5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Guide to Broadway
Seth Rudetsky is fiercely talented, an encyclopedia of Broadway facts and lore, and (most importantly) hysterically funny. He also knows everyone in the business and is the King (Queen?) of Broadway benefits and concerts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips from a true insider!
This book gives you every inside tip (okay, ALMOST every tip) you need to know about theater in New York.It also happens to be a very entertaining read.Rudetsky's wit shines through as he gives you a history of "essential" Broadway. If you're a fan of theater, this is a must read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AmAHzing...but what would you expect from this ultimate insider?
If you're addicted to Seth's Big Fat Broadway on Sirius (channel 77--Broadway's Best) you MUST have this book.Seth is FIERCE!Worth the price for the website information alone.

I love to travel to places where I can hang out at the pool naked and read a book. I also enjoy nude beaches and other outdoor activities that afford a place to lose the clothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gay primer to the Disney parks
Aside from being a fun read, this book is right on target because gay men and lesbians look for different things in recreation places than heteros often do. Most importantly, we want gay-friendly places where we know we can be ourselves and have a good time. This book is full of fun, frank descriptions of the attractions (yes to Disneyland's Fantasmic!; no to California Adventure's Golden Zephyr), and the Fairy Facts are great-alone they could make a book. The authors provide an hilarious revisionist read on the Disney characters like the fairies, but Alice in Wonderland makes a great fag hag circuit queen if you look carefully. The book also highlights the ways in which the Disney parks are gay-friendly, tricks and tips for getting good seats for attractions and minimizing your wait in lines, reviews of the eating establishments (a culinary lifesaver!), and the top spots to share a gay moment (like the Hall of Presidents in Walt Disney World), all to help you get the most out of each of the theme parks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Useful Guide to Disneyworld and Disneyland
Not only have I bought this book for my own use but for gifts for all the people I know who are going with and without children to Disney. The book gives insight into the various attractions, helping one to know what is age appropriate and what you should definitely see (especially for first time goers). The hotel and restaurant critiques are great! What I loved the most was that while reading a well written Guide, you smiled and laughed all along the way.5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Queens
I read about this book in Out Magazine and bought it for a recent trip to Orlando. It was just great. It's also really funny. And I dont think you would have to be gay or lesbian to really appreciate and use the book to get the most out of your Disney vacation. Highly recommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No match for Paulsen
Every once in a while we go up to Ely, MN, and spend a day or so dogsledding. So, prior to this year's trip, I bought a few books on the Iditarod and mushing in general.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I thought the book was well written - I read at every opportunity, even my lunch time at work!I'm from South Africa, where winter day temperatures hover around 15 deg C (59 F) and I've seen snow maybe twice in my life, but this story was written in such a way that I'm burning to try mushing myself!Imagine that!I've ordered other books on mushing which, I'm hoping, will convince me that I shouldn't be so crazy.4-0 out of 5 stars a lot safer than taking on the iditarod yourself
This is far from the best-written non-fiction book I have ever read. The journalist's experience writing in the shorter form of articles shows through in the disjointed feel of much of the narrative. This is still well worth the read if you have any interest in Alaska, mushing, or man's working relationship with dogs.Even without those interests you may well find the book enjoyable.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The politics of an Obsession
I loved this book. It was honest, although at times it did teeter on the pretentious. I'm not sure if there really was a valid point to his parallel tale of Romania's last king and mistress and Benderson's affair with the his Romanian hustler. Perhaps Benderson was just trying to displace some of his guilty feelings over exploiting a poor and desperate young man. By the end it really doesn't matter - his rose tinted glasses are off and it's all just grime, grit as dirty as uncut diamonds. I came to realize that everyone is an accomplice in their own undoing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A smart director would snatch up the rights
I am straight and was wonderfully surprised how "The Romanian" depicted facets of my own love life and how Benderson's relationship with his mother was similar --the same suffocating control and tenderness. Benderson jolts us right out of our outdated heterosexual and homosexual bourgeois notions. Whether it is his mother or a shameful street hustler, Benderson is only too aware that we are all flawed; that we are only all too human. A shocker for sure but almost right from the beginning, we stop judging and start to search, along with Benderson, deep into our own souls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
While I may like this book partly because I know its main locale, anyone who has ever loved a person or a place with pain, obsessed, fantasized, felt exiled, or contemplated history and fate, will find this a fascinating read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As field guides go, this one is as fun to read as it is informative
