The Bridge Between Knowledge and Understanding: Making Solaris Really Sing
"Solaris Internals" and its predecessor "Sun Performance and Tuning" are wonderful books for giving you the knowledge to know whats actually happening under the covers, but many SA's admit struggling when it comes to translating that into usable day-to-dayunderstanding of the systems on which they manage.Just knowing how it works isn't enough to be really useful, what you need is the ability to look at the system and work out how what your seeing fits what you know.
If you run Solaris you need this book!
This book is a standalone companion to the "Solaris Internals" (2nd Ed) book. Where "Solaris Internals" covers the kernel architecture and theory, this is a practitioners guide that independently introduces, describes and provides indepth examples of Solaris performance monitoring, tracing and debugging tools, including mdb & dtrace.

An excellent reference for System Administrators
Power UNIX and Linux users will want to expand their skills. It's inevitable. Some will get frustrated and drop out and some will work their way through it.
Great reference, full of examples, for all UNIX/Linux/BSD users
At first glance, this book seems like a typical O'Reilly book: a narrow title, rich in material, and is beneficial to a much wider audience than the title reveals. It covers a wide range of system administration subjects and goes way beyond just the essentials.

Watch your options!
It is good book, decent reference but if you like I'm just starting out get "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD course. Yes it is pricey but you're getting precisely what you have been paying for. I found this book to be great but in the same time I found the DVD course to be unmatched. The ability to sit down and listen and watch and follow is can not be substituted with a book. If you are more on economy side, I found that there's no economy as I'm now of the subjects that with book like that, or with any other book it would take me forever to come up.
A 'must have' reference!
Arnold Robbins' UNIX IN A NUTSHELL, 4TH EDITION defines what UNIX means in a changing world where there is no standard-bearer, covering common parts of the leading Unix-like operating systems, how to understand and locate commands which work across versions, and how to use tools which have become a 'part' of Unix even though they don't ship with the operating system, from CVs and GNU Make to GDB, curl and wget. UNIX operating system users simply must have this reference.

Great Solaris System Admin Book
have used this book to upgrade my Solaris Admin certification to Solaris 10. I've had a few versions of Solaris certifications, and I can say it for sure that this is the best SCSA certification book I have read so far. The author does an excellent job in staying true to the exam objectives and yet presenting the material as a cohesive course in basic Solaris 10 system administration. There is a perfect logical flow. The author starts each topic from scratch and covers it to an adequate depth, while defining and explaining all terms and concepts on the way. That makes it a self contained book.
Not really impressed
I've taken and been a certified Sun Solaris administrator for many years.I decided to upgrade my certification to Solaris 10 and purchased this book as a reference.It's a good reference, but was not really a contributing factor in preparing for the exam.
Passed Both the Exams
Passed both the exams (310-200 and 310-202) by studying just from this book. Feels great! Along the way, this book cleared many doubts and confusions that I had. I'm very pleased with my score on the exam, and with this book. Great book! It's going to stay in my shelf.

Good book -weak in areas
I bought this book for my Solaris 10 Upgrade exam -result, passing score!However unless you are an experienced SA,I would recommend not using this book as your sole study guide.There are a few technical inaccuracies in addition the material fails to delve deeply enough into certain key exam areas such as Sol on X86. Post-exam, I view it as a nice Sol 10 reference to keep around.

Good but not perfect
A well written book, gives you almost the information you need to pass the certification exams and also some additional information. Unfortunately it still lack a few information that SUN ask in some questions. I think this is a good book and reference, but you need to already know Solaris and SUN platforms or you'll find this book a bit difficult.

It's really a nice book!
It's a good book, it contains all details about Solaris 10..& repeating Solaris '10'..as there're many books claiming it's subject is Solaris 10 but in fact they don't cover any of Solaris 10 new topics..this book does.

