Good but over-rated
Good but it could be much better. The selection of books on this topic is poor to begin with. But this happens to be one of the best in that underserved category.
A Refreshing Approach to Presentations
I ran across this book while researching a college workshop on perfecting presentation, dealing with public speaking and effective use of PowerPoint. As one who has suffered through numerous electronic slides that did little or nothing to augment the speaker's efforts, I was delighted to see this fresh and innovative approach. I believe this process works best, however, when one's speech is primarily persuasive in nature. Although these ideas helped me set up a strong introduction and conclusion, in a recent lecture I resorted to bullet points for the material I felt the students had to master. Perhaps as I get more used to Atkinson's technique, I'll better about using it in lecture. However, the business applications seem quite worthwhile. My students' workshop presentations that used his techniques were highly engaging. I highly recommend this book and the supporting web site.

Information Dashboard Design
This book primarily deals with what the title says. Dashboards. I was not aware ofthe complexity and breadth of this type of interface, but since it is not a forte I usually provide to clients, the book was an interesting read.
Disappointing
I had high hopes when picking up this book.In the end I found little of use.Perhaps I was looking for more than an approach that was business oriented.Information displays for systems monitoring are a topic almost completely missed in the book.

Great book to start getting organized
This book gives you great ideas about how to get organiazed and get things going. The only thing is that you will really need to use and get along MS Outlook pretty well, else you'll miss some of the tips and tricks in the book.
Take Back Your Life!
I'm not even to the end of the book and I already have my e-mail box emptied to zero, all my documents and files organized on my computer into an easy reference system so I know what information I already have. I am going to apply the same principles to my paper files this week. I had so much information stored and coming in that it is a huge relief to gain control over it all! All because I applied what I learned from this book.

Stong Emphasis on Up Front Planning
I am a veteran Franklin Covey planner user and consider myself very well organized and a strong time manager.Our company recently made the move to outlook, and I purchased this book hoping to get some tips on how to make the most of planning with outlook from someone who had a time management orientation.What I didn't expect was to learn anything more about time management.Boy was I wrong!Sally provides some real eye openers about spending more time up front planning tasks to get to "Strategic Next Actions" - tasks you can actually do without any dependencies.She also packs in excellent tips on setting up a reference system, handling email, and using the outlook task categories to their full potential.

outlook 2003

Computer Dummy
No Surprises here. It is exactly what you would expect for a Dummies book! I have been an outlook user for a long time and I know how to do much more than before!

Techie Help

Great little Exchange 2003 Admin book
There have been several of these types of books published by MS Press.Several years ago I purchased the Exchange Pocket Consultant.These books, and the information provided by William Stanek, are great.
Excellent!
I spend most of my time working with SQL Server, but recently I had to take over and rebuild our Exchange. As I've had good success with Stanek's other books, I picked this one up the week before to help me get up to speed on Exchange, and it did an excellent job. I successfully upgraded, had all our servers up and running by Monday morning and we have an extensive multiple server configuraiton with OWA, wireless, and X.400 MTAs. Exchange Administrator Pocket Consultant is by far the one Exchange book I can't recommend highly enough. Get it, you'll be glad to have it on hand. I refer to this book constantly.

Comprehensive, but still some holes
Previous reviewer's comments are noted well, but I was somewhat disappointed in the coverage of forms development.I really wanted to learn to move/place fields on a contact form and designate them drop-down, etc. Simple enough, I thought, for a book of this coverage.But even though the author talked about the abilitiy to do this, there were no directions, no examples, and no description of the 'Controls' options required to do it.For a book of this size and price, I had hoped for more meat.No, not to the detail of VB scripting, but certainly more detailed coverage of Outlook's powerful forms and macro abilities. To my chagrin, I'm finding my answers under theOutlook 'Help' section in the program itself!

Most comprehensive
A most comprehensive treatment of Outlook.Extremely well suited for an experienced Outlook user, with many details on the use in a server/business environment.Describes the interrelationship with Windows Outlook Express.Probably a little too comprehensive for the single system user just trying to read and write a few email messages. Subject matter is exceptionally well presented and thorough.

