3-0 out of 5 stars Good but over-rated
Good but it could be much better. The selection of books on this topic is poor to begin with. But this happens to be one of the best in that underserved category.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Approach to Presentations
I ran across this book while researching a college workshop on perfecting presentation, dealing with public speaking and effective use of PowerPoint. As one who has suffered through numerous electronic slides that did little or nothing to augment the speaker's efforts, I was delighted to see this fresh and innovative approach. I believe this process works best, however, when one's speech is primarily persuasive in nature. Although these ideas helped me set up a strong introduction and conclusion, in a recent lecture I resorted to bullet points for the material I felt the students had to master. Perhaps as I get more used to Atkinson's technique, I'll better about using it in lecture. However, the business applications seem quite worthwhile. My students' workshop presentations that used his techniques were highly engaging. I highly recommend this book and the supporting web site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Excel development book to date
The depth of Excel development knowledge of the authors can be readily seen a few pages into the Introduction. If you have been frequent visitors to Excel/VBA programming newsgroups like myself, you will notice immediately that all three authors are well-recognized experts in this domain, and have answered countless tricky questions on the topic of Excel/VBA.In my opinion, the particularly valuable chapters include:

5-0 out of 5 stars Working on your MCSE? Then get this set of books
This was my sole study guide for the MCSE Server 2003 based certification path, and I was not disappointed. The format is clear and easy to read. The books do a fantastic job of outlining WHY you are learning something, not just WHAT you need to know to pass the exam.I think this is what sets MS Press books apart from the competition: the book itself is structured to the best LEARNING format, and NOT to just passing the exam.I came away from these books with a much greater appreciation for Microsoft's Server and AD technologies (I come from a Linux background since 1995 and I'm the first to knock MS), and these books will be on your reference shelf for years to come -- or at least until the next version of Server ships.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done.
I've belonged to the Unix world since 1993, working with low level stuff as kernel, device drivers, virus, assembly, C, etc.. and now I'm trying to learn Windows a bit and have enough conditions to take all tests (290, 291, 293, 294). No problems. This a very good kit about MS Windows 2003, well written, well organized and deserve 5 stars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I would recommend that anyone buying this looks at the publication date as a lot of errata has been corrected in the most recent editions.Orin Thomas has a very useful forum http://www.certtutor.net/

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I took the exam today....and....passed.Phew!This is one VERY tough exam to study for.I spent about 200 hours preparing for this exam. The exam is very broad and very deep.I bought this book and used the Transcender.
4-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable Study Resource
I read this book twice. And I used the MS Press Training Kit Exam Prep application. I studied all 304 questions. I passed the test. So the study guide works. And this was the hardest exam I've taken (I've taken six).
3-0 out of 5 stars I passed and that is the most important thing
Well I just took the exam today and passed (I didn't do exceptionally well but I have the certificate!). My only source was this book. By me passing I guess you can say it did the job for the task at hand. About 11 out of 16 of the chapters in the book are very easy to understand and very helpful and straightforward (minus the typos). However, some of the others, particularly those dealing with diagnostic and management configuration could use some work. My biggest issue with the book is not with how it is written, but the content. There were about 5 questions which I had no clue about and do not remember their content being directly mentioned (if at all) in the book. I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but there is a problem there with either the book's content or the access the authors had of what would be covered on the exam. All in all, I give it a 3 out 5 since I did pass. Although, I did study this book everyday, heavily, for three straight weeks. As for the practice questions, I thought they were ok as well. They helped me learn some things not covered in the book (oddly enough)and were useful to point out important points on specific topics. This isn't the greatest book in the world, but if you know it really well and do al of the examples and labs, you will probably pass. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Credible, but I'll have to see for myself.
The Scrum principle is simple. It starts with some common observations: that projects generally succeed when someone sidesteps the formal process and gets the job done anyway, and that big teams spend more time tripping over each other than typing code. Scrum starts with the radical idea of announcing that we're going to do what we were going to anyway, then mixing in big handfuls of eXtreme Programming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real agile development
It's very hard to part with the practices accepted for generations. Many companies talk about a new, better way of a project planning, developments' ehgagement and other agile techniques. When trying to apply these techniques, these companies immediately hit the wall of a management looking for traditional ways they've been using for life and with a success (at least, in their estimate). This book makes a Scrum approach very clear and very compelling. You can read chapters from this book to your manager (by the way, I'm a manager myself) and move him/her, step-by-step, to the better understanding how a new approach works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Common sense, immediate application.