Not suoitable for sun solaris 10 security exam
Took sun solaris 10 security exam today, the exam is very heavy on containers (Global vs non global, how to configure BART inglobal environment and will it flow down to non global), how to perform patching in global and non global environment, what is easiest way to setup 20 containers inside the same machine, definitions of key terms in Kerberos, what does kerberos each component do (drag and drop) and SFM and ipsec and ip filters syntax to block dns lookup. How to update the system automatically and what commands to use for automatic updating choose all correct commands . The textbook only covers 30% of the solaris 10 test only.

Unclear, unfocussed and hard to use
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I find this book quite useless. I am a system administrator with more than 8 years experience on the Sun platform.
Good study guide but you still need hands on experience
This is a very good study guide for the Sun Certified Security Administrator for Solaris Certification. However you will also need and should have some hand on experience with the OS. Don't worry though you can download the OS free at Sun for both SPARC and Intel platforms.

Good Starting Point
This has very superb explanations about the Kerberos authentication concepts.As a Windows system administrator, this has helped me immensely in understanding what's under the hood of Active Directory.
Kerberos intimidates a lot of people, don't be one of them
I got started using Kerberos many moons ago, at my university. This is probably how many people got to know about it. While I didn't use it very much, it's there that I learned the basics and experimented a bit with Kerberos. Interest in it took off after Microsoft incorporated Kerberos authentication mechanisms into Windows 2000. Suddenly it wasn't such arcane knowledge.
Reasonably thorough introduction and guide, but needs updated
Like most O'Reilly titles, this book covers the general topics one needs to be conversant in a given topic.Take what you read, do a few web searches, experiment with the technology, discuss the concepts with others - this book will give you a solid foundation to get started.Moreover, like other O'Reilly topics one can see errata, etc. on the O'Reilly website.This book easily meets the high expectations one has of a book from this publisher: conversational tone, lots of hands-on examples, and broad coverage of applications using this technology.

Extremely disappointing...
This is a regurgitated copy of his Solaris 9 book... It goes into no detail whatsoever on the new Solaris 10 features... ZFS, SMF, Partitioning, etc... Newcomers to solaris who read this book would have no idea about milestones, smf, etc, and would assume Solaris 10 still uses just the RC scripts to boot.
Definitely not complete!
This book was very disappointing.Although it seems to be complete for Solaris 9, I was not able to find information about smf, inetconv and other new features of Solaris 10.I would not recommend it for Solaris 10 users or administrators.

Don't bother
The other reviews pretty much hit it.This book sucks.Lots of pages are wasted on networking concepts and things like Zones, D-Trace and SMF are never talked about. ... Read more

I cannot find anything in this book
I purchased this book long time ago and every time I'm trying to use it I think I should of return it back. It is a huge book, more then 1000 pages and yes, it has a lot of information. But it is absolutely useless because there is no definite logic in the content and index made so that you will never find what you need unless you know precisely what the command is. Very disappointing!

They should all be this easy to follow
I bought this book for work when I needed to know alot about Solaris in a hurry.It quickly got me up to speed and has since carried me through two undergraduate Unix programming courses.The text is written in plain language, and is supported by excellent examples.When I didn't know how to read the man pages, Mark Sobell's book came through for me.If I could only have one book on Unix, this would be the one.

Could not put the book down
I bought this book thinking that i would get some good ideas in order to get a little bit more performance from our servers, however once i started reading i could not put it down until 5 hours later. Total Coverage
This books answers the questions that most others do not. A very technical approach, with great editing and no errors. The books covers architectural issues, Oracle tuning but scores really big in optimizing the Solaris environment (OS and hardware/disk).

