5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best reference for programmers new to Perl
I am not new to programming, but was new to Perl when I took a job that required a ton of pattern matching based scripting. I immediately convinced my boss to buy a bunch of Perl books, including this one. Usually, I am the type to use Google more than any book when learning a new language, but this book has been indispensible. I go to it first anytime I want to know how to do something in Perl, and 9 times out of 10 it is the only resource I need. I agree with other reviewers that this is not the book for beginning programmers, but I could have saved my boss a lot of money had I just had her buy me this one. It's all I've needed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If only all books were as clear as this one!!!
This is a great book for anyone involved in software development. Use cases are not only a great tool for designers they are a great tool for anybody involved in the development process.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Investment
Alistair Cockburn has a gift for writing. His explanations are very easy to follow and the writing style makes it seem like you are reading novel. I tried a number of books on use cases and this is by far the best. It contains a number of different styles. I used this book as a basis for developing standards for the company I work for.
4-0 out of 5 stars not confined to UML diagrams
Whatever your programming methodology, if you are involved in the design or reengineering of a project, then use cases are a vital starting point. Cockburn explains how these can serve as an important part of the boundary between the programmers and the non-programmer users and management. Given that the two (or three) groups often have quite different backgrounds, you can see the need for accurate and comprehensive examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really Solid Quality Book
This book and its companion "T-SQL Programming" are two great books, they are not for beginners and in some part requires a full immersion, they are not an easy reading... but at the end you you will have a really deep understanding of the topics they covers. I've found really useful to read it two times, the second one I've noticed that a lot of sentences takes a new light after you've a whole overview of all the topics. A definitively must have. Both !

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are only going to buy one SQL Server book...
There are occassions when I like to believe that I can write really smart SQL queries. Then I see the stuff that Itzik Ben-Gan and Steve Kass (the Tecknial Rewiwer of this book) come up with, and I crawl back under my rock.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to speak T-SQL from a master
More so than any other language I can think of SQL is so approachable because it is so logical. Most people can grasp the basics within hours if not minutes.Unfortunately this approachability is often confused with simplicity.Learning SQL may be easy but becoming proficient takes time and guidance.Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: TSQL Querying, part 1 of the 2 part series (Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: TSQL Programming) is so much more than examples of what to do and what not to do.Itzik Ben-Gan takes you behind the editor and inside the engine to teach you the how's and why's.I recently had the good fortune to attend a course given by Itzik Ben-Gan who is a passionate instructor and a recognized expert.Whether it is listening to him speak, reading his articles in SQL Server magazine or reading this fantastic book there is no one more capable to help you hone your SQL skills. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Use EIP as a guide
This book was exactly what I was looking for to help me scope an integration solution. For me, patterns help solve, better understand, and therefore, better communicate the technical issues of a complex software project; an enterprise integration project is complex.I was better able to communicate and estimate the scope of the project using EIPs as a GUIDE.The pattern icons (and Viso stencils found on the links page of the web site) saved me tremendous amounts time and narrative in the design documents.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for EAI, Messaging and Integration projects
This book joins my elite patterns book collection which include GoF, Core J2EE Patterns, Core Security Patterns and Refactoring to Patterns. And this book gonna be my first reference for all Integration projects.
5-0 out of 5 stars SW Integration Engineering at its best
Deserves to take place in the great line up of GoF, POSA1, POSA2, EAA, Core Security Patterns (other "patterns" books omitted intentionally).

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself, YES! You Can Do It!
I took a Jr. College Class on Final Cut Pro 5 and this was the textbook. The teacher would lecture for an hour and the rest of the time, we worked through the lessons in the book.At the end of the class, we were all able to produce our own short videos. This book is very step-by-step and to be honest, I think that I got more out of going through the lessons than listening to the teacher.I suggest Rick Young's "The Focal Easy Guide to Final Cut Pro 5 for new users and professionals" as a companion book. They both say the same thing, but in different ways. The lessons took me a little longer than the time indicated in each lesson frontpiece, but I sure learned a whole lot about making movies and FCP!

