Editorial Review

Many C/C++ programmers know at least the basics of TCP/IP, but becomingan expert network programmer usually requires a lot of experience and sometimeshard-to-find knowledge. Written to give the intermediate or advanced developer aleg up in creating robust network applications using TCP/IP and relatedprotocols, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for developing network programs
I bought this about 4 years ago.It was extremely helpful for the socket programs that I have had to develop.I don't do TCP/IP socket programming full time, but this helped me to develop several robust applications.I used it to develop a BGP peering monitor application as a server that also uses sockets for remote reporting.I also used it in developing an active network probing application that looks for forwarding plane faults, making use of various active sending and recieving sockets: UDP, raw and ICMP.

2-0 out of 5 stars entry-level textbook disguised as "tips"
I don't know why this book is rated so highly. There's nothing wrong with the content (what little there is), but I feel that it's misrepresented as a book for intermediate level network programmers.I was expecting discussion on when to use select() vs. multi-threaded vs. single-threaded servers, for example. But this book is more for beginners (Tip #1, "Understand the difference between connectionless and connection-oriented protocols").
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect reference for network programmers
This book is a perfect addition to the library of any network programmer. It brings the balance between practicality and knowledge to a topic as TCP/IP Programming. If you want more knowledge go with Stevens, but if you want to learn fast or to review some concepts or even have a reference book, this is your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I've read through the first couple of chapters and I must say this is a good book. The thing I like most about this book is that the authors take time to not only give you working code but explain what the heck blocks within the programs do. If you are a novice programmer you may want to pick up a different book because it does assume you have a good understanding of basic C# programming.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good practical manual
This book teaches TCP Socket programming using C# in a very efficient step-by-step manner.
4-0 out of 5 stars many useful classes
C# comes with some classes that greatly alleviate a lot of low level issues in using TCP/IP sockets. You can contrast this book with the classic text by Comer and Stevens from the early 90s. The latter used a lot of grubby C code. But now in C#, you have such things as TcpListener to listen for incoming connections. Then, when a connection is established, you can improve performance with buffering by using BufferedStream.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book with well explained working examples
I have to hand it to Mr. Comer and Stevens, they have done an excellent job writing a book that explains everything clearly with very well defined (and actually working) examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Like Cliff Notes
This is a great book and I see why some teachers chose it for grad students. I didn't do well in networks last semester because I had to learn BSD TCP/IP sockets from sources like book snippets my teacher gave me, man pages, and various Internet sources. The textbook I had to buy for class has almost no C code or any explanations about BSD sockets. So, I invested into this and the Richard Stevens (UNIX Network Programming) book. Both are excellent assests.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Text
I have been using Internetworking with TCP/IP Volume III for almost ten years now to teach a graduate course on client server programming.I think it is perhaps the most perfect textbook ever written.Comer's code is exquisite and can be used to teach clear and efficient coding in C.His explanations are perfect. He says everything that needs to be said, and no more. His presentation about the foundation of all distributed computing is clear concise and on target.Students require some reminders about the fact that this book can't be read like a novel, or like any less competent textbook. They need to read and carefully consider each line.Comer includes everything that is needed in the book and its appendices. In every case, you see very careful and concise statements of how things really work.I just reread his chapter on NFS this morning and was reminded about how he can take the complex and invisible and make it completely understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Supplement
This is a great book if you are looking for a decent introduction to the Sockets API or just a quick reference.Prior knowledge of C programming and networking concepts is required. It is very easy to read, and not overwhelming like the Stevens book.It covers TCP and UDP sockets as well as name resolution.Money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good service
This was my first shop at Amazon and I had lot of expectations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction to Socket Programming
The other reviewers have it right: the book is a nice introduction to socket programming. All of the 'C' socket functions are there. Topics such as signals and multithreading are covered. The book is succinct but not simplistic.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners
If you're just a beginner, or you're moving to Winsock from Unix; then the book covers all you need.4-0 out of 5 stars Your Winsock book - by default - if you really need one!
I decided to write this note after a fourth person asked me about my favorite book for winsock programming.3-0 out of 5 stars More about design than actual code
The book is much more about how to design a service than about TCP/IP. If you want detailed explanations about sockets, you will not find them here. But if you want different scenarios to design a service, this is the bookfor you. The code snippetes are trivial and poorly explained. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick jump start
Practical Guide Series did it again. They put together very consice reference on useful working examples in java. I needed to program quick and dirty program for my class using TCP/IP protocol, and the examples in the book really helped. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the book's site was down the whole day and I could not access any of the code, so I had to type it all out. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not cover java 1.4 (NIO)
I will agree with the other reviewers that this is a really well written book.5-0 out of 5 stars The Right Book To Buy
I very much agree with the other reviews on this site. This book hits the meat of using TCP/IP with Java. Some prerequisites for this book are the following topics. I recommend that you get a single book for each topic.Read more