This book, coupled with Schwaber and Beedle's other Scrum book, are a complimentary package. This book in particular? Common sense.Immediate application.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended to me!
This book was recommended to me through a seminar I attended. It came highly recommended and I have so far found it very useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excel 2003 Bible
Very good source of information.I will most likely buy other books in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I accidently bought it.
I meant to buy a VBA and a formula book, but bought the Bible instead. What the heck I thought, I bought it, so I'll read it.I got the books to learn more about VBA programs because I have no experience. It taught me many many neat things about excel even though I've been using excel for more than 5 years and continually show my coworkers how to do their work faster and better in Excel. Now I've been showing people about named ranges and arrays.Oh about that formula book, I haven't even touched it because this was the one I really needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good kit
I've been working with SQL2000 for a few years (but no MS Cert), but really interested in getting my MSTS cert in SQL2005. I've started this kit/book, and so far seems to be a pretty good system overall. Good hands-on excercises, and if you have the resources to do so, be sure to set up a good test/play system to work with during this course. I don't really care for the practice test software that is in this kit (and no, not just because I missed a couple questions!), and have always used Transcender exams for material like this. Just seems a little awkward, and even though I've tried a couple of times, I've found it difficult to test just on certain subjects, such as Chapters 1 & 3 for example. The software would generate a test with a few items covered in later material - - but then again, this testing software was new to me. With that said, I'll will probably get the Transcender to suppliment this kit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for reference and for the exam
This is one of the best Microsoft Press Training kits that I have seen. It has good overall coverage of the administrative features of SQL Server 2005 in addition to covering the exam objectives. It also has some useful dynamic management view (DMV) queries. It has a good lesson on how table partitioning works, which is very useful. Overall, a very valuable book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Taking the test which this study guide is focus to is a very important step before give any content's feedback (i'm still preparing myself for the test) But i will give my 1st impression about the book anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource that is missing information
While the content that is coveredin the book is covered in very good detail there are gaps between what is tested on (based on the Measure Up practice tests on the compainion CD) and what is covered in the book. This book does not adequately cover IIS (no mentions of virtual directories for example), does not cover CHAP, MS-CHAP, EAP security. Very important details on how to use Sysprep need to be added (How to add additional drivers to sysprep images, building a single image for use on varied hardware).
5-0 out of 5 stars In depth and easy to read
This book is excellent. While I am pretty well versed in XP, this book is filling in the blanks nicely. The accompanying CD has a PDF of the book and some excellent multimedia presentation files on various subjects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Substance and Fluff
This book really does cover the most important topics in substantial detail. It's well worth the money in terms of enabling one to prepare for the exam.Just the same, it can put me to sleep like almost no other book - not because the technology is not interesting - but because it reads too much like a technical document with paragraph upon paragraph of hyper-specific, redundant detail such as: review the following questions, if you have difficulty answering them, go back and review this material until you feel comfortable with it, blah blah blah, zzz. This kind of content gets repeated in every section verbatim.Yuck!Just cut out the fat, and we would have at least a good three hundred pages less of fluff.Otherwise, well worth the money. ... Editorial Review

Just about every C programmer I respect learned C from this book. Unlike many of the 1,000 page doorstops stuffed with CD-ROMs that have become popular, this volume is concise and powerful (if somewhat dangerous) -- like C itself. And it was written by Kernighan himself. Need we say more? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book but not for beginners
Long ago this book was required in one of my undergraduate classes. At that time, I really could not find it easy therefore put it aside and used other books for the class. It seemed hard at that point. Many years later I bought and used the C Primer Plus book ofStephen Prata which is an excellent book for beginning C. Later, I picked up this book from my library and looked at it, it seemed rather understandable and very good. I think this book is very good but beginner might find it hard to follow. I suggest you start with other books (I suggest C Primer Plus) and then come to this. It will be very beneficial that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all time greats
For learning C programming, this book is the gold standard. It is unpretentious and to the point, assuming that you have the general concept of what it means to program a computer and want to learn the C language. It is gentle, but not touchy-feely, and guides you through what you need to know.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best book but not for beginners
