Accessible and important development in liberal thought
A Theory of Justice is surprisingly accessible, even to those of us with out extensive training in philosophy.Rawls briefly examines two of the most influential Western liberal philosophers (Locke and Mill), and then proceeds to construct his own Theory which builds on Locke and Mill while solving for some of the deficiences in each.
The Impossible Attempt of Reconciling the Ideal with the Realistic
The amount of praise given to this work does not surprise me given that there is a widespread, yet subtle, socialist movement in America as well as in Europe.Despite this, the book is a failed attempt at reconciling the ideal with reality.Rawls commits one of the many age-old flaws of collectivism, attempting to force morality on immoral beings. Rawls' entire work is fundamentally flawed in that the hypothetical situation from which the entire theory relies, selectively allows certain knowledge, assumptions, etc. while conveniently eliminating others.For instance, empirical evidence that shows capitalism outperforms other economic systems cannot be known in the original position.This is profound when one considers that we live in a hostile world that requires nations to invest in security of which economic power is imperative.Thus, capitalism may be a necessary injustice in order to safeguard liberal democracy.If we compare the human condition prior to capitalism, one can see that perhaps a collectivist system that may contribute to capitalism's downfall is immoral, if it leads us back in this direction.Consequentalism perhaps?Despite this, the people in the original position cannot have this knowledge.Therefore, information that is direly relevant to the construction of a social system in a hostile world cannot be used in determining its structure.Somehow though, the people do understand the important of the right to vote, equality, etc. This is absurd and impractical.Rationale beings need to analyze as much information as is available and pertinent to any decisions they make.Rawls continuously attempts to explain his "tweaks" as rationale but it is obvious that they are all implemented in order to discount human nature and proceed in theoretical terms.On a side note, Rawls' first principle calls for the right to vote, what would his state do if citizens began to vote for a more capitalistic system that defied his "justice"?Iron fist?Nevertheless, it is quite obvious what Rawls is attempting here.In a hypothetical situation where we all have to fear being born without intelligence, strength, status etc. we will take the safe route and ensure ourselves the highest index of goods.This may be true, or it may not (human nature seems to embrace risk taking) however this situation is irrelevant because of its exclusion of relevant information.Hobbes for instance accepted human nature and the potential for a wide array of circumstances in his hypothetical Natural Condition.While Rawls may have some strong arguments in declaring that his two principles are the epitome absolute justice, this does not mean they are practical in a hostile world.Essentially, what Rawls is saying is that none of us deserved to be born intelligent, responsible, hard working, but that we were simply lucky in the natural lottery.Because of this arbitrary distribution, he believes that we all must compensate for those unfortunate souls that were born unintelligent, lazy, and perhaps even immoral!I'd admonish Rawls not to attempt applying his insane reasoning to the criminal justice system (Poor, unfortunate murderer).If Rawls believes that the laziest, dumbest, and most immoral person still deserves a living wage despite not working, he has contradicted himself in that this justifies slavery, forcing individuals to work for other individuals without compensation.This simply cannot be justice as "fairness".Nevertheless, I'd recommend it to all free market advocates simply to strengthen their positions.As a warning however, be prepared for a work that lacks brevity, organization, coherence, and most importantly, reality.

Dissapointing but with a few gems
I felt that he was trying to gain sympathy for his situation unlike the frankness of Angelas Ashes. I was dissapointed with this sequal. He was brave to tell the truth of his situation, however he must have cringed upon reflection of his early life. He does use humor throughout the book and that makes it more bearable to read. I felt like slapping him rather than giving him a hug at the end of this second book. He does tell the truth, to his credit, and doesn't candy coat anything, a continuation of the first book in the context of style. Important for anyone negotiating a commercial lease
Very good book.Helpful insight into the various issues surrounding commercial leases, and helps put together the pieces of the puzzle.It has been a real asset in the last two leases I have negotiated.

