5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Read for anyone interested in law's role in the pursuit of justice
This is by far the best book on the subject primarily because of the careful attention paid to presenting a broad variety of perspectives on and strategies for achieving justice. Taken as whole this book is a great historical road map of the various ways lawyers have participated in bettering the material conditions of the lives of the underrepresented and marginalized. This is the perfect book for anyone who is interested in the law and social change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of essays for teaching
This volume is a welcome addition to the teaching materials on legal ethics. It pulls together a diverse collection of important writing on the subject of lawyers and social justice. It includes both older "classics" and newer emerging voices and perspectives. And it includes writing from a range of academic perspectives--legal history, moral philosophy, critical theory, and clinical scholarship--that are rarely pulled together in one place.Although each selection is severely edited, they are packaged and juxtaposed in ways that distill the different perspectives represented by each author. As a result, the collection presents the deeper questions that legal ethicists are asking to the reader in a way that makes the questions both accessible and challenging. The introductory material and discussion questions that frame each section are thoughtful and provocative. As someone who teaches law students in both legal ethics classes and in hands-on clinical courses, I am very pleased to see this book and can't wait to use it, because I think it will provide a perfect vehicle for helping my students think about their professional roles and responsibilities as lawyers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for lawyers
I am not a lawyer and I don't much like lawyers, but I picked this book up in my local book store and I was amazed. It actually discusses the ways in which some lawyers have understood their work as a way of furthering social justice.I loved the parts about how lawyers helped the NAACP achieve civil rights for African-Americans, and also the parts about how lawyers have developed theories that connect lawyering with civil rights, feminism, critical race theory and poverty rights. If more lawyers thought this way, we'd have a much more just society. The introduction says the book is intended in part for use in law school in lawyers' ethics classes, and I hope it is used for this. But it is fascinating reading for nonlawyers interested in law and social justice too. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
I had a hard time getting through this book.It is mostly boring and repetitive. The comments and anecdotes by Dennnis Smith are often arrogant and self-serving.I am a retired firefighter from Los Angeles County FD and very much enjoy reading about firefighter experiences and talking with firefighters from other areas and other countries.I have great admiration for volunteers who give to their community with personal sacrifice and often great risk.I am greatly bothered by firefighters, especially professionals, who toot their own horn and think of themselves as great heroes. This book is just not very interesting at best, and at worst is somewhat offensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars All About Firefighters
Do you like the thrill of going into a burning building? The book "Firefighters: Their Lives in Their Own Words", is written by Dennis Smith. Firefighting is not an easy thing to do. This book tells you what they do and how they live. 2-0 out of 5 stars Just Could Not Get Into This Book
I'm not saying this book is bad, but I just could not get into this book.I thought I'd really enjoy it, but it's all one and two page anecdotes.A lot of them are very repetitive of the other ones.I think if they stuck to only a dozen or so in depth, it would have been more interesting and enjoyable, at least for me that is.But this is just my opinion, the other reviewers all seemed to enjoy it.If you think this book may appeal to you, go ahead and try it.Don't go by my opinion, after all it is only my humble opinion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the source book for psychological ethics
i attended a forensic psychology ethics workshop conducted by dr. bersoff, which propelled me to reading his book that had gathered dust on my shelf this past year.the book was edited by bersoff, a former board member and legal counsel of the APA.chapter authors read like a who's who in the field.the content is well-organized.the book is quite readable.they re-print and discuss the APA ethics code, guidelines, ethical issues and laws fairly extensively.i'd love to see applied research on ethical decision making.outstanding resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, thought-provoking book
i bought this book for a graduate school class in ethics for psychologists and found it to be extremely thought-provoking and informative. the ethical guidelines are discussed in an easy-to-understand format, and numerous case examples are provided that really make you think about where you stand on various issues facing mental health practitioners. highly recommended reading--excellent for someone just starting in the field and a great refresher for those who have been practicing for awhile. ... Editorial Review

We have all heard the derogatory jokes comparing lawyers to slimy, venomous invertebrates. And we have laughed. On the scale of public contempt, the legal profession ranks somewhere between tabloid journalists and telemarketers. What should be a good and honorable vocation is collectively vilified as devious and mercenary. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars influential exploration of nuances of adversary theorem
Intended for popular consumption, Zitrin & Langford provide a riveting, accessible exploration of the ethical ambiguities posed by the adversary theorem in legal practice.
5-0 out of 5 stars What Moral Compass?
