Somewhat OK for Reference, Bad for Test Preparation
I bought these thinking that Microsoft would be in the best position to write a training kit to prepare for the certification tests, since they are, after all, Microsoft tests.Big mistake.If I hadn't used the Transcender practice tests also, I would have gotten a rude awakening at the test center.The MS books have some decent reference information, but they don't prepare you for the tests.

I bought this new book which I got it for $4 less than any other place including internet and book stores. I received the book on time and as I expected. Started reading and enjoying it...

Use this book along with additional resources
The book is well structured to cover the exam topics. It does, however, omit certain details in some topics which would be unclear from just the book alone if I didn't already know them or didn't find some better explanations elsewhere online. You'll need some additional resource, including .NET class library online reference and online tutorials to fully understand certain topics.

Pretty decent
I've not finished reading this book yet, nor have I completed all exercises. Already having a fair bit of experience with .NET and ASP.NET I can see that this book covers only the basics, though it seems to cover them quite well.I have, however, found a few code errors in the examples, which I feel detracts a fair bit from the overall quality of the book. ... Badly structured and written
I'm an experienced vb6 programmer and looked for a book to help me make the switch. I found this book diving into issues without giving you any prerequisites. I had a hard time understanding where he wants to take me.

Maybe good for exam, but you won't learn .NET or C# here
This book has some highlights, but it is tightly authored to the VS.NET version it comes bundled with. Some folks will find this a bonanza, but that's only if you're willing to rubber-stamp your exam. There's abundance of Wizard code specific to VS.NET 2003 version. I am working with VC# Express 2005 and many of the things are N/A in this environment. ... anyway, I could sort my way out by looking at the samples and learn that what used to be a Control is nothing more than a Class that derives from Controls and some additional boilerplate.

Appalling
I have not yet taken the exam, so I can only tell you about the material covered for it's own value.
Go get another book if you want to pass the exam
This book gets one star because it does not cover the material required to pass the exam.I would have almost failed the exam had I used just this book for my preparation.Luckiliy I have used online questions from one of the web-sited listed on Microsoft's web-site and that helped me to pass the exam.

Pretty Good Book
Not for the light reader, the book has one thousand pages of guidelines, detailed information, hands on labs, review questions and quizzes. The final sections of the book contains a full review, an actual exam and a section on SQL basics. Found the book contained many excellent illustrations which delved into the details of Windows Services, Web Services, COM+, SOAP, Remoting and other distributed topics. Recommended over the 70-320 guide by MS Press, but if you have time. Read that one first followed by this one to "burn in" the subject matter.

Amazing book
Amazing book - you start off scared of new topics, afraid you won't understand - but the book turns it around and just explains everything like it's super easy and natural stuff. Great authors.

Great intro to VB.Net but poor certification prep
If you are new to Visual Basic.Net then this book is great for getting a basic understanding of the language.If you are using it to introduce yourself to the language then I would highly recommend it.However, this book miserably fails its' title in preparing for the 70-306 exam. Frustrating
This book is chalk full of errors.I am not at all convinced that anyone went back through and actually tried to reproduce the examples and assignments found in this book.If you like a challenge and enjoy debugging someone else's code, this is the book for you.If, however, you feel that your time is better spent actually studying for the exam I would skip this book.

This book is alright, but it does not take into consideration all OS's on which the code might be running (xp users beware on the globalization chapter) and some of the end of chapter questions don't even seem to be based on data discussed in the chapter. That all being said, there aren't many other options exam prep books for 70-306 and this one is at least easy to follow along with although I don't think it is in depth enough for the exam. ... Good Resource for XML Editing
I have found "Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft VB.NET" an invaluable tool in XML editor development. It is quite detailed about accessing and manipulating XML data.

Renewed Faith
After attempting to read the MS study guide, I had come to the conclusion that the Microsoft Solutions Framework was just a bunch of UML rebranding, hastily cut and pasted together by lone wolf code hacks with no interest in organized software development.This book has led me to believe that I may be wrong.It IS a bunch of UML rebranding, but MSF still forms a lucid useful framework.
Digital Rights Management - I am not a thief!
Careful about the eBook version of this book. I downloaded it at home, and unbeknownst to me activated it. When I took it to work via USB drive, it complained it was already activated.My workplace proxy firewall won't let me re-activate it.
Good Info but not for Test
Just got back from the test.I failed it.Not because I didn't have the proper knowledge....I was passing every practice test in the book...but because, for whatever reason, this book did not prepare me for the questions actually asked on the test. Due to NDA, I can't get any more specific than that. Very Very confusing book
Sorry for any harsh comments. But the book is so confusing explaining even simple concepts. I got frustrated when he tries to beat around the bush to explain STRONG NAMES.
Good .NET Security book.
This will be the book that you must have if you are a newcomer in .NET Security.The explanations are clear, supported by the author's own experience in the field.Also, the code is easy to follow and straightforward.
I rate the book 5-star without the least hesitation.

The book met the requirements of the course it was being used for... it was how ever a little bit lax on the code portion...when it came to doing the project it left a bit to be desired in clarity of how to build a data base in SQL...

