5-0 out of 5 stars Classic work - but in series need of updates as time goes on
I cannot fathom a guess as to how many times the books in this series have saved my in project work over the years. The only drawback with this series is that some publisher should endeavor to keep them up to date.Serious Unix system programmers must have copies of the complete series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The real power of UNIX is in communication
The real power of UNIX or any application for that matter is in interprocess communication. I found early on that to accomplish any large project would require the cooperation of interprocess communication. Now I find that simple administration skills also require knowledge of this interprocess communication.

4-0 out of 5 stars an up to date book
a good up to date book on linux but author devotes to much time and space and chapters covering servers which the ordinary desktop user wont use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slightly above average resource
This book has quite a bit of good information, but if I see yet another Linux book devote an entire chapter or more to using Mozilla Firefox, I think I'll scream.Yet it continues to happen.Sure, the applications are part of the operating system, but those of us looking for a good OS resource want more meat and less potatoes, so to speak. This book does take you through the steps to setting up most everything that the beginner to intermediate user would want to set up - on their workstation. Most of the content focuses on using the GUI, but at times also gives the command line interface equivalent. If you're looking for a resource to help you find the RHEL/FC equivalent of what you've been doing in another distro, or another UNIX variant, it's not a bad choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book mainly for intermediate level programmer.
The new book of Negus is of superb quality to

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide and Reference
I used 'Als Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure' for my test and scored high. It was a tough test but this guide does a great job of telling you what you need to know. Most importantly it covers the topics in a VERY clear and concise manner. The labs are also very well done and helpful. The separate lab/text is a great format I hope to see for all future exam books.

5-0 out of 5 stars good guide
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I've been using Windows since the early 1990s and recently bought my first Mac. At first I thought this wasn't the book I wanted.I wanted to learn the OS on its own, not in "translation." For example, you'll find things like this in this book: "Finder = Windows Explorer," "Dock = Taskbar," etc. I thought it would hinder learning in a way total-immersion wouldn't; I'd hoped to learn to use the Mac directly. So after my husband picked up "Switching to the Mac" the first day I had the computer--in order to figure out how to network the Mac to our PCs and printers, and to transfer files, etc. (all of which is in this book)--I ordered four other books. I wanted to read them like other reviewers did: straight through, fun learning. But, it's not as easy as I'd hoped to learn a whole new operating system and, for me, the manuals don't prove to be fun reading -- as cheeky as their humor can be. So, I find myself reaching for "Switching to the Mac" as a necessary reference book. It presupposes that the reader is proficient at using a computer, but not a Mac (unlike other books, which either assume no computer knowledge or are written in "Mac language" for those familiar with previous Mac operating systems.)
5-0 out of 5 stars "Switching to the Mac" - Entertaining and Informative
Are you a long time Windows user that is new to the Mac?

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
A good book for who wanna learn about Real Time Operative Systems. Easy to read and full of interesting information

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book, but ...
Actually I think that it's a great book only if you have a strong background about how a kernel or RTOS works. I've spent a lot of time reading a theoretical books that teach you what a kernel is about, so for me the reading was easy. The fact that the book includes the source code makes it awesome, 'cause you can see inside a truly real kernel, and eventually write your own (what is I want to do). But if you are an unexperienced user of kernels, or just want to learn something about it, you should start somewhere else. The one a recomend you is that of Andy Tanenbaum, the creator of MINIX (minix is a tiny unix running in an intel 8086 cpu), and this other one that I bought here: Real-Time Concepts for Embedded Systems by Qing Li, Caroline Yao. After you deeply understand what a pipe o scheduler is, among other things, then you should start thinking about coding, because the book has some lack of theory. Anyway I strongly recomend it for experienced users. Have a nice coding =)

3-0 out of 5 stars Writing style is often confusing
I have a general background in computer science and am trying to learn about embedded systems from this book.My main objection is that the writing needs to be edited to improve clarity. For example on page 61, the author states "Generally, the first message inserted in the queue is the first message extracted from the queue (FIFO).In addition, to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, uC/OS-II allows a task to get messages Last-In-First-Out (LIFO)."The second sentence is ambiguous.Does it mean "In addition to the ability to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, ..." or "In addition, in order to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, ..."?On the next page the author states "Interrupts allow a microprocessor to process events when they occur, which prevents the microprocessor from continuously polling (looking at) an event to see if it has occurred."In this sentence, "prevents the microprocessor from" should be changed to "removes the need for the microprocessor to be".The average reader already knows enough about LIFOs, FIFOs, and interrupts to interpret these sentences correctly, but in many other cases the lack of clarity is a serious impediment to understanding. The book also contains various errors. For example, the path name of a .xls file, given on pages 370 and 403, is incorrect. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a real good one, if you are new to unix shell scripting then this is the book you would want to start with. In detail explanation about everything. Good one, I had a confusion which one to start classic shell or this book, after buying this book I felt I made a good decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only one word -- Excellcent!!
I brought a lot of books through Amazon.com. But nothing ever pushed me to say something here except this one. I really like its examples which give you a concrete knowledge of what is what. For example, I have tried many times to teach me the Regular Expression and everytime I knew what those syntaxs are. But when it came to the real use, I could barely come up with only a little stuffs. But this time, my experience is totally different.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Absolutely great book for anyone interested in shell scripting! From the very beginning, this book explains how to write good, solid scripts with tools like flow control constructs, which are very well taught. Chapters about sed & awk are great!! Trust me, you will finally understand these ;)

