4-0 out of 5 stars beginners level
I'm not writing this to discredit the book. I think it is very well done. I just think it should be made clear that this is a beginners level book. There is a lot of emphasis placed on translating cat os into native. There are also numerous examples of how to configure various topologies. I think it is very well done. However, anybody who can read and use the univercd, will have a wealth of knowledge, far beyond what can be contained in this book, within a few mouse clicks.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good book at showing Cat configs
CiscoPress's "Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration" by Hucaby and McQuerry is a very strong attempt at documenting the configuration implementations of Cisco switches.Any Cisco Switching book is going to need to make a decision as soon as the first page - and that is how best to document the two separate and totally different versions of Cisco Catalyst operating systems - COS and OS.This book takes a different tact - and one that I think works very well.Instead of splitting up the two OS domains and describing each in their own respective sections - the authors have decided to show how to implement both types of commands at the same time. This little difference is profound in the way it helps demonstrate the use of each command and eliminates redundancy found in other all-in-one switching books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Everyday Switch Administrators
I am a network engineer and use the Catalyst 2900, 2950, 3500 and the 4000's on a daily basis. We do a lot of VLAN configurations, trunking using 801.q, static port access, along with other various switch configs. This book has been indispensable for my daily routines. There has not once been an instant where I couldn't find the answer to what I was trying to accomplish when configuring a Cisco Catalyst Switch. This also gives you the commands for COS and IOS and also tells you which switch supports what and which switch doesn't (example: the Catalyst 2950 supports 801.q by default, where others support ISL by default). I highly recommend this book for all your switching administrative needs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated beyond usefulness.
Be advised:this book may have been relevant a couple years ago, but not anymore.ISACA has updated and slightly reorganized the exam.I believe this book actually interferred with my prep. The ISACA study guides and applicable experience are plenty to pass this exam (worked for me).Good luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars CISSP or CISM?
I bought this book because there is no other book available (prep guide) that covers the CISM.As I read through the book there is an explicit sentence that reads "to better prepare you for the CISSP exam"; which test is this preg guide for?If you're going to cut and paste from similar works you've done in the past at least do the readers a favor and use the find/replace all function :).Overall it was a good read and I'll keep it around as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect, and surely the best prepguidethere is available
I've used two preparation guides, this one and the one from Sybex. MSPress is definitely the best of these two books. Covers it all, the sybex version is too superficial and just does not cover it all, it actually lacks some important material.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Book Available but not without faults
I used this book as a primary study guide for the 2003 upgrade exams and although it doesn't cover all the material, it is an excellent book and in my humble opinion the single best source of prepartion.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This book covers the essentials skills to upgrade to your certification to Windows Server 2003.However, it does cover many topics that you already knew from your Windows 2000 experience, which sometimes are topics you don't want to read about because for the most part, you expected to read only about the improvements and changes from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003.In spite of this, it is a GREAT source of information for people with little experience with Windows 2000. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I don't like it because ...
I bought this book with great hope. I have spent the past 12 odd years of my career working on various networking protocols. But, I had never worked on network management systems. I figured I could use a good book about network management. Looking at the TOC and the author's info (the author teaches at GaTech), I figured I wouldn't go wrong if I read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Covers the topic well
This is a good book to buy that covers the topic of NM.It is packed with examples and useful information and references. It covers the old standards and it shows how the standard has progress over the years. The references are great also; b/c there is so much to say about this topic.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Advanced Network Management Concepts

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) does exactly what its name implies--it routes traffic efficiently from its origin on one network to its destination on another. Most typically, it's the protocol that provides a private network with Internet connectivity. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great BGP book, but not the first book for the CCIE
I have always felt that I am part of the small minority that just does not see the beauty of this book if studying for the CCIE.I have, for years, read other's comments on the how Halabi's "Internet Routing Arch" is a `must have', yet I still have not found a similar reason why. While I do feel that the book does (probably) the best job at explaining BGP and how to implement BGP in a Cisco-centric world, I have not discovered the value for the CCIE.I would much rather spend my time with CiscoPress's "Routing TCP/IP" Volume 2, by Jeff Doyle and Jennifer DeHaven Carroll than this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to unfold the mysteries of BGP
Internet Routing Architectures is considered the BGP4 handbook and rightfully so. I found the overall composition easy to read. Even though the book is aimed at varying levels of expertise, it does not assume any level of knowledge in TCP/IP or routing. It explains all the concepts, from the simplest one right up to the most demanding, in a fluent way. The book works hard not to withhold protocol details and design-oriented information, while at the same time realizing that building general understanding comes first. An in depth look at BGP is supplied here from the theory aspect, if you need actual configurations and commands I suggest also:
3-0 out of 5 stars Configuring BGP-4 on Cisco Devices
This is a good book, let there be no doubt about it.But in my opinion it goes beyond the scope of the 682-661 exam for which purpose I bought it.However, every ISP backbone routing engineer should have this book with him and use it as a dictionary in case of.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biased to Schneier's algorithms
This can be an annoying book for a serious developer, but I do know Writing a secure cryptosystem is very hard. People should be aware that it is hard, and they are likely to make mistakes. It isn't something that should be attempted lightly. If you are doing some actual work, it's not a good one. The book does not cover sufficient mathematic knowledge, and the edit is bit horrible as well. The authors chose to support their own algorithm shedding less light on AES and even RSA. That really made me stop reading this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Self contradictory and selflauding
From the very first pages, authors emphasize the need for public algorithms and peer review. Yet, the book is full of suggestions that appear first time in the book. They even take time to give fancy names to their new proposals. It is typical to see things like "While writing this chaper we came up with this new random number generator...". Well, the authors could have used some of public scrutiny they are so fond of.
