5-0 out of 5 stars OPM is an Excellent Methodology
I have used many methodologies over my career. Most of them are based around the object-oriented and structured design paradigms. I found out about OPM quite by accident about a year ago. I've been using it ever since. I have used it to model both hardware and software systems, as well as for business process modeling. It is an excellent methodology and I recommend it for anyone developing any kind of system.
5-0 out of 5 stars The way modeling ought to work
OPM is a methodology for modeling systems, technical as well as any other system. In the techical world it compares with UML. OPM is designed with consistant and simple notations, uses simple rules that when combined can be used to model any system (real or informational) to any level of complexity that is desired by the system architect. Also, it integrates object modeling and process modeling in one diagram (although you can still keep them separate if you wanted). 5-0 out of 5 stars Object-Process Methodology (OPM)
This book describes how Object-Process Methodology (OPM) CASE can be used as a tool for generating complete system intent specifications by graphical object diagrams, precise semantic and syntactic language, and intuitive symbols, definitions and structures. As systems have become more complex, a prevalent problem in systems development has been the number of accruing errors. These errors can cause catastrophic failure in the worst-case in addition to intolerable schedule delays and cost overruns. Introducing errors as well as difficulty finding and successfully correcting them occurs because of the lack of proper analysis and design tools for complex system specifications. OPM has the attributes to mitigate against the possibility of system failure, providing comprehensive visibility for better schedule and cost control in product development. It enhances reuse of system modules, processes and software routines in different contexts, while reducing the chance of errors. OPM automatically generates intent specifications that are readily understood by both customers and product team members and are translatable to machine control subsystems. OPM is a holistic systems paradigm that extends the Object-Oriented (OO) paradigm and overcomes its major shortcomings by integrating system structure and behavior in a single integrated graphic and natural language model. OPM successfully tackles the task of development and lifecycle management of systems, products and projects. OPM is a significant extension of and a major departure from the OO approach. It incorporates the system static-structural and dynamic-procedural aspects into a single, unified model. Presented as a concise visual formalism by a set of Object-Process Diagrams (OPD set), it is automatically translated into a set of Object-Process Language (OPL) script, a subset of natural English. At the basis of the OPM philosophy is the observation that to faithfully and naturally analyze and design systems in any domain, processes, like objects, should be considered as stand-alone "things" (entities) that are not necessarily encapsulated within objects. This detachment and de-coupling of processes from objects emphasizes the duality and complementarity of objects and processes, and opens the door for structure-behavior unification. At any point in time, objects exist with some structure and state. This is the static aspect of the system. Processes affect objects by changing their states. This is the dynamic aspect of the system. System complexity is managed through a number of graphical scaling options: zooming into and out of processes, unfolding and folding objects, and expressing or suppressing object states. These mechanisms provide for selectively detailing a subset of things while still maintaining the high-level context of the details.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars CD and DVD Recording for Dummies
IT WAS A GOOD INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR THE GENERAL AREA OF CD AND DVD RECORDING.

1-0 out of 5 stars How Not to Deal with Controversy
True, there are many controversies raging about copying DVDs and copyrights. I suspect we are in a transition zone with all this and "the industry" will figure out how to help people love and cherish their DVDs rather than simply calling everyone a pirate. Having said that, I can also understand why an author of such a book wouldn't want to "say too much" about this controversy, especially if he his looking over his shoulder at "the lawyers." I was trying to think of an analogy to express my disapointment in this book (and this isn't a good one) but it goes like this: You want to go to Israel and you buy a book on "Israel for Dummies" and you search for something, anything on the controversy of the wall they are building. But instead of finding a discussion of the controversy you find a few off-handed quips about "There's a wall going up and it's causing some controversy. 'Nuff said."
4-0 out of 5 stars CD and DVD Recording for Dummies
I purchased the book in order to help with a presentation I was doing to my not so computer literate co-workers.I found the book helpful in assisting me to put certain focal items in lay person's terms, and some additional information to help keep my presentation interesting.I am glad I purchased it.Warning, if you are a computer guru, stay clear, not for the advanced at heart. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Collection ofFascinating Contributors
Reading this collection of articles gave me a better understanding of the people and ideas that helped shape computer-based communication. The contributors are for the most part well chosen; a few that I might well have done without, I must admit -- but far more excellent choices than "questionable" ones. The organization of the book is interesting as well. I was reminded of the magazine "Mondo 2000" that I subscribed to in the early '90's (multimedia/geek chic).

