Only if you really are a dummy!
While it's true that the Dummies series are supposed to provide a way for the less-proficient to easily get their feet wet, this installment is so annoyingly scripted as to be headache-inducing. The author attempts to lighten the load by injecting humor into the book. But the jokes are bad and they mostly just clutter the author's run-on sentences. The text is so cutesy at times I found myself actually getting fatigued reading it. This book could be simplified and probably cut down by 50 pages if the author would dispense with the "funny" interjections and just focus on the topic. Who edited this book?
The writing in this book is muddy, and like another reviewer here, I had to buy a second book to figure out what this book was saying. Since Dummies books are for beginners, a logical order running from easy to difficult should be used. This author is all over the place. Wow - amazing this ever got published!
The author mingles in many personal remarks which clutters the content substantially, making for a difficult, annoying read.After finding another introductory & intermediate CSS book, & then comparing the two, I can honestly say CSS For Dummies is not organized well, has examples which do not contain vital information or a variety of applications.Based on other books I've owned & read, this book is a poor choice when learning CSS.Read more

Book is general guide to Excel for science & engineering.
This book is really just what I needed to break the manual data-parsing habit!The examples are mostly from the realm of chemistry, but they're generally applicable to lab, field, and even scholastic or administrative applications.Mr. Billo has plenty of experience and has been generous in sharing it.As a bench tech who came to Excel without any prior education in the use of spreadsheet applications for comparative analyses, I highly recommend this book.
Excel for Biomedical Researchers
I have bought several books on using Excel for scientists, engineers, etc.However, of the six I have bought, this one by Billo is the most helpful. Excellent for Chemist with Basic Knowledge of Spreadsheets

excel modeling
I have returned this book more than 2 weeks ago but I have not seen credit on my credit card yet and sent an email while ago, and ask when I will get refunded but nobody really gave me any clear answer.

Missing files
The "Live In-class Problems" that are halfway done are only available to instructors. This book can be fully utilized if it is used by a instructor in the class, otherwise, a self learner would not have an access to the required files needed to do the end of chapter exercises.

Needs Improvement
This is NOT a book for beginners; if you're new to Microsoft Excel, avoid this book! Even though the back of the book says it's a reference for beginning to advanced users, this book will confuse you if you're a beginner. It's a book for people who already have some knowledge about Excel; I'm in the intermediate to advanced user category, and even I get confused by some of the explanations provided in the book. Perfect for Advanced Users!
In the section where I work, everyone uses Excel, but outside of entering data and applying a couple of formulas / formats, they are generally clueless as to Excel 97's power.Just two weeks of toying with differentthings listed in this bible have made me the department guru! this book got this old Lotus user up and running in 1 day
I loved the dictionary type format with easy index and retrieval, I didn't have to "highlight" anything it is a great how to book as well as a dictionary type system for quick look up and do it....I went straight outto find his the authors VBA programming guid

covers a little of everything but leaves out details.

Excellent Book for Intermediate Users!
This book is a great reference and excellent starting point for users that would like to be at an intermediate level. Blattner does a good job with formulas/functions, pivots, formatting, etc. He also threw in a few good tips. It would be nice if QUE would cover more VBA. They touch on it a bit with macros, but do not include the Object references. A great reference for Excel
I've purchased a library of guides for different applications over the past two years and I now own 2 Special Edition Books... If you want to go to the next level with Excel this is the book. It has detailed function, chart, and list management coverage and is worth checking out... A great book.. Thanks

Very poorly written, "assembly line" book
I have found other books in the Que Special Edition series to be very useful.This one has thorough coverage of the topic, but is extremely poorly written.The author's careless use of terminology, poor choice of examples, and lack of clear definitions and explanations makes what should be fairly simple subjects very difficult.Read more

Great for students
I am student at LCCC in PA.I was able to go through the whole book in 2 days although, through my own fault, didn't order the book until the second week of class.This book is A+ material, but the only snag is in dealing with "tracking changes".When you set tracking for All (activity) and Everyone (users), close Excel, re-open the file, all your settings are changed.BUT, your changes are still being tracked.I was deeply annoyed by this, it is Microsoft's fault IMO. Still the authors should have included a warning or something.This wasn't until the very end of the book in Project 8.The rest of the book is very well organized, very accurate (no mistakes in grammar or accuracy).I also like the reinforcement where you do a task two or three times to make sure you know it by heart.I would recommend this book, except maybe that I don't like buying seperate books for access and word to get the Office specialist designation. Challenging Textbook, full of practical Excel techniques
Best for an MBA textbook or very dedicated self-study for quantitatively oriented business analysts. You learn a lot of Excel skills and how to produce practical tables, charts and other exhibits in Excel.
Waste of Money
I am using this book for a MBA class at a Top 20 school. Our class is focused on students who have not had any formal background in statistics. This book lacks in depth explanations for its problems. Its solutions manual is marginally helpful because it also does not explain how it reaches the answers.

Not for beginners, but very good
I'd have to agree that this book is not appropriately named.I found understanding the code more difficult than several books aimed at a moderately advanced audience, such as Walkenbach's Power Programming.
In no way is this aimed at the "absolute beginner"
This was my first foray into the "For the absolute beginner" series of books, and I understand now why it isn't nearly as popular as the "for dummies" or "demystified" series of instructional manuals.The main problem with this book is that it absolute is NOT intended for people with no previous experience in Excel or VBA, despite the disclaimer on the cover that states "No Experience Required!".A true beginner will be absolutely baffled by the concepts presented throughout, and will definitely walk away with a sour taste in their mouth.

Don't listen to the doorknobs who rated this book a one star because they couldn't understand the programming concepts presented on "page 12".
