2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, boring, boring
Did I tell you the book was boring?
4-0 out of 5 stars Philosophical (Textbook) exposition of InfoSec
If you're looking to get down into the nitty-gritty of infosec, for ways and methods of securing networks and systems, then this probably isn't the book you need. This is a textbook and so it overs a fairly high level viewpoint, even philosophical approach, to infosec. The granualarity just isn't there for the practising person to gain much from this in a substantive way.

This is a must have book for anyone doing COM programming. The great Don Box is a brilliant developer and an excellent writer. This book covers all aspects of COM and gives the reader the critical information that is clouded by the Microsoft tools.

After reading this book, only two possibilities exist.Either Don Box has made COM more difficult than it needs to be, or it really is this difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Technical Book
This is a great book. It is very informative and very useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage, well written
I found this book to be both comprehensive and well written. It was recommended to me by a very experienced AIX user. I am much less experienced, but I also found the book very helpful- it has a good mix of information, and is presented in a logical, well formatted way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Techno shock
I used AIX in the mid 90's. I got pretty good at installations, SNA services, peripherals and applications. Since them I switched to HP/UX and moves from version 9 to 10 to 11; so I am familiar with today's systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kelly McGrew
"Indispensable" is the one word which best describes this work.(In the interest of full disclosure, I've known Christina Hattingh for several years. As I've written in the acknowledgements of my books she is "one of the finest engineers I've known and worked with."I've never met Tim Szigeti.)
5-0 out of 5 stars A solid reference for the enterprise user and service-provider alike!
When this book first arrived at my doorstep, I figured it would be a quick read, a review of information I was already fairly comfortable with, and just another presentation of the same-old material. I couldn't have been more wrong! Over the lastseveral months, a number of hours have been devoted to leafing through the pages of valuable information, learning something new every time! Szigeti and Hattingh have done a superb job in putting this reference together. From the basic fundamental concepts of QoS, to the tuning and optimization of QoS policies, this book covers it all pretty well. QoS design considerations, both on the campus as well as the WAN, are covered in a way that is easy to understand. A significant amount of material is dedicated to explaining QoS support on the various models of Cisco Catalyst switches, with a solid breakdown of each.A number ofcase studies guide you through real-world examples of how QoS technologies are best leveraged, in clear, concise detail. The at-a-glance guides in the back of the book are also good reference material. For the enterprise user and service provider alike, this guide will prove to be a valuable tool when tackling in the toughest of QoS tasks. I would give this book a solid 5 on the scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being amazing! Great job with this book, keep up the good work!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any network engineer
Excellent book. Well written and the material is very well presented. It covers the different QoS technologies with very good examples and explanations. This is a "must have" to any network engineer that is planning to design, deploy and maitain QoS in a networking infrastructure. ... Read more

The second edition of Ed Skoudis and Tom Liston's COUNTER HACK RELOADEDreturns a primary system administrator's resource to new levels, continuing the attack on destructive hacks with a counter-hack guide which remains useful because over half the material in this edition has been revamped and updated to reflect the latest hacker techniques. Larry Magid's book is the first excellent source for parents to figure out what their kids are doing on MySpace. It teaches parents how to get their own MySpace account, not to spy on their children, but to see what this world is all about. It has lots of good advice for parents although I wish the author would have spent less time on telling parents how to pimp their MySpace page and more on how to talk to their children about safety and particularly about online friendships. All in all, though, a good, valuable read. ... Editorial Review

