Editorial Review

Although the sheer size of this dense workbook might cause initial hyperventilation--280 full-size sheets of text--take heart (and a deep breath!): the many self-assessment tools and calming techniques presented in this fifth edition can help overcome anxiety and promote physical and emotional well-being. First introduced in 1980, the book received praise for presenting a comprehensive look at stress, its physical manifestations, and the multiple ways it can be managed. Twenty years later, its well-organized chapters on breathing, relaxation, meditation, thought stopping, and body awareness still guide the reader through copious self-help techniques to try and, eventually, master. Other chapters, including job stress management, goal setting and time management, and assertiveness training, focus on daily scenarios people often find distressing. Lessons in identifying key elements that trigger unpleasant responses and in reacting differently to these elements are designed to defuse perceived conflicts. For this edition, coauthors Martha Davis (psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, CA), Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman (licensed clinical social worker with Kaiser Permanente Online), and Matthew McKay (clinical director of Haight-Ashbury Psychological Services, San Francisco, CA) have added topics on worry control, anger management, and eye-movement therapy. New diagrams and a more reader-friendly format should appeal to readers, despite a few typos and graphical mishaps. This is a valuable tool for therapists, their patients, and the stressed-at-large. 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Better than 10 years therapy
WOW! After spending a number of years in therapy, I must say that I have found this book to be profoundly more helpful than any of the therapy. I truly wished every therapist, especially the HMO therapist that I have had to deal with, had a copy and practiced the formulas in this book. Highly recommended! Read this book and give a copy to you therapist and/or Physician for them to actually read and use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sound, commonsense guide to massive energy increases and weight loss
This is just an excellent book.I have an older copy and it starts off with a full chapter of testimonies from happy customers. The author defends herself and the diet vigorously which surprised me -everyone I know who has followed it says it works miracles.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I had hoped
This was not what I was really looking for, as the title of this review may have suggested. I did learn a few things, and the diet itself looks interesting, though I have not tried it. But to me, the book was more self-promoting than educational. I was hoping for more facts, supported by statistics, and studies, rather it was if the author was trying to show her colleagues that her ideas were valid. They may be, I am not in any position to argue, but I was hoping for more information on the liver itself, and the possible disorders. I found only one paragraph with my condition discussed.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not good for people with digestive troubles!
Unless your diet is presently terrible, this book probably won't help you if you have candida, celiac disease, crohn's, ulcerative colitis, IBD, or IBS. Cabot limits meats and encourages non-gluten grains. Those of us with many kinds of digestive disorders cannot digest starches and disacharides (double sugars). I followed the Liver Cleansing Diet strictly for three weeks, but the inclusion of grains, sweet potatoes, corn, and soy made my symptoms worse than they had been before I started her diet. My bloating became so bad on this diet that I looked six months pregnant and getting worse. I eliminated soy and corn but to no avail. I then switched to Elaine Gottshall's Carbohydrate Specific Diet (Breaking the Vicious Cycle) and started feeling better within two days. My belly is board flat now, my skin looks better, my mood is good, and digestion feels so much better - after only one week! I wish I had found Gottshall years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book drove me to drink.
Very informative. This was the book I needed to give me the confidence to begin. I was curious about the subject and wanted to begin a program of diet and detoxicfication; however, I questioned the sanity of the venture.Steve Meyerowitz does a terrific job of dispelling any fears and he makes sense of the practice of fasting safely. A very complete study on the subject including a nice aray of receipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide for Everyone to Detox and Become Healthy
I found this book to be a great tool for all methods of detoxing concerning liquids. The author explains the nutrition and healing methods of different juices concisely and without the "bull" in most books.I read through this book in an afternoon - I literally could not put it down. The author covers water, fruit juice, vegetable juice, and liquid detoxing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Meyerwitz knows his stuff
Don't listen to the reviewers who gave this book low stars and complained that it was "too simple" or "cultish" or "anti-religious" or "too religious". They obviously didn't understand, apply, or perhaps even read through the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover the Manual Needed to Operate the Most Divine Gift in the World: Your Body!
Dr. Ben Lerner was the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Doctor and is the author of New York Times and Christian Bookseller's Association bestselling book, Body by God: The Owner's Manual for Maximized Living. He has been teaching the Body by God program in hundreds of organizations and churches all over the U.S. and Canada for the last decade. His book: Body by God: The Owner's Manual for Maximized Living, is an easy-to-follow and thorough book which reads like a reference guide to the body and is divided into five main parts:
4-0 out of 5 stars Realistically speaking, an idealistic book
The information is great! It all makes sense; but the realistic view is, who can really afford it? Ideally, yes, eat all of the food God intended you to, but look in the grocery stores and realize that you will be paying twice your normal grocery bill! The variety that God has provided is vast; however you realize how restrained it is when our menus rely so heavily on sauces, frostings and rich gravies; they are gone in this realm. You do feel better, but today's market makes it hard to live the way God wants you to. Another point well made is our need to do exercise - at least a little per day. It is a shame that in our society we are so overloaded with time constraints and responsibilities that it is hard to fit it all in. Overall, a very informative book, but will you stick with it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was excellent!! Mind, body, and spirit are covered in one book. This book gives very sensible and practical advice for anyone who wants to make a lifestyle change that they can live with."Dr. Ben" doesn't give false hope or false expectations.Anyway should be able to succeed if they choose to by using this book as a guide. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars QUESTION AFFECT BEHAVIOR
Iread it in two sittings and came away very imp;ressed. Adams showed how these principles worrk in both aprofessional setting add apersonal setting.I liked how she talked about cultivating the observer withhin. It did leave me with this question: why not discuss seeing likfe through the third--person perspective?Doesn't that practice autoatically make one more obser vant of oneself? Why were these seven tools left unnumbered?Isn't it wiseer to encourage readers to focus on developing one practice at a time?In reality, few people will adopt this system totally. Most will use only those techniiques thatapply to their particular situation and needs.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you want better results and solutions, learn how to ask better questions-- Adams shows you how in this excellent book
The concept is simple but incredibly powerful: Learn how to ask different questions and get different (improved) results. Dr. Adams walks readers through the steps to recognizing implicit questions and changing them. The concepts in this book apply to your life, career, and relationships, and I applaud Adams for writing this book and helping people get unstuck and make major changes.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the novice and expert alike
As a business leadership coach, I find that Marilee's practical insights become empowering if as the reader we practice and apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars book for everyone
We get more aware of our age at the time of retirement. Switching from a daily-work routine to a totally new idea of all-time-holidays is often not as pleasurable as we expected thirty or more years before. At that difficult time, it is very helpful to focus on the Four Pillars of Longevity as suggested by the authors of the book. The book provides some good medical background for these readers that like to understand why certain things are happening. Search the net for more FREE info