Very powerful hands-on learning tool when combined with the enclosed DVD. Covers all the functions of Final Cut Pro and allows you to neatly learn hands-on.

Please,,,,,,display that book's pages no 23,& 84 .book name:management information system(5th edition).4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but pricey
The text covers the topic with ample examples and diagrams, plus cases short and long. The level of detail is appropriate for a graduate level course. The book is too ...The authors could eliminate the chapter on the office environment. They should condense the chapters on questionnaires and system presentation.Another solution: put the lengthy end-of-chapter case material on a CD; it is doubtful that all of it is used in any course.Perhaps the authors have too much clout to be edited.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know, and then some...
The Kendalls have definitely created a comprehensive book on systems analysis. Virtually every aspect is covered here, and in plenty of detail. There are plenty of review questions and problems, hypothetical consulting situations, an ongoing case-study, and even an associated web-based case study.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I'm a beginning programmer and found this book immensely helpful.Other titles I sampled included Java Head-on, Big Java, and Ivor Horton's Java, and they just weren't as clear and straightforward as this book. The order of topics is the best I've seen, and the chapter on classes covers everything you need to know to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best Introduction into a programing language book there is
I have been programming for several years, but not professionally. Modula-2, C, C++, Fortran, APL and Jave and have read intro books into all of these progamming languages, but there was either too little or the clarity was not there. This book explains things very well and has a very good set of examples. It also goes into things a little deeper so even if you are not a beginner, you can still get what you want out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for a beginner
The book excels at teaching a reader new to either Java or any programming language. Savitch goes comprehensively through the core classes that come with the standard Java distribution. Also, he uses Java 5, which is the latest major release of Java. If you are going to start learning Java, you might as well start here, instead of using a text that deals with earlier versions.

Editorial Review

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Far and away the best book for everyone!
This is simply the best HTML and CSS book.It has basically everything you need to know, with easy-to-find, easy-to-understand, and concise descriptions. It it not "web for dummies," rather, it is a very sophisticated and realistic approach to HTML and CSS, without a lot of hype or self-promotion.If you want to hear people wax poetical about the "EM" unit, you can get the book by Lie & Bos, but I think Castro's book is far more useful. She gives links to many web sites to help with more advanced stuff (Javascript, etc.), which is nice, but the book itself is incredibly comprehensive. And the layout of the book is a model for all instructional texts.A winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars For Reference or for learning
Elizabeth Castro has been writing Visual Quickstart Guides to HTML and web design in an easy to understand manner. Now she provides resources for those who would be interested in web design that will create sites that are usable for years to come. Since I first picked up the fourth edition of this book, I have been hooked on the series, because its explanations are written on a level for the average person. The organization allows the reader to move at their own pace and easily refer back to topics that they want to refresh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coding
This book was a real help to me when I first became addicted to coding. The pictures are quite helpful, or at least more helpful than long explanations, and Elizabeth Castro is a fabulous writer. I learned so much that I went on to learn many other programming and coding languages with ease. You don't need to have any experience to use this book, it explains everything. Visual QuickStart Guide's are the best type in the market, cheap and easy to understand. So if you are itching to learn another computer language, I suggest checking them out! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the standard text for introductory advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate level courses in signal processing. The text gives a coherent and exhaustive treatment of discrete-time linear systems, sampling, filtering and filter design, reconstruction, the discrete-time Fourier and z-transforms, Fourier analysis of signals, the fast Fourier transform, and spectral estimation. The author develops the basic theory independently for each of the transform domains and provides illustrative examples throughout to aid the reader. Discussions of applications in the areas of speech processing, consumer electronics, acoustics, radar, geophysical signal processing, and remote sensing help to place the theory in context. The text assumes a background in advanced calculus, including an introduction to complex variables and a basic familiarity with signals and linear systems theory. If you have this background, the book forms an up-to-date and self-contained introduction to discrete-time signal processing that is appropriate for students and researchers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Destined for a standard?
It is my pleasure to comment on this book which I recently purchased. I have two of Dr. Oppenheim's previous books. This book is a core integration of a topic with too many diverse starting points (mine was digital filters derived from Prony's method, not in the book by name). Dr. Bose was my first EE Professor. Alan Oppenheim was my second EE instructor. Alan (just finished MSEE at the time) had not published a book yet, but his focus was always on your questions. His product was your understanding. If this book is for your shelf, it will not harm it. If this topic is for your mind, this book was meticulously written for you.Lance Webb, PhDEE

