also a more advanced understanding of new and unfamiliar Mac operating systems. Get to know Panther with the help of David Pogue!

Mac OS Panther, The Missing manual
Excellent help so far. Our school IT administrator was so impressed he is ordering a copy for the staff. I never realised you could continue to burn info, images etc onto an ordinary cd! The Expose feature pointed out in this book is brilliant for quick access to school reports. I am not very familiar with the MacIntosh computers but this book is going to be a great source of info for OSX.

Bilingual
I'm becoming bilingual--I'm learning to speak Apple as well as Windows. I just got a new iMac G5. Apple basically tells you to learn the system by pushing all the buttons to see what they do. Yeah, right. I also have the XP Missing Manual. This is a good series, a lot better than the Dummie series, if you really are a dummie. Not very useful
I have had this manual for a year, and it's answered very few of my questions. The writing isn't nearly as clear as it could be, but moreover there are a lot of missing topics. Just now I am looking for guidance on uninstalling software, and it's not even mentioned. Earlier today I was looking for help on iTunes, and it couldn't answer my (pretty simple) question on that either. I had Sharon Aker?'s Mac Bible for 0S 9, and it was fantastic. I thought this would be similar, but it's not nearly as good. I hoping to find a better manual.

VERY ORGANIZED
VERY WELL ORGANIZED AND ESY TO FIND INFO. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE ON TROUBLE SHOOTING OF AREAS. BASICS ETC.
They say bible, they mean bible!!
The book is HUGE!! It is like from the beginning of "time" and covers everything possible--just as you would envision a bible doing. I really didn't expect the book to be so huge and literally the size of those big ole family bibles on book stands. ;-) Seriously, it is packed full of info, and although not the kind of book you would want to take to the beach to peruse, it is one to use for reference time and time again. ... The Soundtrack Pro Book
Mary Plummer, whose fun book on Apple Soundtrack helped walk users through the features of what was once a relatively limited utility, has upgraded the curriculum for the revamped Soundtrack Pro, a tool some have called "the Photoshop of audio". Now, as a Photoshop user myself, I wouldn't say Soundtrack has quite the depth to yet make that claim ... however, Apple has indeed rebuilt it from the ground up into what is leaps and bounds beyond the clip/loop manager it had been before. And Ms. Plummer, who has seen it grow each step of the way, has penned the best (if not only, at this time) source with which to learn its awesome capabilities.

There is no better book for new mac users
This is a must-have book for all new Mac users and not only! Don`t waist your time by figuring out everything by yourself or calling up your friend everytime you have a problem - this book will solve most of them and even more. David Pogue is a great, funny writer who helps you make your life easier and love your computer even more !

A Common-Sense Book NOT Written for Dummies
David Pogue has a genius for making the seemingly-complex simple enough for the average person to understand. This is the perfect gift for a writer writing about the Macintosh system; once you get over your intimidation about computers by following Pogue's straightforward and sometimes humorous examples, the user-friendliness of the Mac makes itself obvious, and you're on your way. An excellent, useful book for beginner and seasoned user alike!

Well written, funny, and informative
I read this book a few years ago when I bought a used Mac Plus at a garage sale. Mr. Pogue put me on track with my old computer in a very short time. After a few few months, my relatives and friends were calling me for advice. In many cases I was able to help using what I learned in this book.Read more

Great All around book
I have been using macs for about 5 years, and my knowledge doubled after i read this book. It is great for quick tips to be more productive. It also has a good amount of technical information including UNIX, which Mac OS X is based off of. I highly recommend for any mac user, new or not.

Hard to read
While this book has a lot of great information, it's very hard for me to sit down and read.Here's an example of a writing style:Under "Quitting Programs" the author writes "If I had a twisted and warped sense of humor, I'd simly tell you to quit applications by pulliiing your Mac's power cord fromthe wall socket.(Luckily, I don't.)There are, however, more sane ways toexit a program..."If you're like me, and this style drives you up the wall, try another book, because this book has examples like this on every page.It just gets tiring reading past the cute to get to the meat.