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe.I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option.I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background.

2-0 out of 5 stars Technically accurate, boring read
I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt
This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend Sensational Kids
Have you ever wanted to be a 'little mouse in the corner' to see what life is really like for children with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?You can do that through Lucy Miller's new book, Sensational Kids. This book is truly sensational.I've been recommending it to a lot of the parents and teachers of students I service.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not finished reading yet, and our lives have already changed!
My 3.5 year-old daughter was diagnosed with SPD (at that time it was called SID) when she was 8 months old, and has been in and out of OT ever since.Lately she has had some significant behavior problems, and we have tried multiple strategies that haven't worked.I'm a counselor and parent coach, and I was beginning to feel very inept because all the strategies that I teach my clients weren't working with my own child. When I started reading this book, I realized (duh!) that the behavior issues were caused by SPD, and, therefore, typical "behavior management" techniques don't work the same way.We have changed our framework in responding to her behavior, and my daughter has become the most cooperative and happy child overnight. Her teachers have even noticed a huge change from just giving her a big tight hug when she begins to "melt down."It's incredible! Our lives have been completely changed in just a few days.Thank you, Lucy, and we hope to see you soon at the STAR Center in Colorado!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Lucy Miller...Congratulations and Many Thanks!
I am thrilled with Sensational Kids:Hope and Help for Children with SPD!Dr. Lucy Miller has done an outstanding job of making a complex subject understandable in an easy-to-read format.Sensory Processing Disorder creates life challenges for many children and their families. The hope and help that Dr. Miller shares is powerful and offers the latest information - right at our fingertips! Her work with research is far-reaching and is making a positive difference for so many people! We are behind you Dr. Miller! 3-0 out of 5 stars Other than the actual "Ferberizing", great info
I am a mother of 6 month old twins who recently *both* were waking every 1 to 2 hours on some nights.I read this book after trying No-Cry Sleep Solution for a month with lots of improvment on everything *except* the number of night-wakings.The girls fell asleep faster, easier, and with less help - but kept waking up, dropping only about one night-waking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - REALLY helped
Our two older kids basically didn't fall asleep on their own for a long time, as well as woke up quite frequently at nights. We were big followers of Sears method. I think, our nervous system was quite drained as a result of bad and insufficient sleep.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the fourth night, it really seems to be working!
I think now, after trying the Ferber method, that a baby trying to fall asleep is just like a curious kitten that climbed up a tree and got herself stuck.I thought that my baby was always crying for us, but really she was crying for our help so she could fall back asleep. We were always rescuing our little kitten from that tall tree branch by picking her up out of the tree, without teaching her how to climb down on her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars LISTEN!!! for anyone who read the reviews about Dr. Young's lack of cred
This book is full of amazing health advice that, for the most part you already knew (you just didn't know exactly why it was healthy). Yes this diet, if followed word for word is difficult. WHO SAYS YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW ANYTHING WORD FOR WORD. Fundamentalist religious people don't even follow their book of choice word for word. Take what works for you and make it work for you. Super hydration, and green supplements are essential for our malnutritioned society. Eat more green vegetables. Eat higher water rich foods. Lower your intake of refined sugars (and fruit juice that averages 50 grams of sugar per serving!). Are these pieces of advice that need credential backing. Listen, If you asked ten ivy-league educated doctors their opinion on any given health issue, you would get ten different answer, maybe more depending on what drug company they are more closely linked to. BE LOGICAL. The majority of this book is irrefutable. The rest, as with any new theory you'll have to exercise faith. Which, by the way is what you're constantly doing with western medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars change your life
