5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
This is a historical book and I don't see any relation between its contents and the political comments of the previous reviewers. It refers to ancient Macedonia i.e. the northern greek kingdom and NOT the modern slavic coutry (ancient Paeonia) that uses the same name since 1945. So, there is absolutely NO reason to start a debate here. If you are interested in politics please go rate a book about modern diplomacy etc.5-0 out of 5 stars Macedonia is not Macedonia
The Macedonia of the ancient world is not the country known as "Macedonia" today. The people there have absolutely no connection with the people of the ancient land. They are of Turkish and Albanianblood. The closest one can get to the ancient Macedonia is the people fromthe area of Greece known as Macedonia. Very big difference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Greek Denial of the MACEDONIAN Name!
The most important thing to remember about the "Macedonian conflict" is that the Greek position has changed dramatically over the past decade. Official Greek government policy was that Macedonia did not exist. When Greece took over Aegean Macedonia in 1913, they killed, tortured and ethnically cleansed hundreds of thousands of Macedonians. They changed the names of people, villages, and landmarks from Macedonian to Greek in their attempts to eradicate the Macedonian name. Two things to remember:3-0 out of 5 stars For Serious Readers Only
An interesting presentation of the complex poly-ethnic history of Greek Macedonia. Nonetheless, the portrayal of the Greek state as operating a somewhat cultural genocide seems to prevail throughout most of the essays found in this book. Yet, the question of why the so-called"minority" Hellenic culture became the dominant force does notseem to be fully addressed. It seems that the admission of a dominant Greekpresence throughout Macedonian history is currently not the norm and out offlavor in the world of academia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Best Seller
This is a fantastic book and certain gives a valuable insite into Alexander the Great and Ancient Greece. You can tell from the level of detail within the book that the authors have tried to give the read as much information about Alexander and his life as one of the worlds greatest conquers.5-0 out of 5 stars Alexander -- A Soldier's Soldier
Alexander was, first and foremost, a soldier's soldier. No armchair general, he; he led from the front, and this during an age of warfare when being "in front" was hazardous in the extreme. He was, of course, a brilliant strategist and tactician, but he never forgot his soldiers who carried the fight to his enemy. When they were on campaign, he shared their lot -- food, quarters, hardships, and all -- entirely. And, for this, they gave him their undying loyalty.Discipline, courage, fortitude, vision -- these, and many more -- are the characteristics that made Alexander III truly great.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Footnotes...
More than you ever wanted to know about Alexander.Overall, an interesting and comprehensive read. The footnotes are exhausting, listing information about the geographic and meteorological changes that have taken place over the last two thousand years.(Makes you feel like an archaeologist.)His detailed notes on Alexander's military strategies was fascinating.Couldn't help but appreciate Cummings' dedication to the study of such a tremendous figure in ancient history.Take your time with this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Wordy Account of Alex
With all the recent interest in Alexander its not surprising that biographies new and old are popping up all over the place.Lewis Cummings 1940 bio of Alexander is certainly not one of the better known, nor is it the most distingished either.Though written in English his account is often less clear than Ulrich Wilken's German translated bio from a few years earlier.
3-0 out of 5 stars Alexander the Great by Cummings
I enjoyed this book.I found the text to be very readable. The main complaint I have for this book is that there are very few maps.If you are not thoroughly versed in the geography of Alexander, then you will either be confused or forced to have a world atlas at your side while you read.Cummings is supposed to have been a cartographer but he does not use many maps.Besides the lack of images or maps, the book is a fun book to read. If there were more maps and images, I would give the book a five. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A little out of date, but an unbiased analysis.
Although much has happened in the past 10 years since this book was written, Mr. Danforth provides great insight on the nationalistic ideologies of the 3 sides within the conflict (Greeks, Macedonians & neutral). His approach is 100% UN-BIASED which in many cases is rare for this debate. He quotes Greek, Macedonian & independant sources on the Macedonian question, & provides insight on the less-beleivable claims from ALL sides.I also enjoyed how Mr. Danforth remained true to his trade & tried to keep away from the ancient history aspect of Macedonia & analyzed the real issue behind this conflict - the last 150 - 200 years.
5-0 out of 5 stars greeks will be greeks, but Macedonians are Macedonian
Macedonians since the beginning of time have not been greek. They actually had a different spoken language, and yes some of them spoke greek since greek was the political and world language used, something of what english is today. The reason why Greece is being so scared and defensive is because we macedonians do have land claims in northern greece and because they don't want to lose that land since it is basically the bread basket for Greece and that they don't want to grant any of the macedonian minority living there any rights. It's funny how the greeks claim on a greek cultural website sponsored by the greek government on how the Romans were greek as well. That by far is the funniest thing I've ever heard.
4-0 out of 5 stars read the arguments, face the facts, consider the sources
A book on this topic will always trigger strong emotional responses from readers, both friendly and hostile. The responses of the Greek readers below are to be expected. It is sad to see people who seem to be intelligent and educated resort to the most ridiculous nationalist claims and propaganda available, the uses of which beg the question: is this almost-total reliance on emotion (rage, hatred, etc.) a substitute for arguments based on facts and objectivity?

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun and interesting read.
Michael Alvear has givien us another biography of Alexander, and it's a fun read.I don't agree with everything he wrote, but I do think that one can get a feel for the great king's more fun side while reading this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars History's most influential (...) man
I wish there were more books like "Alexander the Fabulous." Even though it's a mostly humorous account of the life of Alexander, it tells a lot more about what kind of person Alexander was than Oliver Stone's movie "Alexander." It's a fast, informative, fun book to read.My only complaint is that it was too short.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading!
Alexander the Fabulous is a tongue-in-cheek "history" of the great guy himself. The book reads like a gossip column, and is chocked full of "tell-alls", both real and imagined.Totally entertaining reading for those seeking a decidedly editorializedand glomourized "biography". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, easy read, interesting life
I never would have read this book if i didnt have to, but once again, im glad i did. This book is really no different than anything about Alexander, except its short, easy, and it covers the important points of his life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just learning history
History frequently expresses strong views of Alexander. Alexander was not the first cult figure but one of the greatest characters of history. I thought that history books were dates and footnotes and Greek passages. But it has come down to many more questions than answers. Why did more Greeks fight against Alexander as mercenaries than for him?
5-0 out of 5 stars Alexander the Accessible
Biographies of figures from the ancient world are often written, in the words of one of my old professors, "as if the author were being paid by the word."Lindsay Adam's new biography of Alexander the Great manages to avoid that trap. This book demonstrates that scholarship and readability are not contradictory. Adam's scholarly grounding is top-notch, but he does not clutter up his narrative with the usual wordy footnotes and passages in classical Greek. Both the professional historian and the history fan will find much to enjoy here. The author handles the complex and fascinating story of Alexander's conquests and their legacy with considerable grace and mastery. The professor looking for a text for undergraduates and the reader simply interested in a retelling of one of history's most compelling careers would both profit from this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Long Live The Hellenic Republic
The gov't of Skopie (FYROM) gives this clown (Mr Borza) money to write books about how Macedonians are not Greek. Sad, truly sad!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but misrepresented work of scholarship
I bought this book expecting a major critique on the so-called "Greek position" and found nothing of the sort. Grossly misrepresented on both the internet and in other publications, Borza has often been presented as a staunch advocate for a position in the "Macedonian Question". The truth is virtually the opposite! Borza, as with all objective historians, takes no position on this topic other than providing an overview of recent historiography of the region, a topic to which some mention of the practice of nationalist history is usually indispensable.
