good book for MacOS X Java developers
The first half of the book is good material.After reviewing some fundamentals of MacOS and how it applies to Java, you create a sample application.Most of the material in this half is still relevant even 3 years later - although Java 1.3 is now in the past, the author did include info about 1.4.The IDE section is probably the most dated with no discussion about Eclipse.One nit here, is that there is a lot of code to enter and the author shouldn't have waited until 2/3 of the way through the book to suggest downloading code from the O'Reilly site.
It should have been titled "Mac OS X for Java Beginners"
This book was misleading with the title, it seemed as though a large portion of the book was dedicated to covering basic Java concepts (definition of EJB, JMX, JSP, etc., JVM layout).
Mac OS X for Java Geeks is a solid...
I'll start with my grade, a C-, generously given.The author, Will Iverson, did a good job of briefly touching on all aspects of Java and Java development.He gave a chapter to the Java topics: Apple's JVM, Java tools/IDEs, Java GUIs, stand-alone Java apps, Servlets, JSPs, Tomcat, and EJBs.And a few other chapters on more Mac OS X stuff like databases, Apple extensions, and some Apple specific Java APIs.

Endless knowledge
I have been watching/reading/listening to Leo Laporte since his days on ZDTV and then TechTV and he seems to have an endless supply of knowlege whether it is with PCs or in this case, Macs. Although this particular book is a little more basic/beginner then I would have liked, it still provided much-needed knowledge and information regarding Mac OS X Tiger. Also, be sure to check out his many podcasts and video podcasts available through iTunes for more information.

A Very Good Book for the Mac Timid
Leo is the man! He and his co-author have written a must-have resource for those of us who use the Mac but do not necessarally explore the OS much. I have learned something from every page. I have been using a Mac since 1992 and would call myself an enthusiastic user but not an explorer. This book has made me want to explore the OS a little more and has pointed me to easy paths to do that. And I am only on page 60ish!

a Mac lifestyle
As Miser explains, there is a lot that you can do with a Mac running OS X. The user interface is beguilingly simple to learn. And this has characterised Macs over their 20 plus years. But you can learn here that under the simple UI is a ton of complex capabilities that you can access.

not for a beginner
i bought this book as a recommended text for a beginner's course on photoshop.the first time i cracked it open, i was trying to get a jump on my 2nd or 3rd class, and i was reviewing "how to draw a path using the pen tool."the instructions in the book were so thoroughly useless to me, they may as well have been written in mandarin chinese.in fact, i only figured it out after i put the book away and just went at via trial and error.you would think the authors really would have made considerable effort to explicitly cover such a central topic, but they only devote 1/2 a page of text and 1/2 a page of diagrams (which don't completely correspond to the text, i might add) to it.
A great value!
In 534 pages, Weinmann & Lourekas cover the basics of Photoshop CS 8.0, as well as the more intricate details.The guide is divided into 25 chapters, each of which focuses on a different topic.The authors start with a few introductory chapters for Photoshop newbies, and gradually get into the real nitty-gritty that is Photoshop CS.
Reads too much like textbook but still pretty good
This book isn't the "best" book for beginners but a great supplementary book or a pretty good semi-beginners book if you had the chance to play with photoshop or have some basis of it.

Good, Bad, Ugly
I found the first two sections of this book very useful. ie, I have come to LOVE Mac OS's zoom feature, which I use all the time now to make small video boxes 'fill' my 17" screen. There are other fun trick and tips in those first two sections.
Great for Code Writers ONLY
I had to return this book, only because of my unfamiliarity with UNIX.Long gone are the days when I used to knock out code.I've been spoiled (ruined some might say) by years of GUI and the heavy use of utility programs.
The perfect blend of tips and technique
I love clever tips, and Scott Knaster delivers a ton of them here, many seen nowhere else. But this tome goes way beyond tips, diving into the gnarly details of Tiger that others have glossed over, such as application internals, Widget construction, and Unix command language. So many Mac books are just a rehash of the surface of the user interface. Scott's book is way ahead of the pack. ... Read more

How the Mac used to Work.
Since OSX, I am told, this book is of little informational use to me, knowing well the inner workings of a PC. I am planning on purchasing a Mac with Intel support, so I thought I would start my research on how Unix runs and how proprietary macintosh works. So far, less than a third of the book is at best mediocre information and the other portion is dated computer jargon. Two buck expense though, I am not crying. Thanks.

The BEST book if you seek illumination, not documentation!
This book was written by two gentlemen with whom I had the good fortune to work at MacUser Magazine (before it was acquired by MacWorld). John Rizzo was Technical Editor at MacUser, and he's easily the most accurate and informed author available for this kind of book. Dan Clark is one of America's most gifted technical illustrators; his "see through" drawings of computers & components always AMAZE other artists and even the most hardcore techies. True to the Mac tradition, this book feels like a looking-glass that lets you float knowlingly through complex electronics, instead of boring you with Windoze-style "hardware documentation." A great gift for budding young geeks and undecided potential Mac owners.

