4-0 out of 5 stars fundamental rights
This is a well-done book, but one that will be a bit hard for those not at least somewhat familiar with constitutional law to follow.Gerstmann argues that marriage is a "fundamental right" under the constitution, and as such it is illegitimate to refuse to extend this right to same-sex couples. In making this argument he draws interesting analogies to the court's free speach jurisprudence. He tries to show how the more common "gender discrimination" argument doesn't work.I think this part is not 100% convincing, but it is a sophisticated approach. His discussion of the various "slippery slope" objections to gay marriage are also quite good.To my mind the biggest draw-back of this book is that it often makes quite teloscopic reference to other books (including Gerstmann's earlier book) in the place of detailed arguments. This book is not very long as it is, and it probably would have been better servered to give these arguments in more detail rather than just refering to other work as often as it does. This is especially the case for readers who do not have at least some constitutional law background.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why same-sex marriage is Constitutional
Want to read a really good book setting out the case for the Constitutionality of same-sex marriage? This is it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A legal book for everyone
This fascinating book is cogent, well argued and a straight-forward read. It is clearly targeted at lawyers, but is very accessible by the lay audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bizarre Story of a Religious Cult
We are used to hearing about religious cults led by one charismatic individual. Our times have no monopoly on such cults, of course; our nation's tradition of freedom of worship encourages them, and we look toward economic or societal means to subdue the most flagrant ones, since the law cannot touch them if they are merely worshipping in some sort of erroneous way._Murdering Holiness: The Trials of Franz Creffield and George Mitchell_ (University of British Columbia Press) by Jim Phillips and Rosemary Gartner resurrects a forgotten case which is part of our nation's history of cults, religious freedom, vigilantism, and the insanity defense.Phillips and Gartner, professors in law and criminology at the University of Toronto, have produced a detailed and closely researched history of the incident, and an entertaining one as well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Candid, accessible, and fascinating
This incisive work illuminates Virginia's colonial history in personal detail: legal procedures, community structures, and economic and political relationships.Researching primary sources, Professor Pagan brings the narrative to life with persuasive insights into decisions and events as the participants must have planned them: their ambitions, fears, successes, and failures.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in social or legal history.

5-0 out of 5 stars History and Passion
Prof. John Ruston Pagan has plucked a young 17th Century woman from deepest obscurity to become the subject of his book: Anne Orthwood's Bastard : Sex and Law in Early Virginia. This is a scholarly effort - it is heavily footnoted and supported by a large bibliography - and a first-rate work of investigation and authorship.Central to Anne Orthwood's detailed history was the availability of original records from the earliest days of English settlement in America. These records are preserved in an old courthouse on Virginia's Eastern Shore.Dating from 1632, they are said to be the oldest English-language court records in America.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great read
This scholarly work of legal history comes in a surprising package -- a gripping tale of early Virginia families and early colonial life and the economy. What a great way to learn about the development of American laws and their foundations!!It is so well written that I didn't want it to end. ... Editorial Review

For most of history, the law permitted men to "chastise" their wives. Common law explicitly recognized a man's right to beat his wife with a stick, as long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb (it is from this tradition that we derive the phrase "rule of thumb"). Men who beat their wives were, and are, infrequently punished, or if at all, only leniently. Women who are battered are often blamed for provoking the attack--even by the most trivial of acts or omissions--or for failing to leave, even though they may fear retribution, or other motivations may make flight less obvious a solution than it seems.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars FGM and American women
Nothing is quite so exciting as objectively watching human cultural prejudice. I believe the cutting of the genitals of both boys and girls is wrong, but look at the double standard women's groups have engendered. In the USA a family can be deported or denied admission if the circumcise a daughter. A medical doctor may be placed in prison if he performs a female circumcision, no matter how minor.5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource
I used Female Genital Mutilation... as a source in the composition of my graduate project.I found it to be a valuable resource in the search for domestic and international female circumcision eradication policy. It provides insight into the approaches being utilized by governments to cease this controversial practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best police book I've read to date
I'm going to be a police recruit in the NYPD in the upcoming months, and wanted to know more about this line of work..Armed & Dangerous would be the book to read. This book is for anyone wanting to be a cop, marrying a cop or the friend of a cop...Gina pulls no punches. She is gritty, raw and honest in her writing, which a lot of other police novels lack.I'm currently reading another police novel now, and its so hard to get into it.Gina raises the bar on all other novels..if you never pick up another true crime novel, read this one!!

5-0 out of 5 stars By Gina Gallo - with no one else.
Riveting, disquieting, amazingly well written. I had to check the cover a couple of times to make sure it wasn't written "with Joe Shcmow." Ms. Gallo names names and leaves out no details about how she managed to function, survive, succeed, and retain personal dignitywithin a most wretched hive of scum and villany.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Disturbing Look at Society
This was an interesting book, however I would have liked to see a little more of the positive side of being a policewoman. There had to be something positive about the job, or she wouldn't have been a policewoman for so many years.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing!
This is a challenging and phenomenal read that was life affirming for me.I'd wholeheartedly recommend this book and any others published by Mr. Huppin et al.The 9th Amendment is too often overlooked in an overzealous pursuit to implant restrictive cultural norms and ethics.Mr. Huppin et al. use a myriad of examples of abuses to make a compelling case for the extension of this amendment to include too-often ignored sexual rights. ...
