1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time/money - get a lawyer
I purchased this book to help file forms on a stepparent adoption.I submitted the form that was included on the CD "Petition to Terminate Parental Rights of the Alleged Father".To my dismay, they told me that I was using an "outdated" template, as the Civil Code 7409(a) that was referenced was repealed 10 years ago.I sought help from an attorney who told me that this is now under Family Code Section 7611.I do not trust the forms now, as I fear there may be other mistakes that I do not know of, as I am not an attorney.
5-0 out of 5 stars An easy and at times fun way to save thousands on adopting
This book is wonderful for anyone who wants to adopt their spouse's child and has the consent of the other bio-parent (or other stipulation such as the death of the bio-parent, etc.). It not only provides needed forms, butalso has word-by-word examples of the documents you will need to typeyourself (for me, that was actually fun!) Additionally, if you live in LosAngeles as I did during the process, it gives you special instructions forfiling in L.A. county - very helpful! I had to pay only a $700 assessmentfee and 2 or 3 small filing fees and the whole process, from filing theinitial petition to the final hearing (which is especially enjoyable) wascompleted in under 4 months! And the experience brought me even closer toour 5 year old little girl as well as my wife! A lawyer quoted me legalfees of "$2,500 to $3,000, not including filing and assessmentfees" before I found this book. You will not only save money, but comeaway with an amazing sense of accomplishment and a renewed appreciation foryour family. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mother's best interest or childs?
I have news for Deedra, it is just as humiliating, infuriating, and degrading for a father as it is for a mother. If women spent more time meeting the short and long term needs of their children they wouldn't be so wounded. Mother's start out on top with the legal system and usually end up on top. Deedra and the other women are heard by the legal system even when they whisper. It doesn't need to be a fight if everyone is concentrating on our children. Children need a mother and a father even if those people live in different homes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Most Inspirational Book for Women!
This is the most inspirational child custody book I have seen. The 8 pages of Index allow women to find thir way through the legal and emotional battle. Personally, I think that custody is more of a parent's issue than a men against women issue. Although this book does not deal with unsual situations, it is worth the $10.00 price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage, best prep for CJPEE
This text clearly and concisely covers the most critical and challenging aspects of California mental health law. No legalese or unusual jargon, just common sense answers to your most frequently asked questions. I used this text to prepare for the CJPEE and I could not recommend it more highly. It's an interesting read and very helpful to the practicing therapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Leading Judge's Insights into California Divorce
As presiding judge of Silicon Valley's Santa Clara County Family Court, Judge Stewart has made decisions regarding the dissolution of literally thousands of California marriages. He knows what he is talking about, and in this fascinating account he provides the strategies to enable people to come though the process with as little damage to themselves, their children, their spouses, and their finances as possible.Anyone facing divorce in California, or elsewhere, for that matter, should buy this book and study it carefully.5-0 out of 5 stars Divorce Handbook for California: How to dissolve your marrig
I found Judge Stewart's Divorce Handbook for California to be not only incredibly thorough, but also quite easy to understand and free of condescending "legalese". In fact, there is an extensive glossary of terms that I could quickly refer to if I was at all unsure of a legal concept. This book is superior to the "do it yourself" variety, because it illustrates a variety of legal options for the reader, including how to hire a competent attorney and yet protect yourself financially. Because divorce is such a complicated and emotional process, it is reassuring to have a clear and comprehensive resource to turn to for info on a variety of legal issues, such as spousal support, division of property, custody, attorneys etc. I enthusiastically recommend this extremely useful book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive & vital foundation
Adam Pertman, CEO of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, gives readers a comprehensive view of how far we have come in adoption reform. Understanding from where we have come is the vital foundation for motivating us to persevere in the areas of adoption in which we all work and strive. Thank you, Adam, for providing the foundation and the impetus to move forward. You have encouraged me in my sphere of influence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly inspirational
Those of you who enjoyed ADOPTION NATION might like to know that public television wants to produce a documentary special inspired by this book.Like Adam's book, "Adoption: An American Revolution" will show the ways in which adoption today is increasingly inclusive, expansive, and affirming; the project will also include Web resources and outreach campaigns to schools and communities. Please visit www.adoptionfilm.org to find out how you can help: we must complete our funding by the end of 2005 or risk losing the project entirely! And keep watching the site - we expect to post new interview materials with Adam Pertman soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars all families are different
"All families are different," goes the wisdom being taught our children in progressive schools, and Adam Pertman's _Adoption Nation_ explores and celebrates this difference in the particular context of adoptive families in the United States today. His is the most comprehensive general account I have seen of the contemporary redefinition of American family life being effected by adoption (among other forces). Pertman, himself an adoptive parent, opens the way to a brave new world in which affiliation is as valid a means of family formation as filiation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A close-up look into just how medical examiners work
Postmortem: How Medical Examiners Explain Suspicious Deaths offers what few competitors can: a close-up look into just how medical examiners work. The author spent three years shadowing examiners to understand how they probe questionable deaths, and Postmortem covers not just the physical but the legal, social and moral issues faced by the industry. From issues of objectivity in the face of subjective evidence to influences in headline cases, Postmortem is a title not just for the general public, but especially for the college- level medical collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars every therapist needs this book
The primary author is well known as an instructor of "Family Law" for graduate students of psychology, social work, marriage & family therapy, etc. at several north Texas universities. His courses arealways well-received.A previous reviewer commented that a mental healthprofessional would have been helpful.I doubt that would make a differencesince so many professionals from various clinical disciplines use theseauthors as resources. This book is a great adjunct to remind yourself whatyou need to do as a professional to protect yourself & your clients. While you do not offer legal advice if you are not an attorney, being awareof these issues makes a counselor more likely to recommend that a clientsee an attorney for advice. Also, re-reading this book on a regular basisreminds us of what we need to continue to do to protect our professionallicenses.Often when we are in private practice, just as in other areas oflife, we sometimes get lax or forget to attend to all the details necessaryto protect us as professionals & our clients. This book is a must foryour professional library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Going into practice? Here's what you must know first.
