A+ Certification Concepts and Practices (stand-alone)
This is an Instructional Design marvel... The text is oversize, crammed with excellent and superior illustrations of more than 50 diagrams and screenshots per chapter. This is integrated into an electronic study guide. The electronic book is exactly the same material as your print book so you can take it to work or along on a business trip too. The study guide includes questions for review and an adaptive test simulating a certification exam. The electronic test, study guide and images use only 12MB in nicely organized fashion that I find useful going beyond self-learning. I'll replace our Mike Myers book in our training programs with this one. The only shortcoming I can report is that there isn't any video with the course. I used Mike Myers for our vocational training because of his great book that is integrated with a lab manual and video series. This is as good and put together the two are a marvel. This book is used by my current college computer maintance class.Thebook itself is very informal, but the software that is attached cost moneyto activate.Of cource at our college, we have software already on thecomputer, but the company that made this book should not give a free cdwhen you must pay to look at the information on the cd.I gave this bookthree stars because the information in the book is excellent.The book andpractice guide have very good information dealing with passing a+certification, and are good resources when dealing with upgrading, or evenjust building a brand new computer out of parts.I am a computerprogrammer, and most of the programming books along with a+ certificationbooks give a freeware version of the program.So, if you are not up forspending even more money on this book and software, then this is not thebook for you. ... About the latest edition
This is an excellent Manual for those working in the real world as PC techs. I would caution as I dont fell it may be for beginners. I think you should have a solid foundation in PC basics like I/O, Busses, DMA etc before coming to this. Some diagrams are not as descriptive as the could be. I guess I am spoiled with the diagrams in the Micheal Meyers series. However, I feel this is an intermediate book and a great reference for down road.It has been very helpful to me in studying for the exams in certain areas. There are only a few criticisms I have: No voltages on the CPU Reference charts. Also, I had hard time finding a few things like how many devices on Firewire chain and a few others critical things on the list of Objectives. I do believe it is all there but it seems like the author go's into to much time in giving overviews of the various new technologies. Things I feel you should already have a firm grasp of. Dont get me wrong this is huge manual and is packed with useful information. Many applications are covered and the OS coverage is outstanding. All in all its a great Reference.

I found it very helpfulin troubleshooting a some of my friends computers and it had informationthat was not included in many other computer troubleshooting books. Inaddition, I found the book was easy to understand, it imparted a lot of'real-world' experience and had lots of examples. a classic case of lack of objectivity in review
If you read through the reviews, you would think that there is no other better book on the exposition of IDS systems than this one. The fact is that the quality of presentation of material is very poor, and the book reads like a collection of newsgroup replies and a few cut and paste web articles. So why this discussion ? It happens that Stephen Northcutt is an author and evaluator at GIAC and SANS, private organizations trying to hype up their brand name "certifications". It helps to be in the good looks of SANS when it comes to the "certification" and "advertising" arena. The bottom line: read between the lines (there is one proper review in the list before this one) and hope for a more objective approach when it comes to book reviews. Until then, if you do not trust this review, you have to risk it and buy it ! Flamers, you are welcome to go ahead and get into the good books of Northcutt.

Many elements are valid for beginners, but are othewise outdated
A book like this is always aiming at a moving target. I work at a company that focuses on up-to-the-minute IDS and IPS technologies, based substantially on the same code and techniques involved in this book. Unfortunately, having passed the beginner stage, I found this book outdated.
Excellent book at TCP/IP analysis
"Network Intrusion Detection" 3rd Edition, by Northcutt and Novak does an excellent job at teaching the protocols, tools and analysis required to become a network analysis.I have been impressed with other books by Stephen Northcutt and this book also does not disappoint.

Excellent Study & Practise material
I found the CD excellent in coverage and detail and the tests helped me get right to where I needed to read up. I have now passed 5 of the 7 tests using this CD Rom

There are too many errors to trust any of the information.
I want my money back. Don't waste yours. The information can range from simple things like references to transfer rates as "MegaBytes" instead of "MegaBits" to test questions which ask about Netwareto NT connectivity and the answer has "AppleTalk" as the answer.If Jason is this sloppy, I'd hate to have my network designed by him. Thisproduct should embarrass him. The title sould be "MCSE Completely FullOf Mistakes".

good book but missing something
this is a good book, it goes into such detail and explains things so that advanced users dont fall asleep and new users can understand.The one major problem I have with this good, is that the review questions in the book, where are the answers?There are none, not in the back or on the CD, which is a real shame.

