3-0 out of 5 stars A very good attempt to intewave IT startegy to Business
In my 23 years of experience of working in IT, I would say that this is the first book on IT strategy that attempts to make IT a PART of startegic intent of the business.1-0 out of 5 stars Wordy hogwash
An inane pill to swallow. The book says little in its 341 pages.I'll never get that time back.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good toolkit for IT Strategic Planning
This book present Strategic Planning as a combination of cartesian analysis and art.The author draw a lot on the principles found in classics in the area, namely the Art of War from Sun Tzu and The Prince from Machiavelli.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read !
This book has several notable strengths. Author Mark Kobayashi-Hillary, an outsourcing consultant, combines detailed information about India with in-depth knowledge of outsourcing markets, processes and methods. He provides an overview of India and a profile of India's outsourcing industry, including the major players in a rapidly changing marketplace, important aspects of cultural awareness and thoughts on how to organize your outsourcing endeavor, including vendor selection and contract provisions. At times, the organizational structure of the book is somewhat disorienting, shifting focus from travel guide to outsourcing primer to nuts-and-bolts analysis of India's outsourcing market and how best to capitalize on it. Occasionally the narrative flow is a bit mechanical, but who really cares? If your company is considering or already has a major investment in offshore outsourcing in India, this book is an outright must read. Despite its structural flaws, we strongly recommend its authoritative blend of practical business, legal and cultural advice.

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Sad but true.I read this book when we were first considering outsourcing. It sounded like a dream come true - cheap, compliant labor at bargain rates. So we jumped in, outsourcing our IT dept. and even some of our legal services.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outsourcing to India
I have read other books on this subject which are boring and content-free.This book is very readable and gives an excellent insight into where and how to take your BPO project, the issues you are likely to encounter, and into building the relationships to make an outsource project work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Business MIS not ethics
This text is highly reductionist. From the beginning his only concern is argue for protecting from monitary loss (he describes unethical behavior based on how much money you loose). In summary this is a book designed to develop a background for understanding why we have corporate security on IT/IS systems. The book really should be titled "MIS and Corporate Security the Current Social Backdrop".Read more

Timely!Fundraising on the internet is the next level of fundraising for non-profits, and this is an excellent way to get started!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and reliable
This collaborative effort is well-written, fast-paced, and extremely up-to-date. Each chapter is on a different aspect of Internet fundraising, written by a different author. Speaking from personal experience, this book has been extremely possible in our own business of helping nonprofits raise funds online. We recommend it to any nonprofit who wants to take advantage of the net.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Instructional Designers
Designing World-Class e-Learning did not meet my expectations-so by Schank's definition, I must have learned something. As an instructional designer, I found it infuriating.Schank preaches, full-pulpit preaching, his perspective on effective training solution by bashing public education, university education, professional trainers, and professional instructional designers. What Schank does do is try and sell you his team providing eLearning solutions for your business. These solutions are excellent approaches for performance improvement, as seen in the case studies. They are ideal for uptraining.I am not yet convinced it is the right approach for new hire training. He also compares the "right" way of learning to that of a child, having expectations fail and changing one's mental models as a consequence.Since adults have some learning skills developed beyond that of a pre-schooler, I felt this was a limited basis of argument.Schank tailors the process, including evaluation, to his premise of what is "good" training.Unfortunately, he does not provide the tools or explanations so that the reader can also put into practice these ideas.Dr. Schank, my one question is, "If Learning by Doing is such an intrinsic necessity for effective learning, why does the reader never have any engaging opportunity to do something?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!
E-learning expert Roger C. Schank describes the secrets of a good e-learning program. He emphasizes using e-learning to train in-house employees, although his methods could work in any setting. Schank clearly establishes the basic principle that makes e-learning work: learning by doing. He outlines methods using scenarios and simulations that permit the learner to put new ideas into practice immediately. He's a little too fond of failing and trying over as a learning method, when one might learn just as well by studying others' failures and successes. However, he supports his approach with education-based examples that demonstrate how children learn, along with an inside look at IBM and GE programs. Visuals in the book show the computer screen in a teaching mode as displayed to the user, so you see how your e-learning material should look, whether on a Web site or on a local intranet. We from getAbstract recommend this solid hands-on instruction manual for training and development managers, and for those who are building e-learning experiences.