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is a must read; the web site is a must see!
This book is a must read for anyone interested in modern art and culture, and where its going. The companion web site on www.artmuseum.net is a brilliant compliment to the book, with 50 video clips, rare photos and other treats. Finally, a publishing project that "gets it" how to use the web + printed book in a way where the sum is greater than the parts. Its amazing to see how long artists and scientists have been working (alone, and in some cases together) towards this goal.Prehaps the following decade will witness a true "waking up" by the mass culture to this new syntax, new reading-practice, of multi-media hyper-texted information. This book may mark a point in time where we started acknowledging the depth and extent of our post-Guttenburg world. Bravo to Randall Packer and Ken Jordon for pulling this project off. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars One step forward....three steps back
Normally I hope that a reference book will teach me everything I want to know about the subject matter.Sometimes I'm am pleased if I come away with a handful of new tips and insights. On some occasions I find I have wasted my time and money on a book that failed to teach me anything.Really, however, have I bought a book that actually leaves me STUPIDER after completing it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but too many errors
I'm a teacher learning to create learning software for high schoolers.I bought this book in 2002 to learn AW6.It's been a great resource that has made me a proficient user. However, I'm disappointed that the files for chapter 16 were missing from the CD which are the meat and potatoes of the program. That alone cost it 2 stars.Along with other errors people have mentioned. To the publisher, stop being sloppy, lazy and cheap. CLEAN UP YOUR EDITING!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Wilson/Thornton Authorware 6 Text FULL of Mistakes!
I am a new user of Authorware 6 and am using this text for a college-level course.Despite my novice status as an Authorware user and developer, I have 20+ years in using computers, programming, and developing computer projects; thus, I am no notive when it comes to computers. This text is RIDDLED with mistakes, some small and foolish, others major and appalling.(My favorite laughable one was "Ctrl + Shirt + R" found on page 537 rather than "Ctrl + Shift + R"!!Even a novice editor should have caught that one, so it gives you a good idea as to the overall quality of the editing.)Typographical errors appear throughout the text, particularly the later chapters; some files on the companion disc have different names from those in the text while other files aren't available, buttons or graphics that should be available are not, and the list goes on and on.For example, Step 10a found on page 503 has at least two errors: (1) ":=True" should be "=True" and (2) "ButtonBackup" should be "ButtonForward".If you use error (1) you receive a warning message that your expression is incorrect, and if you use error (2) your navigation will not work as it should.Perhaps most annoying, the book takes a step-by-step approach that guides the user through the development process, which is a great idea.HOWEVER, steps are occasionally omitted or a sentence is missing that makes you think you have done something wrong---until you retrace your steps (another waste of your time) and realize the book has neglected to mention something. Using this text to learn Authorware has been a frustrating, frustrating experience, a waste of many hours of my time, and has made me think seriously about wanting to develop software using Authorware.Having only recently purchased this text in January 2004 (text was copyrighted in 2002), the publisher should be ashamed not to have yet published a newer edition of this text to correct many of these errors.Grrr! ... Weinstein tackles the use of the Internet for distributing multimedia data. Its global reach, that is becoming ever more extensive and cheaper, makes it a compelling distribution channel for multimedia. He shows how this is practical. Starting with the ground level Internet Protocol, with such abilities as stateless (though potentially lossy) communication via UDP, and for modes like broadcast and multicast, that can minimise bandwidth usage.

1-0 out of 5 stars Might be good for a newbie to PC's.
I have held off getting involved in the Home Theater (HT) scene for some time, waiting for prices and standards to settle down - and good thing I did!Yesterday's 'standards' are obsolete, and there are several generations of orphan A/V equipment out there that now don't talk to each other well (or at all). However, things are now starting to settle down, and I'm getting interested.Since I'm a computer geek, I'm also interested in doing HT with a PC (HTPC).So I bought this book, but I'm not very impressed. It might be good for a complete computer newbie, but I know what a sound card is.I know what a video card is.I didn't need this level of hand-holding.In fact, there is nothing in this book that I didn't already know.If you know what "Linux" is; if you have ever formatted a hard drive; if you know what the different flavors of recordable DVD are, you don't need this book and it will just offend you.I've never written an Amazon review before, despite being a long-time customer; but this book stinks on ice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Consistently pessimal in every respect
This book was presented to me by my sister in the hope that I would build her such a system. After reading it, I came to the conclusion that not only would I not build such a system, but that no knowledgeable person would either. I can't conceive of any reason behind any of the choices he makes other than perhaps get some freebie hardware from the vendors he plugs in this book.5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend it.
If you're thinking it's time for a new PC, but have never actually built one yourself, this book is for you.Read more
