1-0 out of 5 stars Priceless - or should be
I am completing my MSIS degree.I was required to use this textbook for one of my classes.I felt the book was possibly appropriate for an engineering computer science program on a "how things work" level but a terrible waste of time for business students. If I want to buy a cell phone I don't care HOW the cell phone works.I only care that it DOES work, and that it is dependable, accurate, reliable, and cost effective.Stop putting the OSI model in these textbooks.Just teach TCP/IP because that's what is used.If you're going to put problems at the end of the chapters, provide solutions to the students.Otherwise, you're just wasting paper because nobody will ever use them. Why work on them if you don't have a solution to compare your answers to?I have spoken to nearly half the people in my class. All agree. This textbook was a terrible choice for our class in the business program.None of us feel we learned anything of value from studying from this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Business Data Communications
This book arrived in a timely manner and in excellent condition. I would purchase fromthis seller again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not an Appropriate Introductory Textbook
A course I took earlier this year used this textbook, and I wasn't too fond of it.The book's explanations were very clinical, and other reviewers are correct in observing that it has many typographical errors (which are very frustrating when trying to solve mathematically inclined equations).

2-0 out of 5 stars Too high-level
I expected this book to be a good technical reference (much like just about every other Sam's Teach Yourself book). The book fails to deliver technical information and is primarily focused on how to perform tasks when USING Sharepoint that just about anyone who can read and click would be able to figure out without the help. This book is overly simplistic and is targeted to the END USER who is not even familiar with using Internet Explorer (several pages spent on what the different features of IE are).

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, thorough; a great reference book
Prior to reading this book, I know nothing about Sharepoint. After reading this book, I felt comfortable and well equipped to administer Sharepoint. It is simple to read and is also thorough in covering all of the components of a Sharepoint site. This book also covered the various tasks of a Sharepoint site administrator which I found to be valuable. A great learning tool for the novice and a great reference tool for the experienced Sharepoint site administrator. I also recommend the "Microsoft Sharepoint 2003 Unleashed, 2nd Edition" book by the same authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only true user's guide I found
After a long search I finally found the perfect SharePoint reference book for the layman, not the techie... I distributed this book to my team at work and everyone is impressed with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" For Every Modeling Job
Silverston's books (volume 1 and volume 2) are a "must-have" for any data modeler at the onset of a new project. The books are nicely organized by subject-area (for example, "People and Organizations" or "Human Resources" or "Health Care") and the table-of-contents and indicies are rich and very helpful. You can use these books as your main reference books for every question, meeting, inquiry regarding your modeling work (ex: "why did you model currency in this way?" Or "How do you model vendor and client relationships?".
5-0 out of 5 stars The Resource Book is just that
We ordered this book because we are about to begin designing a new information system for our company.Silverston's book addresses many of the issues we found ourselves wrestling with (in designing the CRM portion of the system for instance), and it presents options with the pros and cons of each.

2-0 out of 5 stars Two surprises I didn't like
The text of this book was generally good - although it seemed padded out with a massive listing of model metadata. The book comes with a CD.The first surprise was, the CD does not include the Data Definition Language (DDL) for its sample models... there's an extra cost for that.My question to the publisher would be, what good is the CD you provide for free?

5-0 out of 5 stars Right book for me at the right time.
I had done some little test applications utilizing Ajax and/or Atlas prior to reading this book, and I wanted this book to really give a solid base from which to move forward with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Apress
i didnot think that i would like this book because for me apress is famous with their books having lacking style of examples. Normally you find yourself lost in the examples eventough the topic is covered very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help for the new user.
I purchased several copies of the book for my sales team whose technical proficiency was across the board. While all of the material is covered in the online help available from Salesforce.com, several team members felt much more comfortable with a book that they could hold.It is a great help in getting all of the team members to use the same nomenclature which is the first step in any sales "methodology" becoming effective.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dumming it down for an admitted dummy
As a new user to the CRM program, Salesforce.com, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information presented on the website. My first thought was, "I wish somebody would writed a "Dummy" book for the program.I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was being released and ordered my copy immediately.I received my copy shortly and began reading and applying the data presented in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'd be a dummy not to buy this book!
"Salesforce.com for Dummies" is, hands down, the best reference guide for salesforce.com users and administrators alike.Tom Wong has done an excellent job with this book.It is packed with useful tips that will help even the most experienced users and/or administrators get more from Salesforce.com.If you are ready to maximize your investment in Salesforce.com, pick up "Salesforce.com for Dummies."You'd be a dummy not to buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best choice for advanced data modeling.
If you will got this book, you will got perfect template model.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it worth buying a book for only one chapter?
Yes, it is. Because the other chapters have all sorts of useful content as well. This book covers Manufacturing, Telecommunications, Health Care, Insurance, Financial Services, Professional Services, Travel, and e-Commerce. Most companies, even if they aren't in those sectors, use the services of companies that are (or may do a little bit of them - offer insurance on their products, for example), and if you need to include these areas in your model, in more detail than was covered in volume 1 (the core Universal Data Model book), then this is the place to start. If you are in one of these areas, then the specific chapter has a lot of useful stuff (I have worked in Travel, Telecommunications and Professional Services), but it is well worth checking out the other models for ideas that can be re-used in your area.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Time Saver!
The industry models defined in volume 2 have greatly accelerated our data warehouse/mart projects. We have used many of the pre-defined industry models for both internal and external projects. Again, a great time saver allowing us to "jump-start" our data projects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I needed to know quickly how to implement a BI solution and ordered three books:Delivering Business Intelligence with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 by Brian Larsen, Applied Microsoft Analysis Services by Teo Lachev, and this book.Of the tree books, this is the only one I really needed. This book had everything I wanted to know about Analysis Services.I was also impressed with the knowledge and information regarding how to design dimensions and cubes especially when it comes to tough situations such as how to apply security. If you need to implement a BI solution, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for business intelligence....
I have over 9 years of database experience, with about 4 years in MS Data Warehousing experience which included Reporting Services and DTS.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book on Analysis Services
Microsoft has been extending the capabilities of their SQL Server product to make it more useful in enterprise environments. As is often the case, the first version of the product to make it to market isn't everything that the customer might want.In fact the authors make the comment that the user interface was about as complex as driving a nuclear submarine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Handbook???
This book calls itself "handbook". But it does not cover any details a handbook suppose to. Not remotely! A more appropriate title is probably "overview".