5-0 out of 5 stars Six star book on Digital Signal Processing
This is the outstanding 2nd edition of Oppenheim's classic DSP book, which for over two decades was the only real choice for a textbook on the subject. That was too bad, since the first edition was probably the worst thing I have ever seen in print - terse, incomprehensible, and with only a few awful and poorly illustrated examples. When I decided to take a refresher course in DSP, I was horrified to see our class would be using the second edition of that horrendous text. What I found instead was a completely rehabilitated textbook! This is not a beginner's DSP textbook by any stretch of the imagination, but absolutely everything is explained and there are plenty of well worked out examples. The end-of-chapter problems are broken down into simple, intermediate, and advanced problems with quite a few mind-puzzlers in the advanced section. Plus, the answers to the first 20 problems in every chapter are in the back of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book from initial reading

BusinessObjects XI (Release 2): The Complete Reference is not just about how to use this module or that module, it is also about how to maximize your Business Objects (BOBJ) investment.Cindi does a great job explaining how to use many of the modules (she focuses on the core products) but she opens the book with valuable advice on managing Business Objects across your company.BOBJ is not just another little application for a specific project, it, as with many BI tools, can transform your business if you allow it to (and save you alot of money).

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Digital Photography to a New Level
Dan's book has literally changed the way I look at color. His writing style is entertaining and his organization of the book is excellent for what unfolds to be a complex subject. The concept of color perception is hard to grasp. And, it's quite another thing to understand its subtlties when processing digital images. The question always arises: Why don't my image files look as good as what I saw? Dan's book answers that question and many others as it guides the reader/photographer through a few easy steps that will, at a minimum, raise the output quality of images tenfold. For advanced users, there are many gems waiting in this book that will take image control and presentation to another level. If you could have only two digital photography books on the shelf, I recommend this one and Stephen Johnson's On Digital Photography.

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesnt cut to the chase.
This book is a good one......I guess. The reason why I am not sure is that I have had this book for over a year now and I still havent managed to read it completely. Everytime I start reading it, it loses my interest after the third chapter. The authour would have been happier writing poetry about the LAB colour space. He keeps ranting on and on and on about the LAB colour space but when it comes to actually teaching you something new he does it in less than half the pages of the book. It gets to the point where the reader just goes - Ok, LAB is THE colour space to work in, now would you please stop telling me that after every other paragraph? Too much uselss information and very less practical knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Much truth is stated in the other reviews here. Although this book can be difficult and wordy, and some of the comments regarding layout and presentation of content are valid, this book is indeed an extremely important work to read in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of Photoshop. I personally found that this book, along with Dan's other great "Professional Photoshop" series, took my skills at post-processing to entirely new levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really Solid Quality Book
This book and its companion "T-SQL Querying" are two great books, they are not for beginners and in some part requires a full immersion, they are not an easy reading... but at the end you you will have a really deep understanding of the topics they covers. I've found really useful to read it two times, the second one I've noticed that a lot of sentences takes a new light after you've a whole overview of all the topics. A definitively must have. Both !

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book
This is an excellent book that should be in the library of every serious database developer. It is by far the most detailed book that I have ever read on T-SQL programming. There are many cookbooks or sql recipes books but IMHO this book is many steps ahead of the rest of the books. It is well written, with realistic examples and extremely precise. The one thing that I really loved in this book was that for every problem it provides many alternative solutions and explains the advantages of one solution over the other.Again congratulations to the authors for their great job.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a book
As someone who has followed Itzik for a while, I expected quite a bit with this book. In every way, shape, manner and form, it delivered.
