4-0 out of 5 stars Another terrific book on Lean/Agile
This book is a great follow-on to the Poppendieck's "Lean Software Development" book. That book gave readers "an Agile Toolkit" for understanding what lean and agile are all about. This book is similar to its predecessor both in tone and content with practical examples of what works and what doesn't.Much of the book is still framed by lessons learned from Toyota's manufacturing system and Mary Poppendieck's experience at 3M.
4-0 out of 5 stars where is XP?
The authors describe well what is meant by lean software development. An "agile" approach that involves planning and delivering software in small, frequent steps. As opposed to the traditional big delivery waterfall format.
5-0 out of 5 stars Relating software development to manufacturing...
I don't think I've ever tried to fit software development into the model of lean manufacturing techniques. But surprisingly, it has a number of parallels, and they are outlined well in the book Implementing Lean Software Development - From Concept to Cash by Mary and Tom Poppendieck.

1-0 out of 5 stars Errors and omissions
The discussion on how to use the new SqlCacheDependency class is wrong. The book claimed (in page 623) that "with SQL Server 2005 no setup work is needed and no external objects must be added to the Database.". In reality, you need to setup several permissions in the database side. In addition, you have to make sure that the compatibility level of your database is set to 90.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover
This book is an excellent introduction to the facilitites available in ASP.NET 2.0. It covers simple topics such as HTML controls, WebControls, page lifecycle etc, and also goes a little deeper to discuss details of providers, personalisation & master pages to name but a few. There are also several chapters devoted to displaying data using ADO.Net which are useful. There's also a good chapter on ASP.NET security. Most if not all of this information is available on the web, however having a single book that covers these topics is well worthwhile - it's a great book to have by your side when you are writing ASP.NET sites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad and deep coverage
The two books of this series (Core Reference & Advanced Topics) offer broad and deep coverage of ASP.NET.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you just want your printouts to look right
If you are looking for a practical, concise book explaining how to get the best possible match between what you seen on screen and what gets printed, this is NOT the book. It spends loads of time discussing background theory and how to create color profiles. Most people just don't need or want to get into this much detail or to control the process to this extent. If you just want to use color management tools and existing color profiles--which is at least 80% of us--this book is too long winded and not nearly practical enough. If you are in the elite 20%, this is a great book (see the glowing reviews for details).

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This is a great book that teaches about color theory and digital workflow. At the same time, it is not just theoretical. If you work with color images, you'll find this book very useful in a practical down-to-earth fashion. The authors eat, drink, and breath color management: they know what they are talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best introductory book to GIS
I am taking a class on GIS applications in public health and this book has been extremely helpful. It is simple, easy to follow, and the step-by-step exercises are the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for begineers
I was starting with Arc products and this book was a very good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource and teaching manual
I purchased this book to be able to create my own maps for a client.I was familiar with ArcGIS Desktop 8.3, but had never really created any GIS data.Using this book, I was able to create custom shape files, MXDs and layer files that really impressed the client. The author assumes little or no previous knowledge of using the product and does an outstanding job putting the information in the simplest of terms.Unlike the books that come with the software, this one will actually have you creating GIS data in no time flat.Well worth the money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teachers new to this technology!
Will's book is a great resource for teachers who are interested in introducing blogs etc. into the classroom but who may be intimidated by the technology. His book is easy to read and understand for those of us who are not as technologically advanced as of yet. I believe Will's book will be one of the greatest resources in my classroom in September. I would recommend this book to any teacher who does not want to be left behind by his/her students as technology advances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step by Step Book for Beginners
Will Richardson displays great pedagogical style in walking the reader through the steps of seemingly complicated technological tasks. He makes learning about great tech tools for the classroom like blogs, wikis, and rss easy and exciting. He not only tells how to set them up but various ways to use them in the classroom.I had been searching for such a text and now that I've found it, I plan to use it as the main text for my grad student course about educational uses of the Internet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the buy.
I found it a very useful book, especially with all the downloadable forms. I felt it was a little light on user testing - but otherwise, very good. It felt a bit repetitive and that things were presented in an odd order sometimes, but it's still worth the buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thinking about creating a website and want to do it right?
BUY THIS BOOK!I wish I had this book a few months ago.It could have spared me from many of the nightmares I had while developing a college website. It includes a link to the author's website where you can find lots of forms that ask the right questions so that you can create the right solution.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book takes a SWAG at a process that could work for web redesign
I use this resource as the textbook for the "Web Site Design" course I teach at PSU.My favorite thing about this book is that it supports my course approach that "everyone has a site" and "when you get a job as a web site (designer, producer, developer)OR have the responsibility of having a site dumped in your lap.... you will not be building it from scratch."

