An embarrassment to the fine Schaum's outline series
I was very disappointed in both the layout and content of this Schaum's outline. Unlike most other Schaum's outlines that are well-written by authors who appear to know their subject matter, this one seems to be written by someone who does not understand what a student is looking for in an outline on computer networking and doesn't seem to know the subject matter that well either.
Not the right author
I have to agree with another reviewer that person who wrote this book does not seem to have a deep knowledge of the subject. I picked up this book in order to study for GRE CS subject test and it was just a general refresher and was not complete so i had to use my networking book from college. If you just want a quick rewiew of some concepts, then it is a right book for you, but anything semi complex is not covered or covered with not enough datails in this book.

look at the cover before you buy it
The cover of this book clearly states that it is intended for "Solving Business Problems - from Application Development to Decision Support". The back of the book states that it is a "practical, accessible guide for business executives..." Do not waste your time
This is one of the worst books on data mining available. It is not intended for marketers nor researchers. You don't need any knowledge about neural networks and -even worse- you will not learn anything. It only talksabout the IBM Neural Network Utility. If you are a business man look for'Data Mining Techniques' from Michael J. A. Berry If you are a math manlooking for a good text on neural networks see 'Neural Networks' from SimonHaykin.

A book long magazine article: no code but no substance
The Amazon.com review of this book (see above) says "are you personally more interested in strategic applications and general overviews than mind-numbing equations and printouts of code?". A good generaloverview does not have to contain printouts of code and mind-numbingequations, but it does have more substance and conceptual information thanthis "business week" like book long article. That's the point.The contents of this book would be fine for a business magazine article butnot for a book. Too much prose and at the end not even an intelligentreader can make sense of what is really feasible with this technology andhow it can be approached. There are much better general data mining booksin the market, books without codes and weird equations for the mathematicalilliterate, but with strong conceptual explanations and fundations. Not helpful at all
I received this book as a free offer from McGraw-Hill a few years ago when I was new to networking.I learned very little from it.I am so glad I only paid for the shipping and handling.If you are new to the field andneed a good study guide, don't buy this one!

A rip off
This book doesn't even deserve 1 star at all. What a waste of money and paper. The authors have no clue on what it is meant by "Study Guide"

trust your common sense instead. Save your Money!
I could neither read the book cover to cover nor expect anyone will accomplish this with sanity.This book is written as a text book that student will buy class notes instead or a self-promotion material whichleft untouched;Almost all supporting material are assembled from varioussources. The author claim it's done to protect its customer's privacy butthe result does not make sense and appear to be too much artificial.Besides the lack of "real" hard evidence to demostrate theauthor's theory, there are too many opinions from places to places.Wedon't assume a cause of an event by collecting opinions from a group ofpeople. Only an controled experient can proof a theory.Over all the bookis poorly written. However, it serve as a good weapon through corporateladder. It can be uses in two way. Pick it up and hit someone. Its hardcover and weight can result a deadly attack. Otherwise one can pick uptechnical terms through out the book and make anyone in front of you shutup. I bought this book as a suppliment to Software Engineering Economics, by Boehm, because of it's later publication date.However, once I read the book I believe that the Boehm should be a suppliment to this work.Beforereading this book I was unfamiliar with function points.We are nowimplementing them in our company. If this book does not bridge the gapbetween technical and management it goes a long way toward that end.

Excelent Book on IS-41
I just read the authentication chapter, and I just left behind all my doubts about authentication. Anyway not just the Auth Chapter is excelent but the whole book.

The book to get for IS-41
Highly recommended book for IS-41... the networking standard between AMPS, TDMA and CDMA switches, HLR and VLRs.I'm relieved there's a book out there which explains everything in layman's term, yet goes through enoughdetails to give a great grasp of the important concepts of mobilenetworking. Great Guide But A Repeat Of Meyers' Other Book
This is an excellent guide if you want to pass the A+ DOS/Windows exam, but it is basically just the DOS/Windows' chapters excerpted from Meyers' "All-in-One A+ Certification Guide", so if you have the one, youwon't need the other. personally, I recommend the All-in-One book as itcontains all the information needed to pass bothe Core and DOS/Windowsexams. This book also contains no practice questions, which is a big minus.Still, Meyers' explains things so well, that you are bound to pass the examwith this book. As usual, he goes into much more detail than you willactually need for the exam, but it does often come in handy.

This book reigns!
I aced the DOS/Windows test after using this book for about 2 weeks.I would rate it a 5 if only there were a few practice questions.If you read this book, the test will look familiar to you!