Detailed treatment of Outlook 2003 for power users

Very poor!!
I wouldn't waste your money. I am only on chapter 2 and the mistakes in here are stacking up. Spelling mistakes, incorrect information and questions that say to pick an answer from a to g with the correct answer being h make it far from the ideal book to build your confidence or knowledge.
Nice
I've just bought the book from amazon, and first of all what I can say about it is that it's very cheap comparing if I bought it here in portugal. the price here is around 83 dollars, so I could almost buy 3 books with that money. really, buying from abroad is much more pleasant than buying in portugal... As for the book... well, better wait for it! :D

Not so bad
I got this book with a little over 1.5 years of exchange experience and I know quite a bit but thought i could learn alot more and certify in it.Well this book did help me the 2nd time through reading it.The biggest help really was the practice exams.I took the study exams and learned more that way then with reading.I would recommend this book only to those that actually understand Windows 2003, 2000 and NT both directory structure and network structure.There is alot of networking involved such as firewalls and opening ports.Overall it is a good book. ... Good Explanations but not Practical
This book has generally good easily digestible explanations for Exchange 2003.I really appreciate the informal down-to-Earth style and discussion of a lot of pieces. I was especially happy to see some good coverage of LDAP, IMAP, and POP configuration, which is seldom adequately covered in other Exchange books.
Overall, not too bad
I would hardly consider this book "Mastering Exchange" but the author does take the time to step you through all the property pages and settings so you at least get a basic idea of what it all means. You will have a solid basic understanding when you are done but you certainly won't be a master by any stretch of the imagination. I found several errors throughout the book specifically related to Windows and networking. The author should stick to Exchange because when the topic shifts to something else, I had my doubts about what I was reading. For instance, I believe the author stated that in an NT 4.0 Domain, if a PDC goes down, the other DC's elect a new one. WHAT!!!! Maybe a browser, but not a PDC. Its been a while since I read the book but I am pretty sure I read that in a side bar. As I said, overall, not bad if you what a basic intro to Exchange 2003. The title should be changed to Exchange 2003 basics.

Poor writing style
Maybe the content of this book is ok, but the writer has constant urge to put useless text lines and useless personal opinions between the technical explenations. This shouldn't be a story book ... Read more

Reference help book
This book is what used to be called a "manual" that came "free" after you spent a few hundred dollars on software.If you are looking for a manual, this is a good choice, but if you want to learn how to use the program with this, please don't.The examples it showed were not consistent within the chapter, so you could not follow along by trying to try out the concepts after reading easily.Read more

Poor Index, Missing key concepts, Garbage...
I frequently use these reviews to select books of all types.I consider myself a power user able to learn rapidly from good texts.This book has not been very helpful for my work in Crystal Reports.
Who are you writing this book for?
After reading positive reviews of this title, I decided to purchase the complete reference and was extremely disappointed. The most common problem with crystal books (or any other software application manual-excel, access, etc.) is that the author try's to appeal to all crystal report's users.There are generally three types of software user's out their, 1. database administrator/computer programmers who want reference manuals with excellent indexes. 2. Basic users who can get by with your classic "for dummies" title. 3. User's who don't understand VBA or SQL but want to be able to create reasonably advanced adhoc reports. A good reference book

Almost teaches you what you need to know.
I bought this book mostly to learn how to customize Contact forms.This book gives you about half the info you need.Then you hit a brick wall.I spent hours searching newsgroups and web sites to fill in the other half.There are a few simple things the author could have added so the book was actually valuable instead of incredibly frustrating.For example, the book shows you how to customize a form.Great.But then the book neglects to tell you how to apply that form to existing Contacts. ... Decent Introduction to Exchange
As an MCSE, I gave this book 4 stars for two reasons: the CD contains a 120 day trial version of Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition, and the text provides a good overview of Exchange 2003 features suitable for MCSE test prep. I did not rate this book with 5 stars because it is presented as an "Administrator's Companion," which I felt was stretching it a bit. As a previous reviewer has stated, there are better alternatives for strictly "desk reference companions" to Exchange; however, I was pleasantly surprised by how readable the book was, given that it is a Microsoft Press publication.
Waste of time for an Exchange Administrator
If you are an Exchange Administrator who wants to upgrade his support skills to Exchange 2003 this book is too basic.Case in point, Chapter 10 Monitoring Exchange Server 2003."... Windows Server 2003 records many events in its own event logs."... "Windows maintains three distinct logs" (Application, Security, and System) "You will encounter five types of events in the three logs, and a unique icon identifies each event type so that you can easily disntiguish between the information entries and the error entries"
This book has many faults
After reading this book to find some information with Active Directory Connectors, I found errors that the author should have known better.For example, the book states that the Exchange ADC can only be installed on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller.... this is completely false.Read more

An excellent how to book.

