5-0 out of 5 stars Got Mathematica?Buy This Book NOW!
The positive reviews were right on the money, this book is the best!It allowed me to start using Mathematica with ease, compared to the many hours of past frustration while working on optimizations.I fought endlessly, struggling to decipher the software's baroque navigation, cryptic errors, hostility to the user which borders on abuse - but now Mathematica and I are becoming great friends thanks to Heikki Ruskeepaa's wonderful tome.THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS BOOK!!!5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great Mathematica Textbook
While it is unlikely that there is a pure Mathematica course anywhere, the textbook for it already exists!5-0 out of 5 stars Solutions
To solve practical problems in Mathematica the navigator is very usefull. If you want to go deeper,"modeling nature" by Gaylord and Nishidate is a usefull guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeding expectations
Michael Trott's GuideBooks are an invaluable reference for the serious Mathematica programmer. The unsurpassed symbolic computation engine, superior programming paradigms, lightning-fast numerics, and state-of-the-art visualization can justly be considered four of the main pillars of the Mathematica system, and Michael Trott, himself a well-established and renowed expert programmer at Wolfram Research, provides the most in-depth coverage available in these areas. Unlike the contents normally to be found in a numerics book, this numerics GuideBook includes several methods and principles from other fields of mathematics and programming. This GuideBook is truly astonishing in terms of its breadth. The material is highly relevant for the ambitious numerics programmer, and the writing style is very readable, fluent, and consistent. The structure of the material is logical and break-free, and the examples are very well-chosen.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
This is a very good book in it's subject. The examples taken from Quantum Mechanics ,Fractals and General Relativity are quite impressive. But I would expect even more problems taken from the field of Electrodynamics.I think that this book is a"must have" for anyone who's interesting in computational methods for solving basic problems of theoretical physics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tutorial for Beginner/Intermediate
If you learn by example rather than by formalism, get this book. This presents the material in a logical framework with LOTS OF EXAMPLES. A companion volume is "The Mathematica Handbook", also by the same two writers. I used these books extensively in grad school. I remember standing in the university bookstore for 30 min comparing the handful of books available on Mathematica and these two books won out then and now still cover the fundamentals well. I still use them in my work today.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Mathematica book I've seen
The thing that makes this book great is that it lives up to its title and actually demonstrates practical approaches to using Mathematica. It covers the topics I've seen in other books and many that I haven't seen in other books like optimization and file IO.5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the first book and elevates learning of Mathematica
Nancy and Colin have brought forward a Mathematica text of exceptional ease in learning. This text is current and has the same easy flow of information that has become the hallmark of this duo. It is well writtenfor a self learning experience or can be adopted to a class setting. Ofspecial note is the presentation of programming techniques, the book startswith the basics and continues to build the readers ability with Mathematicaprogramming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. A must have.
As a mathematical hobbyist, I love Mathematica(TM). Also, I love the Lisp programming language. This book, at last, opened my eyes. Now, after some years, I finally can say what "programming Mathematica" is. If you really need to learn to programming in Mathematica, this book is for you. A big thanks to the Authors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Omissions
Please note that the book does NOT cover Object Oriented programming as stated on this page in the description - in fact OO is not even in the index.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 3rd Ed.is based on Mathematica 5.1
This book is an excellent introduction to Mathematica. It is based on Mathematica 5.1 and hence bring the 2nd Ed. based on Mathematica 2.2 up to date to the most recent version of this software package. The book covers all aspects of programming functionalities available in Mathematica: procedural, functional, recursive, rule-based, and object-oriented. There are ample examples in science and mathematics as well as devising one's own software packages. The emphasis of the book is on the fundamental programming concepts. While there are examples of complete packages that solve specific problems more emphasis in this direction would even further strengthen the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a perfect example of "literate programming"
I read 2nd edition of the book. "Programming in Mathematica" (PIM) is certainly a classic work (in programming style) for writing Mathematica packages. I also think it as a perfect example of literate programming in Mathematica, if you are trying literate programming in Mathematica.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sample Programs are Available
One reviewer said that the sample programs were not available as promised on the publishers website. That may have been true when that review was written, however, I just checked and the sample programs are now there for download on the publisher's website. In fact, I just downloaded them and they are fully functioning Mathematica notebooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
I purchased this book in desperation while taking a probability class with another textbook, and it has been a lucky find, indeed. The mathematics are limited mostly to basic calculus but provide sufficient rigor to satisfy the interests of mathematically-minded readers. The concepts appeal intuitively to the non-statistician scientist or graduate student as well as the mathematician. This book is easy to read and understand. Mathematica enhances the text and aids the homework, but unlike the reviewer below, I believe this book is valuable even without Mathematica. After reading this book I was able to make sense of the assigned probability text and began to enjoy the course. Introduction to Probability with Mathematica was well worth the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A creative and refreshing approach...