3-0 out of 5 stars Must be used with Applied Cryptography
As one other reader pointed out this book can be called Applied Cryptography Light. It is true, it gives you more theory and very little math. I did not like this book by itself since I was interested in actual implementation and i wanted to see full algorithms and math. I did end up buying Applied Cryptography and those 2 books combined provide an excellent reference. I was not able to give more than 3 stars since I did not feel i got any knowledge out of this book to be able to apply it in real life except reading: "Cryptography is hard, you might need to hire an expert..." while I want to become an expert myself one day! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book explaining all the secret s of secure communication
Cryptography Decrypted is an easy to read and fun book that explains how cryptography has evolved from Caesar's time to now. The author goes over how encryption is used in all areas of communication, and what sequential systems have deveoped to stop hacker attacks along the way. It is detailed but fun to read, and explains how all the enigmatic parts, like Private Keys, Public Keys, Secret Keys, Digital Signatures, SMIME, PGP, RSA, SHA-1 ect. all fit together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE BEST!!!
This book is phenomenal! I skimmed through countless books on cryptography before I settled on this one. The authors Mel and Baker have the unique ability to make a complex subject like cryptography completely accessible even to the mathematically challenged. This book is a MUST READ! If you work in the IT Security or Network Design field, this book gives you all the background you need to be more effective in your job without having the turgid style of most crypto books. It really does a fantastic job of explaining all the basic building blocks of cryptography as well as suites like SSL and IPSEC in plain everyday language. You will not be disappointed with this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreadful Book - Avoid
I haven't taken the exam yet, so I can't comment on the appropriatness of the book to the exam, but my biggest gripe is the ridiculous number of errors in this book. Even with the official list of errata at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830785, I've lost count of the number of additional errors. If you do the exercises and think "why isn't this working?", you've hit yet another error. My advice: demand a refund immediately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great subject material, unevenly covered
I had mixed feelings reading this book. Some sections were so good I was saying, "Bravo, well done" while other sections were so bad, I felt sorry for anyone trying to learn by reading them. (E.g. Ch4 on frequency domain modeling.) The book covers extremely useful material, but in an uneven way. It will especially appeal to readers who want simplified discussions of the ideas rather than deeper more theoretical discussions. For example, crosstalk --one of the most important topics, is covered in a very light manner, recommending use of simulators to obtain accurate results. Compare this with the coverage of the same subject in the remarkable book "Electromagnetic Compatibility" by Clayton Paul. Now, that book is "advanced" and "magical". This book doesn't get into any deep discussions of the fundamentals. It says that current flows in a loop, and inductance is related to loop area. Simple enough.Yet, how do we explain the inductance of the pin of an IC package, which is definitely not a loop? How is the energy-based definition of inductance used by simulators related to this simple definition? Even more fundamental, given that voltage can't be defined in a region where the magnetic field is changing, how come we can use the concept of voltage? (Read Paul Clayton for discussing all these concepts in great detail.) 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have reference for ALL digital design engineers
After ploughing through this book, I found it to be a treasure trove of useful information. It's well layed out, and well explained. As with their first "black magic text", it's full of helpful hints, guides, and rule'o'thumbs that will get you up to speed quickly so you can apply them and get expected results from your design. Well done Mr Johnson and Mr Graham, another excellent reference! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a to be updated
Used it as a text book, mainly a reference. With communications rapidly changing it must be difficult to continually update. It is a fair background book, but it doesn't offer much else

2-0 out of 5 stars Book is too dated to be effective in emerging technologies.