Among network designers and administrators, wired Ethernet is a known quantity. Plenty is known about how to build good twisted-pair network infrastructures, how to keep them secure, and how to monitor their excess capacity. Not so for the wireless Ethernet networks (built around the IEEE 802.11x standards)--these hold much more mystery for even experienced network designers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible 802.11 book
I tend not to read and review books on as broad a subject as "wireless networking."I've read and reviewed wireless security books like Real 802.11 Security and Wi-Foo, but 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Ed (8WN2E) was a departure for me.Thankfully, 8WN2E is an incredible book.It exceeded my expectations and definitely earned its "Definitive Guide" status.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide To Wireless Networks
'802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide' by Matthew Gast is a very comprehensive look at wireless networks from top to bottom.Spanning 600+ pages, this is an extensive look at one of the most important technologies of the last 50 years. No matter where you are on this planet, wireless networking has changed your life and no doubt it will continue to expand as we humans invent and adapt all over the planet.Buyer beware, this guide is not for the basic reader, rather it is a thorough look at the technology and it can get confusing at times!
5-0 out of 5 stars Your Guid to Wi-Fi
Gast's comprehensive coverage of the 802.11 standard is definitly worthy of the title 'definitive guide'.The reading is fairly fast paced and written in such a way that readers can skip to certain chapters and gain insight on the high level of the protocol with previous knowledge of the lower chapters. For example, one can read about 802.1X and its application to Wi-Fi without needing to read previous chapters as the author provides any re-cap that will be needed from earlier chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest thing since sliced bread
When Microsoft took an elegant simple schema from UNIX and redesigned it into a convoluted might mare called "Active Directory" it was time for this book. Turns out that "Active Directory" is not active or a directory; who would have guessed? Well this book starts you off with correcting concepts and even lets you know that with the new terminology that the definition of "domain" has been changed.5-0 out of 5 stars A great little book
One of my students told me about this book and brought it to class. I hadn't expected so much technical content from a Dummies book. This little book really should be the starting point for anyone interested in Active Directory.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent book of negligible usefulness
The fantastic complexity of Windows 2000 Active Directory almost makes the title of this book an oxymoron. Win2K presents a huge paradigm shift to network administrators, since the Active Directory is a completely new, radically different beast from what Windows NT was. Understanding AD and how it works takes patience...it isn't accidental that there are 1000+ page books out there on setting up and maintaining an AD infrastructure. This book doesn't aim to help you do specific tasks in AD, but what it does very well is explain in basic terms what AD is and does, how it it structured, and give you the frame of reference you need before you delve further in. But I'm not sure how many people need to [pay] for this book when there are other books out there that deal much more extensively in the workings of AD. The bottom line is that computer enthusiasts curious about the central feature of Win2K and newbie administrators of Win2K who have little or no experience with NT4 will find it a useful primer on AD. For anyone else, it's probably better to put the [money] toward one of the more detailed, albeit less plainspoken, AD guides. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still enough to pass the CISSP
I sat for and passed the CISSP test in January 2006.I used the following resources to help in passing the CISSP:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CISSP Book and CDROM - Highly Recommended.
Dear All, I recently completed my CISSP review studies, passed the exam, and completed the CISSP endorsement process. This is a very worth while endeavor and, as someone with many years of Internet security and risk management experience, I highly recommend the CISSP certification process for everyone.Reviewing the 10common bodies of knowledge (CBK) has value for everyone in the IT business and I am very pleased to have taken the time to review the material and complete the exam. For my self-study review, I purchased four books via Amazon: (1) The CISSP Pre Guide - Gold Edition by Ronald L. Krutz and Russell Dean Vines, (2) All-In-One CISSP Exam Guide, Third Edition by Shon Harris, (3) Official(ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam by Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare, and (4) CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg. Each of these texts came with a CDROM for practicing test questions on a Windows PC and covered the 10 CISSP CBKs. I found the first three CISSP books in my list to be helpful. Of those three, the most helpful was The CISSP Prep Guide- Gold Edition by Krutz and Vines. This book is concise, well written, and easy to read. The CDROM is excellent and nearly error free. The text is well thought out and informative. I also recommend Shon Harris' book, with reservation. I found it hard to get to the required CISSP information, at times, due to the attempts at humor in the book. The CDROM of sample test questions were also very good, albeit not as rich in features as the book by Krutz and Vines. The Official(ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Examby Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare was a disappointment. This book read just like a cut-and-paste from the Internet and other documents; and the companion CDROM was full of errors and omissions. After a while I stopped using this text book and focused on the first two.I am sorry to say that CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg was a complete disappointment from every perspective. The CDROM example tests were riddled with errors and omissions. For those interested in my self-study technique, I took each book and studied one (sometimes two) of each of the CBK chapters each day. Then, I repeated the same process for each of the other books, except for the book by Bragg, which was dropped for reasons mentioned. I took all the sample tests repeatedly, before and after and then again.I must have practiced between 4000-5000 sample questions. It was challenging and enjoyable. In summary, I highly recommend Krutz and Vines and also recommend, with reservation, the book by Shon Harris. No single book can cover the entire CBK of the CISSP. The more you study, the better.Best of luck on your CISSP studies. The CISSP is certainly an experience that will improve your knowledge of the field of IT security and benefit the profession at-large.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goes into details
