2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date now
Python has come a long way. This book does not instruct you on any of the newest features or capabilities.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I am new to Python and really, really like this book. I have read it cover to cover twice. It is obviously biased in favour of Python, but goes out of its way to explain the "gotchas" and things that are not intuitive. All in all, a WAY above average computer book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not a reference book
This book isn't horrible, but it meanders all over the place. It often confuses the issue by using several concepts in one example. There are too many instances where a technique is shown but then explained several chapters later. Sometimes this is necessary in language books, but this book abuses the idea.

4-0 out of 5 stars Expensive series but surely valuable
My one and only complaint is the cost of these version specific books. The next OS X will be out in just a few months, but here we are with a 10.4 specific book. And of course this book by itself doesn't do much: you need others in the same series to have a good overall picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start to Learn OS X Programming
This book is a great start to learn the best OS X programming technology. As a professional developer. The title says it "Learning Cocoa with Objective C".Avoid the book "Cocoa in a Nutshell" until you know Cocoa and Objective C and want a good refeerence.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK...
While this book is very detailed and has a lot of information in it about Cocoa programming, it starts off too quickly. You might be discouraged by the assumptions the author makes about how much C (and programming in general) you know. If you are experienced in computer programming, then you will find this book to be a blast and will learn objective -C in no time at all. However, if you aren't too good with programming, start off with some online tutorials or other books, as you will get lost after reading the first two chapters or so.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but not the best book
A very popular book, and greatly improved in its second edition.Very example and tutorial oriented; somewhat out of date at this point, however. Helps the user learn Interface Builder, ProjectBuilder and Objective-C, too.Possibly a bit shallow to get the reader writing their own Cocoa programs from scratch, but a good introduction.Ultimately, probably not as recommended for a first purchase as Cocoa Programming by Scott Anguish or Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X by Aaron Hillegass. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very nice general OS X UNIX book, good way to get involved...
I like easy to read book and I also had assumed that learning UNIX is not necessarily has to a struggle. This book stood up to my expectations almost perfectly. It does not overwhelm with technical details and does not press too much. I also followed someone's review advice and purchased "UNIX Essentials" DVD that is complete OS X UNIX course recorded. These two nicely complement one another. You watch it and you read it. If you didn't catch it from the first try you watch it again and read it again. In two months I found myself confident to that extend that gave advises to our system administrator and he accepted them because there were subjects that he wasn't completely sure. I can't overstate how much I have learned from them. Don't be naive, though. You will have to learn and memorize many things. The fact of owning neither book nor DVD will not make you knowledgeable, but if you will work it trough, trust me, you will surprise many people around!

2-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book if you are a
This book is a disjointed collection of largely irrelevant information. Here are some examples that reflect the general spirit of the book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for basic understanding of OS X' Unix background

