3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting if you can get past the horrible writing....
This guy is definitely a geek and NOT an English major. The stories are interesting and frightening if you can get past the constant run on sentences and poor grammar.Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone with an interest in computer security
While these stories describe different exploits they all provide different lessons and are from that POV well worthwhile.Several of the stories are quite funny (the hacked Coke machine for instance--the password jumped out at me as soon as they said no one could ever guess it) but still worth while. There is too much tendency to depend on hardware solutions when folks don't realise that those are computers too and they can be hacked just as easily or even more so than a PC.Some of the stories are probably exaggerated as Mitnick admits he was unable to verify all of them particularly the shorts at the end of the book. Some of chapter 10 is probably exaggerated but I used to do pen tests and its certainly overall credible.A very valuable book overall.I can sympathise when some of the "white hat" security experts turn vigilante and deface websites etc. out of frustration. The reason that I left the field was because often my big decision after an audit was "do I just dust off the report I did 2 years ago or do I write a new one" because more often than not nothing had changed and none of the holes had been plugged. Most of the times I wrote a new report were because new vulnerabilities had been added.

4-0 out of 5 stars Art of Intrusion Review
Written by Kevin D. Mitnick and William L. Simon, The Art of Intrusion is a unique book showcasing true short stories submitted by hackers telling about the various hacks they have done. With everything from cheating at Las Vegas casinos to breaking into bank computer systems, the book is both educational and entertaining. After each story, ex-hacker Kevin Mitnick gives advice on how to prevent intrusions like the ones described in the book from happening to you or your business, as well as some insight on why the systems were so vulnerable in the first place. It is like a suspense novel for the computer-savvy. If you want to be entertained and learn something new each time you pick up the book, you can't go wrong with The Art of Intrusion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is truly excellent and unparalleled in detail
I have owned this book for at least seven years and have made a couple of good attempts to read/study it with some success as it may not be the best first book for programming the Win32 API although it certainly treats the subject in excruciating detail and with insights garnered by the two authors who are two of the most consummately professional programmers in the world - Brent Rector and Joseph Newcomer. For example Herb Schildt's Programming Windows 98 from the Ground Up teaches WIN32 programming and I find myself more productive in less time studying that book, even though WIN32 programming teaches with a philosophy that one is (ultimately) going to be writing large multifile programs, and this philosophy isn't apparent in Schildt's book. Additionally, an added bonus of Win32 Programming are the insights one gets into writing more robust and professional code - the C code (and there is a lot of it - 140,000 lines included on the CD ROM) has been written by the very best programmers.Additionally, the treatment of each topic is probably more in depth in this book - one example being the discussion of the GDI. More advanced topics included are chapters on writing a DLL, writing an MDI application, and writing multithreading applications. Finally, at 1500 pages the book is reference-like and also like a textbook thus I would assume that it may well take the better part of a year to study each chapter and the associated applications, making it one of the finest and most comprehensive books ever written on WIN32 API programming. I paid $50 for it at UCLA and the book has stood the test of time and proves to be an invaluable work well worth the cost. Finally, this book would seemingly rank among the most professional and scientific computer science/programming titles ever written - certainly it would be one of the most massive - the index is around 200 pages long in itself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs editting
Very good on the level of detail, and incredible on the pitfalls and specific problems they found when actually writing the code for the examples.Be careful, though - a number of the tables (and even some of the printed code samples) contain typos and other minor errors (like missing headings, making one table pretty useless!).You can figure out what's wrong, but if you just use this as a reference and happen to hit a section with an error you might not catch it without reading the accompanying text.I read it through, rather than as a reference, and it was clear which parts of the text had only been lightly checked for the latest edition.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, not for beginners
If you are an experienced Win32 programmer looking for a good reference, or you learned MFC but want to know what's going on under the hood, this is the book for you.If you are a beginner looking for a book to teach you how to program Windows, do not get this book.Lots of tables, just the right amount of code examples, lots of real-world advice, and a 200-page index. This book does not cover MFC. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Respectable coverage on Windows Security, from trustworthy folks
Ben and Brian, (my ex-Microsoft colleagues) have done a great job at providing well-rounded, valuable and actionable coverage of almost all aspects of Windows Security. Good job guys!
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific update to excellent security guide!
I have previously done a review of the First Edition of the Microsoft Windows Security Resource Kit which I was very impressed with. All what I said for that book still applies. The first book applied to Windows 2000 and XP Pro. Since then there has been a major upgrade for XP in SP2 and the introduction of Windows 2003 which the Second Edition covers. As with the first book this edition is great for anyone that wants to learn how to secure their Windows 2000/2003/XP Pro operating systems/networks and is geared mostly to administrator types though anyone with such interest including power users will find it extremely helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for CCNP and Labs
Not only am I a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor, I am one of the official reviewers as listed inside this book.I spent almost a year working with the authors to make sure this book was error free, and full of realistic lab exercises. My students have used this book successfully for over 4 years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practically useful, well explained details (Cisco Press pls respond)
The guides were a great learning experience to me with a lot of practically useful well explained details. The following comment I sent a few times to Cisco Press - they invite you to do so at the beginning of the book - to which I never ever got a reply which is a bit disappointing for a publisher of such great books. Users who study these books may check if my findings are right.;-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date .... not useful anymore
this books needs two things desparately:
4-0 out of 5 stars It's very practical
It's a very practical, very well informed book. The author quoted
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful at large but confusing here and there
Even four years after its publishing date, I've found Sterne's book on Web Metrics helpful. For the most part, he's focused on business metrics applied to the web, which shields his work from obsolescence for the most part. However, when he gets into topics such as CRM and also in other places throughout the book, it feels as if he could have used a bit more editing, as he rambles and jumps between topics in a way that is more confusing than helpful. It deserves four stars, loosing one star over his occasional rambling. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Explanations but not Practical
This book has generally good easily digestible explanations for Exchange 2003.I really appreciate the informal down-to-Earth style and discussion of a lot of pieces. I was especially happy to see some good coverage of LDAP, IMAP, and POP configuration, which is seldom adequately covered in other Exchange books.