Wonderful help in getting A+ certified, but...
One thing that kept me from studying for the A+ test was that most books weighed in at around 1000+ pages and were very poorly organized. This book was great in defining what was actually needed to study for the exam andfocused just on the operating systems.One thing to point out is that ifyou take the operating systems portion of the A+ test in June 2000 orlater, it will not contain the Win 3.x section and will be adding Linux,Win 98, and NT, instead. If you take the test before June then this is awonderfully written guide and should be all you need to pass--I passed. Full of Mistakes and Poorly Organized
After having taken a course, then later helped teach a course (University level) using this book I found that it is full of mistakes and difficult to read.Not recommended as an introductory text.The book may serve acceptably as an reference, but it is not a great teaching tool. Good book detailing realitites and possibilities of the net!
If you've been awake and actively using the net over the past few years, you probably already know just about everything in this book.Martin has very good insight into what the web can really be...beyond all the technology hoopla, building virtual communities, supplying appropriate content, making a corporate web site that is actually useful to consumers, etc..A GREAT read for those trying to make sense of the web, understand how people use the web, and see how other companies have created successful enterprises or applications integrating the internet.The copy I got had some duplicate/missing pages in the introduction of the book.

An important analysis of the state of business on the Intern
This book is a "must read" for all company owners and managers involved in the corporate planning process. The Digital Estate digs into the successes and failures of pure on-line businesses and electronic efforts of other companies to define the principals of doing business today. This is not a "technology book" and is not targeted for "net heads" or persons already in the Internet business. It is a business book for executives that contrasts the "oldway" and new methods that are transforming business thinking. Very good book...
It is obvious that previous reviews have been made twice to McGraw-Hill or Darren Spohn
This is one of the worst books I've read!It was poorly written, (lot's of type-o's).I also did not like the authors writting style.(he jumps around topics too much).I have read a lot of IT Books this last year and a half(over 50) and this is the first book I came across that I had to write a review about.I caution you if thinking about buying this book....

Obsolete ? 1998 Edition
This book is a mediocre test prep book churned out for the 1998 test objectives. Disappointing, just disappointing
According to the publishers of this book, they had hoped to publish a cheaper, more efficient guide to the A+ exams, but I think that they cut out too much, and slapped too many things together haphazardly. Mediocre
This book was okay - the format of the questions is a bit different from other books, and consequently, the exam. Good for dummys
Good to have a general idea and litle know how of the diferents network Standarts.Easy reading and very well explained, but who expected to see allthe standards Specification's it's not there, try ITU-T papers.

Mostly competent but pretty confusing
Black does a reasonably good job of selecting relevant content, butreading this book is difficult.There are numerous typos - some of them incrucial diagrams - and the writing style is dense and unclear, oftenleaving you pondering a sentence for hours because you feel that it'simportant but have no idea what it means.A much better resource for thissubject is Stallings, "SNMP, SNMPv2, and CMIP: The Practical Guide toNetwork-Management Standards".Unfortunately, that is out of print,and I don't know if Stallings has superseded it with any of his numerousother books. ... Best book I ever bought!
I had always wanted to learn design but had no time or money to invest in classes etc. All I had was an iMac and "Teach yourself Quark Express". Although some reviews don't praise this book, I found it to be informative enough to learn my way around the Quark interface and start designing pages. Because large manuals overwhelmed me- not to mention my optimism about breaking into design was not that high, I settled for this cheap little book. Well I'm happy to say that within about six weeks I landed my first design job in NYC and have since mastered Quark and became very skilled in Photoshop and Illustrator. Just 11 months after reading this book I am now a very experienced and employable designer. I have taken many courses in design since then-but my gratitude goes to the author of "Teach Yourself QuarkXPress"- I never could have done it without this book. I'd like to see the great works of artfrom those "negative" people who suggest "Quark for Dummies". This is the only Quark book I've ever owned and believe me, anything a certified Quark instructor has ever showed me I had already learned in this book. Maybe the "Dummies" should read it again.This is a real review from a real designer.

Good for real beginners; some flaws
This is a superb resource if you have virtually no knowledge of desktop publishing whatsoever, and you wish to learn the basics ofQuark Xpress. However, if you already have a basic knowledge of some other desktop publisher, and you wish to learn Quark Express fairly well so that you can get a job in the publishing industry where it is used, this book will only provide limited help. While this book does contain some information which may be useful to, say, comatose goats trying to break into a career in desktop publishing, this book provides no easy way of accessing it.The index and glossary arewoefully useless and the book is disorganized and nauseatingly simplistic.If one of your coffee table's legs is a little bit too high, this book mayjust be perfect for you. Good Resource for Lotus Exams
I purchased this book to help me prepare for the AD1, SA1 and SA2 exams.I found the material in this book to be basic but very informative.The chapters are fairly easy to read. Each chapter has study questions to help you prepare for the exams.I can't say this is a 100% comprehense text, but it does hit all of the high points and gives excellent test-taking tips.I also used the cd-rom to study for the tests.I found them to be very helpful also.I would recommend this text to anyone who is studying for the Lotus exams.

Is a fine R4 review , just don't count on it for everything.
People here seem to get confused on Exam prep versus learning Notes.Asan ex-Loti (worked for Lotus), I can vouch for the book and state that itwill HELP you to pass the exams mentioned--particularly the AD1, and SA1(and really folks, there is NO easier Lotus test then SA1). This book was critical to obtaining my CLP
I passed AD1, AD2 and SA1 each on the first try using this book. This book and my prior developing experience helped me pass AD1 and AD2 without any other references or practice tests.Read more
