Memory, thinking skills, creativity - great book
Mind Performance Hacks includes the usual fare of all memory books - various memory systems including the Major and Dominic Systems and variations of them.However, these authors go beyond the memory books by including many of the newer concepts in information processing such as mind mapping, dealing with cruft, ways of increasing creativity, capturing creative thoughts and using your creative self to resolve current issues.They also include some neat math tricks and techniques to quickly check the results of calculations for accuracy, estimate square roots, and other quick calculations.Unusual areas include better decision making and communications, bringing clarity to your life by working with emotional problems, and using meditation.And of course they include things to do to exercise your brain and keep it in tip top shape.Mind Performance Hacks: Tips and Tools for Overclocking Your Brain is highly recommended and was well beyond what I had expected from the title.

Excellent, but not for beginners
Understanding the Linux Kernel is an excellent guide for those who have some experience using Linux, and would like to know what's going on under the hood. It's a comprehensive guide that not only describes how Linux boots and initializes itself, and how programs call functions inside the kernel, but actually goes down to the murky depths of interrupts, process switching, inter-process communication, and even memory management down to the level of the 80x86 processor instructions, registers and features (actually if you add it all up, memory management takes up most of the book -- a good thing!). Furthermore there are chapters about essentials such as file systems and device drivers.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you curious about how Linux works and why it is so efficient? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Daniel Plerre Bovet and Marco Cesati, have done an outstanding job of writing a practical book that will help you find your way through the many thousands of lines of code.

Awesome ! Awesome ! book .
This is a really awesome book. In my opinion, nobody to date has explained pointers better than Mr. Daconta. By the time I finished reading the book and doing the exercises, I was really thinking out "pointers" and how they were being represented inside the machine, which is what makes this book great.
Remove thy veil and immerse yourself in the land of pointers
Pointers are by far the most important, and most difficult aspects of C/C++. Most books, however, gloss over the subject and leave the reader desiring more. Daconta understood this and addressed many of the questions in this book. Excellent explanations covered..which are hard to find...
Since I am a programmer and mainly built applications using visual basic, I always had an urge to master c++ due to the power of this language, but pointers were the only hurdle for me to overcome this goal. I always had bad times understanding MFC offered classes and the way whole infrastructure work, coz they play with pointers alot..and after all learning C++ and coding in c++ is not difficult without pointers but the fact is, if someone really wanna code in C++ they better do it efficiently other wise no need to switch, you should remain on ur currently practice language..This book not only taught me what pointers are but really made my mind think and work like a compiler..I really appreciate the author Micheal C Daconta and his team of putting such a masterpiece into existance, with out this book I simply believe one cannot solve the mystery of pointers coz no other stuff is available that is comparable to this book..Read more

Great book
This is really a great book. It's really a must have for people who want to write their own modern virtual machine (like I).
Excellent book
Garbage collection is a very interesting and complicated topic. To understand different garbage collection algorithms, one has to go through various research papers published over last 30 years or read the simplified descriptions presented in Java site and Bill Venners artima.com. This book does an excellent job in putting together all these algorithms in a logical order that gives us a chance to understand the different challenges sceintists and programming language authors faced and how the algorithms evolved over the time. The book starts with basic overview and history of commonly known algorithms: Reference counting, Mark and Sweep, and Copying algorithms. It then elaborates each of these algorithms, enumerates their pros and cons, and presents imporvements done by different researchers. After this, the book moves on to advanced algorithms like Generational algorithm and concurrent mark and sweep algorithm. I recommend this book to anyone interested in garbage collection. I haven't seen any other book on this topic. Even for programmers who mostly don't have to worry about GC as it is "automatically" done, this is a good book to understand and appreciate what goes on behind the scenes. Also, knowledge of the concepts in this book will be invaluable in performance tuning.

Best for Nagios admins who want specific details on plug-ins
I recently received review copies of Pro Nagios 2.0 (PN2) by James Turnbull and Nagios: System and Network Monitoring (NSANM) by Wolfgang Barth.I read PN2 first, then NSANM.Both are excellent books, but I expect potential readers want to know which is best for them.The following is a radical simplification, and I could honestly recommend readers buy either (or both) books.If you are completely new to Nagios and want a very well-organized introduction, I recommend PN2.If you are somewhat familiar with Nagios and want detailed descriptions of a wide variety of Nagios plug-ins, I recommend NSANM.

Detailed description, difficult read but GOOD and new!
This book is difficult to read but is detailed, but many techqniues are new and different. Some of them are similar to compiler optimizations well known but many are new like memory size analysis and data layout technique. So it is interesting and useful for advanced engineers.

It will be of interest to embedded software engineers wanting to program at a higher level and develop skills related to architectures and compilers. Another book that will be helpful
An older book that could be helpful to readers interested in this book is "Inside the C++ Object Model" by Stanley B. Lippman. It was written in 1996. It shows things such as the layout of C++'s organization of (pointers to) virtual and inherited methods.