4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, not too bad
I would hardly consider this book "Mastering Exchange" but the author does take the time to step you through all the property pages and settings so you at least get a basic idea of what it all means. You will have a solid basic understanding when you are done but you certainly won't be a master by any stretch of the imagination. I found several errors throughout the book specifically related to Windows and networking. The author should stick to Exchange because when the topic shifts to something else, I had my doubts about what I was reading. For instance, I believe the author stated that in an NT 4.0 Domain, if a PDC goes down, the other DC's elect a new one. WHAT!!!! Maybe a browser, but not a PDC. Its been a while since I read the book but I am pretty sure I read that in a side bar. As I said, overall, not bad if you what a basic intro to Exchange 2003. The title should be changed to Exchange 2003 basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor writing style
Maybe the content of this book is ok, but the writer has constant urge to put useless text lines and useless personal opinions between the technical explenations. This shouldn't be a story book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive (2nd Edition)
Well done compilation that is approachable while covering a lot of ground. If you need one book that touches on all the technology aspects of the cable industry and can fit on your bookshelf, this is it. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial and reference
This book is a remarkable survey of a very broad field. It is necessarily somewhat superficial in its coverage of some of the more abstruse topics, but provides the necessary essentials an engineer needs to operate in the cable television environment.Unlike mere compendia of archival publications, this book has a consistent pedagogical viewpoint and notation. It is oriented towards practicing engineers, providing just enough theory to support successful problem solving.I recommend it to anyone working in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last a fully comprehensive CATV handbook
In a quick growing market, and with daily technological improvements like cable television, the lack of a thoroughly comprehensive compilation was being noticed. This book, a kind of Bible for that specific area of telecommunications engineering, could approach a vast variety of technical and operational issues for the CATV industry. A vade mecum (lat. goes with me, means essential) for every CATV engineer or technician. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars nice chapter on the development of the Internet
Doyle gives us a very understandable discourse on the OSPF and IS-IS routing methods. These are implemented by Cisco and Juniper routers. Cisco dominates the networking arena, while Juniper is one of the larger secondary players. So understanding OSPF and IS-IS is vital if your duties involve administering networks using those companies' devices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information Presented, clear and concise
So basically I know very little about OSPF and nothing about IS-IS.I haven't finished reading the book yet (about 1/4 through it) but, its great so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content Str
Are you overwhelmed with the need to create more content, faster, customized for more customers, and for more media than ever before?Do you consider storing documentation on a server as an effective a content management system? Do you want to learn how content management will empower your organization? The answer to these questions and many more is covered in Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content Strategy by Ann Rockley with Pamela Kostur and Steve Manning of The Rockley Group. The Rockley Group is one of the leading providers of content management methodologies. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Content Management projects
This book is an absolute must for Content Management projects. It touches all of the important aspects: Technical, functional and process. There is something for all stakeholders in a EMS/CMS project.2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title...really unifed content creation
I was disappointed that the book was really focused on how to create reusable elements that go into product information such as data sheets, marketing collateral, technical support, etc.It focused on auditing the content, finding the reusability elements across departments, then designing an appropriate hierarchy on top of a content management system. It assumed that content drives the information architecture when in most applications it is the business processes that drive the architecture. It ignored the majority of enterprise content like email, word docs, design specs, forms, etc. that make up the real information content of the enterprise.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as you can get for a dry subject
This is one of the better study aids, but as with all study aids it is boring to read.It may just be me, but I hate to read anything like this, but I have to keep my certs. It is up to date with the latest verion of the test and very informative. It will make a great companion to use along side the bigger complete CCNA test prep books and also to use in the field when you need to remember those odd commands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for CCNA
it is an excellent book for your preparation for the CCNA.it is also very useful for the memorizing the commands that most used in the router confiruation in your job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
This is a good resource to study with for the CCNA.It contains almost all of the commands that should be known for the test, and then some. 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting cons, but repetitive and ego-trippy
Mitnick has his own reputation to live up to with this book, which sets a pretty high bar for the audience who knows him as the "World's Most Notorious Hacker."Unfortunately, while he knows the material cold, his skills as an author are less stellar.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book
This book seriously highlights the stupidity of people in the world. It shows how clever people go very far by asking basic questions to get what and where they want. The samples are entertaining and worth reading. This is some great education for the naive people of the world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but weak in writing skill and quality of advice
I enjoyed the first more-than-half of the book which dealt with various kinds of social engineering attacks. Each was at least plausible and usually interesting.I was constantly aware, however, that the titles of the chapters only vaguely correlated to the examples given: there must be a better way to structure the content (possibly starting with defining various kinds of attacks then identifying those techniques as they come up in the examples.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Book with Code that Works and Compiles
The code works and compiles fine with Visual Studio 6.0. The reader who said he had problems with Visual Studio 2005 obviously didn't read the requirements for using the code. The book provides lots of useful code for implementing complex models such as the HJM and Libor Market Models.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book mildly useful, the code is a piece of junk
I used this book for my course in Derivatives Pricing and I faced countless problems in compiling the source code.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book to Implement Models
I found this book to be quite useful especially in my work working on the trading desk in NYC for one of the major tier one investment firms. I have been able to adapt a lot of the code for use in our systems. The author provides many useful libraries and routines that can be modified for pricing, hedging, and trading.