This is a great book. Unlike many other CISSP books, the book goes into details of each topic. For example, chapter 2 of the books provide great details on the Kerberos Protocol, and describes it better that any other CISSP book. The description was so good that it reminded of university days, when we had to learn various algorithm/protocols inside-out. I would recommend this book to anyone. http://validate.sf.net ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Money
This book lived up to and surpassed my expectations.
4-0 out of 5 stars A solid book on data-binding
Before this book, I had very little Windows Forms 1.0/1.1 experience. So, I can't speak to how well it works for people who are moving from the 1.0/1.1 world into 2.0. But for those starting with Windows Forms 2.0, this covers data binding to a depth I doubt will be surpassed by any other source. Ever.
3-0 out of 5 stars As long as you only want to bind to a data base.
This book (as the title suggests) is strongly geared towards data binding in the context of "Smart Clients."From this book, I take "Smart Client" to mean that you are only showing tabular data directly from databases. He spends 80% of the book talking about binding to data bases with the DataGridView control.Because of this, other aspects of data binding are neglected.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener
You think your data is safe, your website secured, your code foolproof.... think again. If you haven't read this book, probably none of the above are true. This book is written with a hacker's mind. It reveals and elaborates on the most common and not so common volnurabilities of computer and web applications. I am glad I read this book and used the information to plug the holes at a client's web application, so when one of their laptops was later compromised, no harm was done to their data or IT infrastructure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for Securing Microsoft Application Development.
I am happy with this book, it helped me quickly with all possible security options with Microsoft C++ and little bit of .NET framework. The book drills well enough on the Microsoft specific implementation guidelines for authentication, authorization, cryptographic options, database connectivity etc. It helps most part, but the book is weak on security options related to XML Web services particularly technologies related to WS-Security and Passport (Identity federation options).I am not a Microsoft developer so I do understand the security holes with every Microsoft application..(never heard of a Java virus), so I always wondered why the authors did'nt suggest to secure their own applications from redmond. If you are a C# developer, I am sure you will like it...and it certainly worth a buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take your OpenGL skills to the next level
Since its first release in 1992, OpenGL has been rapidly adopted as the graphics API of choice for real-time interactive 3D graphics applications. The OpenGL state machine is easy to understand, but its simplicity and orthogonality enable a multitude of interesting effects that require more room than can be accommodated in the OpenGL "Red Book". The objective of this book is to demonstrate how to generate more satisfying images using OpenGL in general, and how to achieve some sophisticated results in particular. There are three general areas of discussion: basic OpenGL concepts, basic techniques, and advanced techniques.
5-0 out of 5 stars A new review (again)
I posted a review before, but I decided again to change it. Everything I said I will repeat more or less.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless if you intend to write software
I bought this book hoping that it would explain how LDAP works. Basicaly this book tells you how to set up a server and let other tools use it as they see fit.
4-0 out of 5 stars LDAP System Administration review
This book provides a good introduction to implementing OpenLDAP.I found the authors "jumped" tangentially around quite a bit topically, rather than following an idea from start to finish. It was a bit disconcerting following the examples and being interrupted with background material constantly. This may be an editorial problem, as usually backreferences to material are enclosed in callout boxes, while the topical flow continues.3-0 out of 5 stars LDAP Administration for UNIX

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Leashed and Very Useful Installation Guide
The book is poorly named. "Unleashed" suggests to me wild and wonderful things to do with complex features or even tricks and undocumented things. This is definitely a black Labrador on-the-leash kind of book, and it will get an administrator safely across the broad avenue that is an ISA installation. It's a great book in spite of the name.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This is by far the best ISA Server book on the market.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on a rising product!
This is THE book if you are looking to learn ISA 2004. It is structured in an easy-to-understand manner for windows admins who are familiar with Windows but may not have been exposed to ISA Server or are upgrading from ISA 2000. All in all this is the only book on the subject you'll need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A trully admirable accomplishment - must have type of book
Before you spend your time and money on purchasing any books on the subject, buy this one first. Depending on your background and your needs, it may also be the last one you will purchase.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book and covers the 2.6 kernel
This is an excellent book which explains everything related to the TCP/IP Linux implementation in the 2.6 kernel. There are other excellent Linux networking books, but this is the best one in terms of the details for the TCP/IP implementation.
