Wandering in the fog
I agree with the complaint about lack of index.Combined with the vague chapter headings, the reader really needs lots of telepathy or maybe just pre-existing knowledge to use this book as a resource.For every 10 times that I had difficulty in administering or using Project Server as a super user and I looked at this book, 9 times I walked away with no solution.I accomplished more by just trying things on my own, and Googling for hints.

Excellent walk throughs
If you learn better through the combination of conceptual overview and detailed walk throughs you'll love Brian Larson's approach.
Great overview
I would agree with the other statements about this book covering many aspects of BI.Unlike other books that focus primarily on Analysis Services, this book covers everything from data source integration to custom reporting.I was even a bit surprised to see a section on artificial intelligence as it applies to data mining.Just as the others mentiond, if it covered every aspect of each of the pieces of BI, the book would be too big.I would have liked to see more focus on the key elements to BI rather than briefly touching them as it does everything else.

Save a tree
OK -- it's not terrible, but it reminds me of many books that start with "this is a field, this is a record, this is a table." It started fine - I learned the difference between star and snowflake schema, the benefits of a data mart, and the key feature of SQL 2005 Analysis Services that addresses the latency between OLTP and OLAP (it's a feature called Universal Data Model (UDM). All cool. The trouble begins in the subsequent chapters with the cutesy MaximumMinimum company and the painstaking, step-by-step "now you do it" approach. Excellent Study Guide and Reference
I used 'Als Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure' for my test and scored high. It was a tough test but this guide does a great job of telling you what you need to know. Most importantly it covers the topics in a VERY clear and concise manner. The labs are also very well done and helpful. The separate lab/text is a great format I hope to see for all future exam books.

You need to know the target audience
I believe this book is targeted at new programmers or programmers who have no experience with VB language. I have read the previous edition cover to cover. I have to say this book does a good job of bringing your (VB) programming skills to a level that is just below commercial level. That is to say, despite the sheer volume, it does not teach you everything about VB.NET, many major advanced concepts are glossed over. For example, what is exactly the difference between a module and a class?(not explained clearly) Why are why namespace names seems to be hierachial?(glossed over) What's a inner class(Not included)? Why do we need structures? Why can't we just use classes for everything(Not included)?

Just when I thought their second edition was the best, the Deitels have certainly outdone themselves once again. This book flat rocks. This book contains so much useful information it is unbelievable.

Power packed...loaded with useful items.
My only regret is that I didn't get the book sooner.This is a must for any serious Excel user who needs to hone their general skills and improve their efficiency.Efficiency is the name of the game for Excel, because if you're not making use of it's more advanced tools and utlilities, then you are not making the most of the program.
Informative and to the point
I bought the book and also the media ugrade, so I could read it right away online. It's filled with very helpful tips and tricks that most typical users overlook. I definitely recommend it to any Excel user.

Great Text Book
This was the assigned text for a class I took. It was an excellent text book: clearly written, well organized, and easy to study. The key points jump off the page and are repeated for emphasis. What's more, this text is so valid that I have already begun to use it at work, and expect it will remain in my reference library for a long time. It is a rare textbook that is worth it's price.

Great little Exchange 2003 Admin book
There have been several of these types of books published by MS Press.Several years ago I purchased the Exchange Pocket Consultant.These books, and the information provided by William Stanek, are great.
Excellent!
I spend most of my time working with SQL Server, but recently I had to take over and rebuild our Exchange. As I've had good success with Stanek's other books, I picked this one up the week before to help me get up to speed on Exchange, and it did an excellent job. I successfully upgraded, had all our servers up and running by Monday morning and we have an extensive multiple server configuraiton with OWA, wireless, and X.400 MTAs. Exchange Administrator Pocket Consultant is by far the one Exchange book I can't recommend highly enough. Get it, you'll be glad to have it on hand. I refer to this book constantly.

Tons of information, but hit and miss.
The book covers a ton of information and is usually excellent for reference. However, every now and then there is a subject that is thin. Backups is a good example. Such an important part of the system and there are only a few pages on the topic.

Becoming knowledgeable in computers

Fantastic Book for a Unix guy like me
For a Unix guy like me, command line tools (and scripting) is essential. This book is truly fantastic for that. It has stuff that I could not find even with google. Very well organized and well-presented.

EXCELLENT RESOURCE!
Stanek's Command-line Pocket Consultant is hands-down the best on the subject. It's clear, concise and packed with useful details. It covers just about everything I've ever wanted to do from the command-line, and has extremely detailed information on some areas (such as printers, performancing monitoring, and advance hard disk config) covered nowhere else. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A nice compact reference to the Windows command-line.
If you use the Windows command-line then this book should be very usefull. The most usefull section is the batch script reference. It can be a real time saver when you writing a batch script and you cant remember how to do something. This book also contains the most usefull commands you will use when you are maintaning computers and servers. One thing I dont like about this book is that it containsinformation about using the command-line for Windows Server 2003, I think this should be left out and put in a seperate pocket consultant. ... Use this book and forgetthe F1
I believe that the help included with Excel, is only good for very simple stuff, as soon as you want to get into more involved subjects the Excel help is plain not useful. That's when you would need books like this. This book covers what the title says it does. for other topics (pivot tables etc...)other books are needed. That's a lot of money? for something you didn't even know you need. I agree! But you been here before! That's the only way! So don't get overwhelmed by your 'green pee' colleagues who really had time to master Excel(mainly because they had nothing better do) Buy this book and go dwarf them as you should ;-). This book shows you that it all would have been very simple if Excel help was written by someone who really cared.

