Editorial Review

En route to Lake Tahoe for a much anticipated vacation, the Carver family is arrested for blowing out all four tires on their camper. Collie Entragian is the arresting officer, the self-made sheriff of a town called Desperation, Nevada, and the quintessential bad cop. Unbeknownst to the Carvers, Entragian regularly sniffs out passerbys on this stretch of road, and in fact has done in nearly every resident of his hometown. He can also change form and summon the help of creepy creatures, including scorpions, snakes and spiders. Though the family seems doomed, an unlikely hero emerges --11-year-old David Carver--who finds his own way to get around the Law.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful read!
The story is set in a once thriving copper mining town called Desperation, only now it appears to be eerily deserted.
4-0 out of 5 stars Yes Stephen King really IS that good
I didn't expect to like this, but it turned out to be a treasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars A gripping book, vintage King.
Desperation is my favourite "stand alone" King novel to date. King's "Dark Tower" books are my favourite King books but Desperation is up there high on the list! It's a superior work to it's sister book "The Regulators" (which I personally enjoyed) written under the name of Richard Bachman and the writing and storytelling skills that king has pleanty of are on full display. It's a big novel, worth your time and very enjoyable. ... Read more

Since his first novel was published in 1974, Stephen King has stretched the boundaries of the written word, not only bringing horror to new heights, but trying his hand at nearly every possible genre, including children's books, graphic novels, serial novels, literary fiction, nonfiction, westerns, fantasy, and even e-books (remember The Plant?). 3-0 out of 5 stars Revenge Romany Style
After a successful Connecticut lawyer runs over and kills an elderly gypsy woman on a public road (while in the midst of being illicitly pleasured by his wife) he finds himself cursed by the dead woman's kin, who impose their punishment on him via uttering a single word, "Thinner..." The lawyer, an obese, cocky man, finds himself wasting away, dropping weight so rapidly day by day that his health is endangered. The lawyer's family and friends are aghast at his hideous transformation, which comes on him in the matter of a few short weeks, but nothing the man or even his doctors do arrests his radical weight loss. Facing death from a condition similar to anorexia, the lawyer fights back against those who have cursed him and enlists the aid of a thrill-loving gangster he once successfully defended against racketeering charges. With time running out and the lawyer's health spinning downward as fast as his weight itself, there comes a deadly confrontation between the migratory gypsy clan and the modern people who oppose them. Thinner was the longest and most success of the Bachman books King anonymously released at a point in his career just before he became the pop-culture icon he went on to be. It is a fast-moving story without clear delineations between good and evil, but its cast does run to the shallow side, unlike many of Stephen King's other novels and stories, which feature characters who all-but radiate "life". Worth reading for a fan or by someone who wants a nice light tale, but not a classic or in the top half of King's works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes It's About Losing Weight - No It's Not A Diet Book!
FUNNY! One of Stephen King's best books and it was written by somebody else. In case you didn't know Thinner was originally released under the nom de plume Richard Bachman. It seems King had an identity crisis. Apparently transfixed by his newfound fame and notoriety, he began to wonder (not without reason) if every book, good or bad (and there were some bad ones) were best sellers because they were released under the Stephen King name. Well Thinner was a good'un and I'm going to tell you about it.
5-0 out of 5 stars THINNER
This is another good king book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Story
I thought this was a good book. One of the many that keeps you turning the page due to suspense. Ralph Roberts had no clue that his Insomnia would lead him to heroism and he would finally get to "sleep". Stephen King's one of a kind creativity definitely comes to play here. I would recommend this book to anyone. I think anyone would enjoy the suprise ending in finding out about the "promise".