Authored by the guy who invented the C language and the first edition of the book being the known standard for C for over a decade, this book is one of those unique books that is a must read if you want to learn how to program. Early on in the book the authors say that this book is not for a beginner programmer, so if you are a newbie in programming please pick up a different book before diving into this one. This book is also refereed to as the K&R C and is the bible for the C programming language. The text has a simple structure as well as style from the beginning it follows the same ideas of Unix as well as the C language (they invented Unix as well as C). The author defiantly knows the language although I did notice that some of the ideas were not clearly presented on some occasions. All the programs in the book compile perfectly and there are questions asked pertaining to the chapter and section. One of the downsides with all the books I read on C so far is that they do not give you the complete answers to the questions. This one is no different as there is no answers to the questions asked in the book ( you could buy the The C Answer Book: Solutions to the Exercises in the C Programming Language to actually find the answers). One issue was that the book assumes too much as is not a tutorial style book as other books. The book is also not up to date with the standards (after all the 2nd edition was published in 1988 well before the C99) so a new edition must come sooner or latter. I have read the book 2 times and I am still sketchy on some of the ideas presented with this book. The book is 185 pages although so it is straight to the point, but maybe the authors traded the number of pages with the ability to explain things more clearly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone!!!
I am a super beginner programmer with NO experience whatsoever. Well, my buddy is profiecient in SEVERAL languages, including java, Visual basic, and python, and he wanted to learn C++, so i decided to learn with him. At first i went through countless online tutorials, then i went and bought some books, but they were all too confusing! So finally, i went online and did some diggina and found this book, so i told my friend and we both bought this book, and it is fantastic!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Head Start
These Step by Step books are used at most community colleges to teach students how to use various MS applications. If you are self-directed, it can save you the class cost.It is also a great way to teach yourself an application.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Reference if you Deal with Project Management at any Level using MS Project
The best reference out there to learn everything you can do with MS Project 2003. This book is packet with useful information, laid out in a clear and readable language, with many illustrations and examples, and a CD-ROM loaded with practice Project files. The 23 chapters in the book deal with everything related with project management: From creating a task list, setting up resources, and assigning resources to tasks,... to measuring performance, tracking progress, and managing risks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough introduction to Project
Among what real managers are likely to face, there cannot be many harder projects to plan and track than the shooting of a film. It's a really good idea that this book uses a short movie's shooting schedule as the model project for all its exercises and illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book to learn MS Project 2003 AND scheduling techniques
I purchased this book as part of the "Microsoft Office Project 2003 Orange Belt Self Study Package" from IIL (Institute for International Learning). For those who understand the basic concepts of project management, the book is extremely educational as it will teach you the basics of MS Project, as well as various project scheduling techniques that you may not have been aware of.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reveals Many MSP Issues-but Not for Beginners
This book will not teach you how to perform 'work planning' (or scheduling) and it will not teach you the basics of how to use MS Project.I have at least 5 thick books that do that, and I consider most of them useless.I have been managing IT projects since the 1980s, and have used MS Project (MSP) since the early 1990s. I have spent many late hours struggling with its confusing and misleading and Poorly documented) functions that do not always do what you expect (or the help/manual says)it will do.I particulary dislike it's seemingly random choice to recalc a critical path, and changes dates and durations based only on resources. In June, my team (an experienced set of IT project managers)took advanced MS Project training from the "International Institute for Learning". All 15 people who attended the training said it was the best MS project training they had ever had!
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid book
I bought this book off to help me with scheduling.I found it to be both comprehensive and fun; Using examples at the end of each chapter to reinforce the learning.I tend to refer back to it whenever I'm planning a new project. This book was well worth my time and energy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A NATIVE WINDOWS C GUIDING ANGEL

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Window programming books
This book is one of the best because it forms a foundation for everything that comes after. If you want to understand Windows, you have to have it. It doesn't cover advanced topics, but in order to understand advanced Windows programming, you need to understand everything in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great foundation book
This is a very good book to build your win32 foundation with. But it is rather outdate if you want to make use of the latest windows os and with vista coming out, a new edition needs to be published. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most O'Reilly book are quality references.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend an O'Reilly book to a beginner, just learning, but for anyone with some experience, these are the preferred learning & reference tools.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The examples are not easy to follow and it does not give sufficient explanation. It is basically useless to me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with a C++ background
My background is in C++ with some experience with Java and no experience with .NET.I didn't fully realize how similar C++ is to C# until I finished this book, and I think my money would have been better spent buying a book on .NET.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Exchange 2003
I like this book because it is easy to read and it is clear. Of course, you will enjoy better this book with prior exchange experience or training. Microsoft has done a great job on their Exchange 2003 class. Combine the two and you will get a good start on Exchange installation, maintenance, and architecture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best exchange book I ever bought.Possibly best computer book.I can't say enough.
