5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining in it's own right...
The Stealing the Network series of books is in a catagory on it's own. Thrilling, entertaining, and fun to readjust scratches the surface of these books. I'll recommend this book to anybody, from joe sixpack who only uses the internet for games and pr0n to mitnick himself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, readable illustration of computer security concepts
_Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box_ has 10 stories with a first person narrator, who is either an attacker, or in two cases, a defender. While the characterization isn't up to the standards of (good) commercial fiction* in most cases, it makes the technical medicine go down easier and gives a picture of who and why people do this stuff. That picture is useful in making an abstraction feel more like a concrete threat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Rough writing, but interesting
The writing needs some help -- I understand the newer books are edited by an actual writer to smooth out the prose a bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book (as others reviewed) on UMTS RN planning.
This is the best book on UMTS radio network planning. In fact it is a masterpiece. Well detailed contents, good diagrams and easy to understand plain English. Covers some theory on air interface techniques as well. Warmly recommended especially for RN planning tool designers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Best book for 3G(UMTS) radio network interface
I've read more than 5 books about UMTS air-interface. However, most of books concern only about the physical structure. They didn't tell you WHY the structure is made for. In this book, the explanation is clear and the summary table is really useful. Most of all,it tell you WHY they are made for. Only you know the SPIRIT of physical structure, you will realize the BEAUTY of 3G. I recommand this book for someone with beginning knowledge about UMTS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative , Well-presented but ....
This is one of the best books I've seen and read on 3G matters. Not recommended for those people who are not technical enough (or who hates) to go into the details of mathematical formulas. This book starts with presenting the architecture of UMTS networks and goes on to describe each of the components of a UMTS network (from user equipment up to the core network). Written by people who actually work with Nokia (one of the companies in the world who are at the forefront of UMTS development).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to get the most out of CallManager
Want to kn ow how to get the most out of CallManager???
4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for experienced IP Telephony engineers .
Cisco CallManager Best Practices is a very well written book with plenty of useful information. However, please note, this is not an introductory book for Cisco IP Telephony. As its name implies, this book provides "best practices" for installing, running and optimizing an IP Telephony network. Thus, this book should be used by experienced IP Telephony engineers in order to plan new deployment or optimize existing IP Telephony networks.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to get the most out of CallManager
Telephones used to be so simple. You called Ma Bell, explained a few things like number of individual telephones, you waited a while, then the equipment showed up and you started writing a check each month. Data transmission was at best a secondary requirement (maybe not even that high). Not so anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative. If you develop web software it's a must-read
I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Technique after technique that really works
You can't really read a book like this. You read a few pages and prop the book up with a cookbook holder and start typing in the examples. There were a couple I could not duplicate, but almost everything worked as the authors said it would. Great book, or maybe it would be better to say, great tool!
3-0 out of 5 stars Needs a good proofreader
This book is full of useful information couched in terms that even less technical

4-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage, but quite a few errors
The book is an absolute must for those working in information retrieval, and in particular web information retrieval and web mining. These areas are quite hot (again) both for the academics as well as for industry. I personally enjoyed the fact that there is no discussion of semantic web research directions (Jena, OWL etc.) but others might not... The material is quite tightly brought together and very comprehensibly written. However, especially in chapters 4 and 5 there are many pages containing mathematical errors (either in the formulas or in the algorithms described.) For this reason, I rate an otherwise excellent textbook with 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, approachable, informative
The field of relevance algorithms for the web is still relatively new and the author provides a clear, informative introduction to the still-developing field. Many references to real problems are discussed, and the author avoids needless use of equations or symbolic logic when a simple textual explanation is more appropriate. This is the book that the authors of "Modelling the Internet and the Web" should have written. Avoid that book, it is a confusing disaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best general purpose book on the subject I've seen
Probably not a book you're going to put on your coffee table, but if you've got any interest in this subject matter at all this is a book worth having. You can flip it open to just about any page and find something interesting. Most of the descriptions in this book move from general to specific, so you can jump around from chapter to chapter getting an overview, or dig more deeply when you want more detail. The references at the end of each chapter are also very useful.Whether you want a survey of the field or are trying to implement something specific, this book is a valuable resource. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer to computer networks and its design
A comprehensive textbook for undergraduate/graduate students. The book is complete with basic coverage to different types of networks and their working.Treatment to TCP and other Internet protocols well explained with pseudo code for different algorithms.Various extensions to TCP and network security basics well covered. The book does lack some mathematical treatment to the subject which could have improved the content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Academic Studies.But...
I am studying this as part of my course.I have found this book teaches you from the base about Networking. It's really helpful in understanding the underlying technologies.Larry and Bruce have done a wonderful job in covering almost all of the aspects.But... I found only one thing lacking. That is...graphical explanations. This book is more of text with required graphics but in some places it took time to visualize the concept.I have had Behrouz A. Forozan's (I hope I have spelt the name correctly)"TCP/IP: The Complete Protocol Suite" along with this.Particularly I found some of the parts like ATM, Routing and other chapters' in this book textually gives us a thorough understanding and Forozan's book does depict that visually in a better way. Here is the bottomline, have this book as "The" texbook and have some other books like the as I mentioned before.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good general introduction, not an engineering textbook.