1-0 out of 5 stars really really weak
I bought this book based on previous reviews, most of them enthusiastic.
3-0 out of 5 stars Overall good level but somewhat superficial and security pitfalls
First of all, at present time you haven't got many options to choose from regarding WiMax. I purchased Ohrtman's handbook because it seemed to be a solid reference. I agree with this point, but in my opinion, the book only deserves 3 stars due to the following reasons:

4-0 out of 5 stars Mind Hacks: Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain
It's a book very interested about language in mind and speech comprehension. I read a short comment in BBC Focus magazine and I wish to read because it's very easy to learn the misteries of mind in cognitive science applied to language and psichology.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun book
It is not a typical "hacks" book in that it does not tell you how to utilize you brain more effectively or do neat things. It *does*have a lot of exercises that show you cool things on how your brain works with sections describing how your brain works - and a number of experiments (blind spot, Magnet interaction with the brain, word parsing in the the mind, and so on). This book goes very well with a recent title called _Mind Wide Open_ by Steven Johnson.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading
I found this book to be interesting in the way that it presents it's topics. It was insightful and worth the purchase. It is the type of book that you select chapters that interest you as opposed to going cover to cover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SQL ADMIN RESOURCE. PERIOD.
When I have a question about SQL Server this is the first book I turn to. It packs more into its 549 pages than books nearly twice its size, and it does this by focusing on what matters and by being clear and concise.
2-0 out of 5 stars Careful
A pet peeve i have w/ Microsoft books is they just mirror the help files. This admin pocket guide is not much more than regurgitated help files. I was hoping for some useful examples, closer to real life problems & solutions. Not there. Plz use the help files in Books Online to look up topics THEN examine the same topic in this book at a local bookstore BEFORE buying it. (Based on good reviews, i bought this & the Administrator's Guide to SQL Server 2005 by Buck Woody)
5-0 out of 5 stars THE ONE SQL SERVER BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE
I picked up Stanek's SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant and Windows Server 2003 Inside Out at the same time, and have found them both to be excellent. If there's one SQL Server book every developer, programmer and administrator should have, it's this one--I haven't found a better one and I've read half a dozen so far. Stanek has a gift for getting to the point, explaining the most complex concepts in ways that are easy to understand. He seems to pack a 1,000 pages of info into 550 pages. SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant has a strong focus on security, configuration, optimization, and troubleshooting. Throughout the book, there's excellent coverage of T-SQL and I prefer the way T-SQL is covered in context in this book to the way it's covered in the separate T-SQL book I bought (and no longer use). Beyond core database administration, which this book covers better than any other book, it also covers full-text search, indexes, integration services (creating packages), linked servers, distributed transactions, replication, publications, etc. The maintenance chapters are some of the strongest with complete coverage of profiling, monitoring, optimizing, backup, recovery, log shipping, database mirroring, automation, etc. Thank you Mr. Stanek for an excellent book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A Disgrace to Engineering
Probability and Random Processes can be easily approached with grace and elegance so long as the professor and/or writer possess such talents. All too often Albert Leon-Garcia comes across as a total wacko in the possession neither.