The only moral compass I've seen yet is whether or not they can get away with justifying their acts with regard to clients. Much of that depends upon the nature of their confidence and where they sit in the "pecking" order of human beings, a.k.a., to whom they were married (denoting family power), where they went to school (usually denoting family power), and what firm they are with (often denoting family power), or who they know (as a result of family power). Therefore, the ethics displayed say a lot more about who's who in family power than about the topic of morality - since it is family power not God who governs the universe. For example, if you come from the right family, you can be a judge, and many have, or even a President, provided you are not a woman. This has been the history for most professions since the nation was founded.

3-0 out of 5 stars More questions than answers
I am afraid that I don't share other reviewers' enthusiasm for this book. Others have noted that it is rather short on solutions to the problems that it outlines. However, it seems to me that this book doesn't know which audience it is aimed at.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Case Against Disgust and Shame As a Basis for Law and Punishment
The thesis presented in this book is relatively simple. Human beings are deeply troubled about being human--being highly intelligent and resourceful, on the one hand, but weak and vulnerable, helpless against death, on the other. We are ashamed of this awkward condition and, in many ways, we try to hide from it. In the process, we develop sentiments such as shame at human frailty and disgust at the signs of our animality and mortality.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is a remarkable book. As a gay man, I found myself saying "thank you" outloud as I finished each chapter. Nussbaum is more than just a wonderful American philosopher, she's a national treasure. If you haven't read her exchange with the, in my opnion, evil philosopher John Finnis, I highly recommend you do. One final point, although I am also a fan of Judith Butler (and I know that Nussbaum and Butler don't always see eye to eye), I see no reason why anyone has to "choose sides." Both of these women are amazing, and both are great to read. The book is very long, which is fine becuase thinkers like Nussbaum have so many interesting ideas and observations on the world we live in. One impression that I got from the book (and this has nothing to do with Nussbaum's own views) is how hard it is trying to come up with a non-theological (that is, non-mystical) argument against homosexuality. Personally, I don't think one can be made -- not a convincing one, at least. Nussbaum co-edited a debate-style book on sexual orientation and American religion, and all the arguments against homosexuality really fell flat and seemed so outdated and almost "hokey." So they really weren't that convincing either. Bottom line is: gays and lesbians have as much right to freedom and the benefits that come with it (marriage, ect.) that straight people do. After all, marriage is all about economic rights and perks whether we want to admit this to ourselves or not. It isn't fair that heterosexuals should have a monopoly on those rights, benefits, perks etc. And besides, who doesn't want gays and lesbians to be in loving, happy, monogamous relationships? And what better incentive is marriage? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Well Told Story About An Intriguing Subject But Analysis Could Be Better
Eat What You Kill:The Fall of a Wall Street Lawyer is the story of John Gellene, the only attorney to ever go to jail for making an incomplete disclosure of "connections" to creditors and parties in a bankruptcy case. While it is clear that Gellene committed an ethical lapse, the fact that he was prosecuted, convicted and served time is truly surprising. Others have failed to disclose much more and have suffered much lighter consequences. As a result, the question of why this particular case resulted in a prison sentence rather than a slap on the wrist is really interesting, particularly to lawyers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding and hugely educational
Hats off to Professor Regan for his prodigious research and painstaking, vivid recreation of the saga of a prominent lawyer's startling rise and fall --an all-the-more remarkable achievement given Gellene's refusal to cooperate in this project. This is an amazing look-behind-the-curtain as to: how large law partnerships reward and penalize their producers and non-producers; how complicated bankruptcy negotiations unfold; how investment bankers and vulture investors exploit weakened corporations; how a brilliant professional succumbed under pressure to career-ending ethical blunders; and much more. An extremely valuable reading experience for practioners and students of law and business that deserves to be a best-seller.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rosenbaum Fails on Several Levels
I must say at the outset that I feel slightly betrayed by the NYT on this one. The comment that this book should be read by every law student in America could not be further from the truth. I have never read a book that has been so well reviewed that has offered so little to the debate.
5-0 out of 5 stars lawyers are humans, too
I have not read this book, but I just finished watching the author give a presentation of it on television. I must disagree with the dissenting review below. The book is about lawyers as human beings who know the difference between morally right and morally wrong but who opt to perform what is ethically allowed by legal parameters. The choice on the part of the persons in charge to pursue the path of least resistance is what is corrupting our justice system. If the lawyer abdicates on his or her moral responsibility towards truth, then in what are we ordinary citizens to believe... upon what are we to depend for the justice we need to struggle? The discomforting question deserves much discussion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Law as therapy? (Yup.) Care to explain yourself? (Nope!)
I am the type of reader who, even if I think i will disagree with an author's stance, like to give the book a fair shake. Who knows? The author might present a case I've not seen and in the end, it may be worth my time and effort. (It has happened before.) Not this time. I came away from these 300+ pages thinking the book a complete and total waste of my time. Read more