Really Helps at Work
I have to create a lot of Excel spreadsheets at work, and was always sort of intimidated by the functions in Excel.Instead of using functions, I spent a lot of time entering numbers and then finding the answer by hand, and just typing the answer in an empty cell.If any of the data changed, I would have to do all of the calculations over again, and hope that I didn't make any mistakes. This book explains each of the Excel functions in a really clear and easy to understand way, and walks you through how to use them step by step.I'm using more and more functions in my spreadsheets now.I don't have as many mistakes as before, because the functions do the calculations automatically, even when you change some of the data.I keep this book in my desk and look at it all the time.The people I work for have noticed the difference in the quality of my spreadsheets, and I'm getting a lot of complements.They're even coming to me to ask for advice!I definitely recommend this book if you use Excel at work.

A Really Helpful Book
I always found it hard to understand how functions work. It's one thing to use the autosum button to add some numbers together. It's another thing to use functions and know which one to use. OK...I can see why Microsoft Visual Studio has been such a popular IDE for developers.Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Unleashed from Lars Powers and Mike Snell does a nice job in explaining the value of the latest version of this classic, as well as being an in-depth guide to the feature set...
Good introduction for novices and intermediate VS2005 developers
This is a pretty impressive book, albeit a bit lengthier than it needed to be.There's tremendous coverage of everything, and I mean everything, in Visual Studio 2005.If you're new to VS 2005 then you'll find this a great guide to getting the most out of your environment.If you're fairly familiar with VS 2005 then you may still find a few goodies hidden away here too.
A Good Start, but.......
It's been a long wait to start seeing books about the Visual Studio 2005 environment.You might expect that after such a long wait, the books coming out would provide you with some valuable insights into the usage of VS2005. And, to some extent, this book does provide that.There is very good coverage of the basics....the structure of the VS IDE, how to create forms, how to create webservices, etc.But, after you go through all the work of designing and coding these neat programs, you of course want to be able to roll them out for use.At that point, this book seems to lose its mission, UNLESS you happen to be using the MS Team System, because after spending 16 chapters instructing the reader on how to use a variety of tools available in most versions of Visual Studio, the book starts to discuss production publishing and deployment, but ONLY if you are using MS Team System.

Industrial strength book
Many OO/Patterns books are written as an introduction to the concepts and gloss over the nuances of building software in the real world.This book takes on the nitty gritty of what most developers face day to day. While it does include the gratuitous "student registration" example, this book actually delves into issues such as integrating legacy code.It also actually implements bad design choices before moving on to better solutions, and even these solutions are described in terms of trade-offs between competing forces.Also, by discussing specific Design Patterns in more depth than the cannonical format, I had a few "a-ha" moments when patterns I never quite understood emerged.I would/should have given this book 5 stars, but I had problems with the layout (oversized pages/no margins), the inconsitencies of diagrams (clouds and UML), and the disjoint feeling that the book was a collection of separately written articles, although the author does tie them nicely together.All in all, this is a must have.
Required Reading - none better
Absolutely no one writes as well, knows as much, or has as much to say about designing world class programs as Robert Martin. This book should be on every serious programmer's shelf; whatever language you happen to be programming in.

Pretty Good!!
The idea of what the book is supposed to accomplish is great. I'm currently using the text in a class. It's not necessarily reader friendly and the instructor's resources are seriously lacking (errors in test bank - many, in textbook, no copies of textbook examples beyond image files - for instance, if the book shows a spreadsheet, the author doesn't provide you with the spreadsheet file, but an image of the spreadsheet - no kidding,). It could grow into my favorite series, if they tweak it and fix the errors, but it's so problematic at the moment, I might have to "can" it before next year. I would love to see the authors improve it. It's worth the effort. ... Read more

Haven't come across anything this can't answer for me...
It's about time MS put out a reference set that covers the most important topics, not abstract one's. I like this reference set alot so far because of it's thurough coverage of the Document Object Models (DOM) for Access, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc. I haven't gone through the whole thing yetbut the only left for me to find is where they talk more about automation,something pretty much left out of the Office 97 reference set. Overallthough, this is a great set of books to have at your disposal. It hasalready helped me come up with solutions for the custom-businessapplications and macros I create. There is also alot of material thatwasn't in the last series. A great asset to any company with VB or VBAprogrammers.

REALLY HELPFUL!
I was used to an InDesign software from far ago, the dinosaur era. When got the newest version, was at a complete lost. This book explains in easy words EVERYTHING! Adobe's software is great, but their manuals can be used and understood by those with an IQ of 300 up. Am grateful for this book and fully recommend it.

quite boring
Technically, this will teach you how to use indesign. But it's so boring and repetitive. It's like memorizing a list.

Not as good as it should be
I've used Visual Quickstart books for years, and until this one they've been extremely accurate. This one contains what seem to be screen caps of menus and options from some previous version of InDesign, so you have to look around for the options someplace else if they've moved.

Comprehensive and understandable - really learn MFC
I purchased this book a number of years ago when I started a new job which required me to program using MFC.I had never done any programming for Win32, let alone using MFC (which wraps around the Win32 API).Coming from this state of ignorance, it only took a short time of working with Prosise's book for me to gain enough confidence to start writing MFC programs on my own.
Truly beautiful work BUT........
no practical programs. Both "Windows programming" of my boss,Charles Petzold and the book taking draw, game programs to demonstrate.
who says it takes longer?
I managed to muddle my way through simple dialog-box based applications with hardly any documentation -- just advice from colleagues. When I got assigned to write a real live multi-threaded, multi-document app, I tried the books lying around the office which had helped me considerably with the simpler apps, but which left me much confused about things like device contexts. Why all of a sudden CClientDC instead of CPaintDC? And what is a DC anyway exactly? They say, "See, if you do this and this, then you can draw an ellipse that wiggles around." So I do that, and then try changing parameters, and am left only able to draw that ellipse. I can't make it purple.