Although updated in 1994, most of the text material discusses old mainframe and terminal applications and was likely written during earliereditions of the text.Reading it did not provide a good basis for the telecommunications area, because it is so dated. In its day, it must have been a great text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering, Clear, and Consise
I have to say that this book is simply amazing.I have searched the longest to clearly understand not just about PKI, but actually how to implement it, and was always referred to tombs of mathematical theory and such. This book demystifies PKI infrastructure in clear and concise explanations (but not overkill though), and has a lot of material on how to practically implement a variety of PKI architectures that can fit small businesses to huge enterprise corporations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bset book I've seen on PKI and certificate management
Brian Komar tackles, what I've seen countless other authors refer to as a difficult to understand subject matter. It appearantly took a whole team at Microsoft to explain it to him, but it looks like he got it right.Of the many books I've read that address certificates and PKI this is the only one I've seen that presents a complete picture, where I didn't walk away wondering... but how does this part of it work, or why did they do that this way.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best PKI implementation guide
This is by far the best reference out there for understanding PKI in general and implementing Microsoft Windows Server 2003 CA infrastructure. Komar's depth of knowledge and breadth of experience clearly shows. Found the description of CAPolicy.INF files and sample files and scripts in this book extremely useful - that alone saved me a lot of time. And it doesn't end there...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anybody working on Unix Env
This is the best pocket reference book that you can get. Its been really helpful to me in a lot of occasions when you just know that there is a command to do it but just cannot remember what the command is. Would definitely say a must to anybody starting or already working with Unix/Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux Companion
If you are new to Linux like me and would like to learn Linux in a week then this book is a must have along with "Linux for Dummies" by LeBlance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Layer 2 and Layer 3 - need search no longer
"Interconnections 2nd Edition - Bridges, Routers Switches and Internetworking Protocols" by Radia Perlman is simply a magnificent book. This book is a one-stop introduction to both Layer 2 and Layer 3 of the OSI model. This book will not teach you how to configure equipment - but what this book will teach you is how different protocols interact with each other. Most books only focus on either layer 2 or layer 3, but this is the one book that discusses both layers better than most books discuss each layer individually!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginners and Experts
This book is a fantastic voyage through the world of networking. For newbies, it presents complex ideas in an easy-to-understand and entertaining way, keeping you away from an alphabet soup of acronyms. But, it also appeals to experts as well, with its insider's view of the design of various network protocols.Even with many years of networking under my belt, I found myself reading this book constantly saying, "So, that's why they did it that way!"The wealth of information in this book should not be overlooked. The writing style is also crisp, clear, and highly engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from the Core series! Awsome job!
This is an excellent book for all Security Practitioners. FromIdentity Managment to Mutli-factor athentication this book provides examples and clear description of many important concepts. The bookcovers enterprise patterns for access contol, federatation and identity management. Like the J2ee patterns, I see this book being an important/practical addition for the security community.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic security book for java guys
I picked this book to read about using smartcard and biometrics in j2ee application. I am really amazed to see, this is the only book in the market to illustrate how to put together all three factors of authentication in a j2ee application. More compelling, the authors did a terrific job to cover every possible security option that adds value to j2ee application. The patterns and best practices for application security architecture and design strategies for the presentation tier, business tier, and Webservices tier of j2ee platform are very promising and helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for All Security Architects
I have found all the Sun "Core" Java books to be at cut above, but this one differs in that while obviously Java-centric, much of the patterns dicussed are relevant to all development platforms. I'd recommend this book to developers and architects of web services and web applications regardless of their preferred development environment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Many topics, but not an in-depth reference
Internetworking with TCP/IP does a very good job introducing almost all relevant topics about TCP/IP networking you should hear of. Thus, it deserves 4 stars because it succeeds in providing an *INTRODUCTORY* guide to this field.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on TCP/IP I've ever read
I highly recommend this book to whoever wants to have solid understanding of TCP/IP.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good detailed explanation
Thick book about linux system socket programming. The protocol design and implementation of different servers, including the code details of TCP/UDP, NFS, Telnet, RTP/RTCP video/audio streaming applications are worthable and understandable upon reading. The contents can still be found useful even in Win32 platform. ... Read more

This CiscoPress book is quite an outsider compared to other more classical CiscoPress material. It does not talk about networking itself but about how to build