3-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information, but hit and miss.
The book covers a ton of information and is usually excellent for reference. However, every now and then there is a subject that is thin. Backups is a good example. Such an important part of the system and there are only a few pages on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for a Unix guy like me
For a Unix guy like me, command line tools (and scripting) is essential. This book is truly fantastic for that. It has stuff that I could not find even with google. Very well organized and well-presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE!
Stanek's Command-line Pocket Consultant is hands-down the best on the subject. It's clear, concise and packed with useful details. It covers just about everything I've ever wanted to do from the command-line, and has extremely detailed information on some areas (such as printers, performancing monitoring, and advance hard disk config) covered nowhere else. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice compact reference to the Windows command-line.
If you use the Windows command-line then this book should be very usefull. The most usefull section is the batch script reference. It can be a real time saver when you writing a batch script and you cant remember how to do something. This book also contains the most usefull commands you will use when you are maintaning computers and servers. One thing I dont like about this book is that it containsinformation about using the command-line for Windows Server 2003, I think this should be left out and put in a seperate pocket consultant. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars securing your system
Kuo and Beland help the sysadmin who might be new to SUSE Linux. Conceptually, you can think of the book as two interwoved parts. The first part is explaining generic linux, or even unix, operations. Applicable to a Red Hat or Solaris machine, perhaps.

Difficult Side
2-0 out of 5 stars not a good starting point
This is not a good book to start with. The book by Gray and Meyer and Hurst and Lewis is anyday much much better than this book. This book does not care to explain the meaning of small-signal operation and analysis and even such basic important aspects such as biasing and more subtler aspects in later chaters in feedback theory etc etc. It is not at all a good starting point. 5-0 out of 5 stars REALLY HELPFUL!
I was used to an InDesign software from far ago, the dinosaur era. When got the newest version, was at a complete lost. This book explains in easy words EVERYTHING! Adobe's software is great, but their manuals can be used and understood by those with an IQ of 300 up. Am grateful for this book and fully recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars quite boring
Technically, this will teach you how to use indesign. But it's so boring and repetitive. It's like memorizing a list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be
I've used Visual Quickstart books for years, and until this one they've been extremely accurate. This one contains what seem to be screen caps of menus and options from some previous version of InDesign, so you have to look around for the options someplace else if they've moved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and understandable - really learn MFC
I purchased this book a number of years ago when I started a new job which required me to program using MFC.I had never done any programming for Win32, let alone using MFC (which wraps around the Win32 API).Coming from this state of ignorance, it only took a short time of working with Prosise's book for me to gain enough confidence to start writing MFC programs on my own.
4-0 out of 5 stars Truly beautiful work BUT........
no practical programs. Both "Windows programming" of my boss,Charles Petzold and the book taking draw, game programs to demonstrate.
5-0 out of 5 stars who says it takes longer?
I managed to muddle my way through simple dialog-box based applications with hardly any documentation -- just advice from colleagues. When I got assigned to write a real live multi-threaded, multi-document app, I tried the books lying around the office which had helped me considerably with the simpler apps, but which left me much confused about things like device contexts. Why all of a sudden CClientDC instead of CPaintDC? And what is a DC anyway exactly? They say, "See, if you do this and this, then you can draw an ellipse that wiggles around." So I do that, and then try changing parameters, and am left only able to draw that ellipse. I can't make it purple.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has changed my life
This is a must-read for any Perl programmer. You are only as good as the teachers you have, and if your teachers use stuff like $|++, you are screwed. In this case, Conway would tell you to Use English;, and then you'd know what a $| is.A sampling of other tips:
5-0 out of 5 stars Books is getting worn out
I came to Perl from C. Some of the good things I learnt in C (using K&R coding style), and some of the bad things, were both dealt with in this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Coding Methods to Improve Your Perl
I have to admit that I can bristle at books that try to preach, so Perl Best Practices was on a hiding to nothing when I came to review it. I also have to admit to being torn about the author -- after all, he is one of those poor fools who insist on living in cold, unenlightened Melbourne, while I live in vastly superior Sydney. On the other hand, how can I dislike a man who manages to place a quote that involves my favourite character, Lady Bracknell. from my favourite comic play, 'The Importance of Being Earnest,' in the first few pages of his book?

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference on Linux subsystems, not a book for starters
This book is not for Linux (kernel) newbies but for those who already know their way around the kernel and seek detailed info on certain parts of it. This book has some good overviews on different subsystems of the Linux kernel. Some sections, like USB, have been expanded since the second edition of this book. I would have liked to see a section on the new 2.6 scheduler.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for a normal coder looking to learn Unix drivers.
If you are trying to learn how to write Linux Device drivers from scratch, this is probably not the book for you. I believe I am somewhat C/C++ savvy, and I expect sample code that is less than 10 lines of code to compile correctly.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even read the free online version
This book was so badly written that I just couldn't help writing my first review on Amazon. I NEVER bothered writting reviews.