1-0 out of 5 stars Run and Hide
I intend to burn this book once the semester is over; it is utterly worthless. My professor was coerced to use the book and assigns homework from the book, but the exams look nothing at all like the homework or material from the book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Far too many examples
The text would be more focused, cheaper dollar-wise, and generally improved if the auther cut out all of the examples. They are essentially worthless.I really enjoy this material, but every time I go to the book as a reference, it's like watching a Golden Girls marathon, completely unbearable.I end up wading through example after example never finding any real substance ...and there is only one chapter on random processes! In short, too many examples make theory hard to find and follow. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow
I'm not a neophyte with CSS, but when I needed to turn an all-table-layout site into an all-CSS-layout site, I needed help. I turned to McFarland's book, which after a quick flip-through at the store seemed to hit exactly what I needed. Literally two pages of reading covered me, and I was off and running. But when I started reading the rest I was amazed at how much I didn't know about CSS. I really appreciate the real-world focus on browsers like IE5-6, and the inclusion of specific fixes for those CSS-unfriendly browsers. The fact that this book is SO recent - mid-2006 - means it's as up-to-date as a printed publication possible could be. While I'm sure the lengthy tutorials would be useful for someone progressively learning CSS, I like the book for it's logical organization, allowing me to flip to the bit I need, quickly see examples of what's going on (the ample screen shots are appropriate for a visual medium like CSS), and get back to work. I don't buy many computer books (for all that I've written several), but this one earns a permanent place not on my bookshelf, but right on my desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent missing manual
This is another fine addition to the Missing Manual series. CSS is easier than it sounds and now I think I understand it. MacFarland makes it all clear. This whole series is excellent - books for those of us who still like our manuals on paper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Straight-forward, Professional Approach to CSS
Overall, the book is a great read and recommended for anyone serious about designing professional websites. The chapters are broken up appropriately giving readers a gradual progression into the world of Cascading Style Sheets without too much detail at once.A major issue encountered in the book were the random passages scattered throughout where the author made recommendations that subsequent sections was boring and could be skipped.Personally I feel this puts the reader into a disgruntled state of mind.I liked how David put in the tutorials at the end of each chapter (except chapter 1) and these helped a lot clarify the material and how to put that material to use.I was disappointed though that the book did not present exercises for the reader to try out on their own at the end of each chapter. There were some exercises given by David but they were not consistent throughout the book (most chapters didn't have them). Finally I really enjoyed the overall pace of the book and found Appendix A with the entire CSS property list to be most helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DAM good book
Extremely usefull roadmap to navigating the new territory of digital workflow. If you are a professional photographer shooting digitally, this book is the essential guide toeverything you need to capitalize on digital's opportunity and avoid time consuming mistakes.I feel like an evangelist, as I've bought a handfull of copies for colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a great guide to managing thousands of photos
One of the most difficult realities of managing thousands of digital photo images is how to label them in a consitent manner so that you can easily retrieve photos and keep track of photos that have been altered. Another important consideration is if you will be able to read the information as software and hardware changes occur. Peter Krogh makes logical suggestions and tells you why he chose to label an image in a particular manner. The DAM Book also has great suggestions on backing up photos. I have always struggled with labeling/numbering consistency, Peter Krogh makes it all very logical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Photographers
Any photographer who is serious about their craft needs to take a good look at The DAM Book. This book was written by a true professional that knows their stuff and will assist you in getting your photos from the the boxes and boxes scattered no doubt throughout your house and into the digital repository that is a better place to store, access, and retrieve the precious prints that you work so hard on producing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A+ in the NW and Data Comm hard to find books.
The subject of Networking and Data communication is hard to teach and the good books are also hard to find.
2-0 out of 5 stars For CE/EE users only!
This book is great if you are a CE/EE and want to get into all the little details around network protocols and how the hardware talks to each other. As a CS major (and Principal Software Engineer at my company) I have never had to go to the level this book pushes things at and it reminded me of where the computer industry was back in the early 70's. Many of the problems talk about teletypes and "high speed 2400 baud terminals" like they were developed just the other day.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too many topics too little time
There were a lot of interesting topics covered in this book, but unfortunately because of the volume of material that the author attempted to include, there was little on any one subject.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as "Complete" as I hoped
I was really wanting something that would show a step by step guide to building a USB device (even if all it did was turn on and off an LED) but this book doesn't really show how to actually BUILD anything. It's more about the principles/standars for USB from both the hardware and software side, and some examples on how to connect to and use an HID USB device.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book really explains USB in detail, and Jan Axelson seems to really know what he is talking about.I am impressed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not "Everything You Need"...
My use of the book was primarily as a second opinion, against which I could check my interpretations of the USBv2.0 specification. In a few instances, this was very useful (i.e., clarifying exactly what is meant by the terms transaction, packet, handshake, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars SBS2003 R2 - direct, pertinent, useful
I found this book to be an excellent one volume resource on the variety of features and functionality offered in SBS.
5-0 out of 5 stars Companion book for even non R2ers
While this book is called the SBS 2003 R2 companion book, and is indeed a companion to the R2 product, even if you don't have R2, but merely SBS 2003 SP1, this is an excellent resource and should actually be purchased instead of the original SBS companion book. The "must have" features for non R2 owners include the chapters on setting up secure wireless and the ISA content. The "must have" stuff for R2 era owners obviously include the WSUS information.