1-0 out of 5 stars Stephen King Was My Teen Years
I'd read most of King's stuff during the uh decade ofmy UTe.Salem'sLot and Pet Cemetery beingthe hook on the line and The Stand, Shining, Christineand IT reeling me in.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Isa Good Cure For Insomnia!
Once again in King's books just like "The Green Mile" we have the senior citizen Ralph Roberts who is recently widowed and he starts suffering from insomnia. Then he starts seeing crazy little guys and people with balloons attached to their heads!I would start seeing things too if I went without sleep for a few nights. I was hoping that a clown named Pennywise with a stack of balloons would appear since this book is set in Derry Maine but no such luck. Ithink somebody should buy King an Atlas because he seems to be unaware of any other locationsexcept Maine which does get rather tiresome after awhile. There area couple of subplots about a wife beater and abortion in this book but I find it to be a very good subsitute for Seconal. I give this book 5 stars because it seems King is still trying to "live up" to the promising writer that he once was 20 years ago. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak
After a friend highly recommended the Dark Tower series to me, I trudged through The Gunslinger promising myself to keep my expectations low in accordance with the author's plea to look beyond the first book.Unfortunately, I found The Drawing of the Three to be one of the weakest stories I've ever read.I think the best description has already been stated elsewhere in these reviews...dull.
5-0 out of 5 stars The company grows, and you also understand more now...
"Drawing of the three" has a direct connecion to "The Gunslinger", the book right before this one in the "Dark Tower" - series. One thing I must definitely say what's a progres opposite to the one before: I had much less problems to follow the story!!! The story is simple, though: On his way along the Western Beach Roland enters our world through three different doors into hree different time zones, and so he's able to make two people join him on his trip, the 3rd door has some kind of task for him...
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic King
This second part of the Dark Tower series is essentially a set-up book. This is where Roland gathers an unsuspecting group of people that will help him on his quest for the Dark Tower. The events of this novel are so well written and unpredictable that it will keep you turning pages. One gets the feeling at the end of book that the stage is now set, and the real fun is ready to begin in part III.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just gave me nightmares
I finished the audio book earlier this week.In typical Stephen King fashion, he draws you along the story, twisting several plots into it.Surprisingly, it was not the main focus of the story that gave me chills, but the last 5 minutes when certain revelations are made, or at least hinted at.
5-0 out of 5 stars A CHILLING READING
Reader Frank Muller delivers this tale with aplomb.Taken from King's superb story collection, "Different Seasons," the action takes place in a tony Big Apple men's club where there are no membership dues.Membership rises and falls with the telling of tales.4-0 out of 5 stars A good book

5-0 out of 5 stars More Layers to the Rose that is Roland
Wizard and Glass begins with the ka-tet out-stupiding Blaine and ending up in some kind of alternate Topeka, Kansas where a plague has pretty much obliterated the entire human population. They make their way down the freeway on a path to the Emerald City.Yes, that Emerald City.
2-0 out of 5 stars Talking computers to death is what Kirk does
This book went right off tangent, after the brilliant writing that started the series. The side-story is pretty bland, doesn't provide insight so much as it rewrites the backstory, and the overall plot isn't expanded, it sounds like he mostly ran out of ideas and started to drag his other books into the story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sucha good backstory I didn't want to go back to the main plot
Let me start by saying that the only Stephen King books I have read are the first four Dark Tower books, so am not biased for or against his work. I just took this book for what it was, a great story. It brings the first three books together. This book was so good, in fact, that I now want to read more about Cuthbert, Alain, and Roland's young Gunslingers' adventures than the actual "everyone's dead" tower quest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plain everyday wanting to write
I'm your plain everyday wanting to be writer. I found, 'On Writing' to be one of the best books I've read. Mr. King writes of his childhood and life in the first part of this book, then in the second half gives advice on how to write, which I have highlighted and marked up something awful. I was one of those teenagers he talks about in his book, that failed English in high school, and thought I was dumb, because of it. I did write as a child, only for myself, not like Mr. King who wrote for Dave's Rag. I loved the parts that spoke of his and his brothers dreams, escapades, or just having fun growing up. It brought back memories of me and my brother. I've read a few books by King, but I find I loved this one the most. I'm one of the older crowd, five years older then Mr. King. I wish he would write more books on plain everyday life, as he lived with his brother and mother, for me and others out there who don't want to read murder, mystery, etc. I'm not saying I didn't like Misery, because I did. I guess now in my elder years I'm just looking for a little less anxiety. I guess I'm what you call "old" and want to think of the world as a loving place and nothing more. I know I'm just dreaming about loving your neighbor, but I "do" believe that people are out there to love one another. I tried my hand at self publishing a book named, "Fears Flutterby", maybe if Mr. King reads this he can give me some tips.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Much of a Writer's Manual as a Riveting Tale Told By a Master Story Teller
I am not sure how I should classify ON WRITING. It is part memoir, part guide or manual, and part autobiography. As a reader, this book entertained me. As a writer, this book empowered me.
5-0 out of 5 stars On Writing, by Stephen King
So you've finally come to it: you wake up in the morning, and decide to heck with this nine to five job, bills, and a squinty-eyed boss that smells like old tobacco - you want something better out of life. You've decided to do what you always wanted to do; become a writer, and create worlds and whole universes for a living.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh ho, the sweet poison!
I've read Belladonna several times.I love getting lost in the descriptive writing.Karen Moline is wonderful with adjectives... she gives you the tools to concoct some brilliant mental pictures to go along with the story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Novel
Isabella Ariel Nickerson is kidnapped and auctioned for 1 million pounds in 1930s England. She finds herself the unwilling play thing of a club of men who get their kicks out of forcing sexual tortures on women. Isabella is actually purchased by a man she knows only as "His Lordship", a man she will dedicate the rest of her life to finding and destroying once she escapes her hell.3-0 out of 5 stars 'Bella ' 'Donna
I really had to struggle with a rating for this one, the first three quarters are just so deliciously trashy and then everything suddenly falls apart. The problem is the setup is so motivating and the story so much fun to read you can't help but be let down by the cop out of an ending.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dropped call....
As a huge Stephen King fan I really looked forward to reading this book but was quickly disappointed. There's no real character development.I would like to know who Tom was before the pulse or what Alice was like before the pulse. It started off very strong but towards the middle it started to lag and then eventually stopped.I didn't feel like I was reading a true Stephen King book at all. This felt like a third rate 'The Stand' with cell phones instead of a flu virus. 'The Stand' was a much better read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, Wrong Number
What happens if one day everyone within hearing range of a cell phone were to suddenly go insane? What if that insanity caused those afflicted to attack everyone within sight?Stephen King asks these questions in this book.Unfortunately, our protagonists never find why and King makes me wish that he had picked the protagonists that located the source of the pulse.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not one of Stephen King's best
The idea behind this book is a good one, like many of King's book: what if at one point in time, every person in the world who talks on or listens to a cellular phone receives some "signal" or "pulse" that acts like a "reset" button on a computer, erases his or her personality and leaves only primal madness, aggressiveness and eventually a sense of flocking with others of their kind? And what if a few people who were smart or lucky enough not to receive that "pulse" and have been able to figure out that the cell phones are the cause, get together and set off on a journey towards possible sanity?