All you need to know to blog using Blogger
I have been writing on my blog using Blogger since 2002, so I am very familiar with almost all the options it provides you with to get your word out there in the blogosphere. Yet, I was able to pick up numerous new things when I read this book by Elizabeth Castro. It goes from the very basics that you'd need in order to get off the ground, all the way to incorporating audio into your blog, blogging via e-mail/telephone, customizing your blog, hosting it yourself and much, much more. It's incredible the amount of useful information that the author was able to pack in a little over 100 pages.

Pretty good reference manual
This book is a pretty good reference manual.It is better than most of the other books in explaining topics without a lot of extra techical jargon or fluff.

Excelent Migration Guide for Exchange 2003 !!!
If you are about to tackle a Migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 or from Exchange 2000 to Exchange Server 2003, this book is the guide you have been looking for. The author will tell you what you need to know in order to plan your migration and design the new Windows/Exchange 2003 environment. The book lists all the tools out there that can help you make your life a lot easier and it will take you through the process in a step-by-step fashion. On top of all the author does a wonderful work in aticipating most posible questions from the reader. I migrated from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 two servers in the same Active Directory Forest but in two different locations. All in a single weekend. I give it 5 Stars and a standing ovation. This book is a must have tool for a smooth Migration to Exchange 2003.

Security Is The New Watchword
A few years ago (I'm told) Bill Gates called all of the developers together and told them that the big thing it was necessary for Microsoft to do was to implement strong security systems in their mainstream products. I don't know if this is true, but the biggest changes in their 2003 series of products is greatly increased security emphasis.
Gotta have it.
In today's environment of spam, virus, and bad things in general, knowing how to protect yourself is a very valuable commodity. GREAT book on Exchange 2003 Security!!

Want to learn all about Exchange and Outlook?
I have to disagree with the reviewer who says there is not a lot of depth in this book.Sure, the author does leave out some topics but he clearly states that they can either really mess up Outlook or that they are not supported by Microsoft which can get you into trouble down the road.Otherwise, this book is the bible for Exchang and Outlook development bar none.I origianlly got it to learn how to integrate our corporate CRM system with Outlook (our sales reps live in Outlook!).The book is well written, has lots of samples and gave me the kick start I needed to get my job done.

Very disappointing
This is a good example of a book written by an author who just wanted to "write" and finish a book. I doubt if the author really knows the subject.
Not what I expected
After purchasing this book and skimming through all of it while reading the sections I was interested in more thoroughly (VBScript and Custom Forms), and then going through everything a 2nd time, I was extremely disappointed.

A likeable author who knows his stuff
I am currently reading this book for the third time, and would like to add my opinions to those of the others here. Examples are in VB 6.0 instead of VB.Net
Althought this book provides some very useful subject matter, the sample code provided is written in Visual Basic 6.0 rather than the new Visual Basic .Net - a fact that was rather dissappointing given that this is a version 2002 book.Since converting complicated code like comm add ins from 6.0 to .Net is no easy endeavor, I'm finding the usefulness of this book pretty limited for my purposes.If Mr. Byrne will write the same book with .Net examples or if Microsoft and Mr. Byrne will release an updated companion CD with .Net examples, the book and its companion CD will be a lot more helpful.

Excellent technical programming book
The only significant criticism I have of this book is that I have to agree, it is indeed very, very similar in content and organization to its predeceessor, "Building Applications with Outlook 2000." For those who also purchased the earlier book, there is a queasy feeling of having bought the same book twice, even though Byrne's version does contain updated content. Microsoft should offer a healthy discount to those people who bought both books.Read more
