4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content Str
Are you overwhelmed with the need to create more content, faster, customized for more customers, and for more media than ever before?Do you consider storing documentation on a server as an effective a content management system? Do you want to learn how content management will empower your organization? The answer to these questions and many more is covered in Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content Strategy by Ann Rockley with Pamela Kostur and Steve Manning of The Rockley Group. The Rockley Group is one of the leading providers of content management methodologies. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Content Management projects
This book is an absolute must for Content Management projects. It touches all of the important aspects: Technical, functional and process. There is something for all stakeholders in a EMS/CMS project.2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title...really unifed content creation
I was disappointed that the book was really focused on how to create reusable elements that go into product information such as data sheets, marketing collateral, technical support, etc.It focused on auditing the content, finding the reusability elements across departments, then designing an appropriate hierarchy on top of a content management system. It assumed that content drives the information architecture when in most applications it is the business processes that drive the architecture. It ignored the majority of enterprise content like email, word docs, design specs, forms, etc. that make up the real information content of the enterprise.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid publication for DSS & IT Theory--Great research tool!
Not everyone will find this book as extremely useful as I did. The information contained within can be intimidating because of the sheer volume packed into its over 900 pages, but for someone wanting a foundation of Decision-support theory, this book should fulfill your need.
3-0 out of 5 stars Rambling book
This book could get away with about 2/3 the volume of content still be interesting. There really does not seem to be any structure to the way a chapter flows. Its easy to skim, but difficult to read.
1-0 out of 5 stars Purpose of the book: separate you from your money???
As far as I can tell the prupose of this book is to separate you from a great deal of your money!

5-0 out of 5 stars CIO Reference Manual
As a CIO I though CIO Wisdom hits the nail on the head on many of the challenges and issues facing today's CIO's.Sound and practical advice from those actually performing in the job was quite refreshing to the theoretical approach found in many other books on this topic.I only wish that many of my customers (business line leaders and executives) would read this book to better understand the value of IT can bring to our organization.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb compilation of knowledge & experience
The seventeen articles in this compendium represents contemporary and topical subjects, each written by a seasoned CIO.I was as impressed with the selection of articles as I was with the content because each topic is foremost on the minds of CIOs and senior IT managers today.5-0 out of 5 stars CIO Wisdom, Indeed !!
Truly, this is 'CIO Wisdom' - set down by CIOs and IT managers who deal day-to-day with information technology in perhaps the most challenging environment - Silicon Valley itself. As a 42-year veteran of the IT industry, I think this is the first time I've seen so much down-to-earth, practical and useful IT guidance in one place. The chapters are clearly and well-written. The authors get right down to the meat of the subject and provide practical suggestions for improving IT delivery. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice use of a spreadsheet
Powell takes the interesting approach of showing how to model a solution to a problem, and using a spreadsheet as the engine within which to embed the solution. Who would have thought in the 70s, when the first computer spreadsheets arose, that one day they could be applied to this?

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Guide for Freelancers
I've been a freelance designer for many years and have read many books and papers on the business-side of design. I have to say that Perkins' book is the most thorough, easiest-to-understand guide on the ins and outs of freelancing I've read to date. The book is a practical guide on how to meander through the process of running a design organization - whether you're a one-person shop or a full-fledged agency. You've got a hot idea for a new dot-com, and you're itching to join the folks who regularly show up on CNBC and at the Lexus dealerships in Silicon Valley. But you also know your odds of big-time success are about as long as Bill Gates's position in MSFT. What do you do? John Nesheim, an adjunct professor at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, who has personally structured over $300 million in new-venture deals, lays out the step-by-step skinny in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Up Business Bible
I lead the technology center for an up and coming online payment services company. To say that High Tech Start Up has been very helpful in our growth is truly an understatement. My boss lugs around his copy of the book and constantly quotes from it, calling it his bible. The book has guided him in positioning the company in the market accordingly and has helped him in making informed decisions. I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to carve a niche in the high tech industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, I highly recommend it.
I bought this book in early 2001 at the advice of a friend of mine who was working at a VC firm on Sand Hill Road.I have found it to be an invaluable reference over the years, and have recommended it to many friends.I also found the "Resources for Entrepreneur" section and VC discussions very helpful.Mr. Nesheim also provides an updated list of references, resources, and other recommended books on his website. If you are interested in starting a high-tech company, read High Tech Start Up and all the other books he recommends. If you read High Tech Start Up first, then the Clayton Christensen books, the Ries and Trout books, "Building Strong Brands" by David Aaker, the Geoffrey Moore books, and "The Secrets of Word of Mouth Marketing" by Silverman, you will see how it all dovetails nicely. There is much more to this business than just great ideas.