With the changes today in how we view our health, this book is great. The need to understand how we can control our own health is without so many drugs and is within these pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars a PH Miracle for life
I have been following this program for 2 1/2 years. I was dealing with numerous health challenges, some quite serious. I started this, quit drinking coffee, soda, eating meat and have never looked back. My extreme acidreflux was gone in a matter of days. I lost 28 pound in just under 3 months, my rosacea I have suffered with for 5+ years is completely gone. I have strangers tell me how beautiful my skin looks and I no longer have flare ups, I get facials, peels and go in the sun! My liver and digestive system are working again! This program may sound complicated, but it is not. It is the simplicity of it that makes it work. And puts all the responsibility in your hands for your health. I have fired my Doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sun Shone on Me
Get the "Expanded Edition" if possible. Alcoholic issues and mental health issues have been around for quite some time. Woititz Marries the two in a wonderful owner's manual for your (or someone close to yours soul) The person close to me was severely compromised by her (sober) parents ACoA issues and the other siblings' willingness to buy into the insanity. If you can find a book called "Grandchildren of Alcoholics" by Ann W. Smith, it is an excellent resourse for people who dont see alcoholism in their own families, but perhaps do see it in their grandparents. Would love to hear from others on the same journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational/Easy to Read
This book is excellant for ACOA's who wish to gain a better understanding of how their childhood has lasting effects on their life as an adult. It was my first book on the subject, and a great introduction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good first book on the subject
I've read a number of books on this subject. I wouldn't say this book was unhelpful but is too absolute in its information to be anything but alarming to anyone tentatively looking for answers. It's also not very well written. I would suggest reading either "Recovery, A Guide for Adult Children of Alcoholics" by Gravitz & Bowden (an excellent first book) along with "A Primer on Adult Children of Alcoholics" by Cermak for an added layer; and then, absolutely essential as a more in-depth book: "Children of Alcoholism - A Survivor's Manual" by Seixas & Youcha. 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I don't normally write reviews, but I feel really strongly about this one. I have "pure o" OCD which is harder to treat because there are no compulsions. Even so, this book (along with an amazing therapist) really saved me. Every night when I would lay there panicking about the terrible fears in my head, reading this book always helped me feel better (at the very least, it distracted me as is explained in the 4 steps). I wish I could give it more than 5 stars because it has such an amazingly positive impact on my mental health. After 5 years of living a much improved life by this system, I would highly recommend this to anyone with anxiety.
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for some types of OCD, but simplistic and judgmental
This book teaches OCD sufferers four steps to use to control their disorder, starting with "relabeling" their fears and urges as just a symptom of a disorder, rather than "something real." By reading the case studies, I figured out that "relabeling" means telling yourself, "My urge to perform my compulsive ritual is not a supernatural omen that something terrible will happen if I don't perform the ritual; it's just a symptom of OCD."The author never actually explains this, however.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent self-help book
I recommend this book to all of my patients who have symptoms of OCD.It is one of the most helpful books on the subject ever written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book:4th Edition 2005
Excellent book, covering all aspects of breast cancer. Dr. Love is considered the top authority on breast cancer. Her style of writing is interesting as well as informative. It is as if she is talking personally to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book
This book has been a lifesaver for me.I had breast cancer a year ago and if I had a question, I knew I could turn to the index and find the page that would have my answers. It put me at ease most of the time through a very scary experience.I have bought this book for a friend who just found out that she has breast cancer. She, too, have enjoyed the peace this book gives. It is very informative and interesting.I recommend this book to every lady who is told that she has, the scary words, "breast cancer".