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a power user book
I purchased this book sight unseen since it was referenced as a "Power-User" book. I've used Macs for the last ten years and consider myself savy but no tech-geek or mac expert. Yet almost everythingin this book i already knew, both in terms of mac use in general and 8.5specifically. To be fair, I did find a handful of useful tips or insightinto several areas i was less familiar with, but this accounts for maybe 5%of the book. On the other hand, if you are new to Mac and/or 8.5 this bookis excellent and I would give it a 5 star rating. For power users, it getsone star for the few tidbits it offers mac savy users. The included CD,like all book CDs, strikes me as pointless since its almost always out ofdate by publication time. For its steep $50 list price, the book offerspower users little value for their money.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for MacOS 8.5 users
At first glance, I thought that this was just another of those too little too late books that seem to be all too common. Not so, this has to be the first book I have ever had on the Mac Os, that is worth the purchase price. It covers all aspects of Apple's MacOS 8.5 and is a goldmine ofinformation. The book is also loaded with information on many usefulshareware and commercial applications that enhance the Apple systemsoftware and demonstrates many useful solutions that will greatly enhanceyour Mac operationsThe section on Applescript is excellent for people whoare using or learning to use Applescript, or for those who just want tounderstand scripting in general. This book also describes connecting Macsto various PC operating systems including NT and Window 95 this sectionalone is worth the price of the book. Having used Macs and Pc's for manyyears I was pleasantly surprised by this excellent resource. A must havefor anyone using MacOS 8.5. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
good stuff.could have been more advanced.questionable organization (much like windows itself.)still, the tips and tricks picked up more than paid for the volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for anyone living with/supporting/rolling out Windows XP
Windows XP is a fact of life for most of us.The sad fact of the matter is that Windows is bloated and sick - loaded with performance/security/stability robbing settings and "extras".Karp's excellent volume - simple enough for the layman but deeply valuable even for the experienced lays out how to pare down XP to fighting form. You can't change XP's basic nature - but you can improve matters significantly.Windows XP Annoyances for Geeks is well organized (like all O'Reilly books) and full of practical, real-world tips.If you must support or roll out XP in a corporate environment, then this book becomes essential to your survival (or at least your sanity). Is it the last word?Probably not - but you will not actually read or use much more than you get here.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gives you a less annoying XP
Isn't that a neat picture on the cover? Certainly grabs one's attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Windows XP from a Macintosh User
I have a confession to make... I go both ways. That's right, I'm bi-directional. I bat for both teams. I use Windows just as much as I use a Mac. The dirty little secret is that I'm not that unusual; there are a lot of Mac users that have to work with Windows (my involvement is voluntary, which might be an oddity.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Great XP quick reference
Windows XP in a Nutshell is a great, handy little reference on XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great but not if you upgraded from book 1 to book 2
The original book, which dealt with Keynote 1, was very helpful. I hoped this one would add or expand, since the author had a chance to improve on the original just as Apple had when they went up a version. No luck. I wasted my money. However, if you're buying this one and don't have a previous edition it should be great. Don't forget that Apple's Keynote version 3 is now out so you can expect another book soon, maybe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program!!
I am involved in doing around 100 Keynote Presentations a year! I am certified through Microsoft for PowerPoint. I find Keynote far superior to PowerPoint. Tom has done a magnificant job writing this book! If you are looking for a simple no nonesense book to learn Keynote look no further. I have used a lot of computer learning books this is the best!I recommend this one to everyone. The chapter creating custom themes is worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a great book, just like the title says "QuickStart Guide" and it is definitely a quick start guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's quick, fast, and complete.
The Visual Quickstart Guides have a format where each page is divided into two columns with one column showing what you see on the screen and the other column having text that explains what's going on and what you need to do. A few such pages are then used to cover a small topic within the chapters. The small topic is self contained, easy to identify and makes a nice little mini-less all by itself. A good index leads you to this mini-lesson if you are looking for just that one thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad somebody wrote it!
As a video producer in a small band, I bought this book for one and one reason only: To learn how to use A.Pack. There is no info anywhere on the web that tell you how A.Pack works, but I heard on Apple's DVD list that this book was a good resource for making AC3 files. It is, and it's even better than I imagined.3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks some vital information
In his book ver 1.5 Martin covers scripts and play all buttons. However in ver 2.0 he does not cover scripts in the book but has you go to web for that information.Plus he does not cover scripts with enough information to feel you understand it.3-0 out of 5 stars In a slim field, this is pretty much all there is.
This book was definitely helpful to me; but it didn't expand a whole lot further than the 500+ page manual included with the software. Some additional helpful information on creating appropriate graphics, but I didn't learn a whole lot. I'm waiting for a really good DSP 2.0 book to come out. But until that happens, this is really the best you can do. ... Read more

Editorial Review

IBM's DB2 Universal Database has a large following of corporate users--which means information technology professionals eager to sell their services to such companies--who can profit by knowing how to set up and use DB2. 3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Hit the High Notes
This book does have a solid base, and easily covers all of the requirements for the DB2 Fundamentals exam. However, it begins to come up short for the DB2 Administrator test. Many areas are not particularly well explained, and the description of the DB2 product family is a complete hash job, and really leaves you none the wiser.3-0 out of 5 stars Don't rely on this to master the material
I used this book to prepare for the 512 and 513 exam as well as a prerequisite to attending the CF231 DB2 Database Administration Workshop. The book worked well to get a slight head start on the class. However, it does not prepare you to do well for the 512 exam (took and passed yesterday, but am not pleased w/ the score). The sample questions were woefully inadequate. There were a ton of questions that were not addressed at all in the material and you really need a much better understanding of SQL than the book provides. I'm taking the 513 exam next Monday, and am planning to study other material before then.

2-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Poor
Given the authors' qualifications, you would expect a much better book. The organization is frankly dreadful, the exposition confusing, and the samples inconsistent with the software provided. It seems to morph without warning from a manual to a marketing pamphlet:it is exasperating to be looking for a solid technical description and to find instead a vague sales pitch. The information is there, mostly, but it is not easy to dig it out of the swirling chaos of this book.