AppleScript: A Comprehensive Guide to Scripting and Automation on Mac OS X
this book suitable for beginner (as me) and advanced user.It start with basic AppleScript skill.And the best thing if the language it use is simple and interesting.You will not feel boring (like other training books) when read it.

Bible and Handbook
Easy to read and very complete, until with the least details (How to implement a debug mode, how to name subroutines, good practices to write the code, etc.)
It's True, This is THEE Book on AppleScript...
Prior to getting this book as a gift I read every printed book and pdf on AppleScript written in the last 10 years, and still my progress hit a wall that I couldn't get past. Seeing as I've only been scripting for a year, that's part of the problem. Most AppleScript books are either severely outdated, poorly written, or both. This book breathed new life into a subject that really needed a fresh perspective. This book is an extremely thorough reference, a challenging and inspiring workbook and a treasure trove of ready-to-use scripts and tools that you can take and make your own in the real world.

beginners please
Logically and spaciously designed, well-written and conceived, ilife 06 is the perfect beginner's introduction to creative tools. It allows someone who has net zero experience in visual, audio, or web processing to put something together on the web in a matter of days. The reason ilife 06 is so good is that it limits itself to instructing true beginners and never tries to be an all-in-one manual. Of course that's also the book's downside: it will only take you through the software's most basic uses, even though the ilife suite is a much deeper set of applications. Result: eventually you'll need another instructional guide, but untill then, this is the best start-up on the market.

Perfect for beginners and intermediates alike
Some of the other reviews have dinged this book because of its "beginner" nature, but this is precisely why you are using a training book for beginner to intermediate type software.If you knew how to use the software already, why would you need a book?No program in iLife '06 is professional quality, it was never meant to be.
Book lacks much information.
After glancing through the book I was very disappointed.The introduction told you that this was not a comprehensive guide and it was merely a supplement to other information such as the help and Jim Held's book.This was not stated in the information on the book.If that's the case, why not get Jim Held's book? I was particularly interested in iWeb.The information given for iWeb was sparce.It merely gave information on setting up a page and importing pictures from iPhoto onto the web page.It said nothing about links and other important web information.Perhaps it was on the disk.I dont know. I never opened thedisk because I knew I wanted to return the book. The only reason I gave it two stars at all was because it said that the disk contained turorials. ... Read more

Expensive series but surely valuable
My one and only complaint is the cost of these version specific books.The next OS X will be out in just a few months, but here we are with a 10.4 specific book.And of course this book by itself doesn't do much: you need others in the same series to have a good overall picture.

Photoshop CS2 RAW
I must admit, I took a long time switching to digital for photo work, and then I thought I was set. It appears that not only do a I have to master the camera for settings, but in those instances where the money talks, I have to learn about RAW format rather than the high res JPG format I thought was dealing me a good deal.
Too much graphic art - too little substance
In the field of digital photography, capturing and developing "RAW" files is a hot topic, largely because this is usually the route to the highest image quality attainable.The subject can be a bit opaque because each manufacturer mechanizes in-camera RAW files differently.Also, there are many different RAW converters (software packages for developing the RAW files into optimized images) from both the camera manufacturers and third parties.One of the most popular RAW converters is Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), originally released by Adobe as a plug-in for Photoshop 7 and Photoshop Elements, and now integrated into both products.
A nice introduction to RAW
I bought this book after reading the other 5-star reviews, so I thought Wow! This must be it! Well, it's almost 'it'. The book gives a well-written and useful explanation of what RAW is all about, and also shows some good examples of what you can do with RAW. It also helps you to decide when to shoot in RAW or when you'd better just switch to JPG.

It is what it says it is
This book is not perfect, but the harshly negative reviews it's gotten so far are pretty much baseless. This is a book about Mac OS X Server. It is not a book about BIND or Apache or VPNs or any of the countless other services it is possible to run *on* Mac OS X Server. If you want to learn about the specifics of Apple's management utilities or are preparing for the Apple Technical Coordinator certification exams, then this is a fine book. If you know absolutely nothing about networking or server administration and want a book that's going to turn you into a sysadmin overnight, then you should definitely look elsewhere.

Wished it was twice as thick...

