1-0 out of 5 stars too many junks in the book
I have to say it's a book full of junks and gaudy texts. The author wants to cover all the topics in this field but he ignores the readability as a scientific reader. Most of the time you may find all the texts are lack of focus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage on Distributed Systems
I just completed this book for a graduate course on Distributed Systems and was amazed at the volume of coverage on so many topics ranging from CORBA, RPCs, Fault Tolerance and Security to list just a few.Tanenbaum is reknown as being the best writer in Computer Science and this is an excellent book to read and use as a reference. My only complaint is that it is starting to show signs of being dated and this is why I gave it only 4 instead of 5 stars. Hopefully, in a new edition there will be coverage on the super network GRID and more enhanced and extensive coverage of Intelligent Agents.

2-0 out of 5 stars cyber kid
My Operating Systems course used this book and we were assigned chapters that did not coincide. Lack of editing, and no source code for process and child process creation, nor thread or how a thread can spawn another thread. This book is incredibly disappointing. This book does not read well at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid, but not Stallings' best book.
I've just finished using this book for a course and I wanted to write a review while the information was still fresh in my mind. However because mine looks to be the only positive review I will probably fall into the trap of rebutting some of the other reviews.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reality check time...
I always end up writing these reviews with some trepidation... Am I out to convince people to buy stuff or not to buy stuff?

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than a $1500 Apple Class!
Peachpit just got the rights to start publishing Apple Certified materials. You used to have to take a $1500 class from Apple to get this same information!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for preparing for the ACHDS test !
I think this a must have book for anyone wanting to learn how to learn more about Mac's and how to support them. It's easy reading and you gain a lot of knowledge on how to use the operating system.

1-0 out of 5 stars Try getting useful information out of this thing
Organization? Perhaps in a Faulkner stream-of-consciousness sense. "Applications" is _chapter 14_. The topic emphasis has little to do w/ the needs of most developers. You get two entire chapters on "Design Time Integration", whereas you get a small (two page) subsection on "Keyboard Handling" and likewise "Scrolling". Gee, how about if I want to handle the _arrow keys_!? Maybe you could explain scrolling in more than a paragraph of English text? How about an example? To top it off, it's in a narrative & chummy style. Yuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Things You Need to Know to Write a Great Windows Forms Application
The basics of Windows forms programming are fairly obvious. You drag controls from the toolbox onto the design surface, set the properties as necessary, and wire code to the events. For simple apps this is all you need to know and you typically don't need to bother with the documentation.
2-0 out of 5 stars Try MSDN Instead...
What a disappointment. I went in to this book knowing almost nothing about Windows Forms. After reading it, I think I know less now than when I started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Would recommend this book
I love the format Steve Bass uses while writing
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical,Funny,To the Point.
After slogging through books on W2KPro/XPPro that are painful to read and no help unless your running 100+ PC's this book was a welcome relief in it's smarts, humor, and direct approach to fixing many of the challenges presented by the above mentioned OS's. Having one of my usual sleepless nights I started tallying up all the money I spent trying to keep MS software running, protected from hackers, bots, spyware, virii worms and it's own predisposition to fail and I realize that with an entire industry built around sloppy software as the norm and a gov't asleep at the antitrust wheel we're not likely to see a real improvement any time soon. When you hear words like regulation stifles innovation reach down and make sure you still have your wallet because it's about to be plundered. It's always about the money. If I had to spend another $25 to have this book included in the box that MS/OS came in then I would've saved hundreds on books that did'nt meet my needs and priceless amounts of lost time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better off researching the Internet for free
This book makes a lot of assumptions.Such as, you'll be using ZAP channels. If you are using SIP and/or IAX only, you'll quickly find yourself lost trying to follow the examples since a critical part of the setup is done in zapata.conf (i.e. a useless file for SIP/IAX only deployments). If you aren't using ZAP and you skip that part of the chapter (like I did), you'll pull out hair you didn't know you had trying to get the example configs to work.Likewise, the example builds out even further in the next chapter about extensions.conf, riddled with more ZAP configuration with a smattering of SIP examples. And if you are looking for IAX config examples you can forget it.Indeed it seems that SIP and IAX were after thoughts in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The title of the book is slightly understated
I bought this book because I thought that having a small PBX-type system for my home/office would allow me to route faxes to my fax machine, provide voicemail to replace the limited answering machine, and auto attendant menus to route calls to 1 of 3 extensions that I would be able to configure. I saw a solution that would divide business and personal calls and also filter and perhaps stop once and for all those evil telemarketing calls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Asterisk
Asterisk IS the future of telephony. I have been wanting to dive into the Asterisk world for over a year now, but never had the time until now. I have very limited telephony experience, and what little I know is from working on an old AT&T definity system, in a fairly passive role i.e. watching someone else do all the really cool stuff. Unfortunately, peons like myself weren't allowed to muck around on the PBX's. Lucky for me, Asterisk doesn't care who you are, you are encouraged to muck, and this book is an excellent place to begin.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok--rather above average
On the whole, the book is very good in that in general it consists of short self-contained programs: the input, the code, and the output, with discussion. Unfortunately, later in the book the authors got tired of the above and in many cases do not provide the output.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the Person Who Has Everything
Not exactly one of those people but still hanging in there. This is a very good do-it-yourself book on SAS coding. But remember, it is still "do-it-yourself" so beware. You can get the job done, but it may not always be the most economical or efficient way. Otherwise this is an invaluable book. Keep it handy.