Excellent and nuanced discussion of leasing issues
I negotiate retail and office leases as part of my law practice. This book is an excellent guide to the points that need to be considered when negotiating a lease. It will help attorneys as well as business people and brokers. The author does a good job in explaining, often in detail, the business reasons behind the different positions that the landlord and the tenant take. Understanding those reasons puts you in a much better position to create satisfactory compromises. Also, this book doesn't just address the major points - I was surprised to see how many subtle points the author addressed. Overall, an excellent book and a great value at this price.

Reasonably Useful
I'll agree that this book is a little random, but I've made it through the whole thing over numerous train commutes and found it useful in discussing how certain specific lease provisions can translate into a variety of outcomes in the real world of LL/tenant relations.

Turvey demystifies criminal profiling
This book by Mr. Turvey offers a lucid and comprehensive overview of criminal profiling. Contrary to popular belief, criminal profiling is not science per se but rather a collection of subjective views offered by renowned criminal profilers. Most of these views have not been scientifically corroborated and according to Turvey there is no concensus amongst criminal profilers on this subject. Turvey holds that much more scientific research is required in order to substantiate many claims. What separates Turvey's book from most books on this subject is his refusal to make sensationalistic assertions. Every major theory is explained clearly and both its strengths and flaws are accounted for. Inductive and deductive methods are reviewed extensively and meticulously and it becomes readily apparent to the reader that criminal profiling has been only somewhat beneficial in a few cases. In most cases, criminal profilers have failed to offer an accurate profile of the perpetrator, small wonder given the extreme complexity of human nature.
Waste of Money
Don't waste your money on this book.As a professor of Criminology, I found Mr. Turvey's approach to be quite juvenile in it's theories.Mr. Tuvey's analysis often contradicts itself in following chapters.I advise my students that there are far better books about criminal profiling on the market.

Seminal Text in Crime Scene Behavior Analysis
Mr. Turvey has done an outstanding job in assembling and presenting critical, fundamental concepts on behavioral analysis of crimes and criminals based upon what the physical evidence describes. The introduction by John Thornton, PhD, one of the worlds leading forensic scientists and authors is an endorsement that says it all. Each human act is unique in the context of the mindset of the offender and his behavior at the time of the crime. This book describes the effective analyis and interpretation based upon the uniqueness of each crime scene evidence and event, keeping the investigator on track. This book should be required reading for all "introduction to criminal investigation" classes for both law enforcement and the defense bar. The book demonstrates the importance of merging and considering all aspects of victimology, forensic science, psychology and good old fashioned investigative work. Mr. Turvey does an excellent job of promoting the deductive, individualized analysis of a crime. Although it is tempting to look at the "statistical" data of similar scenes, the inductive process can be distracting and misleading. Yes, he takes a few jabs at some of FBI's legends, however it is more likely that he attacks the process and not the individual. For those of us who have worked with the Feds and enjoyed their friendship, it does evoke a chuckle or two... ... Read more

Tad Crawford Does It Again
Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography.I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.

An Invaluable Resource
I didn't originally buy this book to "read".I bought it for the invaluable resources inside - the wealth of forms that any photographer needs to protect their work and their business.What makes this book so enticing is you don't have to photocopy, or redesign any of the forms since they're all included on a CD that comes with the book.That being said, I should mention that I was quite surprised at the thorough explanation for each form, and the situations where each form might be needed contained in the book.A person could undoubtedly pay hundreds (probably thousands) in legal fees assembling the information in this book on their own.This book is a photographer's "legal-resource-in-a-book".I highly recommend it. ... How-to reference

Could have been better, I think
Well, the fact that I'm writing a review about this book, while it's sitting open on my desk next to my computer, open and not being read, might be some evidence of how I'm enjoying this book. This book just goes on and on in complex an unclear language about a subject which shouldn't be so difficult. This book is not clear or easy to understand at all. Every sentence is awkward and followed by a footnote, and the masses of footnotes together take up half of EACH page (!), making this work look like a research project for a PhD publication. I have the casebook in this series, and sometimes it seems reading the cases alone will bring more clarity. And it turns to be true! This book might be good if you're advanted-contracts and want to know every little detail, or as an advanced reference later on, to look something up like in an encyclopedia. Some concepts, which should be pretty clear just get too in-depth coverage in this book. It's too complex for a first-year student. Sometimes it starts describing the different views out there, and then there's a jumble in your head as to what the law really is. I wish the author used his own knowledge and fluid language more than footnoted ideas from other authors.