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information
I bought this book for a relative who had breast cancer. This book helped her refine her questions about treatment as she met with physicians. It also gave her a much needed information about breast cancer. It was especially helpful in being very clear about what was known for sure about the disease and treatment and what was still unclear.I consider this book a must for anyone with breast cancer or with a family member or friend with breast cancer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for motivation but actually learned something
I bought a copy of Beyond Brawn from McRoberts and was hesitant to buy this book because of the writing style and extreme abbreviated routines promoted. This book recommends excercises I can accomplish and get results.
4-0 out of 5 stars Logical Extension of T-A-P
I've read and enjoyed several of Lou's other books, I like his style of writing and find his work entertaining and informative. This book, to me, is the logical successor to his popular Testosterone Advantage plan. The diet advice and planing is similar but updated, and the exercise plans follow a similar periodization scheme.Fat loss circuit, Hypertrophy, and low reps for strength. While there is a break in routine, I would not recommend this book to some one who has not worked out regularly for at least six months. But for some one looking to move from beginner to intermediate, or an intermediate looking for a change of pace, this would be an outstanding resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women please read as well!
I know this book doesn't really address women too much, but it is highly reccomended that we read it.If you are tired of reading books to gain muscle and strength that show the fitness models with 1 and 3lb weights, this is the book to get.

4-0 out of 5 stars Type O Food,
Was a revealing book.Had not known about the subject in detail previously.Interesting.Will implement suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am very happy to find out about this book
My doctor recently recommended that I get D'Adamo's book "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type" and this supplemental handbook. This supplemental handbook is very handy to take with me to the grocery store to help me shop for the right foods. The book is organized nicely into all the different food categories so that I can quickly find what I am looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars An In-Depth Review for those for who need convincing
Often times I find it hard to determine whether a health/fitness book is worth my time and money just by the synopsis and the few anecdotes you'll find on its Amazon page.Essentially, all health and fitness books claim to do the same thing. If you're anything like me and you'd like to hear what distinguishes a fitness book from other books in this crowded field of promises, please read on.If you have a short attention span and would like the Cliffs Notes version--buy this book!Let's continue...
5-0 out of 5 stars A life changing book!
Every once in a while a book comes along that is life changing. In my opinion, "The Metabolism Advantage" is one of those books. Dr. Berardi has successfully taken the best information fromhis"Precision Nutrition" program (www.precisionnutrition.com), his eBook "Gourmet Nutrition",and his book "Scrawny to Brawny", and put it all together in an easy to follow guide on how to speed up your metabolism; fantastic! "The Metabolism Advantage" is a complete nutrition, exercise, and supplement guide that equips anyone who is willing to apply Dr. Berardi's principles, with the tools to burn more calories, build muscle, and improve their health and well being. You own it to yourself to get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars John Berardi is the Advantage of The Metabolism Advantage
John Berardi's "The Metabolism Advantage" is a home run. I speak from first hand experience of John's teachings through his published articles, website, DVDS and now this brand new book.

5-0 out of 5 stars They Finally Get To Tell Their Stories...
What a fantastic book. I saw a short write up for it in a popular women's magazine, and though I never before had any interest in this subject, I was intrigued. I'm so glad I read it. I can't believe the things these poor scared young women had to go through. Most being pretty much abandoned by their families, and sent to 'homes for unwed mothers'...all because society of the 50's and 60's said it was unacceptable to be a pregnant, unmarried woman.
5-0 out of 5 stars I lived with the Aftermath of my Mother's History....
My mother was a "Girl who Went Away"...a fact that I didn't learn until I was in my mid-twenties.
5-0 out of 5 stars Such an important book which sheds light on the past as well as the present
Fessler has compiled a very moving collection of oral histories from mostly white, middle class women who were coerced to relinquish their babies as teenage unwed mothers. Many of their stories recount how little they knew about sex and pregnancy, and their very ignorance makes a strong indictment of the social norms of the times, when the sexual appetites of teenage girls were denied. The saddest stories are told by women who saw their pregnancies as the culmination of their love affairs and as the beginning of family life with their babies' fathers. To protect the reputation of their own families, parents of these girls turned to the adoption industry and the babies disappeared.Young mothers were told that they would forget about this early 'mistake' when they married and had more children. They were also told that they were not competent to be parents, and that other couples were more worthy. Many of the storytellers in this book carried that sense of unworthiness with them throughout their adulthood until, aided by reunion with their now adult surrendered children, some are able to heal.

This book gives a good insight to handling difficult people in any day to day situation.Reading this book is a good aid on how to learn techniques to handle difficult people, as well to give the reader aperspective to not take negative behaviour personally.Being aware of common traits of difficult people gives the reader an opportunity to practice what they read, in the workplace or their personal life. This book is good general knowledge and if nothing else will confirm some of your feelings you have probably had when in uncomfortable situations with difficult people. ... Read more
