5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Book
We purchased this book and it was very helpful. We also had Mr. Schmidt come to our company to mentor us. He was amazing. He finished all of our reports, suggested others, and enhanced ones that we thought were finished. He was here for two days and he managed to do more work than the consultant that we had for a month! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Itconfusing Services?
This book is very formal approach to IT services. Please don't give it to your customers/clients it will scare them. If you need humor or analogies to make things clear consider another book. The book is very hard to read with wordy sentences. Simplicity is much better, and this book makes some things even more confusing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great concepts but lacks examples
I bought it with the objective of having it as a reference for managing data center operations. The ideas and concepts were very interesting, and I totally agree that the starting point should include determining linkages with the core business and getting management support. Most useful to me are the following chapters:4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading if you deal with IT data centers.
This is a book that many IT managers have to read, it's a quick meal though, no details but a balanced dose of good ideas and a window on Service delivery where IT data centers is no longer a "cost center". The only thing I did not like is to center the data center around SUN and Oracle or a brand in general, although it is clear the book reflects the authors experience in SUN/Oracleenvironment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook
I had to purchase this book for a masters levels class, and was initially shocked at how expensive it was.Don't let the price tag put you off - this is the most comprehensive textbook on Information Technology I've come across in a long time.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Creative Approach But Some "Tweaking" Needed
Business Driven Technology by Haag, Baltzan, and Phillips is quite a new textbook (1st edition in 2005) designed for undergraduate Information Systems courses. I am one of the "lead customers" of this textbook and have been using it for two semesters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your time & hard earned cash... read the pro IT journals instead
Money making excuse by publisher.... applies to all "new" editions as well. Will easily fool those who are outside the industry... ironic that it is a textbook used in many business schools. Any IT pro will immediately tell you that it is a very expensive and obsolete book with lame and obsolete case studies which is the rationale for its yearly updates. Any keen reader will be a lot better off reading CIO Insight, Baseline, InformationWeek, eWeek, Optimize etc. especially in their extensive case studies and timely technology editorials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cumbersome reading
The book suffers from an over-abundance of references.Let me be clear that I can appreciate it when an author cites references, but when this is done too frequently and directly in the text, it breaks up the flow and makes the reading more tedious and un-interesting.So that you understand what I am talking about, consider that the author often cites independent studies.Sounds good, but I would be happy enough to hear about the results of the study rather than be forced to read detailed information about its authors, co-authors and dates of the study directly in-line with the text. This is how the text SHOULD read: "A recent study concluded that bla, bla, bla."The study could be referenced with a numbered footnote.Instead, this author might use:"In a study conducted by Anderson et al.(2002); Smith and Rupp, 2002; and Zhu and Kraemer, 2002; (see also Appendix 2A in this book) it was shown that bla, bla, bla."After reading the first 10 chapters, I actually began to count these endless references and taking chapter 10 as an example, there are approximately 114 instances of another author being referenced by name and publication date directly in the flow of the text!I am not kidding. The reader begins to get the feeling that nothing in the book actually came from its author(s) but from the other 114 dutifully cited references.Although this is certainly not the case, I cannot overstate the degree to which this becomes distracting and makes the text read somewhat like a legal brief! Most authors use a small superscripted number to refer to either a footnote or a bibliography, but that is not this author's style and the book is definitely the worse for it.An additional un-numbered reference section, typically spanning several pages, is also found at the end of each chapter!ENOUGH with the references!
2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Great
I bought this book as requirement for an MIS class. The book has good graphics, but the authors have tried to cram in a lot of information. As a result, things have'nt been explained systematically. One has to move to a later chapter to look for things discussed earlier. The quality of writing leaves much to be desired. In a nutshell, the book is only ordinary. It is much like a glossy story book for children, certainly not worth the price. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source of Information
I felt this book was a valuable source of information.I needed a brief account on the necessary components on being a successful and effective team leader. This book led me from step to step on how to go about learning how to be a successful team manager. It included the basic know-how of team leadership, like being prepared and posing crucial questions to the team. However, it also went in-depth into the necessary skills needed in order to manage a goal-oriented group.I felt that this book not only acknowledged how to plan for a discussion, but it also looked at the real truth that can come up in group discussion. It analyzed the ins and outs of a group dynamic and even suggested ways of combating difficulties that arise in the process. The authors, Donald Hackett and Charles L. Martin, have a style of writing that is efficient, easy to grasp, and sensible. They were able to provide a step by step analysis on what it takes to be a valuable facilitator, but also the things that come up that leaders need to deal with carefully.Their topic ranges from the basic start of what a facilitator is to what skills a team leader needs. Then they consistently maintain this vision of how an effective leader can lead the group to a successful completion of the task.I enjoyed reading this book, because it not only opened my eyes to how I see leaders perform in groups I have been involved in, but I also know now how to be a successful facilitator in groups that I may choose to lead in the future.I can know use these suggestions and techniques to really drive a team into successful task completion.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has thought about leading a team in group discussion. The authors' simple, to the point style of writing, including examples and suggestions, made for a delightful read.I enjoyed reading this book as much I enjoyed learning from it as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Mathematical than Technical
Defiantly more of a math book than a programming guide, but that was what I was expecting. This book explains how to use neural networks in the field of finance. It does so very logically and mathematically. You are shown how to apply neural networks to many different financial problems. But you are mostly left to yourself to actually implement the neural networks on a computer system. Some example source code is provided for MathCad, which is an expensive software package you can buy separately.