4-0 out of 5 stars What an adventure!
I liked this book a lot because it was a real adventure and it was very exciting. I kept reading because I kept asking myself what would happen next. It deffinately kept me interested until the end...except when it got to the end I was quite disapointed. The ending just left me hanging. Is there a sequel to this book? I wish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Koontz entertaining yarn.
I happened to read Seize The night first. I was still pulled in to this first book in the series. The charcaters are very likable and the book left me wanting to know even more about them. Dean Koontz is one of the best writers of our time.

4-0 out of 5 stars love it
I love reading amazon reviews and it's astonishing how especially in Koontz' case reviews seem to vary between 5 and 1 star reviews all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
A Night in Terror Tower is an amazing little book. With only 129 pages it is more than able to draw in a reader and fuel the imagination long after completion. The story is about two young children in London. They take a tour to the Terror Tower in London. The tour turns sour when they lose their guide and are hunted by the mysterious man in the black cape. The children are suffering from memory loss and nothing seems to be going their way! When the man in the black cape catches them the story takes a major twist, the kids are now in the past! This story is excellent for younger readers and will keep them turning pages for hours.I would recommend this book for anyone ages 8-12, but even adults could enjoy this as a quick night read! The graphic settings and bone chilling details to R. L. Stines books really keep you involved. The story is filled with humor, horror, drama, and action that won't let you sit anywhere but the edge of your seat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo, King.
Nearly a year after reading this epic series, I decided to come on to Amazon to see how it was rated among fellow junkies. I was not at all surprised to see that the reactions to this book, not unlike most books on Amazon, spanned quite broadly across the 5-star spectrum. The biggest difference I noticed between this and other books is that regardless of what the viewpoint of the reviewer was, the description behind it was often lengthy and passionate. Most of the negative reviews are negative because King left the reader feeling betrayed, empty and hurt -- and some people can't deal with that kind of emotional burden. The beauty of his "magnum opus" is that he achieved exactly what he intended to. Out of the near 600 reviews this novel has received, very few of them are one-liner reviews shooting the book down without a second thought. Call me crazy, but I think the cascade of emotional response from his readers speaks for itself with regards to the integrity and brilliance of this series and even this ending.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Dark Tower
The Dark Tower is the 7th book in the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. It is about a Man, Roland, and his quest for the Dark Tower. He picks up many companions on the way and has a huge adventure through out the books; I thought this was a great finish to a great series.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Series ever written with the perfect ending.
Book seven in the series "The Dark Tower" finally brings the much-awaited ending to a story that is impossible to put down. When I began reading this series, I became entrenched in the story, its characters and most importantly how it made me feel about life, and the world we live in.For those people who criticize the ending, I suppose it isn't for everyone, but you have to admit you didn't see it coming, and that my friends is what a true storyteller is able to do.After you finish the story, continue into the author's note to understand what I mean.As for the author, well he is brilliant as usual. The visualization you, as a reader, are able to create in your mind is unbelievable. The different worlds, the landscape, the characters, the language, and of course the story.Stephen Kings put it best when he asked everyone reading the books "I hope you are reading this for the story and not the ending."Anyone can write an ending, but to tell a truly wonderful story is impossible for most.I have recommended this series to many, and I not know of one who has disliked it.To read this sort of story, you have to keep an open mind, let your fantasies run wild and for GAN'S SAKE put down the remote, grab a glass of scotch and immerse yourself into the story. You will not be disappointed, this I promise. The scariest thing about this series, and about the ending, is that you can actually picture it happening, not just to the character but also to yourself. While my review isn't to break down the book, you can do that for yourself. It is more to entice you into reading it, but not for the ending (though incredible), but for the story and the journey.ENJOY! ... This review refers mostly to the unabridged cassette version.4-0 out of 5 stars Sun Dog
I absolutely loved this book! The Sun Dog had me on the edge of my seat, biting my fingernails and scared to pick up an instamatic camera ever again! It was one of King's best.At the end of the book, however, there's a mention of a sequel - and I've been waiting for that for some time - I hope it happens....