I stumbled across this book while preparing a project as part of my undergrad Psychology studies at the University of Utah. What a lucky find this is! *** Many statements exist in the world of mental health practice regarding what standards of professionalism, ethicality, conduct, andconfidentiality a psychologist should adhere to. Many of them, I'vediscovered so far, are abstract: they state the standard but give little,if any, illustration on how a practicing therapist applies all that tohis/her job and life. This book is the first I've uncovered that gives theclear and understandable picture that I need as an aspiring psychologist.*** I think I understand well enough the general principle that motivatedthe authors to write this book: all too often, each of us has gotten burnedin the past because of some rule, some technicality, some law that wouldhave worked in our favor had we acted with a knowledge of it. For example,I know someone who wouldn't have paid a single cent of his medical billscaused by an on-the-job accident had he simply reported his injury within48 hours instead of waiting a week. Things like that. I'm always makingsure I do things like keep receipts, review credit card statements, andwatch what creeps into my college transcripts, because it's the littlethings that can screw our lives up so badly. All the more so fortherapists, the authors believe, because of their heavy responsibility tosafeguard their clients' welfare, and because unfortunately their trainingdoesn't seem to prepare them for some types of potential legal trouble. ***As part of that approach, this book takes an interesting departure fromother literature on mental health ethics. Despite what the title says, thecontents seem to focus not so much on protecting the client--although thatprinciple is by no means diminished--as it does on protecting thetherapist. That may seem selfish, but hey, you've got to learn this stuffsomehow! *** The authors do an excellent job of explaining a diversity ofissues in understandable ways. They use well-constructed scenarios thatmake you ask yourself, "what would I do if faced with thisdilemma?" Then they systematically explain what the options are, andwhat to avoid along the way. They show you several sample documents alongthe way that demonstrate how to remove any legal doubts from your practice. The objective is to prevent things from going wrong, but they also discusswhen things get ugly, such as a client who commits suicide and therelatives sue you, the therapist, for malpractice. Or when to breachconfidentiality and activate your "duty to warn" if a clientthreatens violence against someone else--or yourself. *** I noted that theauthors were both lawyers, and that only one was licensed as a mastersocial worker. I wish, despite their impressive knowledge and experience, that a psychologist might have collaborated with them on this work. Iwonder what sort of change in perspective it would have brought to havesomeone involved in this writing who was solely a practioner of mentalhealth, and not of law. *** Nevertheless, if you have a vested interest inpsychology, I think this is essential reading. If you are a practicingpsychologist, and you do not completely know these practical issues, youmay be an unwitting candidate for some serious trouble. If you are, likeme, someone who hopes one day to become a psychologist, this is anexcellent way to introduce and orient yourself to some very pertinentinformation--and get a firm and realistic picture of what it's really goingto be like for you. Best you pay attention. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best resource on divorce in the market!
This book is arguably the most respectable and comprehensive guidebook on Divorce out there in the market place. The book draws on literally thousands of important and current research studies and synthesizes the information in a balanced way, pointing out inconsistencies in the research and highlighting clear trends in the data. It addresses all major questions anyone might have about divorce, its causes, the process, and its consequences. As a legal professional I find it answers many of the questions that I am often faced with and have never found a clear answer to. Elsewhere one finds loads of unqualified opinions, but solid research based information is hard to come by. I don't have the time to review thousands of studies and to compare their results. So having this book is in incredible help. The authors have done a great job toning down professional research jargon. The book features case studies that highlight certain points and give the book some flesh and blood among the wealth of facts and statistics. I have a library of divorce books but none of those other books covered divorce from start to finish as well as this one did while supporting all points with up to date research.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST OVERALL REVIEW FOR NAPLEX. 5 STARS UP!!!!!
In my opinion, this is the best overall review for the Naplex and the MPJE. You can never go wrong???? With 250 cases and more than 2000 questions and answers including newer medications that have just been approved. If you are in Pharmacy school, this book alone with your notes will give you a perfect score. If you are a foreign graduate without a Pharm D, you also need a comprehensive review book like APHA'S review of Pharmacy. good luck.