4-0 out of 5 stars My first SAS book
This book is helpful for beginner users. It was invaluable to me in learning SAS programming, with great examples of all the basic concepts and operations. It's concise and pretty well-written. (By the way, there's also a helpful "SAS Workbook" that goes along with this, written also by Cody. The Workbook has many exercises to help you get started with SAS). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi level book.
The book is keystone for those involved in FEA. It covers all the aspects of Finite Element formulation of physical problems, thought in a more coincise way with respect to , say, Zienkiewicz work and in a less prosaic way. As with many other FE books, the level of mathematics involved in the book is quite high, especially if one considers the non linear finite element formulation for continuum mechanics. Even though the book is mainly intended for structural engineers, it covers fluid dynamics and heat transfer topics. The section I mostly used was the one regarding solution methods for FEM problems: here, Dr Bathe makes a really nice job (about 150 pages). There's a code at the end of the book, it's a FORTRAN 77 one, but one can translate it into a more modern language (I guess we all should get the rid of FORTRAN 77....).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent finite element text
This is an excellent text for students and practioners alike. The presentation is brief and to the point and focuses only on algorithms and techniques that have been proven to work. The problems are excellent and can only be solved if one understands the essence of the techniques presented. There are many textbooks on finite elements but none so thought provoking as this one. Definitely a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most valuable book

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for beginers and students
This book is really good for someone who wants to start of with shake, gives you nice intro and then takes you all the way up, this book is not only full of tutorials but it also talks about the technical side, the humor makes me feel as if I am talking to the author. Its a good buy at the price and also there is no other material available on shake, I would like to see a part 2 of this book which is for film crew (compositors) who work with real difficult challenges cause each shot is different from the other. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful info and perspective of running Oracle's database on Linux
This is a well written book for anyone who wants to learn lots of useful Linux specific details and perspective about set up, administration, monitoring, and tuning Oracle 10g on Linux.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied with the contents
If you read the editorial review: It is stated that the book is about installing and configuring Oracle Database 10g on Linux. Yes, the author did explain clearly the process of installing and configuring the Oracle 10g on Linux. He also covered a few more topics such as HA (High Availability), Tuning SQL, RAC, Replication, Index and Partitioning ... but not in depth. But the coverage is acceptable and useful. Do buy this book and you will find it useful if you love Oracle DBMS running on LINUX platform.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to Oracle 10g for Linux
As an experienced Oracle DBA, I wanted a nice text that covers Linux specifics to Oracle 10g. This book is okay not perfect but the only real Oracle 10g for Linux book on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Student
This book was excellent. It thoroughly covered all proponents in what is to be found in FCP 5. There is a whole chapter on multi-cam editing which is a new feature on FCP. The DVD-ROM makes it easy for a reader to do the same excersies talked about in the book. However, this is an advanced editing book so if you are unfamiliar with the basics of FCP then you might want to start on an intermidiate lesson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch your options!
It is good book, decent reference but if you like I'm just starting out get "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD course. Yes it is pricey but you're getting precisely what you have been paying for. I found this book to be great but in the same time I found the DVD course to be unmatched. The ability to sit down and listen and watch and follow is can not be substituted with a book. If you are more on economy side, I found that there's no economy as I'm now of the subjects that with book like that, or with any other book it would take me forever to come up.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' reference!
Arnold Robbins' UNIX IN A NUTSHELL, 4TH EDITION defines what UNIX means in a changing world where there is no standard-bearer, covering common parts of the leading Unix-like operating systems, how to understand and locate commands which work across versions, and how to use tools which have become a 'part' of Unix even though they don't ship with the operating system, from CVs and GNU Make to GDB, curl and wget. UNIX operating system users simply must have this reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars DE FACTO UNIX