Excellent book for the Mac Geek
I was a bit worried that the book would be more for beginners, but have been pleasantly surprised.I have been scripting on Linux and Unix machines for years and this is a great book for those who like working under the hood.

An advanced index to Tiger Unix
This book isn't for the average geek - if you're a geek but not a UNIX geek then don't buy this book.Even if you are a Unix geek the book is of potentially less value than you might expect... so let me adjust your expectations a bit.

Practical and fun
I've used iWork since the first version but I don't do presentations that often so I never delved into some of the really unique features.
Real world iWork
I have spend the last two days in company with this book and I must say it is was a very fun and learning exercise. The pictures and the instruction are just on time, so You can see for Yourself that you are on the right track.
Best REAL WORLD training for iWork
I usually don't write a lot of reviews but I felt I had to for this book. I'm not sure what that other guy was referring to. I recently had a project where I had to rapidly produce a presentation using iWork. I've never used the software before but this book got me up and running immediately. I had no problem following the instructions and was able to apply what I learned to my project right away.

Good information, but not without its own set of problems...
The book provides a great deal of detailed information that is difficult to find other places. For that reason alone, it belongs on any Debian administrators bookshelf. However, it has some problems in the way the author orders things: He'll often list steps out of order, a cooking parody might read like this:
Using a Debian based distro?Are you comfortable with it? Then this is the book for you!
This book truly rocks.It's aimed at intermediate to advanced users (I'm in the upper tier of "intermediate") and it's exclusively devoted to Debian.Debian isn't very well covered in books, but this is the consummate Debian reference.It's got a lot of good basic Linux stuff (but then Debian is a Linux distribution).

I am so glad this book is still around! I had forgotten what a great, useful, overview of basic typographic principles this "little gem" is.

This is a must have easy to read book that Mac users should have in their library. It provides helpful tips on how to make your designs look professional and help out with the work flow.

Lays a great foundation
This book covers a lot of ground - great for beginning Xcoders, especially CodeWarrior converts. Not quite as in-depth as I thought it would be, based on the description, but well worth the price.

solid IDE for Mac programmers
Macintosh programmers live in a restricted world; a ghetto, perhaps. The nice features of the Mac user interface and operating system also tend to make it hard to find good programming tools. Luckily, Apple has gone a long way to addressing this with the promulgation of Xcode.
Lots of useful info.
As to a recommendation, I'd say yes. Step into Xcode is most valuable to those getting started with Xcode, but even for people who have been using it for a little while you are sure to pick up a few tips and tricks. ... Read more

It does the job but I want more
If you a looking for a fast guide so that you can produce simple music withou much thinking, try this one. I used it ans it gave me some insights, but I really missed more in-depth explanations of key concepts, and more explanations about the consequences of my tweaks. The tutorials as much more "do this and then do that", than "do this, and this will happen, otherwise, this will happen because of this", which I prefer.
Not really what i needed but........
The book is great, but for the newest of the newest users of reason. Also, it is of utmost importance to have some sort of midi controlling device in your posession before buying this book, as the book references the useage of your "assumed" midi controller. So, if you dont have one, you will find yourself skipping several large sections of the text.
Einstein would have loved this book...

It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction (Albert Einstein)."This book makes the complex seem really simple.I'd recommend this book for a couple of reasons: 1) finally, a book that EXPLAINS the knobs and faders in layman's terms!; 2) it doesn't read like a typical book, in that the author makes minimal use of text and relies heavily on graphics (a picture IS worth 1,000 words); 3) the graphics are optimally labeled/captioned; 4) it follows a logical progression, rarely introducing you to concepts that are overwhelming without having first provided the fundamental building blocks/context behind them; 5) It is a great reference to keep next to you on your computer desk, even after you've mastered the basics and played with it at an intermediate level (re-readable); and 6) it is written in such a way that I embrace it, rather than loathe it, and it simply inspires me to sit down with the program and jump the hurdles like an Olympic gold-medalist.The only thing I wish this book had is a Glossary.But I can live without that.I'd highly recommend this book to Reason 3.0 users at a beginner to intermediate level.Please feel free to disagree with my opinion; let us compare opinions, invite a few more points of view, and debate, like the humans we are. ...