This book doesn't belong on your bookshelf it belongs on your desk beside your workstation. Mr. Packer's clarity, conciseness and comprehensiveness in his coverage of a complex topic is a tour de force that few technical writers are able to achieve these days. Written for an intelligent reader in mind, the subject matter is explained simply, directly and elegantly. No profusions of analogies, this author knows what he's talking about and he can explain it.Read more

Great book for New or Old System Administrators
The breadth and depth of knowledge in this book is amazing.
Uh wow: Written by an true experienced solaris admin
This book is amazing as its not a rehash of points you need to know about to pass the Solaris Certified Sys Admin exam. Instead this is a true to life list of common issues/solutions a REAL sys admin would face in day to day work. The basics of hardware is fantastic and I wish I had this info at the start of my career. Webflash/jumpstart.. fantastic and now part of my server environment.NIS ... fantastic...... DYnAMIC RECONFIGURATION! VOLUME MANAGEMENT!!!This is a True System Adminstrator's Book. Note this won't help you pass to SCSA as if you need to read up on the format of the /etc/passwd file then this book is not for you.
Good book, but needs errata on wiley site.
I think the second edition of the book is fine, except for a couple of errors in the script examples. Although the errors seem trivial there should be an errata published on Wiley's website showing the corrections. ... Read more

Unusual problem with your Solaris application?
If there's some weirdness going on with your Solaris app, this is the best place to look, short of reading the Solaris source code, for a diagnosis. It's dry reading just for the sake of reading, but when it's connected to some puzzling behavoir in your application, it becomes very exciting to understand exactly why, for example, that thread is spinning...

must-have for professionals but has problems
Ok so here's the deal.The author misleads you in order to "simplify" things.This is a disservice because as a system programmer you have to know the real behavior, not somebody's watered down, easy to digest, but dangerously incorrect simplification.All other paths lead to kernel panic.

Not very good book
I don't understand why the rating of this book is so good. To me it is not realistic. This is an avarage book. The book is missing details. There are lots of mistakes. It is not complete. I understand that to write the book on Solaris(Unix) and explain all the details of it, the book should be over 1000 pages. If the authors don't have such a patience and dedication they should not write the books. The should leave students to read documentation from Sun website or man pages. I don't have any book to recomend. The book is still good comparing to other books on Unix, which are terrible. But chapters are not finished.

The ONLY Solaris SA's Book Worth Having On Your Desk
There are lots of Solaris books on the market, most of which are horrible.This book is the only book that I've seen that covers the OS very completely in a very small page count.Subjects like RBAC, NIS, NFS, ACL's, and other topics that are typically confusing and lengthy reads are presented in this book in only a few short paragraphs but with absolute clarity.Other books talk about something, this book teaches you how it works and how to do it without all the pointless chatter.

nice first UNIX book
I like easy to read book and I also had assumed that learning UNIX is not necessarily has to be a struggle. This book stood up to my expectations almost perfectly: it is very well written and clearly expressed work. It does not overwhelm with technical details and does not press too much. I also followed an advise in someone review and purchased "UNIX Essentials" DVD that is complete unix course recorded. These two nicely complement one another. You watch it and you read it. If you didn't catch it from the first try you watch it again and read it again. In two months I found myself confident to that extend that gave advises to our system administrator and he accepted them because there were subjects that he wasn't completely sure. What I can say, in three month I passed my first interview and got a job! Sure it is a way to start there much of more advanced reading that will take over you with a time however these two provide you with the BASIS!
It nice book, very useful text.
It is nice book! It is well written and it covers many useful subjects. This book offers as much for a beginner as it is possible to convey from the printed page. I pared this book with "UNIX Essentials" DVD that I have found here on Amazon and what is a nice couple they made! I learned in first two weeks that much that consulted our system administrator on some subjects! While the book provides more of conception the DVD course contributed to my workflow, they even have sent diplomas to me!

Initially Impressed, Later Disappointed
I got this book so that I can get help tinkering with Solaris, being a newbie to Solaris.Overall, I think there are excellent explanations, which is very helpful for novice users.So, I was initially impressed and happy with this book.
A Decent Solaris Book if you have lots of time on your hands
This book certainly contains a lot of information.Nobody can question that the author is informed.For me, this book fell short of the mark because the good info was often buried in needless chatter.

Really usefull!!
I've been thinking about deploying LDAP in the Solaris Environment and last year I bought a previous version of this book (ASIN: 0130306789 ), but it was really a disappointing experience. The book was telling mostly about what LDAP is, but not much about how to use it in Solaris.