3-0 out of 5 stars generally good information, but misleading..
I took Nesheim's course at my school. I feel like the book is there mainly for him to make money off the students. I don't know if the business book genre is all like this, but the font is double spaced and large. You could shrink it to 120 pages and make it paperback since the book isn't worth the suggested $50.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need to get started with Spatial ? Get this book.
Excellent book. I have been using Oracle Spatial for years but found various useful insights in this book. It is well laid out, accessible and covers pretty much all the bases. Good examples and case studies. Tackles the thorny issues around spatial indexing as well as I have seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Lack of discounts aside, the book is a tremendous value. It's well-written, indexed, and edited and a pleasure to read. It's been great fun for me to work through the examples.I only have 2 significant complaints: (1) there were far too few diagrams (i.e., maps), particularly in chapter 7 where they would have helped greatly and (2) there should have been more discussion about mapping basics including map projections since this is a subject about which most DBA's and developers have little knowledge and an area where mistakes in storing, manipulating, and displaying geographic data are often made. I know there are cartography books dedicated to this sort of thing, but I suspect many Oracle users would not even know enough to bother with them.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good book, no discounts
First off this book seems to be excellent for the topic at hand. However I am giving it 1 star since the publisher has put a restriction on it that it can only sell for the full book price. Retailers are not allowed to sell this book for less than the publisher price of $69.99

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental Olap principles
I was impressed by the quality of this book; this is probably the most complete book on OLAP theory and is a fundamental reading for professionals involved in the design of olap systems. In most cases it gives all the details and information needed to master this technology. It also contains some practical examples that are very useful to see how the theory can be applied in the real world.4-0 out of 5 stars Good OLAP Methodology

5-0 out of 5 stars Emphasizing the essentials
This book takes e-learning to its core mandate, that of engaging and involving the learners, so that they learn the key skills and knowledge required.5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for new designers
This book is a must have for the aspiring e-Learning developer. It reviews enough theory to make the point and directs the reader quickly through the logic and science of good e-Learning design.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book directly applies to your work!
Dr. Allen is a champion of learner-centric design - and has written a refreshingly reader-centric book about the topic. He understands that learning is an "internal, personal, and ultimately individual act." His words reveal his passions and opinions in such an authentic manner that you can quickly understand his perspective, and extract points of meaning that can directly apply to your work. As a producer and designer of interactive media, I continually find his insights an inspiration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Read this book second
I just finished reading "Learning By Doing" from cover to cover. Those who are practicing in this field will want to read this book to learn of techniques that might not be readily apparent such as branching stories and interactive spreadsheets.I would recommend that they read "What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy" by James Paul Gee first, however, as I found the writing style of "Learning By Doing" a little sparse, like fleshed out bullet point slides. It is clear, though, that the author has a lot of experience in this topic and his book is a contribution to the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner by Clark
It is no secret that "conventional eLearning" is not as engaging, interactive and interesting-and therefore also not as effective-as it should be. And we know that even current technology has the potential to do much more for "eLearning," or "technology-enabled learning" than we see today. And the rate of change in most technology is accelerating rather than slowing. It is the future potential that excites most of us who are involved in learning technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation.