Best used as a doorstop.
This book tells you nothing that the U.C.C., Restatement 2nd, and a basic cases and examples book (Farnsworth, for instance) doesn't already tell you.This hornbook, however, is much denser and dryer than these other texts.Surely there must be better study texts out there than this for the first-year Contracts student.

Horrible!!
This book is just plain bad.Writer has very hard time getting anything across clearly..way to wordy for the simple messages that he is trying to get across.Avoid if at all possible unless you like to sleep!! or if you have to read it for a test...even then not worth it!!

Long winded.
The only reason anyone would read this book is because it was listed as required reading for a promotional exam. Mr Whisenand is out of his mind and should limit his writing to something he has firsthand experience in. Read this book only if you are having insomnia.

Tiresome, windy, unrealistic, list happy
This guy is out of his mind.A very frustrating read which makes U.S Army technical manuals seem fascinating.Mr. Whisenand is an obvious scholar, but I fear his "book of lists" does not translate all that well to actual human beings.In addition, I found the section on "community oriented policing" especially overblown.He fails to consider the prosecutorial implications of stating that "long and detailed reports are turnoffs to many people" (page 331, paragraph 1), they're turnoffs to defense attornies too!Read more

Mother Earth to the Expert Witness
I'm farily judicious relative to giving a product 5 stars when providing reviews however, HOW TO EXCEL DURING DEPOSITIONS (HTEDD), is incredibly deserving. While this is certainly a niche book and one very few in the Amazon world will read, for those few who are professionals, whether in the litigation consulting arena or not, this text provides an over-the-top treatise on the right and wrong ways of providing testimony under deposition. Further, regardless desire, chances are that many professionals will be called upon to give a deposition at some point in their professional careers given the litigous society in which we live. Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. WORKING FOR YOURSELF: LAW & TAXES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS & CONSULTANTS covers everything from setting appropriate fees and understanding how and when taxes are paid to limiting liability and getting paid. Record-keeping processes are simplified with sample logs and entry advice, chapters on how the IRS defines an independent contractor versus a paid employee are essential keys to keeping independent status, and advice on pricing and insurance offer key strategy-oriented tips and approaches. A 'must' for any who would work independently.
Great straghtforward information and advice
I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting.The book is helpful and worth the price.It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc.He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on.Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically. ... Insightful, biased, brilliant, shrill - Posner!
Richard Posner is perhaps best known for his work on the economic analysis of law (his text by that name is the standard for the discipline). His work on catastrophic risk, which forms the basis for his analysis in _Not a Suicide Pact_, draws heavily on the reasoning used in his work in the area of "law and economics."
Read the book BEFORE you review it
This is a terrific book that all open minded people would find of interest. As is the case so often,reviewers are being allowed to place reviews without ever reading the book, as in the previous reviewers case (Upshur).Posner examines the delicate balance between personal freedom and collective security and the fine line between them that is constantly shifting due to historical circumstance. After reading this book,no matter what position you choose to take, you will have a greater understanding of the issues involved, and you will be able to make a more informed decision.

Absolutely required reading for trial lawyers
If you are a trial lawyer and don't have this book yet, you are missing out.David Ball is incredibly gifted in conveying his message as briefly and directly as possible.The first edition of Damages changed the way I prepared and handled cases.The second edition is even better.Highly suggested reading.

A must read
I have waited months in anticipation of David Ball's new book on damages.His first edition revolutionized how cases should be tried. It was a must read for all attorneys in my office.