Perfect Study Mate
This book was a big help in passing my TCP/IP exam, but I do not recomend it as a single source.My strategy, which has served me well, is to read the book once, take a practice test (eg Transender), figure out whatconcepts you do not get, study those areas of the book, take practice exam,repeat untill you are scoring high on the practice exams.This book workout great for that and it is cheap and a quick read.Perfect.

Good Review Book
Only get this book if you're already experienced in the TCP/IP world.Passed the test with flying colors!I used this book to review beforehand.Wished it had a little more practice questions, but overall good material!

Entirely Too Many Mistakes
This book contained some good information but was filled with too many errors.The errata from the publisher's web site does not cover even half of the errors, and contains errors itself!Even at a clearance price thisbook was a waste of money.

Thanks to this book, I scored 966 on my exam...
This book has lots of errors due to bad publishing. But It did help me to score so high on my 70-67 exam. I made only one mistake. I am still in shock. After some 500 questions I was ready. Most of errors in this bookwere obvious. I corrected most of them for myself of course...

Good Book
This is an excellent reference book to use with your other A+ study guides. For anyone wanting to get the proper materials to study with, this is one of them you should have.

How can they give u such an useless CD .really a waste of time exploring the CD!!!!!!! the lab_procedure is o.k and diagrams is o.k. the presentation is NOT O.K. exactly like an encyclopedia,as one comment putit.final word--what a damn CD!!!!

A good reference book, but not much else.
I used the book to help pass my A+ tests, but there were several shortcomings.First, some of the info was wrong, such as the Cyrix DLC processor including a FPU.Also, the writing style is worse than anencyclopedia.It's simply too dry to keep your attention, but the book isnice to have around as a reference manual.Read more

The book that could have been
First, you should understand that literally half this book is taken up by the text of RFC's that you can already get on the Internet.The rest is taken up by brief introductions to tools such as nmap and Ethereal that are too brief to be really useful.The book shows some examples of iptables but does not explain what is really going on.Skip this one, folks.

The best book I have ever read, including the Bible
Ladies and gentlemen, Way too many errors!
I bought the book a couple of years ago & started reading it.After a few chapters I stopped because I was too disgusted with the large number of errors, which included both typos & obviously incorrect information (e.g. byte claimed to be 16 bits long).I have subsequently bought, read, & recommend both the Simon Roberts book and the Bill Brogden book.Personally, I think the Roberts book is better.

Oh My God!
I just spent two days working through the first five chapters of the book.At first, the typos were amusing, but after a while, they became extremely frustrating and tedious.I must admit, I learned a lot cross-checking the gargage that he was dishing out. I can not believe that New Riders wouldn'tpublish an errata sheet for this book.It's a published rough draft thatwas never was never seen by a technical editor--an absolute embarrassmentfor New Riders and Cary Jardin.I blame New Riders and will avoid theirpublications.Read more

no help at all unless...
If you are using this book as your sole source of information, and are familiar with the product, it would be okay.If you are looking for additional information to supplement your MCSE studies, DON'T LOOK HERE. The book is choppy, and does not go into explanation of any detailwhatsoever.It left me with more questions than answers and I was sorry Ibought it.

This should be listed on the Microsoft site as required reading for anyone preparing for the exam, or just plain using IIS. Contains information lacking in others
I am not usually a Training Guide fan, prefering instead for the Exam Crams. After failing the exam twice, though, I realized that I wasn't getting the information I needed from the smaller book.Read more

It's OK, (I guess)
I used to work at a university.I ordered this book to review as a possible replacement to a hideously outdated book that we were using. practical NT TCP/IP
Heywoods book covers all the practical issues of using TCP/IP in a Windows NT environment. I studied it to pass the MCSE exam and come back to it as a reference. For a more complete study of TCP/IP also read Internetworkingwith TCP/IP Vol I by Douglas Comer.

Great book!
This book covers pretty much every important thing there is in Microsoft TCP/IP. The explanations were very clear and use of drawings and figures were very helpful.