5-0 out of 5 stars Neatly written guide for Sql Developers
O'Reilly's SQL Cookbook is the reference I've seen forSQL developers and personally suggest all developers intrested in SQL to must read it. Modeled after a true cookbook, it offers many short snippets of SQL code designed to solve specific problems. You can pick and choose the components you need to help complete your SQL project. Each item in the cookbook is clearly explained in a well defined format. High recommendation for Sql Dev's. A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for understanding Cryptography.
This book has really shed a lot of light on cryptography for me. I honestly can't put it down--I wish I had paid more attention in my statistics classes so I could be able to apply some of the stuff the author talks about better. I am about half way through the book, and I haven't gotten to the point where it's more of a chore than a pleasure to read it (something I can't about my other technical books).
5-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to drink from the firehose
This book is really incredible. When it was first published in the mid-90's, there was almost no material available on the subject of cryptography. Now, ten years later, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of books riding on Schneier's coattails - but almost none have anything new or useful to say.Impeccably researched (with 1,653 references!) and unarguably complete, Schneier's expertise in theoretical mathematics, experience as a practitioner, and razor-sharp lucidity combine to make this the only book you'll ever need on the subject of cryptography.

1-0 out of 5 stars not a good book, not at all
I would like to give it a zero star if it were there. I read it through but it totally disappointed me. it left so much out, totally uncovered, such as terminal server, which is listed as examinable part. Even the 70-270 book from microsoft press is a total rubbish. The parts covered are not deep enough to help you understand for the exam. For those who work on MSCE, I highly recommend sybex books in stead of Microsoft RUBBISH. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
This was my college text for an intro level class within my information systems major at the University of Texas at Tyler. While I was first a bit worried over the sheer size of the book I soon came to love it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as some may suggest...
This book is too dense, basicly all you are getting is one third of the book on the subject. However, the explanation is well written and clear, but it follows few chapters after given example code.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book on C (Emphasis on Beginners)
This book is used in FSU's CGS 3408 course: "Introduction to Programming with the C Language."In the preface, the Deitels state that this book is for everyone (beginners to experts) who want to learn C.They've made a very good stab at that goal, but realistically, I'd have to say that those who are professional programmers in other languages will find this book too long for their needs. For beginners (and even those moderately versed in other languages), this is an excellent book.I really have only three minor gripes about it:

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn GL, not HTML
I want to address an issue that I have heard from many who have used this book. THIS IS NOT A GUIDE TO WEB DESIGN AND HTML! This book assumes that you understand the fundamentals of HTML and basic web design. This book teaches you how to use the features in GoLive, which are just easy buttons for basic HTML and CSS coding. If you want to learn how to make web pages, you will need to also buy a book on HTML, and probably CSS. Once you know these fundamentals, GoLive is a GREAT tool to use to make them all come together. This book explains nearly every tool in GoLive and briefly explains their partner HTML coding. This book teaches you all the neat features that GoLive has that will easily create complicated HTML codes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but really is like a classroom...
Kind of tedious but effective, this book gets you working on a weird sample web site at first ("Virtech U. The School of the Future", or something) in a series of lessons that take seem to drag on and on and get you itching to work on your bands web site. But it really does give you a good idea of how the tools, windows and palettes work. It's definitely better than a "for dummies" book (not as dumb), but it's still pretty easy to wrap your mind around. Out of all the books I've been through for CS2, this one is by far the most comprehensive, and I'd recommend the Adobe books over any others. Very solid and accurate information, straight from the source. Thank You.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only the Basics
We purchased the GoLive software because it promised to do "everything" we could possibly want for our business website... we purchased the GoLive book because we needed help figuring out how to make this non-user-friendly software fufill its promises. The book only covers the simplest of web designs and does NOT go into detail regarding anything that we require. We were very disappointed.I would only recommend this book or software to those who want a very simple, very generic website. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Teaching Resource
I have taught systems analysis and design methods for four years using this text or its previous editions. It has its strong and weak points. It covers the basics very well, and gives the students a good grounding in classical techniques. The authors have done a lot to include object-oriented techniques in the 6th and 7th editions. This meets my prefered approach since both techniques have their value, and analysts need to be familiar with both.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Coverage of the Field, but a bit too much Microsoft
With all the advances in computers, including the availability of industry specific software, industry still has huge demands for systems that facilitate the operation of their company. This book is oriented to teach those who design such systems. This book is intended to be a text for undergraduate college students. It is recommended that the student have at least a computer literacy class as a prerequisite. I believe that I would also require at least one programming cource to give the student some idea of what he will be asking the coders and programmers to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for System Analysts.
This book is clearly written for those who are seeking to be System Analysts. A significant chunk of pages are dedicated to their specific role.