4-0 out of 5 stars Mr. King "blurs the line" and suspends disbelief so smoothly
"Chilling" is the best description for this trip into the imagination of Stephen King and his characters. You hate 'em, you love 'em and you feel the beads of sweat on their foreheads.... This was a grimyread, and I was amazed at my discomfort and growing anxiety as the plotdeveloped and then exploded... What a trip!!! Highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book
My preschool class absolutely loves this book.Whenever I read it, I read it in the voice of the little old lady. The 2nd time I read the book, my students started to say some parts of the story, like "the head when nod nod".They want me to read this book every day to them.I defnitely recommend this book to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excelent novel.
I'm only able to listen to audiobooks because not many are produced in braille, and those that are are so ridiculously high in price range. So when I saw the Talisman on audio on Amazon, I knew I had to read it.Frank Muller narrating the book was also another reason why I snapped it up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy, Horror, Childhood dreams and more...
This is a plot to flip for (read the book!)!Who else but the two masters of the dark side could team up to create such an incredibly scary, tearjerking, suspense filled dream of a book but King and Straub! One of my ALL TIME favorite reads!
4-0 out of 5 stars talisman
I liked this book.I like all of Kings books, some better than others and some I will read over and over and over. This one is the Prequel to black house...I like this one better but they are both good and I would read them together if you haven't read either of them... ... Read more

Editorial Review

The ornate, casket-like packaging and neogothic graphic design of this immortal trilogy is eerily enticing on its own. But just lift the lid, slide the first tape from its ghostly sleeve, and you'll soon embrace the hypnotic realm of the undead.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Vampire Chronicles 1-3
I would have preferred to have been able to buy these audio books on cd; however, they were unavailable.Since I had read them all so long ago, it was time to delve back into them. Buyingaudio books to bring on vacation, was the perfect idea!(I didn't have to worry about getting any suntan lotion on the pages!)

5-0 out of 5 stars coffin box set

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
Anne Rice is the best modern writer on vampires.I have read them all and she rocks. The coolest scenarios and she reads like an intelligent airport paperback book writer. Her writing goes down easy like a comic book.I have written a book on vampires too if you are interested. It's called Seamus and Emer. It's available on Amazon so take a look.Good Luck!Bye Bye! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good story gets better
I agree that the story is told better in the second book.In the first book, I liked the idea, but thought the execution just never got pulled off.The idea of animals being made smarter, humans being made more animalistic and what effects that would have on our world are fascinating. But the first book had long boring stretches for me that made it hard to read and push through.
2-0 out of 5 stars Three Points About this Book
After reading this book, I would like to make three points about it:
5-0 out of 5 stars Very creepy
as a sequel to fear nothing, this book is equally good. christopher snow is a very likeable character, so i'm hoping the talk of a trilogy is true. meanwhile, this is another one of those koontz novels that leaves the reader feeling a bit paranoid, which indicates to me that koontz has masterfully crafted his work. always the researcher, koontz successfully incorporated the military into this work without getting the reader bogged down in lingo. great read. just when you think things are okay, people are trustworthy, the situation is safe, you find out that you are wrong! very interesting look at possibilities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love that voice!
Just to expose my bias, let me just say that Gerain Wyn Davies could read a cookbook or the instruction manual to a refrigerator and I would buy it just to listen to his voice! This is an audio book filled with classic horror stories vocalized by a man trained in classic theatre. What more can you ask for?The stories come to life and Mr. Wyn Davies manages to make the stories suspenseful and haunting.I have only purchased 2 audio books and they were both Wyn Davies short story collections. If you like classic horror (Poe, etc.) and you love a beautiful voice, this is the audio book for you! ...