I can't think of a field guide I've come across that reads as this one does. You really feel like the authors (Robert McDonald and Kathie Berquist) are your personal travel guides. Their witty asides, amusing anecdotes, and assessments of the Chicago gay environs and establishments are refreshingly honest and are often dead-on. So treat yourself, not only help you navigate Gay Chicago, but to learn that reading a field guide as well done as this can be as much fun as the adventures themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars The must-hav-right-now gay guide
Only the naive would believe that modernization brought homosexuality to Japan. The Utopia Guide to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan introduces the present state of homosexuality in East Asia, via its historical and literary vintage, and brings it to a manageable head in this must-have handbook. Drink deep!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
The Spartacus and Damron guides have their place on any travel bookshelf but this book has something that they do not...namely, very detailed, firsthand descriptions of the venues listed. The authors descriptions of the West Coast cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver) are pretty much spot on.For example, when in Vancouver I noticed how young all the clubgoers were and when reading the entry on that city I saw that this was not just my own perception but reality. He describes the scene in Portland, perhaps the most underrated city on the West Coast as "scruffy" but not in a perjorative sense, but rather endearingly. Each city chapter is logically broken down into nightlife, eats, sights, etc.Aside from being a cutie (based on his back cover photo) the author is always funny and perceptive in his comments. This is one of those books that I pull off my bookshelf fairly regularly and it's tragic that it is currently out of print with no new edition in sight.Early editions aren't too hard to come by but good luck tracking down the last (3rd edition) which I recommend without reservations!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good research
I'm glad I have this book to refer to.No matter where we consider traveling, I have this handy book to know what's "out" there for us.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great general guide to places you might miss...
I bought this book back in 2001 for a trip to New York. Not knowing anything about "the city", I needed some help. Along with this one, I purchased a few other guides focusing on gay oriented places in the U.S. and New York, but this one was far better. With it's insightful mini reviews of places shown in the guide, I got ALOT from this book. From places to stay, to places to see, it'll give you a great base to start with when trying to find nightlife, or otherwise, in ANY new city. I'm taking it back with me again to New York and to Seattle this time. But, be weary, as with any guide, places change, and what you read might not be as bad as it says it is, or it could be worse! Thanks for reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious journey on the ocean
This is a great, un-put downable read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing chicken about this author
I have read some of Gillian Kendall's travel stories and she has an eye for the telling detail. Although this book is more memoir than travel commentary, she manages to include enough background to set the scene for this genuinely funny page turner. Kendall finds herself signed up to teach English as a Second Language to an all-male crew of Chinese seamen, with her only non-crew companion an ex-jock from Texas on board as a technical adviser. The book recounts her voyage not only from China to the U.S. but from initial apprehension and self doubt to the sure knowledge that she has not only taught a good number of her pupils to make themselves understood in English, she has also become something of a hero to them -- and not only because of her teaching. I laughed out loud more than once and admired her apparent conquest of an improbably dificult task. Inventive teaching methods, respect for each other's culture (except perhaps for chicken feet on the menu or the reported promiscuity of American women) and genuine curiosity and humanity made this a journey Ifelt must have been pivotal to both crewnmen and author. There is a subplot of Kendall's indecision about her love life back in Texas, and actually, her love life in general. If I have a criticism, it is that the reader never finds out how that aspect all worked out. But that's fodder for another book from this talented author. I can't wait.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Slice of Life on a Chinese Working Boat
"Mr. Dings Chicken Feet" is a well paced can't put down memoir by Gillian Kendall. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to sail as part of the crew of a working boat, this will satisfy your curiousity. The author has a marvelous sensitivity and excitement about world wide cultures (she also taught in Egypt) and she manages to take us with her to Shanghai and back to Texas. She uses gentle irony to tease us along and includes an ongoing running joke that we never find the punchline for unless we read the book through.I am still missing the characters and writing although it has been more than a week since I finished reading it. ... This book is not really a guide book. It certainly gives infotmation about gay life and venues in the main countries of South East Asia. It's probably the first book of its kind about this part of the world. And that's already a good reason to buy it. But you must know that most of the book is made out of Internet pages prints. You get some info but also many links, most of which are incomplete. Some travellers comments included are over 2 years old.