5-0 out of 5 stars A multiple vision of IT Security
This book is an excellent example of compilation of dozens of good works on IT Security. The quality of articles and the different points of view whereupon are treated turn to it an essential work. It only has a failure: such amount of information has been packed in only a volume that has forced the publisher to reduce both the font and the thickness of the paper to the maximum. Very bad for that no longer we havetwenty years and in addition we were used to mark the most interesting paragraphs with a pencil.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book content is excellent, but paper quality is worst ever
I am reading the fifth edition of this book. In the earlier editions the book was published in three or four volumes. The fifth editionis a combination of all volumes. So that is good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Volumes vs editions
Some of the reviewers are confusing 'volumes' with editions. Each edition of this book contains several volumes. Each volume contains new papers, adding them to the current edition of the ISMH.

2-0 out of 5 stars Alot of good information, but not what it should be
My heart goes out to Ben Matthews (below) who had this thing for a level 4700. That's nuts. I had this book for a level 222 and it was a complete joke. There's a lot of good information and stories about what makes a good e-commerce site, I'll give it that. But there's nothing in here to really give you an edge as far as this stuff goes. The entire point of this book can be summed up in this statement:
2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but an e-commerce glossary...
This book serves as an introduction to e-commerce terms and principles. To me, it reads like a shallow glossary of a large number of e-commerce terms.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Ecommerce Textbook
I teach ecommerce at the undergraduate level. I plan to use this book as the backbone for the class. The objectives are tied to the e-Biz+ certification exam from CompTIA, which is a nice feature since CompTIA does a bang-up job on researching the skills needed for entry level employment.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely for beginners.
I'm giving it 3 stars because it is helpful, but the audience needs to be clearly defined on the cover. This isn't for any intermediate or advanced users of eBay.This is for the grandma that just got a computer.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent basic guide to eBay
This is an excellent basic guide to buying and selling on eBay. Griff peppers his instruction with plenty of personal stories and anecdotes, has screen shots of what you'll see online in case you're not sitting at your computer while you're reading, and tells you probably more than you need to know to use eBay.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!
I read this book and it told me a lot about how to buy and sell items on eBay. It is a great help for anyone. It is very detailed on certain points like: Buy It Now, Bidding, Paying for Items, and many other points. I would definitely reccommend having a copy of this book on hand if you are going to buy or sell items on eBay. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
It is unfortunte that I couldn't rate it lower than a one. I had to buy this for a class. It is poorly written and organized and along with the standard test that comes with this course, the whole thing is a tortured exercise in semantics.Plus, For starters on pg 54 there are "WBS Definitions" and finally on page 58 one is told that WBS means Work Breakdown Structure. It would appear that this author's native language is not English and unfortunately, I haven't yet made sense out of the babble.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the essence of Project Managment
Mr. Gopal Kapur has captured the essence of project management in this book. The Project Process Architecture (PPA) supplies proven techniques backed up with practical tools and provides the foundation for successful project management. However, this work goes beyond the "mechanics" of project management and discusses the topics typically not covered in project management material and seminars. These topics include the importance of business and IT leadership, why clear communication is vital to project success, understanding individual and team dynamics, why it is vital to have a disciplined and consistent project management approach, and why a project can't succeed without clear project ownership and strong sponsorship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
This book breaks down project management very well.It is an easy read and cites great case studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good IT Project Management Book
This is a good book for learning IT project management. The chapters are well written and explained. The book is easy to read and easy to follow. I used this book in Spring 2004 as class textbook while taking my graduate courses and I also had the privilege to have the author as the person who taught the class. It is a pretty good book that I kept and use it as reference. The part of the book that I like the most is the explanation of resistances to change in the workplace and how to manage them.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with MS Project 2002 Trial Version
If you are learning MS Project, you need to get the newest version 2002.MS has been updating it almost weekly, difficult to keep up.The theoretical foundation of this book is sound. Chap. 8 Managing Project Risk is very useful. It can be used as a graduate level course, 30 - 36 hours. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent career guide!!!
When I was offered the job of CIO, I only had 1 week to prepare for the interview.I purchased this book immediately based on the exerpts that I read on line. What an amazing and helpful book.Mr. Smith's pointers and recommendations helped me tremendously! It assisted in preparing me for the interview and even though I am now working as a CIO I still review it.I liked his points on the IT Governance Structure document - somthing that I plan to put in place here, I also read with interest his tips on the first 100 days in the job.I also like the statistical data that were included in each chapter. What was also particularly helpful were his personal experience.I like how the book gives direction to aspiring CIOs and new CIOs.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More credible than informative
The information contained in this book are not exactly revolutionary. You want to be a CIO? Get an MBA from top notch school, be technically proficient, get project management experience, work on large scale projects, get experience with large scale budgets, and work on your soft (communication and interpsonal) skills.
4-0 out of 5 stars Upcoming CIO
My first CIO book and this made me more excited to get my first CIOposition. Good format, excellent recommendations and in-depth knowledge of the CIO position.

Also, as it usually happens with business textbook it lacked "When good idea goes bad" examples. But, I guess, management never makes any mistakes... that's what you have to understand in it. ...