Why can't authors ever flow through a book in an ordely manner?What is the point of jumping from chapter to chapter?For example, many times through out this book references are being made to up coming chapters about specific topics in chapters that don't belong there.Why do you tell the reader about an up coming topic in a chapter that doesn't belong there and then ask a question about it in the chapter test.Why even make a chapter about that specific topic if your going to include it in a chapter that doesn't belong there?Thats a little redundent!!Also the author likes to give you examples on how to do certain things the right way, and then tests you on something he never covered in the chapter.If the topic has nothing to do with the chapter, do not include in the chapter.If you do include it into a chapter in which it doesn' belong, don't include it into the chapter test.How do you expect the reader to completely understand and answer the question if he or she knows nothing about it?Unless, your wanting the reader to stop what there doing, flip to the chapter and read it, then go back to the previous chapter your testing on just for that one little question that doesn't belong.Rediculous!!

Good book but not enough
I just passed my 70-310 test with a score of 820. I used this book to get the basic understanding of what was covered. If you want to pass the ONLY way to go is with the Test King Questions and Answers. Don't waste your money on anything else. You'll thank me for it later. :)

Good enough to pass but...
The practice exam on the cd was terrible and some sections are a bit patchy.If you buy the equivalent book for 70-175 you'll find that about 60% of this book is duplicated in that book. However, this book was my only resource and I passed the exam with just over 780.I think I could have done much better had I bought transcender.

It does the job
I used this book to pass the exam. I scored 957. I did get a few questions in the exam that were either not covered adequately or not at all in this book. But, I do feel that the book did provide a solid resource for the key parts of the exam, i.e. ADO, MTS, COM and n-tier technology. I would only recommend this book to people that have a fairly solid background in VB and want to pass the exam.

This book is definetly not useful for continuing to learn VB.I found it poorly written, boring, with various grammatical mistakes and vague examples that are not very practical.

Great Guide For 70-315
I've been using this book for the last month as my only study resource and I just passed the MCAD 70-315 exam this morning with a 924.Amit Kalani outlines detailed information about each key point on the 70-315 exam and also provides good test preparation tips.The one piece of advice I can give is to go through each of the Step-By-Step exercises.
Great self paced learning
I started using this book with some experience in C# and .NET.I found it easy to read at my own pace - skipping what I understood and getting a clear understanding of what I didn't know.The over arching structure worked well for my learning style.
Great book for 70-315 exam and in general for learning ASP.NET
I used this book to prepare for the 70-315 exam, which I passed with very good marks. In my case it was very extremely useful to cover areas of ASP.NET that I haven't used in my everyday work. In my opinion, either if you have hand-on experience on ASP.NET development, or if you just want to learn, this is a great book. The author is not only knowledgeable on the technical areas, but is also a good teacher.

Yes, the exam covers all the chapters described in the book. So, take your time, do not rush into the end, pay extra careful attention to the details and, certainly, it will be of great help during the test taking. Terrific Book
I guess i'm late, cus microsoft is now phasing out MCSD! Anyway i did both 70-175 and 70-176 yesterday (April 26th, 2004) and i Aced both exams (900 and 814 respectively). I primarily used this book, it covers everything u need to know. The great thing is that Mr. Foxall actually did thesed xams and understands exactly what they're about and as such does an excellent job in presenting the material. The chapter on Package and deployment and COM are the best i've seen yet! THIS BOOK + TEST KING practice questions EQUALS PASS.

Helpful but not "the only thing you will need"
I thought this book really helped me pass 70-305.However, it will probably not be sufficient if you are just beginning with the material or if you are using it as your sole resource.I used it with Self Test Software and I did not have any trouble with the exam.Also, as some of the other reviewers mentioned there are a few mistakes in the book especially with the chapter review questions.However, I still plan to use it to pass 306 and 310.Overall I would give this book a 7 out of 10.

Disappointment for beginners

Good Idea ... bad execution
This book was a great idea in concept but it lacks in in execution.It suffers from poor editing.The examples often lack some critical piece that would make it very difficult for a beginner to complete the excercises and have working examples.

A Joke and ripoff
This is a useless book. It has so many errors that you will have headache. Very poor explanation. Normally MS Press books are good but Microsoft did a very poor job on this. I should use this book in fireplace to get some benifit out of it. I would like to give this book negative star if I can but I cant.

Keeping it Real
Definitely this book contains some useful material. The first chapters make a good impression, but as you go further you start to see that something is wrong. The author was facing an aggressive deadline and did not take into consideration anything. Code samples are full of errors
The authors were apparently faced with an aggressive deadline for this book because it's exceptionally bad, even relative to other MS Press books. Due to the inaccurate writing and poor editing I wasted many late-night hours trying to get the sample code provided for the labs to run properly. Very little of the prescribed code even runs at all, without modification. A valuable book with shortcomings
This is a valuable book, it explained topics which were missing in some other books.In the other hand, the previous reviews did not mention some shortcomings in this book.The OOP part of this book is not good.The language in many parts of this book is ambiguous, it lures people to read these parts again and again, but after that the meaning is still not clear, while this repeated reading of such a big book wastes time.The sample code in this book is not available for download, although they are in the CD, but the CD is made in a mean way that the "copy" function is disabled, so this book is not good for busy people.
