BAND ON THE RUN! BAND ON THE RUN!
Would you like to be able to create professional sounding musical recordings? If you would, you're in luck! Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that will guide you through a long list of enhancements, large and small, that make GarageBand a better musical tool than ever before.
Great for anyone working with GarageBand
GarageBand is not aimed at professional musicians. Instead it is intended to help amateurs produce music easily. The application comes with 1,000 pre-recorded sampled loops, plus 50 sampled or synthesized instruments which can be played using a MIDI keyboard connected to the computer, or using an on-screen keyboard. This is a complex piece of software, thus enters David Pogue and his "Missing Manual" series to explain it all.
Much more than a Manual
David Pogue's, "GarageBand 2: The Missing Manual" is much more than a Manual for GarageBand 2. It is a treasure-trove of tips and tricks, a detailed-yet-comprehensible resource, and it is the best non-periodical Computer publication I have had the joy to read.

iLife '05 is the fifth Missing Manual I've purchased. I find them helpful, informative, and fun to read. The chapter layout is logical and fluid, the index is thorough, and the entire manual is chock full of color (!) illustrations.

Really fun and informative
I bought one these guys' other books about the Palm, and was glad to see the same format for an MP3 book. They tell you everything about burning, ripping, players, software, Web radio stations, and even legal stuff about MP3. They do these hilarious point/counterpoint arguements like they did in the Palm book -- very funny, guys! Oh and the reason I bought this book is there's stuff for bands and musicians about getting your stuff distributed on the net and making money from it. IT HAS A VERY REASONABLE PRICE
"MP3: The Definitive Guide" comes at a reasonable price. It is a good text, which provides a complete coverage of MP3 using four major platforms: Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and BeOS. Not Definitive, barely even edited.
I bought this book with the hopes that it would give me some detailed insight into how mp3 works, instead it spends most of its pages talking about the differences between encoders and how to use them, as well as a detailed description of how to click on the play button in winamp. Great Book-- Technical and Readable

Well written! Well worth reading!!!
I've made a spot on my bookshelf for Digital Audio Essentials from O'Reilly Publishing. Bruce and Marty Fries are authors par excellance. Rarely will you encounter the fine points of audio so eloquently expressed. I've read several books about digital audio. Typically, as the author attempts an failed explanation I find myself thinking, "Boy, if I didn't already fully understand that concept, I'd be totally stumped!"
useful information...............
the value of this text will ultimately be a function of one's mathematics background as well as the degree of familiarity with audio. personally, i found the book to be an excellent "update" to the previous text..!! keep in mind that the field of digital audio is changing SO RAPIDLY that it is virtually impossible to keep up with the changes ...from an authors standpoint........be that as it may, most will derive more than satisfactory information from the revised edition.!

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS!!
Do you want to be a listener or a podcaster? If you do, then this pocket guide is for you! Authors Jack Herrington, Kirk McElhearn and Richard Giles, have done an outstanding job of writing a pocket guide that shows you how to tune into podcasts and download them to your favorite portable device so you can listen to them when you want.
Good quick & dirty introduction, but...
Quite clearly, this pocket guide does what it's supposed to do. It gives you a quick & dirty intro into the podcasting world. I already know a thing or two on podcasting but for beginners, this is a nice introduction. Why the 'but...'?? Well, there is a small chapter on 'Fixining common audio problems'. This was a very small chapter but I'd like to have that one a bit bigger. Perhaps in an other pocket guide? I liked that part because it kinda gives you shortcuts to some specific solutions to improve your audio, without going in the technical stuff. Very nice.