This book should be made an optional reading for in undergraduate computer science student
I agree with the other reviewers. In general this is good book. It bridges the gaps between many computer science disciplines. Especially OS and programming language. It also touched a little bit on computer architecture and linking process. The text was written in a a very clear way. However, I do have two complains. The author didn't spend enough effort on the relatively more complex and advanced topics. Eg, linking process for C++, advanced topics in memory leakage detection and prevention. On the other hand, author spent too much energy describing linked data structure in terms of serialization. I personally don't think its relevance is higher than the advanced memory leakage issues. For seasoned profressionals, this book can be used to refresh your knowledge. It is a beginner level to intermediate level book.

A little dissapointed
If youhave a previos experience in the field this book doesn't give you examples nor ways to discover how much bandwitdh you're really saving. So don't expect much from this book. If you want to have a general line-up of WEB CACHING, this is your book. It explains why caching is important but no more.
Very approachable
Really enjoyed reading this one as it starts from the basics and then neatly provides a tight overviews of the major areas without miring the reader in logs. Nicely done!

It's just a plain theoretical book about Web Cache
If your planning to buy this book and hoping will help you setup good Web Caching infrastructure like Squid, forget it!!! this will not help you..

Serious mathematics when shuffling cards
I accidentaly discussed the perfect shuffling problem with one of my high-school talented student recently. We found this problem very interesting, and involved many deep thoughts in mathematics. After manytimes of discussions my student wrote a exercise paper about the order ofshuffling . So I'm very glad to found a book totally dedicated to thissmall mathematical gem. This book approaches the complete shuffling in manyways: first in number theory, then groups, then linear and abstract algebraand computer dimamics .Via these chapters readers will find this problem ismuch more deep than he had thought. Although there are many"hard" mathematics in this book, we still havesome"soft" chapters dealing with magic tricks (and it's reallyfun! ). This is a very good introducing book indeed, it covers recreationmathematics and serious mathematics. However, in my opinion, the pace ofthis book seems a bit too fast, for a non-math-major reader, those formulaslook very formidable! ) It could explore those formulas in detail, and itshould have contained some related topics: for example, the prime root innumber theory, the combinatorics facet, etc.

If you like Design Patterns and efficient programming
Certainly a wonderful book coming at a very appropriatetime, when people write more complex code for variousdevices. There is a certain gap in the industry in the embeddedsoftware field, where object oriented techniques and patternsare not always part of the arsenal of the developers. This book successfully bridges this gap and provides many useful examples as well as proofs for the ideas presented there. The requirements for the reader seem to require some C++ (and/or) Java , but all object oriented programmers andeven traditional C users can benefit from it. There is some inclination from the authors to provide more examples from EPOC, rather than more diverse examples but that is not always the case. I recommend the book for the patterns enthusiast as well as the curious software engineer who wants to have a broader vision in his/her software development practices.

Another triumph in practicality for the Pattern paradigm

Developmental history and some examples of Code
This book, is one of the few computer books I have read from cover to cover - code listings are easy to scan/skip, and the book itself is not huge (however the cost seems fairly high for the size).
Lacking substance and focus
I work in a field where memory management is absolutely critical and was greatly looking forward to this book greatly. However it turned out to be a massive disappointment. The title is memory management, algorithms and implementations. However, the algorithms don't even really start until the last third of the book, and when they do, they are overly simple, and barely touch on the theory or critical characteristics behind the algorithms. This book is filled with useless tangents, some of the most random of which involving microkernal versus monolithic kernal, scanning of faces at the Super Bowl, and instructions for setting the 80x line of chips from real to protected mode! This book presents no practically useful algorithms, as all of the handling of cases such as growing the memory block are left as 'excercises for the reader' as are performance improvments even though final performance is essential in order to be able to properly compare and contrast the algorithms. Nuts and Bolts Perspective
While a lot of books on computer memory end up abstracting their discussion somehow, Blunden's book lies at the opposite end of the spectrum. All aspects of computer memory are examined (hardware level, OS level, application level) and in each instance concrete, non-trivial, examples are presented. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is left to the imagination. This book is nothing short of an exhaustive look at memory management. Engineers interested in this traditionally neglected topic should buy this book!Read more

Lots of theoretical material with little practical value.
This book is academic in nature.The material is well structured and explained in the way that is similar to advanced college writings.It gives pretty good overview of the hardware memory organization, principles of operation, and extensive overview of optimization techniques primarily targeted at people looking for general knowledge in that field but without much desire to get into details.Due to the good structural and logical organization this book is a perfect material to base an advanced computer science course on. It contains some valuable insights, but lack the details
This is my first book on efficient programming technique. The book offers brief description on how different kinds of memories are organized (specifically, cache and virtual memory). In addition, it breiflyintroduces data dependencies analysis (which is what I was looking for). Required knowledge for high performance applications
