5-0 out of 5 stars Great Handbook. Extremely helpful for developing a DR plan.
I found the book extremely valuable in getting a disaster recovery plan developed. The book was very helpful in not only showing step-by-step HOW to put together our plan, but also did a great job in explaining WHY something should be in the plan. It also focused on the entire business, not just on technology as some other books on the subject do.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a HandBook
Don't get carried away by the title descriptions "Hand book" and "step-by-step plan". If anyone is buying this book with an intention of developing a BCP/DR plan, implementing and testing it they will be disappointed. This book only helps to get an overview of BC/DR planning. I couldn't find anything readily usable in the companion CD. It contains a bunch of documents with one page and one table in it. You wouldn't find anything important and useful such as sample BC/DR plan, emergency response procedure and flow diagram.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and very insightfull
This book reminds me what effects an extended outage can have.I was able to find at least one item in every chapter of this book that I could easily and cheaply implement, that not only saved me money, but allowed me to better ensure my business will continue to function in the event of serious unplanned outage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
OK, If I could I'd give it 4.5 stars or so -- there are flaws. But basically, the book has a lot of great info, especially for geeks who work in the software business. There are very few books on the business side of things.
4-0 out of 5 stars This guy has *issues*
Yes, Charles is brilliant, arrogant and is lightening-fast in seeing the failings of others and himself and is willing to take ownership of them (rectifying the situation and doing something about it is another story completely...). However, he also has a massive inferiority-complex when up against anyone with more brains, more money, more priviledge or more power than himself hence his complete disdain for anything Microsoft-related (never mind that it was the hand that fed him and he continues to bite it). He also fails to see that you can attract a lot more bees with honey instead of vinegar. It's not a coincidence that everyone from Vermeer, except Charles eventually landed a job at Microsoft, I suspect Gates was smart enough to see just how insanely jealous Charles must be of him. As for his acidic portrayal of many of the players in the book, I'm fairly sure Charles really reserves his most toxic rage and disdain for those persons who display A)either negative qualities he has and sees a lot of himself in and wished he did not have (i.e career opportunism, uppity-ness) or B)positive qualities he wished he had but is too nasty to ever take time out to acquire and attract (i.e Gates with his intelligence, power and wealth).
5-0 out of 5 stars Straight shooter who did it right
Charles Ferguson, an MIT PhD, was the founding CEO of Vermeer Technologies, a company that developed one of the first web design tools.Vermeer sold the company to Microsoft for a boatload of money and lived to tell the tale. It's a fasinating story of what its really like on the inside of a high-tech startup replete with politics, hard-ball negotiations and strange bedfellows.Ferguson may be arrogant, but he's smart and tells it like it is.Anyone thinking of building a startup should read this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It'll get you there, eventually, sort of.
MOST of this book except for exercise 2 in chapter 1 which uses PivotCharts as well as the previously added PivotTables. The instructions are unclear about several points having to do with the fact that they seem to want you to copy both from their instructions and from their illustrations and the two are mixed and switch from one place to the othe with little warning.I found this inconsistancy an unneeded source ofpotential confusion.Still, it does layout the basic operation of Access.I'm only on Chapter 2 but I hope they later explain how to filter form field inputs ourselves instead of just looking at the ones they already did for us.They act like the ability to filter is some big deal and not a basic function, I don't need a sales pitch I need instructuions.I skipped lots of those exercises. They also fail to indicate where buttons (Query butons aren't indicated in any illustrations) are then they tell you to use it.I'm still not sure which query button they are referring to most of the time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Excellent. This book is a practical approach to security assessment from planning to the final report.Being in this field for over ten years, this is the first book that truly provides the appropriate level of guidance from not just the security assessment but also from the business standpoint where it looks at involved risks. The appendix is excellent and extremely useful, particularly the questionnaires, which can be modified, based on the type of assessment/client.The book is well structured and very clear, and provides a logical approach to addressing and assessing information security issues.Highly recommended reading. ... This book is intended for a read on topics of MIS (Management Information Systems), a predominantly Management subject, that analyses solutions for Business challenges through the effective usage of Information Technology. Though it is titled differently, its coverage of the MIS topics is reasonably sufficient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
Howard's book is an excellent overview of a number of service provider issues and technology. For myself, it helped me to wade through the morass of VPN technologies on the market when we were researching the replacement of our frame relay network. If you have an interest in the issues faced by service providers, or if you would like to learn more about wide area network technologies, then this book is a must-read. Howard's sense of humor and insightful anecdotes make this an especially easy read, despite the high technical content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too bad so many startups never read this book
Howard Berkowitz is known in the networking community for his writing which has helped many, many people earn advanced certifications. But Howard doesn't write to that goal; he writes, instead, to the goal of helping people understand what it takes to make a network actually perform and deliver the business function it was purchased for. This is another in that series of lucid and focused books.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for newbie Supervisor and as a refresher
This book is well laid out with basic statement on how to function in the new supervisory position and some practical examples of situations you may find yourself addressing. There are questions to help you notice areas that you may have just scanned over. It may take only 55 minutes to read, however it will take some time to naturedly gain the skill sets.