Easy intro for the podcasting novice...
If you're new to the podcasting arena (either as a listener or producer) and you want a quick overview on the subject, you can find a pretty good one with Podcasting Pocket Guide by Kirk McElhearn, Richard Giles, and Jack D. Herrington.

solid reading
Trying to configure all the Winamp capabilites can be a serious hassle if you're like me (not internet-smart).That's where this wonderful book comes in handy.You really can't fail if you read over this book carefully and follow along to everything it says.Sometimes you may come across a confusing sentence here and there (again, I'm not internet-smart) but that's not really the BOOKS fault.It's my fault, and I'm aware of this.
Top Book on Winamp MP3 Player
This book is an excellent guide to how to make full use of Winamp's capabilities. Using primarily the MP3 audio-encoding format, Nullsoft's Winamp is currently the most popular MP3 player. Although some of this popularity is due to its ease of use, it's also because of the incredible flexibility and capabilities of Winamp. Although the main focus of the book is on the Windows-only Winamp and related programs & utilities, the authors include information about comparable products for the Macintosh where they existed when the book was written.

This book is essentially well-written and informative, but the title is somewhat misleading - this is not an introduction to MP3s in general but rather a manual for Winamp, the popular freeware Windows player.Read more

Good "nuts and bolts" look at MP3's
This book offers a kind of "bare bones" look at the MP3 phenomenon, starting off with chapters on what exactly MP3's are, and "A Compressed History" of MP3's. There are also chapters on finding and downloading MP3's, the software you can find to play them, chapters on making your own MP3's (hence the terms "ripping," digitizing, and "sound squishing"). There's good advice if you are a musician on marking MP3's, "marketing" them and where to post them to publicize your work. Worth the 20 bucks, for sure. But don't stop here!
[...] This book is written by TWO authors: Rod Underhill of MP3.com, and Nat Gertler (who has written many other Complete Idiot's Guide and computer books). They each have their own slant. The book is DEFINITELY a big plug for MP3.com as an internet entity on the world wide web for online music (...). ... There is a lot of information in the book about MP3s in general as well as MP3.com - the company - in particular. So, in this case, it's a cool plug. There is also a good deal of REPETITION in the book. For instance, what it says in the "ROD SPEAKS" box on page 160 about LYCOS falling into Copyright Trouble is almost EXACTLY stated in slightly different wording on page 172 in the "JAM ON THIS" box where the heading is called: "Lycos Moves into Tricky Waters." Good book for begginers....
This book, I would recommend to a musician or just someone wanting to know about mp3's. The book has enough information, while the reader not needing to be a super - geek. Read more

This book is SERIOUSLY outdated!!!
I think back in 2000 or 2001 this book WOULD have been relevant.But for today, it's useless.Actually, the first chapter on "What is MP3 Internet Audio" is still relevant.But the rest of the book is totally outdated.Even the web site associated with the book has been shut down.And in the book, the web site is referred to often for further research, as information was left out of the book because they had the luxury, at one time, of having a web site.Moreover, this book is about a Napster that predated the big change BEFORE it was a pay site.Once you realize how outdated the information is, you have to doubt all of it. I also bought a book called, "Burning Down the House," and found it to be FAR more relevant.It was written after the lawsuits associated with illegal downloading began.
Everything you ever wanted to know about MP3s
Awesome book-- still relevant for anyone in the movie or entertainment business...or anyone who owns an iPod--this is full of information about such topics as: Napster, downloading programs, playing and storing big name music and making money with your own music while you get a full collection of tunes. How do you download MP3's-- from the simple to the complex. A great find-- at any price-- let alone what you can get it for on Amazon.com

MP3 Underground
I purchased the MP3 Underground book at a Wal-Mart store for a great price. I have never understood much about MP3, until I purchased this book. It gives, especially for newbies, a semi-technical explanation of the "does" and "don'ts" in the "seedy underworld" of the MP3. The book "reads" very easily, even for a newbie. The book appears to have literary content, but it is excellent for technical explanations. The nice part of this book, which appears to be unintentional, is the many freebies. For instance, on pages 138 and 142, supported by pictures, are good technical explanations for the many whistles and bells on the MusicMatch Jukebox. Not even Microsoft or Dell gives a newbie this kind of illustrated technical explanations. This is a must have book. ... Read more