1-0 out of 5 stars Heid should have stopped two editions ago . . .
I have been buying this book since its very first edition. Althoughthe ilife suite has added significant new features in version's 5 and 6, they are berely covered here. For example, iMovie's addition of styles, a major new development is covered in just 2 pages - a third of which is text explaining the feature! Also, this book is priced as if it had a DVD (it is the same price as the other editions with the DVD), even though the DVD is missing in action. The author's own 5 star rating is especially pathetic. This book needs a major overhaul to continue to be effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Price - Wealth of Knowledge
Not having purchased Jim Heid's previous editions of this book, I do not miss an instructional DVD that I never used. But this volume does everything that it portends to do. Along with Heid's constantly updated Web site as an instructive companion, The Macintosh iLife '06 is a joy to have and use while exploring the uses of iLife.

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife '06 by Jim Heid.....Helpful Tool
I needed to learn how to make a DVD, and Jim's book helped me get the job done. His visual guides coupled with his good sense of humor sprinkled into his writing style made the learning process seem less daunting.I aim to continue on with iMovie and iWeb, but the one application made the purchase of the book worthwhile. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A must if you need to pass the first time.
Depending on your experience this may be the only book you need to pass the 70-721 exam. I did require additional material but this book was certainly the major reason that I passed the exam with a 917 score.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding XP
It is worth every Penny you spend. I will refer back to itfor years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Workplace Compliance Purchase
I am within hours of retiring from "Corporate America." Then, why would I purchase such a boring piece of reading material? The answer is, the yuppies who run the company think they are doing us a favor by making us learn about technology that will be obsolete in weeks. Even worse they require the cost of that training to come out of our own pockets. I needed a training package to get a better review and a small bonus. After taxes the bonus was only three times the cost of the book. Whoopee! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the theory and practice of database design
This is one of the better books on the theory of database systems design. It is not meant to be a book on applications, rather it is a commonly used textbook in upper level undergraduate and graduate classes on the subject. However, this latest edition has reorganized the material somewhat and has added to its sections on XML and SQL in an attempt to show the theory through more real-world scenarios.
5-0 out of 5 stars the database practitioner's bible
I suppose there are two potential audiences for an introductory database book. The first audience consists of developers who need to know the very basics about databases to design andimplement a database computer application. For that group I would recommend Date's book, but only upon having sufficient "computer science maturity": i.e. having taken one year of programming, and possibly a course in discrete mathematics and/or data structures and algorithms. Without this maturity much of what Date writes will be very hard to appreciate if not comprehend. True, he gives numerous examples that are quite understandable, but he also spends many paragraphs discussing somewhat abstract issues to the novice that will make him or her want to skip ahead. A good example of this is the notion of thinking of a table as the current value of a relvar, or the importance of closure in the relational algebra. The paragraphs he spends on these subtle importances will frustrate the uninitiated reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best theoretical book on Database design ever!
I read this book for training as a senior DBA consultant and enjoyed CJ Date's excellent treatise on databases. This is the ultimate book on database theory. Like another reader commented its not how to get OCP/MCDBA whatever certifications but actually will make life better in the long run as a serious DBA pro. I now actually understand the basis of complex database topics such as cursors, data models, and concurrency/locking topics that previously are skimmed over in other books and training guides. Best book for a beginner and yeah its a bit dry and academic but CJ Date writes clearly. A MUST FOR SERIOUS COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS! ... Read more