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks depth
I bought the book because the table of contents showed that the book covered the topics comprehensively. However, there is a serious lack of depth. I think the book is good for students who are just learning about linux and embedded systems, but not as useful for the more serious and experienced developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful
I take this opportunity to congratulate authors on the job WELL DONE. This book emphasizes on "programming" aspect of embedded Linux which is missing from earlier books like one from karim yaghmour. The topics such as MTD, real time, embedded graphics, uclinux are presented very clearly and in detailed manner. Overall, it's GOOD. ... Read more

This book is well written and laid out.Whether or not you are a beginner or advanced user coming to vi, this is a valuable tool for getting the most out of vi.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE VI reference
This book is the reference for those wanting to understand the mysteries of Vi. Almost all Unix based systems typically have a variant of the Vi editor installed, even when the system is in a limited use state, therefore an understanding of this no-nonsense editor is crucial if you want to administer or recover your system. This makes the Vi the editor to know, and this book guides you through the basics to more advanced "tricks" used by the guru's. Even if you only plan on casually using Vi, you can't lose having this book in your library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book
With only a few months of OO programming about 6 years ago, I needed a book to take me from the beginning again. This book delivered. I found I have needed to read some chapters several times to 'get it', particularly chapters 7 & 8. I like the way he writes an example and then steps you through it, breaking down the code into sections. It was easy to read and easy to refer back to. I still have a couple of chapters to review and I'll be looking for more of his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you a programmer or novice programmer with little or no object-oriented programming experience? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Jesse Liberty and Brian MacDonald, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a primer on the C# 2005 language specifically, and object-oriented software development in general.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a beginner book! for novices!!
I am sorry but this book is not a novice or begiiner book on C#.

1-0 out of 5 stars shipping problems
Haven't got it yet. paid over 20$ for next day delivery as was offered, and when I checked the order it said estimated delivery date was 6 days later. Called cstmr srvc and Amanda argued with me about how I was wrong about the delivery date that was offerd. When I asked about the charge she just ignored me and kept talking about how I was wrong and the item wasnt available for next day delivery. So I asked for a supervisor and instead of her saying ok, tried to argue with me some more. I had to yell at her to get a super on the phone. Anyways the super tried to tell me the same thing, but after actually looking at my order he then changed his story and assured me it would arrive on time or the shipping charges would be dropped guess we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for your great cstmr srvc AMAZON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent preparation
I purchased this book for study purposes after taking a class that was supposed to completely prepare you to pass the 70-290 exam.Thinking that this would be mostly review, I tore into the material last week when I got it and found that it is way more in depth than my class was.Excellent depth and the writing style is easy to follow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Little Relevant Info from a programmer's perspective
If you buy a server with Windows 2003 Server R2 pre-installed, there is very little you need to do in order to get it up and running as a web/apps server. As such, the book, while very clear, has joined my legions of forgottable IT books. It's not bad, it's just not filled with enough info to make it a must have.I supposed it allowed me to feel better that I wasn't alone in my configuration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Server Crash Course
A good way to quickly catch up on Server management. About the only thing missing is Active Directory. Instead of just saying that its too big of a topic to cover, it would be nice to have at least a brief guideline to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Manual
This is a great introduction manual if you have never installed or used Windows Server 2003.I found it very easy to understand and it walked me through each step that would be of concern for a typical user. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a WONDERFUL book.
It is the book. It is one. It is one of the best book on shell scripting ever saw. It requires some UNIX background and if you need one, take "UNIX Essentials" DVD. It is a complete course for a beginner but for a scripting skills it is second to none book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book...
This is one of the best books on Unix shell scripting I have ever read. I immediately put a few of the scripts to work in our Solaris production environment. Be warned though; this book focuses entirely on the Korn shell. If you plan to write scripts using the Bourne, BASH, or C-shell you should find another book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all levels of *nix users.
The breadth of real-world examples make the difference between this book and most reference texts. It's true that it's written for korn, but I've had little trouble adapting for Bash; many of the scripts run almost unchanged and the ones that don't provide a useful opportunity for exercise in adaptation. The authors prose is clear. His attitude is a bit challenging; he says early on that that his intention is to teach you how to -solve problems- by shell scripting, NOT to present a ream of canned solutions. This is NOT a reference text for any particular shell, you'll still need plenty of O'Reilly books, a web browser & etc.