This book delivers on it's promise
This book did a great job of really explaining how the Mac and all the stuff inside it work. It's really good if you want a broad knowledge base for how the computer works inside and out. You'll learn about memory, CPU's, drives, peripherals (monitors, keyboards, mices) and all kinds of other stuff. What this book DOESN'T do is tell you how to work it. You won't learn how to run the operating system or how to set up an ethernet network, for example.Read more

Comprehensive and thorough
I have to confess that I approached the nearly 900 pages of Todd and Kirk's book with a feeling of 'Oh no, not another Mac operating system book - I'll leave that until I have time for it... maybe when I retire'. My shelves contain many such books, dating back to MacOS 7. Most are unthumbed. This suited my specific needs
I didn't want to buy a book where a significant portion is devoted to introductory comments for beginners. When I bought David Pogue's Jaguar Edition of the OSX Missing Manual, I was new to OSX and it suited my needs perfectly (Pogue is a great writer). However, I've moved on a bit and Pogue's Panther Edition covers too much of the same ground for me. Excellent, comprehensive reference, perfectly written
Todd Stauffer has done it again -- this version of his book doesn't disappoint. I bought David Pogue's book for the Jaguar edition and couldn't figure out what the fuss was about it. Pogue's book pales in comparison when it comes to meat and detail, Mastering Mac OS X covers everything I wanted and needed. Sure, Pogue's book is smaller and lighter and so maybe more convenient in that sense, but Stauffer's book really helps you learn Mac OS X inside and out. Read more

Wait for the next one
This book is merely a text copy of the information that ships with the training DVD you get when you buy Aperture. In other words, you already have all this information if you own the program. The only value to this book is as a companion to the DVD or if you don't own the program and want to see what it can do. I'd wait for the next title in the series if you want some real training.

Do NOT buy this book!
This slim volume is mostly white space and very large type. None of the information in this little booklet is particularly helpful nor illuminating and it should have all been included with the application anyway.

doesn't cover OSX
I bought this to recommend to friends who are shifting to Mac. While it has lots of good and still relevant information, it was written before OSX so many things are changed. Despite that, t's handy for those who are familiar with Windows to find the equivalents in the Mac.

Still Useful!
If you are learning the Mac or Windows OS as a second language then this book is the best investment you could make.Terms are translated between the two environments by quick, simple look-up in a translation dictionary.More important, the translations are actually useful.The concepts are translated, not just the words.Look up a term and you get an explanation of the equivalent idea and jargon, even if the terms have no exact match.This is the book to have in your hands while you talk to foreign tech support. I've purchased a couple of copies of this book each year since it came out, mainly because other people borrow mine and then beg to keep it.I was buying another couple of copies today in Jan 2003 (one for me, one for my new tech support person) and I realized that there are very few computer reference books that are still so useful 4 years after publication.This is one computer reference book that will get dog-eared.

Only book of its kind .. .found it invaluable!!

Thei Pod Book
If you don;t understand your iPod features this book will explain it all

High Marks!
Having worked for 10 years at the Berkeley Public Library I've handled, perused and read countless books. The iPod Book rates as one of the most useful. As a book person who happens to prefer a no-tech/low-tech lifestyle, I found the book to be accessible and fun. It was a little mischievous and goofy rather than dry, plodding techno-bab, with an excellent balance between text, photos, screens and other illustrations. I read and highlighted the first 67 pages of The iPod Book and made 3 trips to the Apple store before purchasing a 30G iPhoto iPod. I found Scott's guidance around playlists especially useful. As a member of UpSurge! a band celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year, I'm a part of 'the industry' (I worked on the sequencing of Nancy Wilson's 2005 Grammy-winning recording RSVP). Membership has its privileges: each year industry friends and other artists I meet on my journey, give me their CDs. It's difficult to store much less listen to each CD with the attention it deserves. The iPod and The iPod Book to the rescue! With the guidance of chapter 8 on playlists, and smart playlists I created one named "Just Friends" that includes at least one track from friends' CDs. This enables me to listen to these tracks on the plane, in hotel rooms, etc. Trane, Aretha, Miles et al will always be in heavy rotation on the home stereo system. Finally, a legendary Berkeley High School art teacher retired after teaching for 37 years. Thanks to The iPod Book, my iPod acted as DJ and created a traffic jam on the dance floor for the first 15 tunes and received high marks from the teacher and those present to celebrate her retirement!

Nice book
I'm not ready yet to publish a review but, i may tell you something. This is a Nice book. Seam to be a little outdated because Shake is now 4.0.Shake is a powerfull software and it's a bit hard to learn by ourself. This book will help you but it's not easy to learn that kind of software from a book, a video training will do a better job. Anyway, this book is a good starting point.

I guess I'm spoiled...
after using the "Creating Motion Graphics" books by the Meyers for After Effects. They know how to teach! I'm preparing for a job on a big budget animation feature that will use Shake for compositing, hoping to move from the world of Motion Graphics to high-end compositing...W-e-l-l, this book didn't teach me much at all in terms of concepts or the art of compositing. I "hear" Marco is a nice guy and an accomplished compositor, which makes the book all the more disappointing. I'm not saying I didn't learn anything, but "now click here, now click there...and now add this value"...ain't that cool!?" is NOT truly teaching me anything. The new "Studio Techniques" book forcompositing in After Effects is excellent. I wish there was a comparable book for Shake. This ain't it...and unfortunately there aren't any alternatives. I strongly recommend reading Ron Brinkman's book, The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" BEFORE diving into Marco's Shake book.

Totally Worth It
This book by far is worth every penny. Why? It includes a disc with a 30 day trial for Shake! The software costs so much that many people can't afford it. What if you want to learn Shake, but not buy Shake? Buy this book then... The chapters are easy to follow. The screenshots are helpful as well. ... Read more