Although this book clarifies the concepts of networking quite good, it lacks in-depth mathematical & statistical theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CSS Walkthrough Guide
This book is/has become my guide when something just isn't functioning properly or when I don't want to remember some hack. I quickly found myself learning all sorts of best practices, and tips that resulted in many hours shaved off my development time... all of this resulting from this very book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tips, tricks and hacks
You have to already know and understand CSS. There is a small introduction, but after that, 101 "How do I..?" Perfect book if you are alredy familiar with the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Very objective reference about CSS. The book has a small introduction on CSS's Structure and part immediately for practical examples.

3-0 out of 5 stars For help with EnCase in book form, start here
I decided to read and review three digital forensics books in order to gauge their strengths and weaknesses: "File System Forensic Analysis" (FSFA) by Brian Carrier, "Windows Forensics" (WF) by Chad Steel, and "EnCase Computer Forensics" (ECF) by Steve Bunting and William Wei.All three books contain the word "forensics" in the title, but they are very different. If you want authoritative and deeply technical guidance on understanding file systems, read FSFA.If you want to focus on understanding Windows from an investigator's standpoint, read WA.If you want to know more about EnCase (and are willing to tolerate or ignore information about forensics itself), read ECF.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money even if you don't use EnCase
Problems with the DVD aside, in my opinion, this book is still worth the money. If you aren't ready for the EnCE exam yet, but are planning on taking a non-vendor-specific certification exam, such as the CCE exam, you can make good use of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Steve Bunting is the head of the police computer forensics unit in Delaware and, together with co-author William Wei, a computer crime detective in New Jersey, has written an outstanding book which should find a place on every computer forensic examiner's bookshelf - even the bookshelves of those who rarely, if ever, use EnCase as a forensic tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a central study guide
I bought this book along with the 'Exam Cram 2 Security+.' I found All-in-One to be a great book as a central reference guide. I went though this book taking notes in another notebook - basically taking the meat out of the 600pg book for later studying. I felt that reading it was important as well, since Gregory White provides several examples and good explanations that later provide a solid base for further studying.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. White Gets it Right
I used Dr. White's All-in-One guide as my primary text for the Security+ exam, and I passed on Monday with a score of 868 out of 900 (96.4%)
3-0 out of 5 stars Book 1 of your 1 - 2 punch
I read this book all the way through last month, just for the heck of it (I'll read any security book). Some chapters seemed too lightweight for exam prep, others (such as the chapters on crypto and PKI) were excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magic bullet for quick DNS fixes/receipies
If you need to understand the difference between BIND 9 or Windows AD DNS and BIND 8, this is not the book for you. But if your management decides to tell you about the imporant new product launch on 20 servers in a new domain they just bought and kept under wraps to stun the competition which they need implemented in some novel way that requires a DNS twist, THIS will save you.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 'MUST HAVE' for new DNS Administrators
This book has turned out to be the best investment I've made so far in my 20 year IT career. I've always trusted O'Reilly books for their detailed accuracy. However, for the task at hand, I didn't need a book to explain WHY things work... I needed one to tell me how to GET them to work. This book was perfect! It doesn't replace the DNS and BIND, 4th Edition, but is a great compliment... Actually, I'm finding the 4th Edition a perfect compliment to the Cookbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars A NICE PROBLEM-SOLVING ORIENTATION
"DNS & BIND Cookbook" is a problem-solving text, which Network Administrators will be glad to read. It displayed utmost rationality in its simple and concise way of dealing with most problems, which arise from Domain Name Systems. It also exposed all the factors, which are likely to escalate Berkeley Internet Name Domain problems, before providing their remedies in a clear sequential order.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good and serious book.
I don't agree with the previous reviewer. It is a serious book with wealth of information and it is not a marketing info book. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book at Just the Right Technical Level
I've often thought that computer books tend to leave out the first forty pages or so that tell you the broad picture of just what it is that you are trying to do. This book can almost be viewed as the front end of any number of dedicated networking books that start off just about where this one ends. Those books then go off in great detail about the arcane details that as the author of this book says 'apply mostly to networks at places like NASA and the CIA.'
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!