3-0 out of 5 stars Modern Alchemy That Produces Some Gold
For masochists who can only learn from their own mistakes, this book provides the best way to teach them.Roger Schank's methods create temporary results that can help people react well in a situation but can limit a persons ability to think ahead avoid problems and communicate issues and solutions appropriately.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too old fashioned
This book provides an interesting framework but lacks the modern thinking of the Third Wave by Smith and Fingar and contains more of the old Business Process Reengineering stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting the Business Value from BPM
As a Trainer and Consultant in the Business process space it is important to read as widely as possible. This can often be a chore, but in the case of this book it was a real pleasure. Roger really focusses in on getting the Business Architecture right first and then drilling down into process. As with so many books this too can be viewed as several books in one. The first 1/3 or so is great reading for any manager involved in helping their organization move to being process based. The framework suggested is readily useable by all organizations. then the book does get a little more technical and might lose the business readers, but provides valuable resource and insight for analysts involved in process improvement.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Business Process Management toolkit must have.
Rogers new book is notable for a number of reasons. It presents the subject of Business Process Management with a practical 'can do' approach that will appeal to organisation leaders and practitioners alike. It's direct style is accessible and provides a framework which leads both the reader and the BPM implementer through a tried and tested approach harnessing people, process and technology.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
The data itself is fine.It does explain the information in an understandable way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough treatment of Systems Analysis...
This summer, I took a class in which we read this entire book. Yes, all 600+ pages of text (thankfully we weren't tested on the index). This HUGE book presents a very thorough treament of the Systems Development Life Cycle and the profession of Systems Analysis. From Project Planning to System Maintenance, hardly a detail gets shunned.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good S.A.D Book
I used this book to learn system analysis and design while taking graduate course. The book is well-written and the layout is pretty good. The authors broke down the information in such way you can understand easily. The book also has some exercises that help you practice what you learn. I kept the book and plan to use it a reference. I will recommend it if you are serious about learning System Analysis and Design.

3-0 out of 5 stars Practical, but a little too many HR/Legal warnings for me
This book is brief and practical.I would call it Behavioral Interviewing 101 ... or maybe better ... for K-5th grade. It's a little too basic and it comes from the perspective that the reader knows nothing about interviewing, including some very basic legal snafus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers and Details - not just concepts
Terry has another winner here.He continues his style of real world ideas and detailed recommendations. The ton of actual interview questionsincluded will be a reminder for experienced interviewers and a"bible" for new comers to the activity.Selecting the rightfolks is critical to organizational success. This book is critical forthat selection process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sound/unque methodology for interviewing applicants.
This book presents a unique way to set up the interview process. By following the steps outlined in this book anyone in the organization caninterview for any open position. Of special note, the book ends with 200behavior based interview questions that you can use immediately. I highlyrecommend this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "Leading by Principle" Worthwhile Reading
Louis V. Gerstner, Jr.'s WHO SAYS ELEPHANTS CAN'T DANCE? is Gerstner's account of how he managed the turnaround of ailing computer mainframe giant IBM during his years as CEO (1993-2002).The book is at its best when Gerstner gives his personal account of his first experiences with Big Blue. For me, though, the details of the IBM revival are less captivating, and my interest began to flag about halfway through the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good insights but falls way short of greatness
Gerstner had a big constraint while writing this book - he was writing for a general audience who may not have the inclination to know every single thing he did at IBM. Even after accounting for this, it is particularly disappointing that the book completely glosses over the real details surrounding the decisions that turned around the company. As he himself says, hard and tedious data crunching coupled with solid analysis is the basis of any decision and while the general public need not know the intricacies of every single thing, it is sad that he did not include a single case-study end-to-end.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice introductary read.
I'm going to be an intern in IBM starting June and I was told to read this book as an introduction to what Gerstner did with IBM.Quite honestly, all I knew of Gerstner was the simple fact that he turned around an ailing IBM and made it into the company it is today. This book certainly gave me more insight into the workings of the company and the man who changed the way it worked.

Rarely have I read a book that so clearly reflects the author's obvious knowledge, understanding and personal hands-on experience in the subject of which he writes. What I found particularly refreshing is that Mr. Sennewald, unlike so many other authors of professional publications, succeeded in effectively conveying his messages in simple yet precise English.Read it once and you understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful for enterprise securty. Not a techie cookbook.
This is a particularly interesting book in that it proposes an approach to developing security architectures that are aligned with Business Needs. Most of the other literature that I have seen in this field seems to throw itself into technical detail and try to be a "cookbook" for techies. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 99% Novel, 1% TOC
Necessary But Not Sufficient can be boiled down to three points:
2-0 out of 5 stars Worst of the TOC Novels
This book has very little new material from previous TOC books. It doesn't lead the reader as well as The Goal or It's Not Luck.In short it is a "Rah-Rah" book telling the reader how great TOC is without giving much detail and in the context of a novel that doesn't create a great amount of character sympathy.I really don't understand how a man as brilliant as Goldratt could have written this.Get The Goal, It's Not Luck, and the appropriate textbook(s) to implement TOC in your business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Student's point of View
Im a student at Tec de Monterrey, in Mexico City. Ive been assigned to read The Goal, it wasnt luck and this necessary but not suficient. I have to say that when i read the goald and its second part i really loved the book. I was introduced to this concepts like DBR and inventory management. While i was reading necessary... i thought, this is by far the worst book written by this author (also read the race). Read more