I considered this book for a course that I thought I was going to teach. The course never got offered but I did discover this neat book in the process. Being a Mathematica fan, I was very happy to see a probability book completely based on Mathematica. In fact, the book itself is a set of Mathematica notebooks, making it very easy for the readers to experiment with the introduced topics. The explanations are clear and are accompanied with neat examples showing real-world uses of probability.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to the efficient use of Mathematica
Iin terms of speed and functionality, the program Mathematica is the most amazing program I have ever used. It is an indispensable tool for research in many areas of the sciences and mathematics. From the evaluation of mathematical formulas to the graphing of three-dimensional data over time, it can handle almost anything that you need to process or analyze. Surprisingly user-friendly for such a capable program, it takes very little time for even a novice to put it to productive use. However, with all that capability there is a problem with the sheer number and detail of the options, which is why the documentation is so critical. While there is extensive online documentation with Mathematica that is easy to use, there is still a need for the documentation in physical form.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent intro to Mathmatica
This is typical of the Schaum's outline series: a decent, no-frills introduction to Mathematica at a reasonable price. When you look at the other books on the subject, they cost 8 to 10 times as much. Get this one, work hard and save some long bucks. The others may be pretty but are they really worth it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Mathematica.
This is an excellent introductory book on Mathematica. If you need to learn some basic features of this language, it is the best tool.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Mathematica
If you're never used Mathematica before, this book is a good starting point. The Mathematica book (which is the same as the electronic help files from Mathematica) is certainly a better reference as far as depth and content is concerned. Therefore, if you're looking for a reference that will give you information on the tools from the software, you're better off with the help files. If you want to learn how to use the software itself and make some sense out of the otherwise akward user interface, then this book is definitely for you. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A incomplete work
It's rather frustrated to see the book with this title only values plain call options. It didn't give a general approach for valuing general payoff securities. The transform formula only works for plain call option, and even this need to use put call parity once to convert the payoff function so that the fundamental solution can apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just stochastic volatility
Other reviewers discussed the virtues of this book as a first book devoted to option pricing under stochastic volatility. And, indeed, the book provides a detailed exposition of stochastic volatility models. What I wantto add to the other reviews is that this book is more than just aboutstochastic volatility. The book gives a careful exposition of theapplication of the two important mathematical methods to contingent claimvaluation: the method of integral transforms (Fourier and Laplace inparticular) and the method of eigenfunction expansions. Long the core toolsin mathematical physics, these important methods now find more and moreapplications in financial economics. They can be applied to option pricing, interest rate modeling, and, more generally, any problems in economics thatinvolve calculations with diffusion processes. The author clearlydemonstrates how to use these powerful tools for calculations in finance.Researchers working in the area of derivatives pricing, both in academiaand on the Street, will not want to miss this point.

3-0 out of 5 stars the first book on stochastic volatility models
The Black-Scholes model for the pricing of derivatives whilst very effective is also known to be imperfect. A number of ways of generalizing the model to cope with these imperfections have been developed. One popularmethod is to allow the instantaneous volatility parameter to follow astochastic process. This allows the possibility of observed volatilities inthe market to evolve from day to day and also to produce market type"smiles" that is graphs of volatility against strike which aresmile shaped rather than the horizontal line implied by the Black-Scholesmodel.