This is really a cool book.I am not currently in the feild, and its not too in depth to the point where you get bored, but it gives you just enough information to get by, and also how and where to look if you want more info.Great Book, easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference and Guide

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifies the complex and highlights the important
I have many texts on RF Engineering and quite a few on wireless networks. This has become the first port of call for understanding Antennae and propogation in this physically treacherous environment. Many real life designs rely on multi-path propogation to ensure access points and other such devices work. This is not often clear in the documentation however. This book will help you solve this thorny problem in your network and show you how to battle reflections effectively. It has the right amount of mathematics to make some predictions reasonably possible.A far cry from the norm in this rapidly evolving field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wireless without the hype
Dan Dobkin has managed to encompass in this book information that most people would take 15 to 20 years to learn. This book is useful not only for engineers researching wireless networks but also for theengineer/student that needs to understand the fundamentals of all aspects of radio systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for wireless designers!
A must have for any wireless designer. The author's ability to clearly explain fundamental RF concepts makes this a perfect book for any student of radio. His real world examples, also makes this an indispensable tool for the accomplished professional. The pictures and graphs are extremely insightful and clearly illustrate the points that the author is trying to make.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible!!
I thought the book was good - while I was reading it! When I went to use the Measure Up testing software that came with it the test only offered 97 possible questions. This seemed to be a weak attempt at randomization and none of the graphics referenced in the test questions displayed! After two weeks of emailing back and forth with the software publisher tech support I was given an update to the testing software that offered 668 possible questions which only used one graphic. My biggest complaint at that point was that I repeatedly found discrepancies between the information contained in the testing software and the book!Everything from connection speeds to distances was different between the two. Some of the testing software questions were simply terrible!Obviously this leads the student to question EVERYTHING they thought they had "learned" from the book! I also found elementary typographical errors in both the book and the testing software (e.g. throughout where it should be throughput, etc.). A local testing facility said they use the Measure Up testing software, but they dont suggest a student schedule the test until they start scoring in the %90+ range.
2-0 out of 5 stars Mistake-ridden
"Looking inside" above shows you the old version of this book, not the N10-003 version. You might not notice that this book has been updated though. It tells you that there are 72 questions on the test and that you have to score a 664 (?) to pass. In reality (I just took the test yesterday (and passed)), there are 85 questions and you only need a 554 to pass.

2-0 out of 5 stars I should have read the reviews on Amazon
I, too, found this book to be problematic.Arguably, one of the most challenging concepts to understand and demonstrate on the certification exams is subnet planning.
1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes, the first one was me buying this book!
Do NOT buy this - you will end up spending time returning it, or worse, having it sit on your shelf because you don't have time to return it and you just wasted a ton of money on this book!
2-0 out of 5 stars Way too many mistakes!
Tech books often have mistakes. This one is unbelievable. This book feels more like learning via the gauntlet. You learn by double checking everything in this book against other sources.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book.Good vendor
The book is a very comprehensive introduction to VOIP.It is a very good beginning for anyone with either good networking or good telCo. experience. This book would also be useful for a person with a combination of some net & some telco. It is a technical read, but no so much as to be difficult to get through.A person with no true experience may find themselves a little bit out of their element and should be prepared to do some reference work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult book to read and understand
Although this book is but 15 chapters and 336 pages long it took me an incredible amount of time to read through it due to the complexity with which it was written.I've read several Cisco Press books in the same time it took to read this one!Further, I found myself asking the question over and over again, "If this book is about the fundamentals of Voice over IP and is 'A Systematic Approach to Understanding the Basics of Voice over IP', why is it difficult to grasp even the 'basics' as presented by the authors?"As stated in a previous review, the authors have a great understanding of the topics, however, like my Theory of Operating Systems instructor, they do not do well in 'dumbing' down that information to me, a layperson in this field. This book was definitely written by VoIP engineers for VoIP engineers, not for beginners like myself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best suited for Telephony engineers
Strong Points: -The people who wrote it are definitely knowledgeable: They have loads of information about almost every topic they discuss -Chapter organization: the chapters are well organized as far as the order in which to expose a reader to the topics, building up to the next. Weak Points: -In almost every chapter, the author(s) frequently mention or compare the topic being discussed with an actual Cisco product. While many people agree they make good products, including myself, this book should be about the VoIP as a standard (as the title implies), not Cisco's products. -The author(s) explain most topics by throwing tons of (or too much) information at the reader, including exceptions to the rule - all in the same sentence. Some of the key points are not even mentioned or elaborated on, while the author goes to point out small or insignificant details. -While discussing the history of Telephony and VoIP technology, the use of acronyms is unavoidable, but the author(s) overuses them to the extreme. At times, there are synonym acronyms that the author(s) will use randomly and interchangeably in the same chart, diagram or sentence; this is highly confusing. Also, there is no glossary, so you have to waste time flipping back through the pages to look up acronyms they spelled out once. Many acronyms are not even defined - they are just mentioned as casual talk to define other acronyms (so have your internet browser ready). -The author(s) frequently define topics and acronyms sections or chapters after they are first mentioned. This is also very confusing and frustrating. -The book is filled with charts and graphs. Most of them you really have to study to understand because they use many little pictures for which there is no legend, and some you flat our need an electrical engineering degree to understand. ...