1-0 out of 5 stars wordy and confusing
I am using this book in my Masters of Info Systems class this semester and I have to say it is one of the worst text books I've ever read for a class. The topics go back and forth, often picking up an earlier topic in later chapters when they could have been easily included in the same chapter, and key concepts are discussed before they've been formally introduced.1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't use this book to teach an EC class!!!
This book did nothing to enhance my knowledge of E-Commerce.The terms used in this book are not terms that are commonly used. The authors should not be writing textbooks or instructional guides. The illustrations and diagrams did nothing to help the reader understand the material. The diagrams were literally a joke used just to fill up space.I quickly got tired of being given a short definition and told it will be discussed later. The book doesn't flow and leaves the reader frustrated. The authors use of E-Commerce terminology was too often bogged down in clichd rhetoric.Don't use this book to gain knowledge about E-Commerce you'll find yourself falling asleep and rereading sentences way too often. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Focusing on the Business Layers of Enterprise Architecture
Melissa has produced an excellent, non technical book which outlines:4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
The author's writing style and ability to explain concepts is outstanding! I would love to see her author a more current edition of the book, including additions/modifications made to the Zachman model since this edition. Would also like to see more discussion/explanation about the technology views of the model. The book is excellent reading .. would recommend it for executives, managers, and technical folks alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars A seminar for the E-ntrepreneur
Here, at last, is a concise introduction to the world of e-commerce for the semi-savvy professional. Terminology, strategic planning, branding, advertising, traffic generation, and, oh yes, technology... every topic budding e-ntrepreneurs need to consider before risking their futures is here presented with clarity and grace. One caveat: those looking for strictly the technical or strictly the business side of e-commerce will find this book lacking. To explain the whole, the author had little choice but to abbreviate some of the parts.5-0 out of 5 stars Real, practical advice.
This book isn't about just creating a website--it's about running a business! With the help of this book, I was able to come up with a plan for expanding my business into e-commerce.The book is very readable, and full of sensible advice. Each chapter moves you closer to making your idea a reality. It starts with getting real about what's going to work and steps you right through everything you need to know, all the way through building your site in the most economical way and right up to marketing it.My hat's off to this author for writing a book that's a good read and good advice, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent basic primer for e-commerce entrepreneurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Business Systems and Simulation
Dynamic Modeling for Business Management is an excellent reference book for business and industrial engineer students and practitioners. The book provides explanations and examples for adding dynamics to some of the basic business systems and processes. The mathematical models introduced in operations research and management science courses have very restrictive assumptions.Simulation allows exploring more realistic models and enables the reader the appreciation the value of adding more realism of systems by having the capability of more realistic properties and feedback mechanisms. An example is waiting lines. In most real situations, the service rate is affected by the current length of the waiting line.Queuing models ignore this. Using simulation, you can model the results of these interdependencies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for applies dynamic modeling
This is an excellent textbook for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate course in business simulation modeling. It might also be useful in an engineering course on simulation modeling, especially in more applied areas like industrial engineering.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book and Can Easily Be Put into Practice...
I read this after Sterman's 'Business Dynamics'. While 'Business Dynamics' is a graduate level text book, this book is more aligned to the requirements of practitioners like consultants and managers.
