5-0 out of 5 stars Information for Victims and the Workplace
This book tells how to confront the harasser. If the harassment continues, the legal steps are covered. For an employer, it provides information on policies, complaint procedures, training sessions and monitoring to prevent harassment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
I found the book to be pretty straightforward and easy to read. It gives all the pertinent information on the subject from the law to how to stop sexual harassment to your legal remedies. One of the best features is that provides an array of case studies that clear up a lot of the gray areas. I used the book to help me develop a training on the subject, I recommend it to anyone who needs more info on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay update, a little more legal now.....
Books for law students get updated at least every five years or so.This book is an update of his first book, this time including "Romer v. Evans" and the St. Patrick's Day cases. When the first edition came out, it was revolutionary. Now, Eskridge, Hunter and many others have published gay legal texts. This new edition still has classic non-legal writings from gay studies. So it's still not just a legal text, but an anthology. It has useful facts in it.Basically, I'm not blown away by this book, but it would be a good thing for gays, both inside and out of the law, to own. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Big sham
It's strange, as I was reading this book, things didn't sit well with me. Too many things didn't jive, there were too many contradictions and it seemed weird that she'd give so many details about her life in Jordan- the type of salon, the neighborhood, the names, etc. because it would give away who she was, the family of the Catholic man that supposedly was dating her Muslim friend. And her family and the other family would be upset with her mom for allowing her to call and warn the boyfriend, etc. Plus, the whole concept of their families being OK with the "unisex" salon, but then being so strict didn't make any sense. She also said all her and her parents had planned for them was marriage, but then that she and her friend purposely tried to get bad grades so they wouldn't have to attend college. Huh?
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunned and Duped
Honor Lost is a well-written and very readable book but it's power lies in the story told.I have often looked at Muslim women and wondered "how can they put up with the way they are treated" and after reading Honor Lost I am realizing that it's a lot like looking at the Jews in the holocaust and wondering the same thing."Why didn't they go down fighting? How could they just take it like that?" There really aren't any easy answers to those kinds of questions, but Norma Khouri does explain how completely dominated these women are and how the men who should love and cherish them treat them like slaves and possessions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting drama about fight for equality in Corporate America
The Bellwomen is a must read for anyone interested in understanding what it was like to be a working woman in the early 1970's. Not a dry history. Ms. Stockford is very skilled in telling this as a compelling, suspenseful story. This book is a fascinating but little known chronicle of the EEOC's suit against AT&T, and Ms. Stockford's comprehensive research is skillfully used to create an exciting drama. She brings to life the characters involved in the legal process. She intersperses sketches of three women who worked for AT&T which only add to this movie-like tale. You won't be able to put this book down.
5-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly good read
This isn't the kind of book I'd normally pick up, but once I started reading I was completely absorbed. The writing is clear and compelling; the characters engaging; and the potentially dry material is presented in a way that makes it fresh and relevant. Ms. Stockford has managed to wrap a complex event into a suspenseful work of non-fiction--quite an accomplishment. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine writing
Bellwomen presents readers with an evenhanded account of the complex legal battle leading up to the landmark AT&T settlement of 1973.Stockford's extraordinary research combines with details she discerns from countless interviews to offer a gripping presentation of the facts in a text reminiscent of A Civil Action. The lucid voice in the writing proves especially effective as the author weaves descriptions of the participants' personalities and private lives between scenes of courtroom contests. The reader comes to appreciate the humanity of the subjects as they reflect on both the mistakes and accomplishments which ultimately leads AT&T and numerous other corporations to recruit and hire women and minorities. ... Editorial Review

Ruthann Robson's canny, well-written essays on lesbian legal theory and pedagogy, rooted in her experience as a lesbian professor at a progressive law school, offer a sparkling application of poststructural analysis, queer theory, and cautious, common-sense feminism to a wide range of legal problems and possibilities. She begins by imagining Sappho as a modern-day law student, with the hope of uncovering Sapphic rather than Socratic methodologies in legal theory: "How could [invoking Sappho] change the ways in which we understand, practice, and apply law? What if we adopted the Sapphic lyric as a mode of communication and understanding rather than Socratic argumentation?"Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A unique look at lesbians in the law
Robson is an openly lesbian, politically progressive law professor.(In later articles, she has come out as a cancer victim as well.)This is a collection of her essays on lesbians, homosexuality and the law. This book has a great introduction.Robson is a complex thinker, so do not assume this book will just say, "Aren't lesbian lawyers cool!?"Robson's analysis of legal issues can be overly pessimistic at times:as if one domestic partner law or pro-gay legal decision can be criticized for not removing all oppressions throughout the world!Still, this was an interesting read.It differs from many gay legal texts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No More Harper Lee
Frankly, I'm flabbergasted by the shallow and inaccurate reviews of this book that have appeared on this site.Dorr does not excuse all black men accused of raping white women.Nor does she commit the "Harper Lee Fallacy."Lee's novel popularized the notion that all black men in the South lived, constantly, under the shadow of lynching. If they even looked at a white woman, they were doomed. While this fear was a cultural truism that held great power in the black community, it simply was not an accurate representation of reality--not every case, every time, (although it did, tragically, occur all too often). But we'veknown that since Ida B. Wells proved that less than 1/3 of lynchings resulted from charges of rape.
2-0 out of 5 stars A traditional text lacking the full story
This all to typical account makes the base argument that every single trial between 1900-and 1960 in which a black man was accused of raping a white women was a sham. Full of clichs such as `white mobs' and `lynchings' which were actually the exception and not the rule this book argues that because white men dared to say they were defending `white womanhood' that therefore they were enacting white patriarchy and suppressing blacks who they felt were `inferior'.This argument goes on to further show that the `white patriarchy' tried to enforce a feeling of conflict between civilization and barbarism thereby enflaming racist passions.Read more