This book basically has every answer to every question you've had about exchange. It also has tons of scripts with detailed explanations on the cd, as well as .vsd templates for troubleshooting, upgrade senario docs, and tons of other useful material.I've been consulting for 5+ years, mcsex2, etc.As far as windows, or exchange books from ANY publisher, its the best i've ever read, or even heard about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it
This book takes you through the CLR and explains how and why it works. The aurthor teaches you about the metadata all the way down to whats inside the internal data sructures the CLR uses. You will learn about what gets put on the stack and heap and what data, and in what order things are on the stack and heap. There is so much to the CLR and its difficult to put it all down. This book does a good job at explaining it all in an orginized easy to read fasion. At first glance this book looks like its just an introduction to the .NET Framework and then a C# language tutorial starting with the primitive types and then moving on up to generics. This is not the case, it starts off explaing the what the .NET Framework is and the CLRs execution model. Then it goes into metadata and application configuration and installation. Then it gets into the nitty gritty. It starts you off explaining the types in chapter 4, this insnt just a tutorial to ints and objects, it takes you deep under the covers. You will also get a good understanding of the various tools, like NGen.exe and when and why you should and shouldnt use it. There is alot of difficult content in this book, you will atleast understand it better if you read this. There is so much about this book that I can say but all I need to say is buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential CLR Internals
I echo the positive reviews below. If you already know the .Net platform fairly well and want to understand the internals of the CLR, this is the best place to start. This edition is as good or better than his 1.0/1.1 version, Applied .Net Framework Programming.

4-0 out of 5 stars For advanced developers
This book gives a deep view of the CLR and framework. You can find tips for performance, and complete description of many functionalities of the framework. The bad think of this book, is that don't come with a CD, and because this, you lost a quick find and a way to carry the book with you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Ready for .NET 3.0 Yet?
Just as I was beginning to get a bit of a handle on .NET Version 2.0, along comes .NET 3.0 as part of the new Windows Vista operating system. To be sure, you can run it on XP with SP2 installed after you have installed .NET Framework 3.0. The book presumes that you have experience with .NET 2.0 and with C#. If you do not, the author recommends you read some of his earlier books.
5-0 out of 5 stars The long awaited Programming Windows, 6th Edition!
This book is the destined to be not only a classic but also the standard for WPF development. It's look and feel is reminiscent of his previous classic: Programming Windows. So much so, in fact, that you could call this his long awaited 6th edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive WPF Book
I have had this book for about 2 weeks now, as Amazon delivered it to me early before the official release.I am a tech book junkie.I buy a lot of tech books. This is the best programming text I have purchased in the last couple of years.Petzold does a great job explaining WPF from both a nuts & bolts prespective and a big picture perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the newbie!
Definitely not for the newbie. This is for the seasoned access programmers.I you are new to programming (at least in access) and are looking for a book on how to program with access, this is not for you. This is a great book for those seasoned programmers who are looking to make their applications better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Solid, useful book for development of Access Applications.
Easy to read first few chapters with basic design info, remainder of the book focuses on complete applications that can serve as a template/best practice for almost any other MS Access application.
5-0 out of 5 stars I've learned much in the first 3 chapters
As a self-taught Access developer for the past eight years, I have an extensive library of books dealing with beginneing to advanced areas of Access. I bought this book to add to my library, figuring it to be another reference item. However, in a casual browsing of the content, I discovered this book has much more to offer. I was pleasantly surprised to see information on levels of magnitude for linked tables, never having known that the number of sub folders for linked tables can affect the speed of reading from them.
