The Transgender Movement as social movement
This volume of essays conceives transgender as a global social movement for rights, including discussions of law, politics and economics.It is academic in tone, but much of it is accessible to a lay audience.While its essays are wide-ranging, covering such diverse topics as multiculturalism, disability laws and Argentinian concepts of citizenship, there is, to my mind, a theme to these essays: the social contradictions that arise from the attempts of supposedly liberal Western societies to assimilate transgender identity.The title of Jan Morris's gender transition autobiography, "Conundrum," comes to mind.Paisley Currah's discussion of the transgender movement refers to it as one "that seeks the dissolution of the very category under which it is organized." Judith Butler's article about the psychiatric diagnosis of "gender identity disorder" notes that "the price of using the diagnosis to get what one wants is that one cannot use language to say what one really thinks is true." Dean Spade's critique of political economy and thegender compliance it demands discusses how the movement for gender identity non-discrimination constitutes a strategy of normalization that opposes, rather than furthers, the right of gender self-determination central to liberation.

Iron determination
Like some other reviewers I came across this book after seeing the movie North Country.The movie though is just good entertainment pulling at the heartstrings and very loosely based on the legal problems of single mother Lois Jenson.
A must read
A story of great courage and resolve, of working conditions beyond the pale, and the vicissitudes of the courts. Well written, in journalistic style, this is a page-turner, as well as being thoroughly researched, and factually accurate.

Class Action
This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. This is something our school kids should be required to read as well. The 2 ladies who wrote this book did an excellent job of telling Lois Jenson's real story. Her story, while tragic, needs to be told. The movie doesn't do this book justice. ... Read more

A must for new lawyers!
This book is, in my mind, a must for new lawyers.It is very helpful in showing first hand accounts of what is awaiting female attorneys, and can be an education for male attorneys as well.Every law firm in the countryshould make this required reading for hiring partners who might notunderstand the issues women in law are dealing with.If you know a womangraduating from law school, you should get her this book!

Just a superficial summary
This book would have been more worthwhile if the authors had truly analyzed the responsesin order to evaluate potential trends across the profession. Instead, those responses were simply reported, so that one hasto slog through the reportage on all the firms to discern trends.

Excellent source of information for women and men
Although I am a man, I found this book extremely useful as I was considering offers from several large NYC law firms.For one thing, I was eager for any source of information, and the authors' surveyhelps giveone a sense of the distinctive culture of each firm.I also was notinterested in becoming part of a firm that discriminates against women (andsome of the behaviour described was frankly disturbing).Balancing workand family are not solely women's issues, although women have led the wayin demanding a healthier balance.As firms (as they surely must, even ifit comes slowly) become more accommodating to women, men will benefit aswell. ... Informative, yet still lacking.
"Rhode breaks little new ground," wrote one critic (Katha Pollitt, for the Atlantic Monthly) about Deborah L. Rhode's 1997 book Speaking of Sex: The Denial of Gender Inequality.While she has admirable intentions, her writing has several shortcomings which destroy the effectiveness of her book, even for some of those who may agree with her.Rhode received her B.A. in 1974 and her J.D. in 1977, both from Yale.She has an extensive list of legal and political honors and positions.Currently, Rhode is on the faculty at Stanford University.Several of her books have met with moderate success.Given Rhode's qualifications, it is disappointing that the thesis of Speaking of Sex is weak, making for a poor read.Throughout the book, Rhode's arguments are riddled with contradiction.Possibly the most prominent weakness of this book is that it fails to call the reader to action.While the book has some merits, such as its basic intents and its informative value, it falls short of making the world a better place for women. Reading this sensible and intelligent book, and remembering how much I enjoyed Rhode's later book on the reform of the legal profession, I wondered why it is that such an eminently reasonable and articulate woman, who has provided such a thorough and well documented defense of feminism, should be so obscure in the world of public intellectuals.Rhode teaches at Stanford Law School, this book is published by Harvard University Press, and she does not write in a the complex academic jargon that all good journalists are trained to hate.Yet she is never called upon when journals like The New Republic or the New York Review of Books thinks it should have a female contributor.Read more

Great book!

Packed With Knowledge!
Susan Antilla presents a powerful and startling indictment of the sexist behavior of stock brokers working for Wall Street and its offshoots, specifically Smith Barney's Shearson/American Express office in Garden City, Long Island. Women struggled to be hired, and then found that the men in charge of their careers practiced all sorts of sexual harassment and intimidation, from jokes to displays of sexual prowess, physical contact and threats of rape. As she describes, the bosses sought to bar women or trap them in low positions. While painting the broader picture, Antilla focuses on whistle blower, Pam Martens, who revealed the situation when she sued for damages. This skillfully written book reads like a fascinating novel, so graphic and dramatic that it is more like a screenplay than a report. We believe it will draw intense interest from everyone affected by this issue: female executives who face glass ceilings and harassment, male executives who must determine their own philosophies toward their female colleagues and human resource professionals who are charged with watching out for them both.

Very accurate
I was a successful broker for many years in one of Smith Barney's largest offices in the nation, and I can personally attest that the events depicted in this book, while shocking, are not exaggerations. A Case with a Twist
I'm a principal at an investment-banking firm although not a stockbroker so reading this book was a good exercise in reviewing the risks at our firm.The coverage in this book is exceptional.As discussed, investment-banking firms are ripe with potential for sexual discrimination.Partly because so many areas work on trading floors which breed a fraternity type atmosphere, partly because stock brokers tend to be fraternity/salesmen type guys, and partly because this environment has assistants, many who are women, working in close contact with these who sometimes consider themselves "masters of the universe."Confidence/cockiness is never in short supply at an investment banking firm's trading floor.Read more
